View Full Version : What's in a name

Oldschool

Well I couldn't just stop at "Post your beginning stats" and since I liked this thread on the old forum - what's the "story" behind your forum name and/or character name(s).

My forum handle comes from my preference for "oldschool" (1st edition) Dungeons and Dragons and a few other things now considered "oldschool" particularly some of my musical preferences (note my tag tendencies).

Hawk (my main) and Voltan come from the movie "Hawk the Slayer".

Esoteric and Virago are wordplay. Esoteric, understood or belonging to the select few, is so named because all his bonuses are 30 percent. Virago was named keeping the traditional definition in mind; a strong, brave and warlike woman.

Yeah, I like this thread idea.

John Ardin's name history is long, and a bit of a doozy, so if you're curious, let me know. Otherwise, I'll just leave it at that.

Maskull
07-18-2009, 11:36 AM
Maskull was the protagonist in the book Voyage to Arcturus by David Lindsay, one of the best and most unusual fantasy novels I've ever read. All the names in the story are linguistic blends, or portmanteaus, usually of two or more distinctive words. (The word 'portmanteau', by the way, first appeared in print in Lewis Carroll's book Through the Looking Glass. The poem Jabberwocky is full of them.) So, in that sense, the names are like neologisms, but are unique to Lindsay's book. A couple of examples are Joywind and Oceaxe.

I'm lame. Alanne just sounded good, and thingirl is based off of dad's/my Sryth account thinman. Dad made that name up when he was 13ish. Reha, my other character, is a misspelling of the name of one of my friends.

I don't think your names are lame, thingirl. I actually think your username is clever considering the situation, and "Alanne" is a fine name.

Did I ever reply to this on the old forum? Well regardless, I don't suppose anyone wants to necrothread it even if I did (I know I sure don't) so I'll just post here.

Jhamlin is the name of my very first character. I made the name up when I first started playing TES III: Morrowind, and I've basically been using it as my character name for..everything ever since. I have no idea where the inspiration came from, but I remember wanting to make something unique since my dad is generally pretty good at making up weird/quirky names.
I decided to Google it one day, actually, to see if maybe I had seen it somewhere and subliminally ripped it off. While I did find the name, it turned out to just be some guy with a first name starting with the letter 'J' and the last name of Hamlin who had decided to combine them and make it his myspace name.

Ehrmlyn, on the other hand, is a complete mystery -- even to myself. I can only assume that I was having a tough time thinking of a name (Erm..), and then decided I wanted to throw an 'H' in there 'cause of Jhamlin, and then to keep the names sounding sort of similar I stuck -lyn on there. I didn't want to completely rip it off so I made the 'I' into a 'Y'. Keep in mind this is all speculation, and perhaps a deeper look than you cared for into how hazardous the track on which my train-of-thought runs is.

As for my forum name, well, I don't know. The 'Matt' part makes sense because my name is Matthew. I'm a guy so I guess that's where the 'man' part comes into play. And the '20' might actually make some sense in about..three years.

Lightwielder, after my outpouring of useless information, feel free to share the story of your character name. It can't be much longer than this (;)), and probably immensely more intriguing

Ooops with my limited playing time and nice flow of new content of late I haven't been playing my non AG characters and overlooked them. Also both of these are wordplay names.

Quincunx is number five and is a geometric pattern like the five pips on a die.

Senary is character number six and pertains to that number.

Chareos
07-19-2009, 12:37 PM
Chareos is a character from a David Gemmell book, 'Quest for lost heroes'. Gemmell is my favourite author of heroic fantasy and I can thoroughly recommend his works.

Connovar and Bane are also characters of his. Connovar is one of my favourite characters from the books, (Sword in the storm). Unfortunately, he was my first character and I played him before discovering the forum and later the wiki. As such I made so many mistakes with him, i.e. settling on his first rolls and messing up quests that I deleted him to start Chareos.

There is now a new Connovar, however due to time available for playing I have not spent much time on him.

That which we call a ro--

Oh.

Oh, dear. Where to start...

