I see that there will be an Archery Tournament on the island soon.
shadowblack

To avoid confusion: The tournament will be in the Battlegrounds, not on Saarngard Isle.
I usually think about Saarngard when someone mentions an island.

And, I suppose it will be another random number tournament, except this time, we'll have bonuses from our archery skill.

Hopefully this time skill will be more important than luck, and not just becuase I am the third best in Archery in the game. Depending on how long until the tournament starts I might even equal Thordon in this skill.

Good point Shadowblack and if the skill plays a part I may end up spending some general on it since I only need about 2k to get Hawk's to 80. Although that's a small amount, due to my lack of playing time compounded by the bowl gems, I'm not certain I can grind it out in specific xp before it opens. If not I'll wait and see before deciding to burn any general xp, even that little.

I don't know about anyone else but considering the latest quirky randomness in the Battlegrounds (Stone Hurl and Temple appearances) and the fact that it's an archery contest (Lists of Talwarden anyone?) I'm predicting.... ".....you've just attained Legendary status in disgruntlement and frustration". ;)

The GM has a knack for unannounced updates. I wish we could close some of the "outstanding" adventures like the Sword of Merzekk before doing some of these new updates. But who's to complain about game updates? :)

Just another thought. Maybe some past discussion points regarding archery and/or bows will be implemented as part of this tourney. It'd definitely be interesting to have some new bows to choose from - for flavor if nothing else.
Chareos
07-16-2009, 12:38 PM
That would be most excellent :-) I would like to have a new bow. A tiny, puny short bow does not really go with the rest of my equipment whereas a new compounded, recurved longbow made from the bones of an ancient dragon and strung with magically enhanced platinum wire might just about do it lol Oh, and while I'm at it it's studded with all sorts of precious gems, is a one off item available only to me, raises my archery skill to I don't know let's say 1000 and makes me a cup of tea and a bacon sarnie whenever i want. Now that's what I would call a bow :-D

Don't forget the arrows should leave the string at night and transform to needles and knitting needles, repairing your equipment while you sleep.

A boltsling is highly unlikely, given that they are illegal in Tysa.

From Boltsling (http://www.sryth.com/ci.php?f_c=showinfo.inc&f_infoid=boltsling):
Boltslings have been almost universally outlawed throughout all of the North Broadlands.

Can't recall the specifics at the moment but there's also mention of them during game content and their being outlawed.
They are mentioned three times, I believe: Firstly, during Seven Goblins: The Hills North and West, where a goblin is taking potshots at you with one. Secondly, when you do some job for Thane Pyrond, probably it was the Yeltham crew, and an enemy is using a boltsling. And finally, during the RoI, on the final challenge, your evil clone might hold up a boltsling and shoot you.

That sounds vaguely familiar - lol. Definitely makes me think of some D&D non-standard items from my groups - a lot of them were pretty much flavor items but prized and often coveted nonetheless.

From the latest news:
8/19/09 - A Tournament of Bows
A grand archery contest is nearly set to begin at Zumryn's famous Battlegrounds on Iron Crown Isle.
Beginning tomorrow evening (8/20), adventurers skilled in Archery may attempt to qualify for the tournament by paying a visit to Narsaryn at the Battlegrounds on Iron Crown Isle.
The contest will run for seven full days, with participants able to attempt to better their best scores every few hours.
Zumryn and a mysterious, but generous partner, will be providing grand prizes for the top finishers.
Bows and arrows will be available, but contestants are free to use their own equipment, if they so choose.
------
"Bows and arrows will be available, but contestants are free to use their own equipment, if they so choose." What in the world does that mean? I'm gonna head over to Tallys to see if he has any bow for sale. (Or maybe it just means that you can enter if you don't have a bow.)
EDIT: No Tallys bows. But that does bring up the question: Where does one buy arrows?

Actually, arrows used to be available once upon a time. It was however a lot of trouble keeping your quiver stocked. The GM then decreed that henceforth it would be assumed that part of being an archer was having maintaining a stock of arrows, which let to the present day situation.

Nice little side scenario with a couple options and possible later ramifications.
TIP: If you're gonna experiment with multiple runs with the side scenario do so before you participate in the tourney as exiting without saving still trips the timer as expected. Of course, I thought of that after :( I ran the challenge - luckily Hawk's performance wasn't what I would think will be good enough to place by the close - 1800 on the nose to be exact.
Also his archery level (80) allowed him to max out on the bonus at all the ranges for the contest. It'll be interesting to see how the archery levels figures into the contest.

