View Full Version : Don't you *love* it when...

Well I've been meaning to make this thread for a looooong time now, ever since I saw the "Don't you hate it when..." thread existed actually, but never got around to it. So now I'm making it, and I'm taking Badstench's advice and making it totally unique to this new forum.
To start things off..
Don't you *love* it when you're undertaking a challenge at Zumryn's and you decide to skip out on healing next round even though you're near to death and you get a blue healing orb and catch it? I know I sure do.
Don't you love it when you create a character and complete Axepath for the first time and get the Creyn Blade on your first try? Yeahhhh.
Hope this thread sticks, at least somewhat.
Some of it may be overlap with Shameless Bragging, but I still feel that the two threads are unique, at least somewhat.
If not, lemme know and I'll delete it, at least somewhat. But seriously.

When you get the BRK and the portal drops you on level 19 and then a few levels later go through another portal and get dropped on level 24. And survive with the item.

LOVE LOVE LOVE
I reached 33 on Lords of Ogredom, which was my previous record. Killed the guy only by virtue of both my quickstones *and* wand. Still had a little NV left, though, so I healed up and went on to 34 figuring I'd have to flee. But I got a portal to skip levels, instead. AND that portal got me the Blue Flame Wreathed portal and the key.
I ended up at Level 38, which was black for me. At that point I ran away screaming. More or less.

Nice and never thought about it but another use for fortification much like using a BoP when fleeing although you may still take damage using Fortification. For others that may not know you can right click then open in a new window/tab where you can view it easier. Have some rep for pointing out another reason why Fortification's combat use shouldn't be overlooked.

Taleria's post got me thinking about the flee bug in mp's. Can't recall the specifics but if I remember correctly one can flee and take damage over his or her remaining SP and still survive. Also, maybe this only happens when an enemy special kicks in - my memory's a bit fuzzy on this and necrothreading across forums doesn't hold the same seductive sway. :)
Is this correct and does it still exist?
Mattman20

When you are "forced to retreat" you can take dmg that would normally kill you and still make it out alive. But if you go to flee manually you can still be killed. And yes it still exists.

Well I could lie and save face but apologies and have a conciliatory rep Thingirl.
Actually I read all the posts it just seems that some of my "mispent youth" may be catching up with me. That and a little reaping what I sowed since when I was younger I often poked fun at my older co-workers memory issues. Don't feel too bad as this is at least the second time that Mattman has had to whack my memory awake on this issue.
EDIT:
Seems like that "mispent youth" may have affected more than my memory....

Probably when you spin the wheel (of fortune sorry, couldn't resist) This would be a good thing for the Tarn thread.
Joddelle
07-19-2009, 04:20 PM
I'm pretty sure it's not when you spin the wheel. At least not normally. I've never got a different XP result on a restart of Tarn, even the one time I got a 256xp AS&P award, it kept coming up 256 over and over while I tried for the Blue Stone Orb.
If it were normally determined at that point, the reward would vary quite a lot on retrys.
thingirl

Suggustions: When you...
Kill the spider
Clear the last building (not likely)
Spin the wheel (also not likely)
Some time in lower Tarn (not at the beginning, could have changed).
Joddelle
07-19-2009, 04:44 PM
I know it's not conisistently any of those. I've tested them all, and like I said, never had the XP award vary.
The lower Tarn thing is simply impossible, since you can get the award without going there.
I've done ONE building, retreated to Trithik, and come back to finish Tarn, and quit without saving when I got the XP. For me - this always give me the same award until I click on through the XP and do the city fresh three hours later.
Anyway, this isn't the thread for this discussion.

