A new MP scenario that is not yet available. But the text makes it clear that it will be a multiplayer one. So far no further information is available.

Ulgror has an interesting entry in the Sryth Encyclopedia here (http://www.sryth.com/ci.php?f_c=showinfo.inc&f_infoid=ulgror).
Can't wait.

From the latest updates:
Ulgror is Coming...
An all-new challenging and rewarding multiplayer combat scenario is on its way. The battle against Ulgror is set to begin in 3 days (6/15).
The mighty, immortal guardian spirit of Tar Lake doesn't take kindly to adventurers poking around its ancient abode...and the fearsome tar beast is about to make that point abundantly clear.
It should be noted that adventurers in possession of Varkyn's Ring of Motley Wonder will begin to discover that the events and places in and around Tar Lake are, in many ways, connected to the great 'Trickster' Mage.

I wonder what weapons would be most effective against Ulgror. Would Ulgror be considered an elemental. Despite possibly being an embodiment of the spirits of Tar Lake's victims, I don't really expect that Ulgror is one of the undead.
Since the raffle for Goraphtor's Savage Weapons (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Battle_Marker_Raffles/Gorapthor%27s_Savage_Weapons), I've wondered how useful a weapon with a rare bonus against elementals (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Category:Weapons_vs_Elementals) (like Gorapthor's Fearstaff) would be. In contrast, several other Gorapthor's weapons help in the other MPs -- the anti-dragon and anti-demon ones.

Hmm, hadn't considered that he might be an elemental. Storel has the Enchanter's Dagger, so I'll have him try it out against Ulgror once he debuts. I'm thinking tar probably isn't considered an element, but it's worth a try.

I'm thinking that he is a shadow type because "I am what was". A shadow is something that was there before you died. This is my guess there because are no spirit type creatures in the game. Although the GM might create one. Still lets keep wondering.
Oldschool

Could be as we don't have any known shadow types for Trielra's Staff.
But I seem to recall mention that some first run creatures might be shadow types but to my knowledge no one's tested that theory.

I don't know how the "Boss" will be affected, but I tried different powers on the Tar Men and both Elementalism (81) and Necro (82) did quite well, better than Gating (85), (Scout's power choice).
It could have been lucky shots with them and unlucky ones with the other powers, could be that the same thing won't work on the boss.

thus far it is not listed as AG....but might be when put in.
But like the Battle Markers....even if non-AGrs are able to participate....they would not be able to collect the rewards behind those doors.
Just wondering what tomorrow will bring...

Well since we don't have the usual screens at Tar Lake yet who besides moi is waiting (and hoping) for the stroke of midnight.
Also I just had a thought as I just cleared out the lower level of Sword Island. What if that level is like our basement and we have to clear it out x number of times?

Get ready.....
Several dozen yards from shore, the thick, roiling surface of the bog writhes and ripples continually... Edit: If there's any changes in the text I'll edit them in for reference just in case it's similar to Tarramyre. First text noticed at appx. 12:07
Edit2: May be because it's the inaugural run but interesting to note the other typical screens are absent as well as the timer.
Edit3: Looks like the other screens may be coming online. I doubt the few amount of adventurers are accurate considering who's active in game and viewing this thread. Maybe they/you won't show until you leave and come back to the screen since the adventurers screen came online.
Edit: Several dozen yards from shore, the thick, roiling surface of the bog writhes violently, spewing columns of molten tar many feet into the air... Text change at 12:30 I'll try to update with times and note the battle time for reference purposes just in case.

Please Note: Experience awards for this battle have been recorded for each participant and will be available at the "windowless building with the blue door" in Hawklor, Trithik, or Talinus. There is a delay between the end of a battle and the availability of the Experience awards.
Ulgror is no more. The fearsome tar beast was valiantly engaged by a brave band of Sryth's most illustrious heroes in a brutal battle that lasted 0 hour(s) and 10 minute(s).
It was ultimately the illustrious adventurer, Lancelot (texlaw1992), who brought down The towering tar beast.
Wielding his trusted weapon (Shadowfire Sword), the valiant Lancelot ended the menace of The towering tar beast by dealing out a total of 583 point(s) of damage in his final engagement with the fearsome tar beast.
Here are the names of some of the bravest adventurers who stood against The towering tar beast, and the damage they scored against the fearsome tar beast...

Scout died 4 times during the battle, including the first round.
Every time Scout would flee, he took major damage as well. I don't think there was one time that he didn't take a hit on the run.
I missed the final round while saving. Scout got a blob in his last round and didn't want to take the chance of loosing it.