Voltan's last shot with maxed bonuses - too bad his other shots weren't this good.
You've Picked a Random Number...
255
You picked a number at random between 1 and 100.
You picked 100 modified by 155 for a total of 255 .
Your arrow streaks across the contest field and plunges into the painted target...
...THWACK!
The end of the feathered shaft you just loosed now protrudes from almost the dead centre of the target.
Narsaryn examines the the placement of the arrow in the target for several moments and awards you 255 points for the shot.
Wonder what it takes for dead center. ;)

I just misunderstood one little detail. So I too had to not save my result. Which was:
Your total score for all three targets is 2,168.
256 xp applied to Archery
It could've been better, but my last shot was:
186 You picked a number at random between 1 and 100.
You picked 10 modified by 176 for a total of 186 .
Your arrow streaks across the contest field and plunges into the painted target...
...THWACK!
The end of the feathered shaft you just loosed now protrudes from the lower portion of the inner ring of the target.
Narsaryn examines the the placement of the arrow in the target for several moments and awards you 186 points for the shot.
By the way, how did you guys deal with Mirsurik? I was going to pay him (who cares about 50K gold?)... until I discovered that refusing to pay him and defeating his cohorts earns me 128 general experience. bonus per shot added to "random" is as folows (maybe silver archer charm has effect on random) (did not note wind speed)
might + body + agility + luck/2 (70 if straight 20's) plus archery bonus
archery bonus at lvl 80 134-short , 114-medium , 94-long
at lvl 76 it was 126-short so I exited without save and increased lvl to 80 to get extra bonus

GOLD -50,000 Your money pouch is 50,000 gold tokens lighter...
Mirsurik's eyes again widen when you hand him the gold. He accepts the payment and bows before you.
"Narsaryn has nothing further to worry over," he says. "Her debt is paid. I'll have nothing further to do with her."
You sense that the spellcaster is telling you the truth.
As Mirsurik and his men resume their game of dice, promising to depart from Iron Crown Isle before the sun sets, you turn and head away from the encampment, confident that Narsaryn has nothing further to fear from the mage and his cohorts.
It's the same regardless of whether you directly pay, or first refuse, and then pay.
The end result is the same. And yes, the Charm makes a difference.

I might have paid the debt off myself but Marissa was short by a little less than half the price. Comes from getting Woodsmanship and Thievery up to Eighty, not to mention Telekinesis and Restoration up to seventy. Now I have just four more powers to get to seventy and I definitely will be a master Mage. Think I might hold off on that though. I at least managed to beat my first score in the tournament a few hours ago though. Got 1895. But I'm at least 12K short of getting Archery to eighty. I was two levels shy when I tried to train up. Well since it doesn't appear that my girflriend's going to be joining me this weekend, my curse on her x husband for interfering again, it looks like I'll have plenty of time to see how many times I can beat my best score. I'm aiming for at least one of the top prizes if at all possible, even if it isn't the highest one.

I hope it adds some bonus to ALL archery in the future (ice cave etc) and not just this tournament ; that might be a bit TOO much to wish for but ......

I can confirm that it does, though it is random. But in my last attempt I got two and possibly three bonuses. Pay close attention to the text on the page where you click to pick your number and you'll see it. Let's just say it was quite surprising the time I rolled a 350 and later a 320. My score was a major jump upwards from what it was.

From the Bonus Calculation thread.
The luck bonus is multiplied apparently at random by the charm.
You'll get text like this....
You suddenly feel quite lucky...
How lucky you feel determines the multiplier....
Extremely x 10
Very x 8
Quite x 6
Somewhat x 4
Got one to several (4/5) of different varieties at different ranges for my characters latest runs.

That must have required a hell of a lot of grinding. I'm seriously thinking I may head over to Tarn, as distasteful as I find the idea, to try and get enough XP to get at least Archery to eighty so I can have that two extra points. I want all my major skills, Arcana, Lore and that sort of thing to be at level eighty just in case. That's what I'm ultimately shooting for, that and seventy in every power.

I know the archery bonus is based upon one's level in the skill and range as has been posted before and from noting my own characters data but I'm still wondering about this statement as I get it with all my characters at all ranges regardless of their archery level/bonus.
Your level of mastery in the skill of Archery (76) IS HIGH ENOUGH to provide you with the FULL BONUS against this target.
shadowblack
08-22-2009, 10:49 PM
The full bonus depends on your Archery skill - the higher the skill the higher the bonus. Maybe that's what's confusing you?

