Adventurers, Test Your Might!

Beginning later tomorrow (7/7) adventurers will be able to register and take part in the Stone Hurl Challenge, set to take place in Zumryn's famous battlegrounds.

This special event will run from Tuesday, July 7th through Sunday, July 12th.

Competitors will attempt to hurl a massive stone (dubbed 'The Breaker' by Zumryn) as far as they can across a measured and marked stretch of ground.

The difficulty of this challenge is great, but so are the rewards!

The top four finishers will win prizes of 64, 48, 32, and 24 Adventurer Tokens, respectively.

Adventurers seeking to participate in this special event will be required to pass a basic test of strength (and part with a small quantity of gold) before being allowed to register.

I just hope it's not MR related, because if that is the case I won't even stand a chance...

MR would be ridiculous. Are we going to fight the stone?

The challenge is now life. The price is 250 gold. You pick three random numbers, with the following bonuses:
Might*5 (yes, that's multiplied by 5)
Body*3
Agility*0.5
Spirit*0.5
Luck*0.5
Max bonus is 190.

My numbers were 281, 276 and 219 :(

You can try once every 6 (SIX) hours.

GM's answer to a question I sent him:
Hi, yes if more than one character is tied for a particular place (1st, 4th, etc.) each of the
characters occupying that place will receive the prize for that spot.

My first attempt for today:
290
275
233 :(

I still beat my first attempt, but it's hardly enough.

First off where can I buy some spinach. Two characters at 5'9" and two at 5'10" - sheesh. Actually, I forgot to save Hawk's 5'10" heave, well lob would be more appropriate (where's that darn strikeout function) in exasperation. Well at that distance or lack thereof I don't think missing the save is gonna hurt anything.

Hmmmmmm..... farcical fractured ego aside, if this was r/l I wonder how long it would take the doping allegations to surface due to real fractured egos.

Well, I share w/ my dad, and he's out of town doesn't have internet access. I was talking to him on the phone and telling him about SHC and I offered to run his characters through for him.

- Rank |- Name |- distance
8 | Melvin Twain [thinman] | 6 feet, 9 inches
11 | Tharvald [thinman] | 6 feet, 6 inches
14 | Myrenne [thinman] | 6 feet, 3 inches
15 |Alanne [thinman] | 6 feet, 2 inches

I'm Alanne. Melvin was #3 yesterday. Myrenne's first roll today was 191. This doesn't belong in this thread, but Tharvald won a prize in the Tallys raffle ToT.

scout1idf
07-09-2009, 03:23 PM
So, what did you roll?

I don't know exactly, but I think all three were between 280 and 295.

This morning's rolls for all 4 of mine were pretty bad. Poor Allura barely got it past her toes.

thingirl
07-09-2009, 03:35 PM
Hey, Scout, when a player goes to throw the stone, it says something like "It'll take some effort to throw it farther than (insert #1 here) did." What does it say when SCOUT (your character) goes to throw it.

barn42
07-09-2009, 05:04 PM
thought I had worked out formula for distance . Mine have thrown the total numbers added together ; divided by 10 rounded down in inches everytime .

total rolled including bonus 815 = 81.5 round down to 81 inches = 6 ft 9 inch

unfortunately scout has done 7 ft 4 inch and the formula would produce an ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM of 7 ft 3 inch . 190 bonus (all straight 20's) 100 rolled each time = 290x3 =870 87 inches = 7 ft 3 inch

Hastifer
07-09-2009, 05:56 PM
Then it might be on a graduated scale -- as in, the value "per point" changes as the total value increases. (if a roll of 1 is worth 1 (1/1), and a roll of 5 is worth 6 (1=1.2), 10 is worth 13 (1=1.3), and so on... or a similar concept)

Or... he might just be rounding "up" from a lower value than standard practice would dictate (7'3.1" rounded up to 7'4" wouldn't be inconceivable)

Edit: Ignore the above, BUT maybe he adds a small bonus for getting the max roll

Ka keng

Woo hoo, Virago just took first with 7 feet 6 inches.

Guess they won't be saying "you throw like a girl" in the Battlegrounds - for now at least.

My other characters, the boys, went off brooding to get drunk and do other "manly" things like smashing things, cursing, fighting and wenching. ;)

Well fortunately Virago's luck is holding so far and the text listed her name with the same text as if it was one of my other characters.

It doesen't say anything about the #1 spot. I didn't think to copy and paste it.

As thingirl posted I didn't get a name with any of my characters when there was a tie for first.

Also I didn't think to copy Virago's text, hopefully for her that luck will hold and I can edit it in after her next run.

Wonder how any ties will be dealt with? Will everyone get the full amount of ATs or will the prize be split?

Pure luck and I hate it, but I have to try, knowing full well I won't get squat but frustration for my wasted effort.

I wish I could just ignore it and save myself the disappointment, but the reward is too good not to try.

I completely and utterly sympathize..
Most of my rolls are at or below 30, which equates to most of my throws being in the upper 4 - lower 5 feet marks.

Except for my second throw of the competition which got me in the top..15 with 6' 5".

WOO Dranikos just took 1st with 7' 7''! (a 62, 88 and 87 if you're curious what kind of rolls pull THAT off). Considering my internet was out most of this week and I've only done 4 (including that one) throws I'm rather happy with that.

Wonder how any ties will be dealt with? Will everyone get the full amount of ATs or will the prize be split?

