He ran like he never had before, with the case stuck in his belt. The ground was flat now, and he was able to turn around and size up his pursuers without slowing down. There were four of them, all bearing drawn swords.
He turned around to look forward again and saw that two others had appeared in front of him. They must have climbed up the side. Which left only one part unobstructed...
He soon found why it was unobstructed, because there were no gargoyles or apparent openings on this side, which made climbing much more difficult. Consequently, the lack of obstacles made the 80 foot drop look much more dangerous, especially considering how the water at the bottom was unlikely to be forgiving.
He knew he could not tell if the water was shallow or deep, or if he would break every bone in his body with a jump or perhaps land safely somehow, but he could hear the clatter of footsteps behind him...
The apparent leader of the six stepped forward and stabbed a longsword...
Into empty space, as Zmflavius stepped away and fell backwards toward the empty air below...