I think to get the full bonus for your archery level you need to have a skill level of at least 50 for the 25 yard target. Level 60 for the 50 yard target. Level 70 for the 75 yard target.

------------- Over analayzation alert -------------------
The wording is confusing me. Full is full. Each of my four characters get a different bonus since their skill levels are different. To say they all have the full bonus is not accurate since the full bonus the way I understand it is garnered for level 100.
For example, with the bonuses for stats to get the FULL bonus your stat in the appropriate category normally has to be 20.
IS HIGH ENOUGH to provide you with the FULL BONUS against this target.
Unless I'm missing something for that statement to be accurate under the tourney parameters one would have to have level 100 in archery as those with level 100 have the largest bonus available or the FULL bonus.
This isn't sour grapes as I agree with the set up that skill level should have an impact and it is nice to see the GM throw in the random charm bonus in there to give everyone a fighting chance. Did I just say that it is nice to see randomness in a scenario - I'm definitely confused. ;)
Zeriken
08-23-2009, 12:49 AM
Oldschool is right: the Full bonus isn't really a 'Full bonus'. It is simply a bonus based off of your skill.
It should just say that you get 'a bonus of ...'. The opposite would be a penalty (insofar as not having a good enough archery score is concerned). So, if you do not get a bonus, you get a penalty. One or the other XD.
Full bonus tends to lead one to believe that it is the maximum bonus one can get for that part of the tourney.

Yes and no. Yes, rolled 100 (base). No, almost dead centre.
Wonder what it takes for dead center. ;)

I got luck bonus from the charm on three of my shots last night: two of them were against the first target, the last one was against the last one. I also got some pretty high numbers - but not that high. So I estimate that with enough luck and good numbers you can have a score of over 3000. As far as getting points for archery go to tarn every 3 hours. I'm telling you the points add up real quick. I have over a hundred k in points in archery sitting in my archery bank I could easly move my lvl up to 90 but I'm just wondering if it is worth it for this contest as rolls appear to be really really inconsistant. I mean I've seen people with leser lvls in this contest have a better high score then me. So train at tarn you'll aquire tons of archery points not to mention others. add in the 3 orbs and that training area flies up as far as points are concerned for all skills and powers. Think about it if you do both lvls you get a 128 applied to all powers and skills at the min. so if you do that 4 times a day and get one set of blue orbs and say get 256 min for that your still picking up over 700 points a day for all powers and skills. I just gave you the min. Chances are you won't get the min every time so you'll proably get around a 1000 points a day or better by doing tarn.

Does anyone know which wind is most favorable to the archery tournament?
As to the current scores, I have lost hope in placing in the top 20. It seems that it takes 8+ tries a day to get a decent score. I'm lucky if I sneak in 2 tries a day. Oh well!

I haven't noticed any wind to be honest. Where in the text does it say that? Well last time I beat my best score again. If I keep trying all day today I might be able to inch my way up.

I made my prediction and I'm sticking to it - I also predict that Extremely Lucky will be showing up a LOT more for everyone.
That is the way the GM rolls. He tweaks at the end of these things and the movement up the ladder in the last day is going to be very fast.

You've Picked a Random Number...
400
You picked a number at random between 1 and 100.
You picked 98 modified by 302 for a total of 400 .
Your arrow streaks across the contest field and plunges into the painted target...
...THWACK!
The end of the feathered shaft you just loosed now protrudes from almost the dead centre of the target.
Narsaryn examines the the placement of the arrow in the target for several moments and awards you 400 points for the shot.
MKy best single shot ever. Too bad it won't make a difference...

I should do Archery with Alanne. But I'm playing my new (rely good) non AG character. She has a 20 in Aura, and 18 in Spirit, and the rest are all 19s. 25% bonus to everything except Arcana (but somehow not Magic), which is 30% and it's annoying that her only 30% is Arcana, because she doesn't have that skill, nor will she get it.

On my latest score that put me in fourth place, I got four charms, or maybe five, I don't remember. I just think that the GM felt he had to do something to keep people with lower archery scores interested in the contest. I will admit that the randomness can be frustrating, but if you are 20 archery levels lower, that comes out to what, 360 points total on your score. I think some of it will even out with people with the highest archery scores getting most of the higher scores, but probably not all. It has been a fun contest, if frustrating, at times.