Your answer is on page 2.

GM's answer to a question I sent him:
Hi, yes if more than one character is tied for a particular place (1st, 4th, etc.) each of the
characters occupying that place will receive the prize for that spot.

The wild-haired lad known only as Greeny, one of Zumryn's trusted assistants, steps forward and recites for you what few rules there are that govern the Stone Hurl Challenge.

"You can try to toss the stone once every six hours," he says. "Your longest toss will always stand as your official mark for the contest. Simple enough, right?"

A small crowd of onlookers has gathered to watch your attempt at tossing the weighty chunk of stone that Zumryn has dubbed 'The Breaker'.

"'The Breaker' -- It breaks the spirit of the one who can't lift it and breaks the back of the one that does," mutters someone in the crowd.

"When you're ready," says Greeny, bowing ceremoniously as you step up to the stone.

As your hands grasp the jagged sides of the massive rock, your eyes gaze out across the measured and marked stretch of ground in front of you. Tossing this piece of rock any distance at all is going to prove to be a challenge.

No special message if you're in the lead when you throw it.

Well at least if Virago's got to be knocked off the top it's by active forum members.

Thanks as I completely overlooked that or completely forgot reading it. :o Either way thanks again and reps to you and Shadowblack.

No special message if you're in the lead when you throw it.

I'm guessing that's because zmflavius is tied with you. I barely had time to run my four before heading out the door this morning for work so I didn't have time to copy Virago's text and to be honest I'm not sure if the text for Virago still had her name as I just clicked and saved times four. I do know the first time she ran it after getting the lead, albeit temporarily, :( ;) it listed her name when she ran it.

This mult-quote option is nice. A lot quicker and handier than the old forum - or at least the way I did it there.

Ditto and I'm thinking Virago finished in third but I can't access the leaderboards or anything else related to the Stone Hurl. Also there is nothing behind the blue door, yet. I'd say the closing was automatically set up and once the contest data is collected we'll get further instructions.

Congratulations to the top prize winner(s) :D and to all the runner-ups :). I ran my characters "willy nilly" through there to get them one more shot before the server struck midnight. Completely forgot about the time lag till I was running them - luckily I got them through not that it mattered as all thier throws were low.

Would one of/the top prize winner(s) post the details of the "bonus" prize, especially if it isn't listed for the rest of us?

Hmm, perhaps the GM needs to work on the definition of "through". Usually when you say something runs through a given day / time it includes that day / time... In this case saying the event ran "until" Sunday would have been more accurate.

Actually the server time and the GM is in the Eastern US time zone which I also happen to be in - it seems the contest closed around midnight.

Which reminds me I wonder how much the server time is off - I'm guessing a bit past 30 minutes fast.

Just checked and it's about 32 minutes fast by my figuring - save back to back and allow to get the time stamp and adjust by time allowing for the one minute game save reset.

Dranikos
07-12-2009, 04:21 AM
I'm eastern as well, and it's 26 minutes fast. But my point is that, for example, when a newspaper ad says a sale runs from, say, june 23 through june 29th. The sale is still in effect if you go on june 29th.

The battleground says the event runs through July 12th, but here it is, July 12th, and it's closed. So like I said, "Until" would be more accurate than "Through".

8,192 xp applied to general...

XP +2,048 You've been awarded 2,048 Experience...
2048 xp applied to All Skills and Powers...

"It produces a rather strange effect, does it not?" Zumryn grins and slaps you on the back. "If I'm to tell you the truth, I've got quite a few of those lying about -- under lock and key, mind. Just a small gift to you, Trent. Thank you, and congratulations on your success!"

You speak with Zumryn for several minutes before at last taking your leave of the master of the battlegrounds. He bids you farewell and again congratulates you.

"""Zumryn congratulates you on your success in the Stone Hurl Challenge and promptly hands you a pouch containing your prize of Adventurer Tokens.

AT + 64 You've acquired 64 Adventurer Tokens.

"An impressive showing it was," he says, meeting you in a shoulder cross. "I had never before seen anyone hurl that cursed rock past six feet. Well, I suppose I should have known I'd see something special from you, though I daresay you surpassed even my loftiest expectations. Well done! Here, I've something else for you..."
Zumryn produces a palm-sized black stone orb and holds it up for you to see.
"A little something I'd like for you to have," he says. "Call it another prize, if you so choose, but I'd prefer to think of it as a gift from me to you. You really don't know how very grateful I am for your presence here and for your success. As you might know, your success quiet readily translates into my own good fortune!"

Actually there's no combat involved - at least on the first one there wasn't.

The first couple posts should give some insight as I'm guessing SHC II will be similar if not identical to the first one.

AT prizes and a nice xp boost to the top four? (iirc) winners. Stats and luck figure in and you get a toss every six hours. And don't forget about the wind.

And here's the wiki page, http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Quest:The_Stone_Hurl_Challenge

Note: I'm adding some tags and going to do a mod edit in the first post re: when the posts end for the first contest and start for the second one. Also edited thread title.

I looked at the wiki page. Since virtually everyone has 20 in all stats, whoever gets the 100 on the random roll will win.

That's not necessarily a bad result, just seems a bit ... uninspired.

Now, maybe we could hurl the stones AT someone, say someone who's been stealing KBs in the MPs ...

THAT would be a contest (lol).

