Where's that flippin' altar?

Okay, I'm finally getting around to the Tar Lake/Sword Island stuff, and I've successfully rescued the Amulet from the crypt on the island and gotten a few tar blobs. Now, what do I do with them? I've been poring over all the related threads that I can find, and I gather I'm supposed to deposit them at some altar somewhere, and some levers are involved somehow... but where does this happen? I can't find a thread that says where you find the altar, and there's nothing useful about it in the wiki either -- just a mention on the Quivering Blob of Tar page to "Use at a certain altar". Very helpful.

I have found the Painted Peddler at least once, but couldn't afford Varkyn's Motley Ring at the time, so do I need to have that? I went through the whole Painted Peddler thread without seeing anything about an altar, though. What am I missing?

You need Varkyn's Ring, I'm afraid.

If you're wearing Varkyn's Ring you get access to a lower level in the crypt on Sword Island. That's where you find the altar.

Aha. Thanks, Dooli! Good thing I went and got Varkyn's ring while waiting for a reply. Wonder how I missed a mention of that in the threads?

I think things got a bit confusing at one stage because there was more than one relevant thread. Could be why you missed it!
