OK, so I just singed up for a free account so I could get the newsletter. I started a character and looked at her equipment and saw that she had the Enchanted Map that lets you see where you are in a dungeon. If I remember correctly, this item used to be gotten from the Caves of Westwold.

Actually, in the past you started without the map and you didn't get it from Westwold (at least as long as you were a free player). I got mine from the Stoneback Hill adventure once I became AG. As AG I was able to get the Enchanted map from Westwold for at least one character. I'm not sure about the current situation, though - perhaps the GM changed it so everyone starts with the Enchanted Map

Well, in the days of old when I first signed up, Conirinn gave me an enchanted map as Zmflavius first set out for Westwold. That account got deleted when I set out on a hiatus from Sryth. A few months ago, I signed back up, and I started with the Enchanted map in my inventory.

Shadowblack, you've bean around for a long time. Repped for the info.

Zmflavius, my situation is like yours. Alanne (my main and AG character) started in December 08 and got the map from Conirinn. My non AG character that I started today had it in her inventory.

I have started brand new just 2 weeks ago and I also had one in my new non AG account character.

Welcome! The wikki and this fourm are valuable sources of info. The wikki has a non AG start up page (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Non-AG_Startup), and a Character start up page (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Character_Startup_Guide). The second one is aimed at AG players though, so be warned. Also, since this is your first character, you might want to play for a while before wikkiing.

I definitely got it from Westwold when I first started and when I more recently started my free account it appeared in both characters inventories.

Maybe changed since the Explore the Realms have some mapped encounters and can be done before Westwold and have also been opened up for free players.

Yeah, I remember trying to do A Haunting in Durnsig with no map when I decided to run it before Westwold at some point...

I just thought of something. If you have good (70+) Thievery and Woodsmanship and someone steels your Enchanted Map, would you be able to have a map of dungeons? Just a thought.

As long as you have Thievery/Woodsmanship you get the dungeon map even without the Enchanted Map - after all, it only does what the skills do.

I have corrected on the wiki, but thought it can't be bad to repeat it here: IF you don't have the Enchanted map on you when you start the quest, you'll get it from "Caves of Westwold". Maybe from Stoneback Hill too? I'll have to check.

Currently, only a few selected Pregenerated characters start without the map, though. When I started, you got it from Westwold.

Anyway, I just tested it. Stoneback Hill will in fact still give you the Map, at the Thane's chamber just before your second trip to the hill.

See http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Item:264_Enchanted_Map

EDIT: Ok, I found how to edit myself. Still pretty new to this forum

Speaking of edits, it doesn't show that you edited anything.

EDIT: it's happening to me too.

It actually wasn't so bad, since you basically just work your way around the outside. As long as you don't back-track, you don't have too many options.

All the new characters I've made (both on free accounts and new AG alts) for the last several months (and it has been MANY - dozens at least) have started with the Map in inventory.

It's been this way for most of this year. Before that, you'd get it from the Hawklor council when starting Westwold (no need to explore the caves) or from the Thane if you did Stoneback Hill first.

Also - on Edits. vBulletin gives you a grace period to edit without the notices. It defaults to five minutes, but Havoc might have changed the duration.

I don't know if I have just been missing this or it's new, but I noticed yesterday that instead of clicking on the directions (North, South.....) you can click on the map square for the direction you want to go.

It's not new. It's been like that for a long time.

What might be new is this:
The text under the map varries, and is either one these two:
Click a map square to move
Map Overview (help)

In the past it was only the second.

Yes, I was aware of this a few days ago when you guys were discussing the map directions in that thread. However, I'm much more used to clicking on "north, south, east, west" text. Not sure if this option has always been around, or if it was recently implemented.

Edit: Thanks for clearing that up Shadowblack.

Concerning the enchanted map...

... and hearking back to the last interview with the GM, it may be that the map has become an 'assumed' item, like the adventurers lantern; ie, items that adventurers are 'assumed' to carry with them at all times.

If so, don't do 'An Unpleasant Encounter' in Mirgspil, or "Barmaid's Honour' or the barfights in Talinus at with a really low Melee Rating. (20-ish) because if you lose any of those fights, they rob you bare, taking not only all your gold, but every bit of your equipment, including the Lantern and the Map.

ouch! those are the kind of thieves we need to encounter in the 'exploring the realm' since they are more likely to have gold/stuff on them <LoL>

LOL! Now that you mention it, it would be funny if you had a chance to get back "stolen stuff" through "explore the realms at random".

yup you've been able to click on the map squares for a long time. I click the map squares I find it much easier and faster.

As far as I can recall, I've been clicking on the map squares since I first started playing a year and a half ago. So no, it's not new.

My guess would be this:

The text under the map varries, and is either one these two:
Click a map square to move
Map Overview (help)

In the past it was only the second.

So it never used to say anything under tha map but "Map Overview", but now it sometimes says "Click a map square to move" instead. Seems likely you noticed that and gave it a try.

Some of us just noticed it sooner because we actually read the "Map Overview" when we first started playing...