"Well, I'd say ye oughta wag about yer first 'andle an' go from there. Y'know, that two-word thin'-whatever-it-is."

Charity? Coming from you? Could the apocalypse be far? Or the Father--

"Hsst! Speak o' that name an' ye'll be strung up by yer own guts, ye bloody-brained fool! Stayin' with ye, I donna know how I'm still breathin', what with all them stupid stuff ye be pullin'."

Call it "Author's Immunity" or something similarly cheesy. Anyway, I've a post to make, and d'you want me to mention Rytel while I'm at it?

"What ye be waggin' about?"

Never mind.

Well, uh, I mentioned earlier that my handle on the old forums was "Glück Stern", which Babelfish horked out when I plugged in "Lucky Star". The "Lucky Star" part was because it was the anime I was watching--and was interested in--when I made the account. Yes, I watch anime...occasionally, and the number of shows I've watched can be counted on one hand, so don't lynch me or anything.

Fast-forward, and here I am as Lugwy. It's one of my earlier handles, and it's the one I used when I played StarCraft--"used" because I don't play it anymore--and one of the more uninspired nicknames I use when playing the earlier Pokémon games. So--much--concentrated--shame--ow, ow, ow! Okay; I'll stop.

In-game, though...well...

Hey, you want to come out and do the exposition?

"Yer the skag wieldin' the ink. Wag it yerself."

Not even for cookies? No? How about, er...pie? Burgers? A bigger sword?--No, I'm not saying you're compensating for anything; not at all--A sharper dagger? Come on; be a peach.

"Ye donna get me hint? I'll spell it out fer ye. Jus' wag about the name, not the history, or ye'll be talkin' 'til them skags drop dead, an' I be wantin' ta cut off yer tongue. Anythin' else ye be wantin' me ta beat ye o'er the brains about?"

Alright, alright; I'll leave you in peace.

"Lua" was simply made up on the spot when I was making an RP character for another forum I had participated in. At that time, I didn't know that it was also a programming language (http://www.lua.org/), and when I found out, the name had stuck. :(

So, yeah. That's what's in a name...

...Aside from a cloak of letters thrown on a man. It means nothing! Oh, wait; wrong question. Dagnabit.

"Yer funny sometimes, ye know that?"

Stow it.

I've been to many places where simply mentioning liking anime gets scathing looks--and comments--in return, so I tend towards mocking my own habits.

Then again, it didn't prevent me from having Ryusei Date (from Super Robot Wars/Super Robot Taisen) as my avatar...

spencer
07-22-2009, 04:49 PM
Spencer Lionking was my first A D & D name from many, many years ago. He was character who lasted about 0.456 adventures and died miserably after getting poisoned by spiders in the Village of Hommlet module. Since I did not get to play him very long there, I chose his name here, as I have in other games as well.

As to where it originated, I do like trying to decipher Spenser's The Faerie Queene, or I did at one time, so I chose the first part from Spenser's name.

As to Lionking, I will just note that I came up with it before Disney did.

Think about them, should be self evident.

Ok, for those not as quick on the uptake (due to too many hours online).

I was starting out a new game some few years back....ahem many years back. I was in the character creation page trying to think up a name when my brother came in and asked what I was doing - I replied just fooling around...Jesphulin Aroun became my standard character for many games to come. Kid N'roun came about a few years later.

Yes, sorry I'm late.

From my very first game, (Pokemon: Blue Version) John has always been my preferred game name. (Though it's not my real name.) When I started getting into Roleplaying games, I decided it was time to make a last name. Just because it sounded cool, I decided "John Pyro." I played through a lot of Roleplaying (Including D&D sometimes.) as John Pyro.

Later, as I got older, I decided I wanted a more realistic sounding name. Flipping through name idea after name idea in my head, I eventually settled on John Arden. Well, after playing a few games as John Arden, I started another game. It was a PC game called Neverwinter Nights 2, but it wasn't until I was quite sometime through the game that I realized that I spelled it wrong. I spelled it "John Ardin." When I compared the two names, I decided that I liked John Ardin, instead. (A mistake that worked)

There you go. Lightwielder is actually just a name I conjured up as a Sryth username.

