After a lengthy hiatus (hazard of being character number four I suppose :rolleyes:) Voltan just resumed his quest for the Ice Shield and completed his fifteenth trip.
Unfortunately I was spamming through the key-holders and didn't notice the/a text change but when I went to use the requested circle key I had two of them in my inventory. Also as is sometimes usual after using it Voltan was then asked for the square key. Once I used it as usual all my keys disappeared including the second circular key. Has anyone ran into this before.

Scout has had multiple keys of the same shape several times. Usually I'm spamming as well and don't see how/why he gets it.

It took me FOREVER to get my ice shield. BUT my last battle was on the last day to buy tikkets for Bandryp's loot. So I traded in my Tallys shield on Monday, got my Ice shield on Friday, and bought the Dragongem Helm the following Monday.

It took Ulric months to get his. I play Scout 99% of the time so I would forget to do the run till it was past bed time or time for work. But he finally got it.

Good idea zmflavius, also good to see you got your original handle back.
Also I need to clarify the order of posts as zmflavius's (boy oh boy it's gonna take some getting used to the correct :o use of the possessive form - lol) post was the first/creation of the thread. I moved the top two posts from another thread (it automatically places them in chronological order) as the replayable scenarios sub-board wasn't up then.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to whine about those darn random brigands. Yes, I realize they are Quick Combattable and weak, and that they can give up to ten exp, but they're just really annoying. They used to be less frequent, so it was okay, but sometimes they appear at the most inopportune moments, like when SP is low due to those nasty middle fights that you can't run away from. Phew. I feel better having gotten it out. Thanks for your time.

Hey, look at this: You make a close examination of the door and discover a triangular keyhole set into the centre of the massive slab of ice.
A particular item might be of use here...
It never asks for the triange key. Hey, I'm gonna show off my Ice Shield to that Troll now.

No, you can get all three shapes before you get the ice shield. I'm still trying to get the shield with one of my characters now, and she had the triangle the other day.

Why check the door before getting the keys?
Is/was there a benefit to that, other than forcing use of the square key?
I guess if you don't want the easy XP from all three key-holders, it's a way to skip a couple combats.

And that demonstrates precisely why I run the cave When I'm doing the grinding circuit. You also get around 140 combat XP for the troll and an additional 64 XP on top of that. I don't know why more people don't make the cave a habit for the profitability.

Yeah, but a lot of folks stop visiting it after they get the Ice Shield. Also the power uses give a good amount of xp especially if you're trying to get one of those powers leveled. The gear is usually pretty profitable as well especially for the number of pieces.

And yes, the Glittering Ice Shard from the last Sevenhorn adventure can only be used in a SAFE location.

I repped you because you have been extremely helpful and it would not allow me to do it for an earlier comment until I had repped some others ;) I hope that explains.
As for the Ice Cave well todays run (missed yesterday due to being out and about in the real world):-
The apparition of the shield is so bright that you're forced to avert your eyes. At the edge of your vision, in centre of the strange, hovering image of the shield, is a dark, jagged impression.
You can hear what sounds like a harsh whisper from somewhere nearby.
You attempt to reach out and touch the shield, but your hand passes through the apparition.
Hmmm I have never yet seen the number on the shield to tell me how many visits I have made to the cave :confused: that is mentioned in the Wiki information on the cave.
XP +256 You've been awarded a total of 256 Experience...
256 xp applied to general...
XP +64 You've been awarded 64 Experience...

Oh well the shield is still beyond my grasp :( so I suppose I ahd better return to Westmere and earn soem more XP's then onto Tarn for yet more XP's. I need three more levels in Fortification to reach the magic Level 70 so back to the grind.

I'm debating whether or not to run the ice cave now or wait until Selkit has Archery and the useable powers at seventy. Is it even doable without the skill/powers, given that getting hit by falling ice or the troll's attacks takes so much SP? The problem is that if I wait, it'll take that much longer for Selkit to get the shield, and she could really use it since she didn't take any MR-boosting item from "Haunting." She's only got 127 SP. Somehow I think that's too low, but ATs are currently tied up in the Silver Star Shield, so can't get Dragongem items. Oh, and for reference purposes, powers are all in the fifties and skills are about mid-sixties. Better yet, here's Selkit's profile. (http://www.sryth.com/p/?14cccb4xce1deaf34) Any advice?

Spend your Gen. XP on Archery (It will help you in the tournie, and you might get some ATs) and use the GC to get Elementalism up to 70. And, yes, the longer you wait, the longer it is 'till she gets the shield, but she also gets more XP.

Sorry for that I have corrected (hopefully) that error.
Ahhh it seems that someone was listening as I have just done my daily run of the Ice Cae and the number on the shield is now showing:-
The apparition of the shield is so bright that you're forced to avert your eyes. At the edge of your vision, in centre of the strange, hovering image of the shield, is a dark, jagged impression.
A barely-discernible etching of the number 11 adorns the surface of the shield, just above the jagged mark.
You can hear what sounds like a low, sinister voice from somewhere nearby.
Hmmmm I would have guessed that it's been more than 11 days whilst attempting this. Although I did miss a day or two due to being busy so that perhaps explains it.
Oh well I have a long ways to go yet it seems! Doh!

