Thanks, everyone. (Oh, I suppose that means you, too, Texlaw. :))

Happy birthday, Lightwielder!

Anyway, because I call myself "Kori", I never considered that this was a common American name given to girls. Am I wrong? Is it one of those unisexual names?

I've seen "Cory" as a men's name more than once (for example, Cory Doctorow (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cory_Doctorow); also see Cory (name) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cory_%28name%29).) However, it's very common (in the U.S., anyway) to change male names to female names by changing a "y" at the end to an "i". Witness:

Randy -> Randi
Bobby -> Bobbi

and so on. So I can see why people seeing "Kori" might assume it was a female version of "Cory", especially since one of the stars of the popular show Mythbusters (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mythbusters) is a woman named Kari.

Good point Young Ned about the "i" modifications. I was thinking about a different spelling of Corey (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corey) by the way.

But to answer your question Badstench - when I think of Kori (however spelled) I think of it as a male name.

Have to say that checking anything on Historyorb.com is not necessarily going to give you anything like accurate results. They seem to be like Wikipedia, in that anyone can contribute stuff, but unlike Wikipedia you get no source attribution, discussion, problems flagged up, etc etc. I went through a stage of sending in corrections, but it got too depressing because there were so many of them.

Not that this thing about the Scillitan martyrs is wrong, just a word of warning!

Today is the last time you will see new additions to the Birthdate entries. The current manifestation of this thread was begun on July 15, 2009, and has now been a little more than 1 year in existence. As such, the historical birthdates and events have already been noted, and continuing with the thread in this format would simply be a repetition of the past.

Individual dates still exist for people to access and reference (if you can spend a few minutes trawling through all the posts to find the relevant date).

I hope you’ve enjoyed reading the daily lists as much as I’ve enjoyed bringing them to you. I would like to thank Doolipalally for filling in when ‘Real Life’ demanded my attention, and to everyone who offered corrections and advice when the reference site proved not to be wholly accurate.

The winding-up of the ‘daily lists’ doesn’t preclude your offer of birthday wishes to individuals as those dates fall due. The recognition between individual members has been a part of this forum that has added to the spirit of community and friendship, and is something I would like to see continue.

In closing, I wish everyone happiness today, tomorrow and whatever your special day is in the year ahead.

And also send a special shout out to…

Happy Birthday Dariel!
