First of all, a small rant. This is my first character. Great physical stats. I take the highwayman attack quest before going into Hawklor. I get killed 6 times trying those bloody travelers! And the one time I try to run away because I have two hit points left, it say's I feel a little more wicked?!? Because I only wanted to die 6 times?? That makes me wicked??? But I go back and manage to kill them all .. barely. I go into town to try to find one of those safe spots to save at and I get killed in a bar fight before I can. Now I find myself at the very beginnig again with only 12 Death Marks left and I haven't even really started to play yet. Ok, now I am getting angry. I try to get into the forums to ask how death marks works and the registration gives me a hard time because I didn't remember which village I started off in. Well Guess what, I didn't start in any village because I KEPT GETTING KILLED before I could even reach it! But I went back and looked it up so I could ask this one question.
Do you get 20 death marks per character you make up or per account? If it is per account, Then I think I have just lost the last shred of interest I might have had in this game.

You start with 20 Runes of Life of life for ech character. Once you get to a safe spot where you are able to save your game you can buy more Runes of Life for your character with exp. Each Rune cost 16 exp. If you want to buy more just click on the Runes of Life.

One more question. How are you having such a hard time in the startup scenarios? Because, really, the startup scenarios are ridiculously easy. I'm sorry, but dying six times on a start up scenario just means that you either
1)Actually got awful, awful, awful stats or
2)have the most abominable run of bad luck
Even when I was a free player, I never had any hardship playing this game.
edit:just reran the danger on the road startup with the first "acceptable" stats I got:
Melee Rating (javascript:void(0)) [? (javascript:void(0))] 26 / 29 Superhuman Stamina Points (javascript:void(0)) [? (javascript:void(0))] 27 / 29 Incredible Might (javascript:void(0)) [? (javascript:void(0))] 7 Below Avg Agility (javascript:void(0)) [? (javascript:void(0))] 18 Amazing Body (javascript:void(0)) [? (javascript:void(0))] 13 Above Avg Mind (javascript:void(0)) [? (javascript:void(0))] 16 Exceptional Spirit (javascript:void(0)) [? (javascript:void(0))] 15 Exceptional Aura (javascript:void(0)) [? (javascript:void(0))] 9 Average Luck (javascript:void(0)) [? (javascript:void(0))] 20 Superhuman Avg. Stat: 14 Melee Rating: 29 Stamina Pts: 29 Recommendation: ACCEPT STATS
Despite how awful these stats are (You can't even use magic with them), I defeated danger on the road with my first try.

Also unless things have changed you start out in Hawklor notwithstanding the optional start-up scenarios.
Welcome to the Forum TimothyPine and hang in there.
Also don't overlook the hints/tips thread on here or the wiki particularly the start-up guides. Just be advised the wiki and the forum to a lesser degree have some spoiler potential.
One last thing it's better to keep a few Runes of Life on hand (I normally keep at least 5 per character) than getting a Mark of Death since the RoL's are cheaper. Also sometimes a RoL isn't used when your character dies - it remains intact.

(man, I take a long time to type. There were no responses when I started.)
First, there are two things. (1) Welcome to the board!
(2) There are Runes of Life (which every character starts with 20) and Marks of death (which you don't want to get). At this point, I would suggest hitting restart character. That will allow you to get the runes back (without forfeiting your 19s and 20s), but you will have to reselect your power. I suggest getting Restroation. And then I would suggest doing The Wandering Undead because If you give back the gem that the rotting thing gives you, you get Necromancy for free
Runes cost 16 XP to get, and Marks cost 32 XP to remove.
How to tell a SAFE spot. In the top of the screen, there is a number that has a plus sign on each side. In a SAFE spot, the pluses change to flags that read SAFE. Example (not safe) +1+
(safe [it's really side-by-side]) SAFE2SAFE.
So, to answer your question, it's 20 runes per character.

You start out in Hawklor notwithstanding the optional start-up scenarios which you mention. Which actually brings up an interesting point.

Not sure how I kept loosing then Zmflavius except I couldn't seem to roll over a 7. My physical stats were all 18 or higher and I had 15 points in weapon. I was using a short sword. I had all my weapons and padded armor equiped. But every time I retried it, I just kept doing worse and worse.
And thank you OldSchool, Thingirl, and Smv. You answered my questions and more. Even though I was far to grumpy when I posted.

Ah... and therein lies the problem. You must have either
1)A really bad luck score.
2)Really bad luck in real life.
If it's one, I suggest you create a new character with 16+ in ALL stats. If it's two, go pick some clovers.
edit: so glimmering warblade really isn't available to free players anymore?

Welcome to the game TimothyPine!
And I'd suggest you do a restart on your character (it's the first screen you get after picking the character off your list)
That will erase all your lost marks of life, and give you a totally fresh start with your character. (don't delete the character, just restart him)
And as thingirl mentioned - I'd seriously consider doing the wandering undead startup scenario - it gives you the best reward in the long term.

Why are you using a short sword? Did you start with a premade character?
I started a non-AG (not premade) character in my empty slot to check, and you should be starting with Knight's Warsword (an exceptional weapon) and the Jade Battle Amulet. With those and good stats your starting MR should be 38 and SP about 42.

Actually, it seems that we "freebies" now start out with padded gear and a short sword. I say "now" because we used to start out with the Warsword and Amulet, but, well, I guess it got scrapped.
You have no idea how disappointed it made me :(

Huh, you're right. A non-AG character on my AG account still gets the Warsword and Amulet, but I created a free account to test with and it was a short sword. That's lousy.
And under those circumstances, the bandit leader is purple. Ouch. I tried the Wandering Undead, and it's tough, too. A blue, a grey, and then a purple.

You can run from the first encounter and still continue the scenario, but not the second...I think.
Regardless of which, though, rolling for as high an MR (and possibly SP) score as possible is a very good idea, especially for us freebies.

I played freebee until I started getting locked out of the game because the server was busy.
I went AG and have never regretted it.

I never had this problem. I started AG, and am really glad I did. Since probably more than half the game content is for AG only, plus the bonuses for starting AG, it was well worth it.