Finally!
When you come in, there's a box that says A Tournament of Bows
An archery tournament is currently underway. All adventurers possessing adequate skill with a bow are encouraged to enter. This contest will only run through 8/28. Select the 'Special battlegrounds events' option below. And the Special battlegrounds events button is red.
Entry:
You learn that an entry fee of five hundred gold is required to participate in the archery tournament.
Narsaryn, the adventurer and master archer who's overseeing the tournament, looks up as you approach and tells you that you must first demonstrate your skill with a bow before you can enter the contest.
"All you have to do is place three arrows into that target just over there," she says, pointing to a target resting against a bundle of hay about fifteen yards to her right.
---
You step forward and promptly loose three arrows at the target. Immediately following your volley, Nasaryn examines the results of your attempt.
She nods and says that the results of your attempt are enough to qualify you for the tournament.
"Now there's just the matter of paying the entry fee," she says. "It's a fee of five hundred gold to enter the contest."
-pay 500-
GOLD -500 Your money pouch is 500 gold tokens lighter...
Nasaryn accepts your payment and tells you that when you're ready you may make your first attempt at launching your arrows against the field of targets.
Side adv.Narsaryn, the adventurer and master archer who's overseeing the tournament, looks up as you approach and frowns.
"Still kicking around?" she asks. "I would have expected you to have already given up."
With your own bow in hand, you accept nine arrows from Narsaryn.
After fielding a routine question from a bow-brandishing adventurer, Narsaryn turns to you and tells you that you can step forward and fire upon the targets whenever you're ready.
You sense that something is weighing heavily on Nasaryn's mind.
*Ask Nasaryn if something is wrong...
*Launch your arrows at the targets...
---
Narsaryn appears taken aback by your question, but quickly nods and takes you aside.
"I've done nothing to win your sympathy, I'm sure," she says, her voice bearing the slightest trace of remorse, "but I'm being followed...and watched."
Immediately intrigued by her admission, you ask her who it is that's following her, and what it is they want.
---
Narsaryn tells you that she cannot relate to you the more sensitive details of the matter, but that it involves the payment of a debt to a powerful spellcaster -- a debt incurred by her father.
"My father's been dead nine years," she says, "and yet this man continues to pursue me for payment on a debt that has swelled with the passing of every season. As the last living among all my kin, I've become his mark..."
You ask Narsaryn for the name of the spellcaster who is apparently pressing her for repayment of the debt.
"Mirsurik," she says, wincing, as if the very mention of the name pains her. "A hundred times a day I imagine sinking one of my arrows into his chest, yet I know that the lingering consequences of that rash action would certainly haunt me. He has followers, mind, and they would, without question, visit revenge upon anyone bold enough to bring harm to their master."
Narsaryn tells you that she hopes to eventually pay off Mirsurik and be done with the whole affair. When you inquire about the amount she supposedly owes the mage, you're astounded by the reply.
"Fifty thousand gold," she says curtly. "A figure quite beyond my situation."
As if guessing at your intentions, perhaps based on your reputation, Narsaryn suddenly tells you that you must not intervene.
"I've told you too much about it already," she says. "If you become involved, you would find yourself a target for the wrath of Mirsurik and his minions. I beg you to forget what I've said and let the matter remains as it stands."
Comply with her wishes and let the matter stand...
Attempt to do something about the matter...
Disregarding Nasaryn's plea, eager to effect an end to the harassment that has so obviously unnerved her, you set off to seek out any sign of the mage known as Mirsurik or his followers.
It takes you less than an hour and only a few inquiries to learn that Mirsurik and three heavily-armed men arrived on Iron Crown Isle just before midday.
With little difficulty, you track down the spellcaster and find him lurking near the crowded encampment on the western edge of the hilltop that is home to Zumryn's keep and the battlegrounds.
Mirsurik proves to be a middle-aged man with long, black hair, garbed in simple traveler's attire. The three men in his company are clad in a mix of leather and chain armour. Each of the three men wears a sword.
As you study the four men from afar, while they sit around a low fire, engaged in a game of dice, you contemplate your next move.
Confront Mirsurik...
Decide against becoming involved...
You boldly approach Mirsurik. Your mind races as you attempt to decide how it is you will deal with the spellcaster.
Attempt to settle Narsaryn's debt with Mirsurik...
At least 50000 gold tokens are required.
Demand that he leave Narsaryn alone...
Your bold demand is met with laughter from the spellcaster's company. The three men at his side rise and draw their weapons. The men glance at Misurik repeatedly, apparently seeking his permission to set themselves upon you.
His permission is granted with a swift nod.
Without hesitation, the three men leap forward and attack, striking out at you with the flat of their blades.
You bravely engage the trio, realizing that you must only attempt to subdue them.