First congrats Dariel and Texlaw.
Two drops will add descriptions item numbers later.
I also got transported to Ildraria's lair on the first exit screen actually where you are fighting the trolls leaving her lair. In gamed the GM from that screen as well as from Talinus advising him I got out.
I also noticed the battle results were completely different before I was transported to Ildraria's lair - probably her last mp results.
Also did anyone else's repeatable clicking on restoro option disappear partway through. And it's probably related to it being the first run but I wasn't getting the typical 3 adventurers round by round breakdown.

You're standing directly before the black stone altar. The top of the altar has been carved to resemble the massive head and gaping maw of some hideous beast.
The 'mouth' of the altar currently contains 1 blob of tar.
Since discovering the altar, you've placed 1 blob of tar in its maw.

Re: the bug.
Hi, thanks for the report! There was an incorrect setting that caused the
glitch. It's now corrected, and the ending of the battle will present itself
correctly next time. The Experience rewards for the battle will be accurate,
and if you visit Tar Lake, you can view the results of the battle with Ulgror.
Thanks again for the report. It's much appreciated!
As always, all the best,

OK now that I'm done atm with the Sword Island thread some observations re: the mp.
Any help/corroboration would be appreciated just use spoilers please.
On the initial foray I encountered several tar men similar to the wolfkin and armoured trolls. However I got slain and had to come back a handful of times in the first handful of rounds and never fought them again. Never saved until later when I got a drop btw.
I did encounter them again later so I'm thinking they are random on APPROACH.
Also again on approach (at least four different times) I had a check to avoid a tar fountain (paraphrasing btw). Could use Ele or Fort at the same level - 60 I think or SM at 70. Sure of the xp awards though - 16xp for Ele and 24 xp for SM. Also could do a stat check (can't recall specifics).
And those Tar Fist specials are NASTY.

Scout encountered the Tar Men on approach as well, both in groups and single combat.
He only used Ele (16xp) on the tar fountain all successful. Seeing the XP reward for Shadow Magic, I think next time Scout will be using that.....
I wonder, you said that you only got one drop, but did it say tar blob X 2 maybe? Just a thought that the quantity may be random.....

Three times I was hit with random attacks before going into the fray. You have the option to use Fortification (60+), Elementalism (60+) or Shadow Magic (70+). If successful you get 16 to either Fortification or Elementalism and 24 to Shadow Magic. You can also dodge (my bonuses were 40, needed 75) but you get no xp. I passed every time, so I don't know what happens if you fail.

@ Scout. Shoulda worded that better. Actually I got two separate drops - I just didn't save till I got the first and then the second.
And I'm guessing you're right in that you need to save after you use your drops as well as getting them. Similar to KB rewards and Battle Markers in that if you don't you lose 'em or in that case credit for 'em as they still stay in the pot so to speak.
Guess I'm the not so anonymous absent minded benefactor.

Was thinking the same thing. But the time may have affected it and no timer as there were several "active adventurers" I was expecting to see. But I don't know the exact mechanics of that list so they may have been logged off as well.
Also anyone else wondering why there isn't a timer on the adventurer finder or a countdown when you go to Tar Lake? I'm guessing the GM's still working on it?
And Scout it seems as if it is on a 30 minute timer once the "tar starts boiling" as you predicted.
EDIT: And I noticed the lack of a three adventurer battle result screen as well. But considering the number of times I got Hawk slain I'm not complaining. Plus it's probably coming.

Nothing showing for me either and I fought in the first battle.

Ulgror stretches wide his dripping, cavernous mouth and unleashes a long, mournful bellow as his tremendous, flowing bulk begins to sink slowly into the bubbling tar bog.
The brave adventurers closest to edge of treacherous mire swiftly fall back to firmer, higher ground as the mighty spirit of the bog guardian swiftly disappears into the roiling, black depths of Tar Lake.
In a matter of moments, all that remains to mark the spot where Ulgror fell is a broad ring of churning tar two dozen yards from the stony shore.

I presume the rest of the 113 blobs are those that were placed by all the other players who've gotten blobs?

On my way to the first round against Ulgror, in the last battle, Scout had to fight 7 tar men.
About 3/4 of the way through he then faced 9 tar men before fighting Ulgror.
At first I thought I was stuck in a loop and thought I wouldn't get to the battle. Glad I was wrong and I think 7 or 9 tar men during the battle is a bit extreme.....

No drops for me in the last fight. Every combat was less than 30 rounds and also less than 1000 damage. I wonder if the number of rounds impacts your chancd to get a drop?