Edit: Ok, now I get the mechanics - and again, three really bad rolls. The nice thing is I'm still 10th even with the really bad rolls. Give me some really GOOD rolls and we'll see.

Edit: Highest roll was a 53 - sigh. Bettered my last performance, but that's not saying much.

NOTE: I notice the wiki page indicates the following rewards for the first contest,

1st Place - 64 Adventurer Tokens
2nd Place - 48 Adventurer Tokens
3rd Place - 32 Adventurer Tokens
4th Place - 24 Adventurer Tokens

Adventurers tied for distance will share rank, and thus they'll all receive the appropriate prize.

Also, in addition to the AT prizes, every one on the winner's list received 8,192 General XP and 2,048 XP to All skills and powers.

Actually I noticed this and commented earlier re: the difference but after looking at the results for the first contest I'm almost positive with fourth place in SHC did NOT receive any rewards as two of my alts were 4th place finishers and I don't recall getting any rewards. In fact I seem to recall the GM opening things back up for a day ("misunderstanding" with the announced/posted deadline iirc) which ended up with one (maybe both) of mine being pushed outta third and a payout.

I'll try to find SHC I's rules or some other post confirming that from this thread and edit accordingly.

EDIT: Jeez louise talk about confusing me, lol. From the opening post and subsequent ones it looked like I should have/did receive a payout. Seems there's a bit of a discrepancy with the final leaderboard and the winners list.

Iirc the leaderboard updates every so often. So I'm guessing there was some last minute shuffling after the last posted leaderboard when the GM closed the event and the final tally.

I'm just glad that there was a discrepancy as I was starting to really wonder (to quote donmoody) - Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot. ;)

Actual winners list for SHC I from the wiki which is also posted here.

Seems second place winner Galen [birdman] isn't in the earlier list which pushed both my fourth place characters outta the prize count. Must've came in under the wire so to speak.

With 3 minutes before Scout's next attempt, I decided to go and get his Rithwyra's Luck Coin.

Half way home I decided to check his inventory and found he already had it.
"5 feet, 11 inches," announces Greeny, looking up from the rock now half-embedded in the ground and saluting you with an approving nod. "Not a bad toss!"
I guess the luck ran out a long time ago......

Randomness Rant!

Elrohir just rolled 93, 97, 94 with a "gentle breeze" and got 7 feet and 1 inch! Damn it! I didn't think the wind conditions played a role in this challenge.

Not that I will ever get rolls that high, but now I know to wait for something other than a gentle breeze.

I like your post better than anything I could do - and especially right now. (Would just ramble on half-asleep - like I'm doing! :)) Thank Scout for giving me the idea. :)

Elrond: what are you complaining about, I had no time to toss pebbles around, true, so scarcity of attempts (I have one throw so far - edit: two, now, since I forgot about this post... And this time there was indeed a 280... first toss - I checked - was not 6'11'' but 6'8'', and this second one didn't make it to six - all rolls were above 200...), and all that, I ended up with some 6' 11'' I believe... But your roll results puzzle me: all three rolls of mine were above 200, with one of them, unless my eyes are already through the looking glass, asleep, was above 280... (Maybe mine were inflationary numbers... :))

You're referring to the adjusted rolls, with your bonus added. Elrond was referring to the initial 1-100 'dice rolls'. My bonus is 190, so if I roll a 90 the result is 280. Not that Rhia seems to be able to achieve anything more than about 60 so far...

Elrohir's bonus is also +190. How cruel Zum can be? And the stone lives true to its name: The Breaker. It has broken Elrohir's spirits!

Have I left that thought untouched! Thank you Dooli - of course... The bonus... it's constant, no use considering it.

http://www.avatarsdb.com/avatars/headbang.gif

Well, I have my usual excuse - awake and active for nearly thirty hours now. Although 'active' might be unfavourably relative even compared to a turtle, at this point... (I was about to say - and still will say it - "my head for a horse..." Yes, I know... That tired... Cognitive enough to realise how stupid that is, but dissonant enough to proceed writing it down. Will be fun to read this when I'm rested. Makes for a good entry in the "Five word story" though, I think. :))

(edit) 'My' bonus is also 190... and standing slightly taller currently, at 7'2''... I can see somewhat farther... The air is rarer and smells of edelweiss... I can see angels and heroes up above... They are turning in my direction... and saying something in a tremendous rumble, which makes it harder to understand... 'What's that?...
Ah, right... shut up and sit down, you can't see the show - got it.'

There is a new mini-encounter at the Stone Hurl challenge. I will post more as time permits.

OK, in a nutshell you meet a sorceress from Asphyr. You bump into her and she is very rude and threatening to you. You have the options ignoring her and proceeding to the challenge, trying to apologize again or demanding an apology from her. If you choose to ignore her nothing else happens and you proceed to the Breaker. If you try to apologize, she gets madder and hurls a spell at you; you can try to stop it with Fortification or Telekinesis 50+ (I failed). You then have a pretty easy subdual fight and get a little combat xp and 64 to general and she storms off. You can then proceed to the Breaker. If you try to make her apologize, you have a skill check. You have to get a 75, my bonuses were 45. If you succeed, she apologizes, introduces herself and you get 64 general xp and move on. I don't know what happens if you fail the roll.

Anyway, it will be interesting to see if this develops more.

Edit: Spencer chose to demand an apology and made the roll. She apologized and introduced herself.