I concur. Although, couldn't the GM code the MP and BSA against that?
Good point. True, it likely wouldn't be too hard to prevent that from happening in an MP. Probably the simplest solution would be to put a cap on the max damage the black steel axe can do in its "instakill" mode. We just saw a case where it did over 1100 damage to something, so we'd probably want to cap it at, say, 1500 or 2000 to make sure it can still take out any non-MP opponent.
Although that would still be a lot more damage than anyone can normally do, so you might get everybody using their BSAs in a fight against an undead MP opponent. If enough people managed to zap it, the battle could be shortened significantly. So it might be preferable (though perhaps a little more complicated) to ensure that the BSA can't do an instakill at all when used in an MP.
Given the amount of time it takes the GM to code new content, though, he probably doesn't want to revisit old code like the BSA if he can avoid it, especially since any change to working code can inadvertently change it into non-working code, which then needs to be debugged, fixed, and retested... possibly more than once, if the first fix doesn't quite work. So my guess would be that he's simply avoiding the problem by not creating an undead MP opponent.

Which makes seance. It's probably a dumb idea, especially because Stinky rejected it, but a nice MP would be Skargok or whatever his name is. His statue, animated thought it can be, is just a statue. The real thing would be nice.

09-21-2009, 02:32 PM
So, let's just say that you decide that you want to try and best your top score in BHC, and, with that in mind, you wait until you get a green mushroom from Fogbough and you buy a Luriador stone. You wait until there is a fierce, ravaging wind and you start out at the highest level possible, say, level 35. You're tooling merrily along, getting lots of orbs and a good number of shortcut portals and lo and behold, the ghost lady appears...and, of course, you take her hand and, of course you get 512/2048 and smile and decide whether or not to bail at level 120 or so. Sticking with it, you progress a little further and she appears again for 256/1024 and you really want to leave but you do have that Luriador stone and all and say what they hey and keep going. You get to six levels from your highest level, say 170 and get a black orb to go on to 177, which is your record and have the luxury of using the stone 10 times to clear the last three levels to get to 180..and you finally leave, having beat your record by 5 levels and getting 768 to all S and P and about 4800 general xp. I LOVE it when the planets line up for you like that :)
As an aside, it was a gentle breeze when I left, so I imagine it switched over some time before I found the ghost lady the first time, but I don't know for sure.

The most interesting pre-gen character I've seen so far is Spellhurler, who starts out with nine powers: everything but Necromancy and Shadow Magic. He has a really hard time with the startup scenario that gives you Necro for free, though, because none of his 9 powers are very high, he has relatively little NR to start with, his stats (like all the pre-gen characters) are pretty random, and his melee skills are pretty much nonexistent.
Fortunately, you can complete it successfully even if you flee most of the battles, which is what I ended up having to do to get him through it.

Is that good or bad? Been a long time since I started a new character. Been a long time since I played around with Spellhurler, too, so I may have misremembered his NR being low.
His MR and SP are both quite low, though, which doesn't help either.

Ah, that makes sense. I was just playing around with Spellhurler a bit; never even considered taking him as far as the Murk. If I really wanted to play him, then yes, it would be more reasonable to take some other startup scenario and get Necro from Ethulle.
What about Daggerspire? If you already have Elementalism, does it just increase your level a bit, or do you get nothing?

You enter the BHC while a gentle breeze is blowing and you find the ghost lady at level 18 for 256, then you find her again at level 73 for 256, then you find her again at level 114 for 256, then you find her again at level 137 for 256 and then you find her yet again at level 139 for 256. 5 encounters in one run all for 256. Gotta love it!

The Bone Horde Challenge - Level 1
The low, pulsing hum of the portal before you is suddenly replaced by an eerie silence. You watch in fascination as the ghostly, glowing figure of a young woman, clad in flowing robes, slowly emerges from the vortex.
The glowing spirit turns her youthful face toward you and you are quick to note the deep sadness her expression readily betrays.
"Take my hand," she says, in a voice as soft as a gentle breeze. "You give us hope against this horde. I will do what I can to help you..."
The ghost of the young woman stretches out her hand toward you...
Take her hand...
Refuse to take it...
Don't you hate it when you then go 218 more combat encounters and you don't see her again.
I haven't seen the ghost for a while.