No drops for me either, but with 4 out of 6 KBs today I'm not complaining! :)
Congrats on top damage, TG - very impressive going.
Re when the drops happen: I'm going with my usual theory of 'it's just random'. It always seems unlikely that the GM would bother to hook it up to anything like round length or damage when it would be so much more straightforward just to make it a percentage chance when you leave the fight. Also, if it were linked to how much damage you do it would be unfair to lower-level players.
(Also, come to think of it, I had a number of 30+ rounds and got over 1000 twice, and still no blobs...)

Question that I've failed to test. And pardon me if this is specifically answered as I don't recall the specifics.
It's been established that using powers during an mp will nerf your subsequent melee attacks for awhile. I can't recall if the power use was specifically on the combat screen or if it was even "broke down" that specific.
Just wondering if anyone that has used a power to avoid that has noticed the lower melee damage?
I've been dodging lately just because I'm not sure if it affects the melee damage or not.

Any power that you use during a combat round (i.e. while you are fighting) will nerf your melee damage for 70 rounds.

Yeah sorta reverse of my experience. Considering Spencer's post in the "general" mp thread it seems the GM's doing some "serious tweakage" to the mps along with the BOG.
Maybe it was a glitch associated with that and a one time thing.

Just thought I'd mention this because it's "got" me a couple times as I'm not used to it.
If you choose to rest during the mp you get some text and a continue screen. If you do not hit the continue screen and actually get to the rest screen you won't actually rest.
And if like most folks you also use restoro while resting you go back to the continue screen. It seems (pretty sure although very limited testing) you do continue resting but it also seems (less sure) it throws your timing off in relation to your uses of restoro unless you go back to the actual rest screen. And it goes to the continue screen every time you use restoration.
Just thought I'd pass that along.

I don't care for the "continue" screen. I keep missing the continue and start using the restro then my NVR isn't built back up unless I want to wait for it....

I was messing around this morning and stored enough blobs there (3 MP's worth) to reopen the portal now however after I stored them I went back in to pick them up and as I picked them up the right hand side text that indicated that I picked an item up showed up each time I clicked on a blob but the blobs never showed in my inventory. Hello out there in Forum Land:
I have a quick question. It doesn't exactly deal with the Tar Beast, but it does deal with multi-player battles in general.
While I know that I'm far from the top ranks, at last peak, I breached the 141st mark, I just can't believe how some of you can manage to dish out so much damage in a fight. Now that I have the 3 black octagon gems, I can usually average between 5,000 and 10,000 points by the end of the fight, but I routinely see someone who has dished out 30,000 and more points. How do you do it? Is there some trick to it or is it processor speed or what?
Before the gems, I would be lucky to hit the 4,000 mark if I was in from the first swing, and I would just love some pointers on how to improve my performance, and damage. I do know that a number of you have raffle weapons, but they don't appear to make that much difference in these totals, the weapon is as often as not my own Shimmering Silver weapon.
So, any hints? Any sage advice from the old timers? Any suggestions from the road wise?
Thanks,
Harry (ryan McBride

Processor or connection speed is a big chunk of it...the less total time you spend clicking the more rounds you're going to get in. And some people are very anal about not wasting any time between rounds...go heal and wait until you can run back in...refresh yourself instead of waiting for the screen to refresh...lastly, sometimes the big totals will be from people who fight a lot of the fight alone...they are the only one there...when others start to join they have accumulated a lot of damage already.

Sometimes an MP starts with only one or two people hacking away for a while, with others joining closer to the end. That's often the case when you see two or three people with very high damage scores and the rest with significantly lower scores.

Click fast. And have a fast conection. And be very anal about getting back on time. (I almost always go back while I have to wat 3-5 seconds or more. :))
And the BOGs really help too.
shadowblack
08-09-2010, 08:01 PM
And above all - RANDOM LUCK! Randomness affects things more than anything else:
- if you keep getting killed by enemy specials you do no damage, and the damage each special does is random
- the damage of the BOGs: doing 6000 or more damage is one thing, doing 2000 or less is another
-- there's also the little detail that you do no damage when you get stunned by enemy special, even if you take no damage (I'm looking at you, Talderus!)
- Battle Rage, especially if it activates for 10+ rounds
- getting extra damage from your weapon's special
- the duration of the engagement - 25 rounds is one thing, 37 rounds is another
- crappy rolls - if you keep rolling 5 or less you will do hardly any damage; if you keep rolling 18, 19 and 20 you will do some serious damage

Although what's mentioned makes a little difference, don't forget to never use a power in an MP battle! If you do it stops you getting the high damage attacks.
I was trying all different techniques until I found out about not using powers and it was only really this that made a real difference!