Durgin chose to try to apologize and had to fight her. You get +8 to Fortification if you make your first roll, 8 combat XP and 64 general and she storms off, as stated earlier.

Thanks Spencer as Hawk chose to move on and I thought I'd fouled up so since my throw was lower than be best so I quit without saving. It'll be interesting to see if he gets the option again once the timer resets.

Still have the alts to run. Btw Spencer was wondering how you nailed down three options with two characters or do you have a third?

She apologized and promised to come to Camelot House to demonstrate how sorry she was. I guess I know where to put the jeweled arch now (lol).

Edit: So there is no confusion, the above is just a joke - there is no such option.

OK some more data....

Esoteric,

chose to apologize again and instead of using a power (Fort/Tele @ L50) chose to disrupt her attack which triggered a check. Parameters - 50 or better to pass. Bonuses for Agility 1:1, Body and Luck 2:1.

Success startles her and she falls back - no xp award. Text indicates she's not trying to kill you so a subdual is triggered.

Defeat her for minor combat xp (she was 3+ for Esoteric) and 64 gen xp.

Virago,

chose to make her apologize which triggers a check. 75 or better to pass. Bonuses - Diplomacy +21 @ L85, Mind and Aura 2:1.

Success results in 64 general xp as Spencer indicates and here's the text,

You're completely taken aback when your bold stance results in the woman relaxing her stance and offering you a sincere apology.

"I'm certainly not the friendliest soul you'll ever run into, but you were justified in taking offense," she says. "I trust that you will forgive me and that we may put this unpleasant encounter behind us."

You graciously accept her apology and introduce yourself. She initiates a shoulder cross and tells you that her name is Jirilsa. You learn that she is a sorceress from Asphyr and that she has come to Iron Crown Isle as an emissary of the Grey Mage.

You speak with Jirilsa for several minutes, listening with interest as she relates to you some of the details of her recent travels.

"Well, I must be on my way," she says at last. "Good luck with the contest...whatever it is. I don't know that I'd care to try and lift that stone."

You bid her a farewell and watch as she departs, slipping away through the crowd of adventurers and onlookers that throng the edge of the field.

Without further delay, you turn and make your way over to 'The Breaker'.

Voltan chose to make her apologize and barely passed the check with a 75 so still unknown what happens if you fail it. I'm guessing combat.

EDIT: More data.....

If you choose to make her apologize and fail the check she thrusts out her hand and you get the same options as if you choose to apologize again.

Used Fort for 8 xp and went to combat - a subdual. If you defeat her she slips through the crowd.

None of mine beat their best scores so I opted to quit w/o saving so IF they get another shot at the encounter when the timer resets I should be able to pin more down.

I tried that with Hawk and got the you cannot quit now text.

Spencer did you quit from the rewards screen before going to toss the stone?

I'm thinking you did because I hit the continue option after the end/rewards screen which is probably why I got the cannot quit with Hawk.

(I love to leave them these crumbs upon which they can swoop in and gorge... ;) :D)

I just had eight hours' worth of uninterrupted, comatose sleep, I guess - after spending some forty hours awake - and since this poor overworked laptop was still on, and my Sryth tab still had me logged on when I clicked on it - passed out in the middle of BHC, I think it was... - I decided to continue testing the timer reset for SHC... and yes, you guessed it: I am treated like the foolish man we are (;)) by this 'Dawn of a new day'... Almost clicked past it in my waking grogginess to proceed with the testing, when I thought 'Hold on! There's something different!... There's someone goading me AGAIN!...' ;)

-- 'Haven't I seen her at the time of The Great Big Hare's Generosity Event?' --

Well, whether she was or was not at the Great Mammal festival of March - April Token-Toss ["edit. note" - get your 'Super Secret Decoder Rings' ready, boys and girls, this is all top-secret coded stuff! :)] is almost immaterial - I love these random strong women that appear intent on teaching me a lesson mainly on account of my belonging to the 'Nation of Dogs,' the sub-species called 'Men' :D ... I almost feel like telling them 'oh, what the hell, go ahead, I'll take a punch for our collective f-ups - you deserve a free round at least, and more; go ahead, ring my bell, just aim for the chin, not below the belt - keep that one for for the ones trailing their tongue behind them...' :D So there I am, another challenger bent on teaching me a lesson, as you all noticed...

Here's the text that's not been posted yet, unless I am still too groggy to have noticed:

As you make your way over to 'The Breaker', mentally preparing yourself to lift the massive slab of stone, you're nearly sent tumbling when you accidentally bump shoulders with a tall woman moving away from the contest field. The dark-haired woman, clad in a studded leather vest, over which is draped a green cloak, turns and curses at you.

"Watch your step, if you please," she says, scowling. "Clumsy fool." [edit. note - I beg your pardon?!... :)]

Not wishing to make more of the incident than necessary, you humbly offer her an apology. Much to your surprise, your well-intentioned gesture is disdainfully rejected.

"Another word from you and I'll see fit to teach you a few manners," she snaps, squaring herself with you as she defiantly places her hands on her hips. [edit. note - :) and standing akimbo in a challenging fashion too... this is the point when I'm tempted to say 'ah, what the hell, go ahead...' :)]

Ignore her and continue toward 'The Breaker'...
Apologize to her again...
Ask her to apologize to you...