XP +128 You've been awarded a total of 128 Experience...

With his sword-wielding minions lying sprawled out on the ground before you -- severely battered, but still very much alive -- Mirsurik folds his arms and sighs.
"Enough of this," he says, his facial expression betraying the sudden unease he obviously feels in your presence. "You may tell Narsaryn that her debt is...forgiven."
You immediately sense that the spellcaster is telling you the truth.
As his men regain their feet, he orders them to stand at his side. The three men, breathless and bruised from the battle that ended only moments ago, take up their positions and regard you with icy stares.
"Narsaryn no longer owes me anything," says Mirsurik, "but you, my friend, have just placed yourself in my debt. We will meet again. Rest assured of it."
You silently welcome the prospect of again meeting the mage.
With that, he and his men turn and stride off, leaving you alone at the edge of the camp. When they are no longer in sight, you also set off on your way, confident that Narsaryn has nothing further to fear from the mage and his cohorts.
A while later, you run into Narsaryn as she is making her way back toward the archery field, carrying a cloth-covered bundle. At first, when you relate to her your encounter with Mirsurik, she seems put off, apparently upset that you decided to become entangled in the affair.
When she discovers that the mage and his cohorts are not likely to further plague her, you sense a great relief come over her. She thanks you and tells you that it was not her intention for you to take up her fight.
"I've learned to do my own fighting, Alanne," she says, "but I would be outright lying if I told you that the weight of the world didn't just lift from my shoulders. Thank you."
You're about to part ways with Narsaryn when she suddenly takes a small object out of her pocket and hands it to you. You stare down at the circular silver charm now resting in the palm of your hand.
The coin-sized charm is attached to a thin strand of twine. The likeness of a bow has been etched into one side of the silver charm.
ITEM You've acquired: Silver Archer's Charm
* Class: Misc
* Encumbrance: 0
One side of this coin-sized, circular silver charm bears an etching in the likeness of a bow. This charm was given to you by Narsaryn, after you helped rid her of the bothersome Mirsurik. She claimed that the charm had only a small amount of its original power remaining, and that it would bring you luck in the archery tournament being held at Zumryn's battlegrounds.
"It might bring you some luck in the contest," she says. "It's power has weakened over the years, and I fear it may soon be depleted. There should be just enough left to see you through, though."
You thank Narsaryn for the charm and she again thanks you for having dealt with Mirsurik.
"And don't breathe a word of that to anyone, particular Zumryn!" she says. "I don't know that he'd care, of course, but one never knows!"
You bid Narsaryn farewell and she continues on her way to the archery field.
Because of letter limits, I will continue this in my nest post.

Main event: Narsaryn, the adventurer and master archer who's overseeing the tournament, looks up as you approach and smiles.
"How are things, Alanne?" she asks. "Things around here are as busy as ever. I never before realized how many archers there were across this realm!"
With your own bow in hand, you accept nine arrows from Narsaryn.
After fielding a routine question from a bow-brandishing adventurer, Narsaryn turns to you and tells you that you can step forward and fire upon the targets whenever you're ready.
"Good luck to you, Alanne," she says, smiling.
Launch your arrows at the targets...
A small group of your fellow competitors has gathered to watch as you stride up to the line and gaze out across the marked contest field.
Large, painted targets, fastened to tall hay bales, stand (from left to right) at distances of twenty-five, fifty, and seventy-five yards, respectively.
Every time you participate in the contest, you'll fire three arrows at each of the three targets. Your best shot at each target will be used to calculate a final score for your attempt. If your final score beats your previous best, it will become your new score for the tournament. You may launch your arrows at the targets every 2 hours. Good luck!
First target:
Standing at the marked line, with Nasaryn and several fellow competitors watching you closely, you draw your bow and prepare to take your first shot at the first target.
You slowly lower your notched arrow as you take aim at the painted target standing 25 yards distant.

How the heck can you get 8-9 luck bonuses in one attempt? I have managed to do the tourney 22 times and have only managed to get 18 in total!!! One extremely and three very lucky. That's not even an average of one each time. My archery skill is at 85 and my highest score is 2429!

Chareos, I didn't manage it. It was unbelievable luck at the end of a grueling 4-hour session to get that last danged heavy pouch in Fogbough. I think I got extremely lucky 4-5 times. Luck and randomness!

That is my best single shot yet.
And almost every shot (all of them over 224) I've taken in this tourney has hit "almost the dead centre of the target."
Has anyone got 500 out of one shot yet?
It would have to be on the first target, and you'd have to be extremely lucky...