I've decided to grind powers and skills to at least 70 before attempting the cave. I figure I'll still need them that high for PG V, and anyway, the shield is not usable unless Weaponry is at 80. It's a bit of a pain to do right now because you need to roll over 100 to successfully dodge. Too much margin for failure.
thingirl
08-25-2009, 05:53 PM
OK, get Elementalism to 70 from the GC and get Archery up to 70. You get AS&P XP from the cave, so don't worry about Weaponry right now. Level it up when you fight your 35th victory. After you get Elementalism and Archery up to 70, save up Gen. XP for Weaponry.

Stats

In the cave I tend to use Restoration after the fights with the frozen brigands and use the Quick Combat to resolve the fights. Only sometimes does this require other intervention or the use of powers to resolve the combat. A couple of times I had to retreat to rest when the roll of the numbers went against me and it required a heavy use of restoration to heal. Often Plezier can make it through to the Troll and defeat him without resorting to resting.
Not trying to boast here just inform that even with my poor luck in the game that the Troll and Ice Cave can be done without waiting to achieve level 70. Dodging his attackes is how I managed before although Shadow Magic is useful there and I did have that at level 70 for some time now.

A few Tarn runs especially now I have accessed to first lower level helps as do the BHC and the LoO although things will slow for the next couple of days as time to play will be sparse. It will have to be Telekinesis or Illusion that will brought up to level 70 next. I saw that on the Wiki. None of the other repeatable scenarios seem to require more than 10 runs through. 36 runs, and only once every 24 hours, is just too many for my taste. I'll stick with my shield from Tally's unless the GM lowers the number of runs to 12 or so.

Glittering Ice Shield (frozen) (Use)
* Class: Armour, Shield
* Encumbrance: 15
* Quality: Magical
* Melee Rating: +15
* Stamina Points: +7
* Requires 16 Spirit.
* Requires 16 Body.
* Requires 16 Might.
* Requires 80 Weaponry.
This heavy, glittering shield is crafted out of a solid slab of thick ice. Leather bands attached to the back of the shield provide a surprisingly effective method of wielding the object, though you cannot fathom how they remain affixed to the item's frozen surface.
You obtained this remarkable, enchanted shield after a long series of victories over the ice troll in its remote, frigid lair.
Current Level: 8
Condition: frozen

It may sound like a long time, and too much trouble, but it's really not that bad. I agree with Scout that it IS worth the trouble. Only my main, Altaria, has the ice shield at the moment (I've been really scattered about playing my secondaries), but Tsuki is already on day 26. She should have the Ice Shield in a little over a week if I continue to run her at least once a day.

It's definitely a time consuming affair Texlaw but it is also definitely worth at least reconsidering.
The Ice Shield when fully leveled (MR+15/SP+7) outshines all other shields including those at Tallys except for the Coiled Serpent Shield (MR+17/SP+7/NR+1) which costs a whooping 304 ATs. Plus, the ATs you get refunded if you're sporting a Tallys shield when you finally do get it can be spent for other Tallys gear.
Also the rewards in the Ice Cave are nice in and of themselves although one should have some of the skills/powers in the last segment at the requisite level to both take advantage of them and to stand a better chance at successfully running the quest.
With my secondaries I had Archery at the required level or close enough that leveling it didn't take much xp. I also just leveled Shadow Magic since it was my highest level and thus didn't take as much xp.
One thing is for sure. After running four characters through it and two of them at the same time followed closely by a third - it is one of the games more exasperating challenges, but well worth it once completed.

Yes, kind of like the Bowl of Blood, but not as frustrating. Yes, the BoB takes less runs (hypothetically) but getting killed after you get a gem and not getting gems at all is just annoying.
As for the shield: As Wetheril said, even if you only run the Cave like, 2 or 3 times a week, you'll eventually get it. And the XP is nice. Of course, you'll need Weaponry 80 to use it, but that can be blitz trained once you get the darned thing.

What I meant was hoard you general XP and use the specific you get from the Cave to level it up. Then, when you have the shield, you should have enough XP to raise your Weaponry to 80 AND level up the shield.

Re: Glittering Ice Shield. That item is free to acquire; and it's value at Tallys is easily 200+ AT's. It frees up the AT's used on shields to be used for other equipment. The gain is double!

I agree with elrond, while it does take over a month to get, its well worth it...
That said Tally is a master of not letting you out the door with more AT's than you went in with, you may get your AT's back for your shield but Tally will take em off you in exchange for some other shinee before you get out the door..

Since it's only once every 24 hours and I have nothing to do except finish Bowl of Blood (up to 8 gems now - hopefully I'll get to 10 this weekend), I'm taking everyone's advice and tacking the Ice Cave. Cleared it three times so far - 33 to go (sigh - I still wish it was only a dozen at most).

Didn't even bother with the Ice Cave the last two days - just doesn't grab me like Axepath.
Anyway, at the beginning of the Ice Cave there's a square that refers to a frozen adventurer in the wall. It's the only square like that. Can you use a skill, power or item to get anything?