Well, there ya go... another 'illogical ramble' brought to you by the good people of Monsanto -

"Don't forget to eat your FishApples! Remember: a FishApple a day keeps world hunger at bay, and our farmers-in-bondage buying our FishApple seeds by the tonnage! (World domination, here we come!!!)" ;)

-- Sorry... :o
My mind is "free-range" --
I like to let let it roam,
unless there's reason to moan
(and b... )
Mens sana in corpore sano, neh? :D
(et animum mortis terrore carentem :))

I'll just be tootling along presently - chip-chip :) --

Just ran it again and added another choice. Still have Voltan to run to possibly pin down what happens if you fail the check on the apologize again option but with a 50 or better and a 40 bonus it may be hard to pin down.

And as long as you don't finish out the encounter and get to the "Hurl the Breaker" option you can quit before the timer starts.

Scarbrow
06-21-2011, 11:51 AM
If you try to apologize again she attacks you outright.

If you fail the Fortification/Telekinesis check you receive damage (~35 for me) and proceed to combat

If you fail the Diplomacy check to make her apologize, you proceed to the Power check, then combat.

Yeah, my characters were pretty lame today :p

Has anyone tried this and had problems of any sort?

Interested in anything, really, but here are some possible ones for feedback:

1) - timer for "StoneHurl" not working

2) - timer for "StoneHurl" working, but one or more of the others isn't

3) - any of the timers losing focus / stopping countdown / showing false "Ready" status / showing incorrect number of minutes (greater than 1 min, as that much is acceptable)

4) - any of the timers showing the same amount of time remaining as another event's timer, but not matching with the game's own countdown for that particular event

I can't think of any other possible glitches at the moment, but you get the idea. I'd like to know if any big grinders out there have noticed anything, assuming anyone is using the SHC-modded script.

I have three timers running, all tracking correctly their own events, logged in and out repeatedly, did what I could, but I don't have large enough blocks of uninterrupted time to run around all eight events, so:

ideally, I'd like to know if all eight timers displayed are running correctly, tracking as they should, what they should.

Thank you in advance for any feedback.

[B]Under Review
Zumryn would like to inform those adventurers taking part in the second Stone Hurl Challenge that SrythAdventurer's recent, jaw-dropping score is under review.

The master of the Battlegrounds has made no secret of the fact that he believes the score to have been fraudulently achieved.

It is widely suspected that SrythAdventurer set the stone down just over the twenty-four foot mark while no one was paying attention and then boldly acted as if he had hurled it that far.

Zumryn is currently seeking witnesses who can substantiate SrythAdventurer's implausible claim the he actually tossed 'The Breaker' over 24 feet.

BTW:

92+62+81+strong wind = 7 feet 8 inches. Still my best toss so far. Go Maressea, strong girl!

In a fierce wind, my first two scores rivaled Scarborw's, but my last was a 12. Only tied my 7'1" - darn.

Of course, when no one was looking I hurled the Breaker all the way to Camelot House. Really, if you go to Camelot House the breaker is lying in the courtyard. All my servants will swear to it.

My distance seems so random.

7'1" from a 95, 63, 42

and then 6'5" from 95, 75, 80 O.o

DonMoody

In a gentle breeze I had 5, 18, 16 for 5'0".

Best rolls ever - 97, 85, 81 in a strong wind.

Only 6' 11" - stil haven't beaten my score of 7'1".

I'll talk to SrythAdventurer and find out his secret.

Just now, with "a fierce, ravaging wind tears through the courtyard" and rolls of 72, 88, 95 [total of 255], I got ...

"6 feet, 10 inches"

then (same wind) with rolls of 28, 44, 95 [total of 167], I got ...

"6 feet, 1 inch"

Not sure how I previously managed 7 feet, 2 inches ...

Maybe it makes a difference which direction the wind is blowing! :)

Exactly, Dooli! I wouldn't be surprised if someone rolled 99, 98, 100 and got: "Failure, you drop the breaker on your foot! 99 sp lost!"

I say that after having rolled 100, 97, 57 with the "Howling gale" and getting 6'10" (didn't beat my previous best). Damn it; that's just too effin' random to call!

I managed to tie my 7'1" with some middling rolls in a gentle breeze, so I truly have no idea.

I do think the rolls are weighted a bit, with the first counting more than the second and the second counting more than a third. I can't say why exactly, more like a feeling since seeing this type of mechanic also play out in the archery challenges.

The method in which this challenge operates baffles me beyond belief. My rolls were something like this. First roll - 93, second roll - 92 and third roll - 95 and the stone went a grand distance of 7' 0", which wasn't my best toss.

It did in a way offer some entertainment this week but after landing at 7' 3" the second day into the challenge, I haven't been able to get close except for the rolls above. I will admit I was happy when I got amazing luck as I did rolling all 90+, but was crushed when it didn't even break my best throw.

Just did my last attempt as there won't be time for another before the midnight bell sounds. A pre-congratulations to the top finishers in the competition.

The wind may influence the roll results, then the resulting numbers may determine a distance range including minimum and maximum values... or logarithmic values... or calculus limits... :) Then, another, latent roll, not displayed, may give your actual 'hurl' result in feet and inches...

Pffft... well, it's something.

I, too, have finished, and topped out at 7' 5", out of the money. C'est la vie. Congrats to the future winning hurlers.