Thanks for the advice everyone. Although some things still escape me.
I have been on hand when the first blow is thrown, but the massive point differences even between first and second can be significant. I can understand how processor and connection can make a difference, and of course, if the character is stunned, he's not going to do damage. (I try hard to leave Red Thorn alone as he can knock me from 195 to 0 in about 5 rounds if I'm really unlucky). I can usually jump from combat and back in within a few seconds, and I've gotten a cycle down to about 15 to 20 seconds. I seem to average 600-900 with a cycle, as much as 6,000 with a lucky black octagonal gem(x3). I'm just blown away that I'm still managing at best a third of that high schore on a goo day. My calculations of what damage I've done and the final totals don't always line up, but that may just be my math skills.
I'm not sure that I understand the comment about magic. Do you mean only during the actual combat, or while you're waiting to return as well? Is it better to "Rest here" than to use Restoration and reenter the battle?
Speaking of the Black Oct's, what happens if I have 3 of them, and try to reenter the portal again? Anything useful? I have over 10 of the blobs that I don't really know if I should dump them in the idol or not.
Thanks for the help! I appreciate it.

When you are in combat, do not use powers. One of my favorite tricks is to "Rest here" and use Restoration while resting. Speeds it up a little.

Once you have 3 BOGs, you can go back through for combat XP. I would put the blobs in if only to get the general XP. Also, once you deposit 8, you don't need more to enter.

First since I think I missed it on your first post, so....
Welcome to the forum hgphibbs.
While this is mentioned in game it's easy to overlook - if you flee before 20 rounds any damage you've inflicted won't count. And a couple other things.
Whatever damage you inflict on the killing blow round only counts if you actually score the killing blow. And if you do score a killing blow make sure to save asap. While damage xp won't be lost if your character is slain or you reload the AS&P award for the KB will be.

Sorry to all those who were working hard on Ulgror, and I got the KB with only fighting one round; when I went in he still had 10% health left, so I didn't think I could do enough damage with one BOG to finish him off . . . Didn't realize there were so many people working on him.

Hi all, back for a little while before hopefully being back for good :-)
Just fought this for the first time and was happy to see that he is an elemental (+10MR with THE MIGHTY SKYRAGE HAMMER), once got five tar men before engaging and second time seven! Is that usual?
Picked up two blobs of tar and put them in the altar but then what?
Cheers for any info and hopefully I will be back on the boards a bit more regularly soon.

Good to see you back Chareos - glad to hear 'bout the impending "for good".
The Tar Blobs are used to get the Black Octagonal Gems. Once you deposit around 8 blobs in the altar you gain entry into the portal. However for the portal to be opened there has to be 200 blobs total (a community effort) deposited. Then the portal stays open for a random? amount of time. Each 200 blobs opens it once which allows you to get a BOG (3 max). But even after you get the max BOGs the portal is a good source of combat xp the same as the lower ruins are a good AS&P mini grind.
Suffice it to say the BOGs are an uber MP weapon and have at least one use in single run content.
Once you get your eight or so blobs deposited you may want to hold any additional ones so that you can take advantage of their numbers towards the 200 since the portal only stays open for a limited time.
Edit: The tar men en route are normal but appear to be random.

Woo Hoo :-)
You managed to deal 1,284 points of damage to Ulgror before you were forced to retreat.
Suddenly...
On the ground nearby you spot a small, quivering mass of black tar. Much to your horror, you note that the blob of tar bears a disturbing resemblance to a horror-stricken human face.
Despite your initial misgivings, you reach down and take possession of the tar blob.
ITEM You've acquired: Quivering Blob of Tar

Yippee Kai Yay Muddyfunster ! Also managed to pick up seven blobs of tar! Thanks very much for the help Oldschool et al. I noticed there's no combat commentary of the last three attacks any more. Is the GM going to fix that?
EDIT: Ty Oldschool guess I'm too slow on the typing too lol

No problem I deleted mine - after all KB and TD gives you first posting rights as far as I'm concerned. ;)
Again - double congrats. Always interesting to see Ulgror's battle results since rounds don't post in game like the others.
EDIT: Re: combat commentary.
Ulgror's mechanics are different than the others and the GM mentioned MP updates fairly recently so that's anyone's guess.

Just a quick one...
I have now added 10 blobs to the pot and it is currently on 154. How do you know when it reaches 200? Do you have to keep going there and checking? I wonder, because if the 'portal' is only open for a short period of time there seems to be a fair chance that one could miss the opportunity????

Unfortunately you're correct. There's no way besides checking. However this may help. If it's close and you post the numbers here or in the Sword Island thread folks that may be holding blobs might dump theirs in.
Good luck. Also don't know if I was clear on my earlier post but the individual entry of eight or so is a one time thing unlike the 200 community pot.

And hang in there as once you've got current on content a 200'ish MR and SP for that matter is pretty viable. And that's without donating or winning any special items.