No it is just flavor text. Many players, including myself, have wondered about that however.

For Tsuki at long last!
"Take it, it is yours," issues a low, sinister voice from somewhere nearby. You quickly glance around the chamber, but there is no sign of anyone else present.
"May what served me for three hundred years be your faithful protector," continues the voice. "Leave this place, and never return."
As your gaze falls back upon the carcass of the slain ice troll, you are dismayed to discover that the image of the shield has vanished. However, your eyes quickly dart to the frozen ground at your feet, where lies the object that has for so long been merely an apparition just beyond your reach.
You stare down at a magnificent, glittering shield of ice. Wasting no time, you pick up the weighty, frozen shield.
ITEM You've acquired: Glittering Ice Shield
You once again scour the chamber for any sign of whoever (or whatever) it was that spoke to you only moments ago, but you discover nothing and the voice is not heard again.
With the shield now safely in your possession, you turn your thoughts to finding your way out of this frigid lair.

I was grinding when all of the sudden it hit me: I'm strong enugh to do the Ice troll!
I've completed it twice but 34 more runs to go!!:eek: Thats crazy. I would've liked to get by christmas. I dont think thats happening.
All things considered I think Kane will be the only one to get it. Anri can keep Shield Of Vengeance and hopefully the Copper-Emblazoned items will be made avaliable again so that Tao can get that sheild.
I know the rewards for this scenario are great but this scenario isn't that enjoyable. I'd rather do Tarn.
I'd better get back to grinding. So tired...

I just remembered, if the Ice Troll is a troll(it's in the name if you didn't notice:D) shouldn't a troll-bont...um...bont against him?(that sounds awkward)
I didn't see its special activate against the Ice troll. Is it immune or is it my bad luck?
shadowblack
11-27-2009, 07:47 PM
Despite the name the Ice Troll is a troll-like elemental creature, and so it counts as an elemental, not a troll.

Nope, the "ice troll" isn't considered a troll as far as the troll-bont is concerned. The problem is that the game only considers monsters to be of a single type, even if you would think they'd be considered multiple types. For instance, if you fight an undead goblin, you would think either an undead weapon (Trielra's staff (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Item:1521_Trielra%27s_Staff), Creyn blade (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Creyn_Blade)) or a goblin-specific weapon (Goblindoom (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Item:1199_Goblindoom)) would work against them, right? Well, no. The game can consider them either a goblin or an undead, and it usually goes with undead, so Goblindoom won't affect them.
In this case, all the ice creatures in the ice troll's lair, including the big guy, are considered ice elementals. So a weapon that affects elementals, like the Blade of Elemental Rage (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Item:1341_Blade_Of_Elemental_Rage) or the Enchanter's Dagger (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Item:1356_Enchanter%27s_Dagger) will work with the ice troll (and all the brigands), but the Engraved Troll-Bont (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Item:859_Engraved_Troll-Bont) won't.
If you look at the expanded info for the ice troll by clicking on its link in the game, you'll notice it's described as a "troll-like" creature rather than an actual troll. I suspect this is the in-game justification for the troll-bont not working on it. :cool:

You get 128 xp to a power if your power doesn't fail. 24 xp to archery and a minimum of 136 combat xp from the troll. Plus a minimum of 32 xp to all S&P. This goes without saying that the run itself will now be made easier just by having the Ice Shield. I would advise running that spot every day.

YYEEAAAAYYYY!!!!!
So I ran it, got the shield, and was so excited that I went right back to my residence, used my Ice Shard, and went to start leveling it up. All of the sudden, it logged me completely out, and I realized that I hadn't saved. Started to go into panic mode, thinking that I would have to wait until tomorrow to try again. Fortunately, it didn't reset the timer, and I was able to do it again and get it a second time. So after 37 runs, I'm with texlaw, taking Christmas off from the Ice Troll.

Hey, guys. I was going through the Cave of the Ice Troll. Right as I was engaging the Ice Troll, I noticed this text.
-----------------------------------------------
"The hulking ice troll, its hateful gaze fixed on you from behind its lurid yellow eyes, steps in your direction and snarls viciously.
"A strange, silver glitter from amidst your possessions catches your eye."
With its fearsome bellows echoing off the walls, the ice troll suddenly charges across the chamber toward you..."
-----------------------------------------------
I suspect it was somehow connected to this item.
Rithwyra's Luck Coin (Use)
* Class: Misc
* Encumbrance: 0
This small, round, silver token (aptly described as a coin) is devoid of any markings.
The coin, which Rithwyra has said will help to bring you good fortune, glitters quite unnaturally.
Anyone have any thoughts? Can anyone without one of these confirm this?

EDIT: Sorry - just seen your CHR post, so I guess the answer's 'no'! The glitter will become clear later, and no, it's not to do with the Luck Coin.

Allura just finished run #2 and survived with little trouble (had to rest a lot though). She couldn't get the xp for using magic against the Troll since none of her powers are to level 70 yet but she got the Archery reward.
I have no clue when she made her 1st run but according to the Wiki when I checked the text description, it was run #2.
Maybe by this time next year, she'll have her ice shield.....