Apparently my math skills aren't much better than my calendar reading skills. :o For some unknown reason (I'm loathe to admit self ignorance, lol) I thought the deadline was farther away.

Well I've got one more round left and two are in the money if their scores hold. I'm guessing SrythAdventurer will be dq'd which will raise their standings but not their awards.

I think the wind has no effect at all. I think its based on the number of tries. Like every 15 times you'll come out with a good roll so if you throw 7.0 then you need to keep taking turns until you play 15 more times and then you'll get a good roll again.

So, who wants to tell the GM he put the wrong message up?

This challenge is now over. Final results will be posted tomorrow (12/1). Prizes for adventurers finishing among the top 20 places, and for those archers who achieved scores of 3,330 or higher, will made available when the final results have been posted. Thanks to everyone who participated!

ahh but was that really the wrong announcement. Maybe the bow contest is coming back to.

... why not: we have plenty arrows warping on the sun-beaten porch or putrefying in our mouldy, unused quivers - not as if we have much use for them. ;)

SrythAdventurer has retained Lancelot to sue Zumryn for invalidating his toss.

Also, Srythadventurer will be including Kurtis in the lawsuit, since Kurtis clearly suffers from schizophrenia and his toss therefore should be invalid.

We expect the King to enter a temporary restraining order against Zumryn preventing final tally of the Stone Hurl Challenge II until such time as the lawsuit is complete.

Edit: SrythAdventurer's retainer slip bounced, so never mind.

Otherwise, I got the sam reward as Elrond - the "normal" reward for those under 7' is 1024/128.

Wow! Who could have said? A prize on one of my characters, on just two tosses each.

The winning text, for documentation purposes, from my character Maressea (it's the very first random prize, raffle or anything for her):

Congratulations! As one of the top finishers in the Stone Hurl Challenge II you've won one of Zumryn's fabulous prizes!

Collect your prize...

Zumryn congratulates you on your success in the Stone Hurl Challenge and promptly hands you a pouch containing your prize of Adventurer Tokens.

AT + 8 You've acquired 8 Adventurer Tokens.

Zumryn hands you the black orb. The moment you take possession of it, the orb vanishes with a blinding flash, and a surge of energy passes through your body...

The surging energy rapidly fades, leaving in its wake a strange tingling sensation that takes several minutes to disappear.

Because you managed to achieve a hurl distance of at least seven feet, your Experience reward has been doubled.

XP +2,048 You've been awarded a total of 2,048 Experience...
2,048 xp applied to general...

XP +256 You've been awarded 256 Experience...
256 xp applied to ALL Skills & Powers...

"It produces a rather strange effect, does it not?" Zumryn grins and slaps you on the back. "If I'm to tell you the truth, I've got quite a few of those lying about -- under lock and key, mind. Just a small gift to you, Maressea. Thank you, and congratulations on your success!"

You speak with Zumryn for several minutes before at last taking your leave of the master of the battlegrounds. He bids you farewell and again congratulates you.

SrythAdventurer has retained Lancelot to sue Zumryn for invalidating his toss.

As I said: the (nut-) case is all yours! Good luck with that! :D

Also, Srythadventurer will be including Kurtis in the lawsuit, since Kurtis clearly suffers from schizophrenia and his toss therefore should be invalid.

Well, now... you might be unfair to schizophrenics there, really...
While Kurtis might well be suffering from schizophrenia (I will not dismiss that out-of-hand), I see no obvious signs of it at all!
So stating that he "clearly suffers from schizophrenia" seems like a rash diagnosis, and possibly unfair, to say the least.

(Among schizophrenia's most recognisable symptoms, and the one most people associate with it, is the patient's difficulty to differentiate between real and unreal experiences (oh, boy... I'm posting this in forum tied to a fantasy-adventure role-playing game... ;)), but it also includes difficulties related to the forming of logical thoughts and arguments, as well as impaired emotional and social responses, even in situations that would generally be qualified as normal.
The illness can progress gradually, until it includes firmly held beliefs that are not rooted in reality or rational thought, as well as a firm conviction of having witnessed, or witnessing things (events, interactions) that did not, in reality, take place (hearing or seeing things that aren't real in any physical sense, and are typically only witnessed by the patient) - in other words "delusions," as well as "hallucinations." Several more symptoms are recognised, but none have to do with multiple personalities of the same individual.)

You probably mean dissociative identity disorder, or as it is commonly known, "split personality disorder" or "multiple personality disorder."
(Well, um... if we are to go only by the existence of "alts" in the game, there might be some serious trouble here... :D;) I'd not be surprised if players involved in that practice launch a counter-suit against Srythadventurer for defamation of character, perhaps even libel - or defamation of "alts," as the case may be - I'm not sure how the case will be set up... :))

We expect the King to enter a temporary restraining order against Zumryn preventing final tally of the Stone Hurl Challenge II until such time as the lawsuit is complete.

Well, that... or your party will be hit by a frivolous lawsuit charge... :D
Best of luck, Tex - mazel tov! ;)

Edit: SrythAdventurer's retainer slip bounced, so never mind.

Well, that brings up the obvious question: how far?... In feet and inches, if you don't mind! :D

Oh, well, never mind. All in all, I'd say: a lucky break for you - this may be the best outcome you could have hoped for (and never knew :D).

P.S.:
What's your favourite type of nut, Tex? ;)

Already sent. (Though I use in-game reporting for these things, as it readily tracks the "section number," and the source text containing the error is easily transferred to the reporting pane without having to switch away from the game, hence a quicker flow of reporting )

Report Type: Typo
Game Section #: 16389
Subject: "quiet" -> "quite"
"[...] As you might know, your success >>quiet<< readily translates into my own good fortune!"
..............
"quiet" (silent; muted; calm; &c.)

But while on typo hunt, you won't be "geting" first prize this time. ;)

The one photo of Billy the Kid (a lithograph I think) just sold for $2.5 million. The image on that type of photograph is reversed, so Billy appreared to be left-handed even though he was right-handed. Even Paul Newman played Billy as left-handed in "The Left-handed Gun" or something like that.

I figure all BillydaKid's internet posts should therefore go for, proportionally, about twenty-five cents (lol).

Edit: Yes, even if Billy writes them in "Swahili" (lol).

Congrats on that, Billy! And thanks for the background info, Tex.

Tetra,

Thingirl, spelling, and spell checks go back a couple of years. "Big Brother," as she called me when I berated her for spelling and other childish stuff, has a long history of attempting to correct, infuriating, scolding, joking, poking fun, and praising TG's forum postings and rants.

A father to some, without really understanding how, and a Big brother to another ... Elendil, Tallys' Apprentice, Elrond hasn't always played nice. And the young ones don't bother much with that. They take it in stride, and are easy on the old man and his antics.

But to give credit where it is due, TG's spelling has improved; or her mistakes have become much less frequent than before.

Nonetheless, TG correcting someone's spelling isn't something that passes by without a smile, smirk, laugh, or whatever emotion that brings up to a forum member.

... don't bother looking for one. :) Or perhaps there is a reason, but that's neither here nor there, and it doesn't weigh into the choice of that (affectionate) term.
As for using it: I'd just as soon discard it, than have it questioned or analysed. :) (I doubt there is anything Oedipal about it, so do not worry. :))

But it seems I've anticipated something, or have judged it necessary for other reasons to include a shielding clarification in parenthesis (in order to avoid this misinterpretation of my irreverent plea for 'playing nice'), which says: "I know you do." Well, I do know that.

Have I really been hard on you (or not sufficiently easy)? I hope I haven't - I really didn't mean to be.

I know something of the background story, have been necro-threading for nearly a year now, and understand the nostalgia. :)

I intruded on 'ancient history,' I know that too. I tend to do that if I feel like it, because I don't pay much attention to most notions of 'sacrosanctity' - but not with the intent of stepping on ancient toes, more to challenge 'the norm,' or expectations, as I think they tend to have a stifling, strangulating, deadening effect on exchange, self-expression, and most everything...
(Hm, such big words and sentiments... Oh, well... There may be more of that coming... Consider these things to be caused be caused by moderate sleep deprivation, and still take them with a grain of salt on top of that.)

The impetus is not to 'put down' but to 'shake up' - or in more serious cases, to openly challenge. And that really is just that: impetus. I can't stop much of it. Or, I suppose I could repress it, but I don't want to, for fear that might become a habit. :)

I have a tendency to correct others, as you do, I think, although the orthography usually takes back seat to whatever thought or feeling the (correctly, or misspelled) words happen to be wrapped round, unless I'm asked for corrections, as I am drawn to the heart of the matter (be it light heart or dark matter :)) - or else, I handle it more privately (personal choice).
Although some mistakes are too funny to pass by without poking at them with a stick, if I'm in the mood for that and they trigger my imagination, so I do understand what it's all about. :)

That being said, I never played whack-a-mole (?) - the game where you wait for something to poke its head up, and just as soon as it does, you slam down on top of it.

Maybe some acts get tired after too many repeated performances, and they can be safely retired in favour of some fresh material, that's all.

Or a less 'violent' example: I may love the sound of the cello, but if a cellist were to follow me around striking the same chord every other time I opened my mouth, I would tire of it in a hurry.
Enough to get me rolling my eyes after a while, and then, eventually, I expect I'd want to ask (maybe even yell at) the player to please stop doing that every time I open my mouth (which might be an exaggeration on my part, but I think I would be excused for getting carried away under the circumstances).

If my first comment, and now this one seems to argue against good, friendly 'rubbing,' that would again be a gross misinterpretation - in fact, I'll offer up my posts, especially the longer, rambling ones like this, for increased amounts of joking related to them (everything from a harmless comment to derision or ridicule), in order to maintain the entertainment quota. :)
And since I again write this at the very end of my waking hours and my stamina, it might make a prime candidate for all that, especially since I'm past the ability to proofread anything... :) (Have taken care of that now, as far as I can tell. :))

(Mind I don't promise not to react to commentary in whatever way my mood dictates, and just as I see fit. :D)

Again, I hope I didn't step on any toes during this sleepy stumbling about, but I'll look at it tomorrow, after waking, to check for any toenails that may have been trapped under these words, or stuck between them. ;) (Seems all right, or else I failed to judge it harshly enough - didn't get cut by anything sharp in there.)

EDIT: And from the Game Updates

"9/22/11 - Stone Hurl Challenge III
A contest fit for only the most hardened adventurers (and those unconcerned about the state of their backs) has returned to Zumryn's Battlegrounds on Iron Crown Isle. The Stone Hurl Challenge III is now live and waiting to test the might and mettle of Sryth's adventurers.

For your chance to win one of the grand prizes (Adventurer Tokens), please pay a visit to the Battlegrounds and look for the "Special battlegrounds events" option.

Unlike its predecessors, the third incarnation of the Stone Hurl Challenge allows adventurers to make a total of five tosses each day. These tosses can all be made at one time, making it much easier for everyone to get in the maximum number of throws before the end of the contest.

Good luck!"

I don't know how/if the wind plays into it this time, but Scout's 7'4" throw was during calm winds and his less than 7' throws just completed were also during calm winds.

Also, at 12:28 AM (server time) Scout got the message that he already threw 5 times today.

Ulric got there at 12:35 AM (server time) and could make his throws.

Scout went back and could throw.

It looks like the reset is 12:30 AM (server time) instead of midnight (unless there was a glitch).

I just sent an E-Mail asking about the reset time/glitch.

I'll post the answer when/if I get one.....

I just tried it in a fierce ravaging wind anddidn't get anywhere. First time was a blustering gale and I only got 6'10" even with great rolls.

Scout may have a point - I'll try to do it in calm winds and see what happens.

I figured as much but it's good to know for sure.

Just finished my runs for the day and on one of my alts throws which was under his previous best I quit without saving. When I returned that throw was counted and subtracted from the total for the day despite not saving.

Took a bit to find it but I think TG may have hit on it during the first event.

THAT'S IT!!!!!!!! It's a range for each number and/or plus wind strength. To bad the challenge ends in about 2 hours.

IF the wind is a factor it would seem there is a variable range with wind figuring in or maybe a wind modifier. Or it could be just plain ole luck. But I recall posts citing specific numbers in "heavier" winds not doing too well and came across some in my search. However there are other posts with high rolls in "low" winds coming up short, so......

Searching the thread for wind(s) or similar should yield some good info for anyone interested.

And for the record I've edited the mod edit in the opening post to indicate when SHC II discussion ended and SHC III began.

That's exactly the same as what we get told at the end of each attempt, right?
Please Note: Your toss won't officially be recorded until you SAVE YOUR GAME. Please save your game at your earliest convenience. The tosses you've made have already been recorded and will not be reset if you exit your game without saving.

Yeah but apparently I wasn't listening looking during my previous 40 attempts. Guess I'll have to go with blaming my clicking ritual which seems to need some work as well.

That or I can go with fabricating and blaming screen reload issues. ;)

EDIT: Actually I've been distracted keeping an eye out for SrtyhAdventurer.... yeah that's the reason. :)

If you have not checked the current ranking, there's a new leader (sadly not me):
1 KragDan [taragon] 8 feet, 1 inch

Wow. Just wow.

Today I finally got a 100 on my first roll... and then got horrible rolls on the other two rolls :(

Seeing the current leader board....

Rank | Adventurer |Score
1 | KragDan [taragon] |8 feet, 1 inch
2 | Zedalion [sbmagle] | 7 feet, 8 inches
3 | BillyDaKid | 7 feet, 7 inches
3 | Cyris [Cyris] |7 feet, 7 inches
4 | Handfast [grimbold] | 7 feet, 6 inches
4 | Kadota [bcournoyer] | 7 feet, 6 inches
5 | Rune [meduwyn] | 7 feet, 5 inches
6 | Durge [racey] |7 feet, 4 inches
6 | Kaspian [memoryking] | 7 feet, 4 inches
[B]6 | SCOUT [scout1idf] | 7 feet, 4 inches
..... I hope the GM decides to add to the rewards.

Scout hasn't caught a break with distance since his first set of throws......

I haven't even tied 6'10". I've gotten several hundreds, just never on the same set of throws - rest are always $%^$%$.

Neither has Kermit. He got 6'8" in his first set of throws, and hasn't bettered it since. I think his worst was 5'4"...

I'm confused...

Gentle Wind:-

83 94 93 = 7 feet ties with my previous best

next roll

85 92 10 = 7 feet 1 inch - my new PB

I have no idea how these distances are worked out now.

Well it was fun while it lasted.

Unless the GM extends the competition or changes the quantity of prize winners, Scout and company are out of the running....

Today's http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-sick029.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php) netted nothing worthy of reward......

NO!!! NOT THE CRYSTAL BALL!!!

Incidentally (ha!): were you serious about having stored quivering tar blobs in your residence?... :)

Picks of 90, 81 and 100 netted Trent a total of 7.0 feet while a gentle wind was blowing. These challenges are confusing to say the least. I broke out with a very healthy and probably way too loud WTF after that one.

Yup. Dead serious. Or half-asleep. but... what's the difference? :D

About the blobs... well... uh... look... I am a pack rat. And you see during all of those renovations and added vaults and dungeons and secret tunnels and wards and stuff... I somewhat lost track of what is and isn't there. So I will have to come back to you about the blobbies. If I do not come back... in a month or two, please, do come find me with a couple of archmages in tow. I may be stuck in some obscure corner... :P

Prizes and xp awards are ready.

All of mine who placed 8, 9, 10 and 11 with throws of 7'2", 7'1", 7'0" and 6'11" got the same reward, 2048 general and 256 AS&P.

Very nice. :)

He just carried it there when no one was looking. Zumryn was just too focused on SrythAdventurer to notice.

Lancelot would have complained, but he was too far back in the standings anyway.