Zeriken
07-31-2009, 03:33 AM
Hmm, Zerikal was chosen because I had a free account name already with the Zeriken nick, and I didn't want to wait for whoever knew how long to log into the account (the server was full). Though I don't mind it too much.

Zeriken is from an RP site. The characters background was slightly oriental, though custom worlds were allowed so I was able to twist and tweak his background to my exact specifications. Regardless, I like 'z's and 'k's in my names, and this name naturally came from it.

A character name I had adopted before this, while speaking of character names, was R'ok. Originally, I had chosen this name because of a dragon from some game I can't remember. His name was Arohk, though I didn't want it to sound like a complete rip (Shame face) and changed the writing a bit. I later found out that the name conveniently transformed into Ragnarok. You see, when there is an apostrophe in the middle of somebody's name, that means that there are letters that are unpronounced when speaking it (it can shorten a relatively long name). I thought that was kind of neat XD.

Btw, I met all my roommates online, at said rp site. They all call me R'ok XD. (Also, I *love* anime. I note that thingirl watches Naruto. Thumbs-up!)

thingirl

Hi Zeriken. (I don't really mean this) "Thumbs-up!" isn't the correct greeting to a fellow Naruto watcher. The correct greeting is "Thumbs-Up! (Ding!)". Like the way Lee and Guy do it. (Done play bashing). It seams like you might enjoy the "I wish I was Animated (http://www.srythforum.com/group.php?groupid=15)" social group that I made. There's even a thread on Naruto.

SiannaDey
08-06-2009, 01:40 AM
many years ago Sianna was a character that was an Alchemist. At the time...Psionics were powerful...and this character rolled an unbelievable result....Just shy of the maximum for a normal human. She was able to defeat many stronger opponents with her mind powers. With her mastery of Alchemy...she mastered all sorts of abilities such as regeneration, turning objects to other forms....making herself immune to and an instrument of deadly natures, summoning or creating elementals....later she became a priestess...and eventually the title of Dey in her duties to the Sultana of the realm.

In Sryth I consider the power of Destruction to be her Psionics.
When she heals stamina after each battle...it is her alchemy
Divination and Restoration are her Priestess powers.
Unarmed Combat is her Alchemy turning her body into flaming stone or diamond forms as a living weapon.
Necromancy is her combined powers of a priestess over undead and the use of alchemical potions of life/death.
Most of her skills can be attributed to any of the arcane potions and the control of elements/elementals at the higher levels of a Master Alchemist.

She was an outsider in the realms of the Sultans...and I imagine this to be one of her mysterious travels beyond those realms to gather rare ingrediants, find info, research hidden mysteries and to establish diplomatic ties as an emmissary of the Sultana

:D

Flavius is a second-declension noun in Latin (in addition to being a name). As such, the genitive singular (singular possessive) and nominative plural (plural form) are both Flavii.

jimyred came back from high school, a friend wore one of those Tommy Hillbilly shirts, and and somehow I got called Jimmy Redneck because we hung out together (and because I was a bit of a redneck . . .)
Chuck comes from my propensity to just use random but common monosyllable names when I need something (my dogs are Jack and Jill), and Fred was actually his alias when he went to Saarngard, so I named my second character after that (Of course Fred was called Chuck at Saarngard).

Dranikos

Funny enough there's no real story to "Dranikos" (the name of pretty much ANYTHING I do online, so far I've seen maybe 3 others use it...). I used it for one of my earlier D&D Characters (Human Paladin, less "Zealot" and more "Warrior Philosopher" type.), I played him for so long that the name just kinda became a part of me. I use if for my Email, any 1 player RPG I play, D&D (not just paladins, but invariably good aligned), and even online RPGs.
I almost can't imagine what I'd do if I had to create another, It's hard to top the history in nearly a decade of use (seeing as I'm 24, was 15 when I first used it... 9 years, 1 name, it really is part of me...)

I even use it as my counterpart when I'm having an internal debate about something. (Less talking to myself, more thinking through an action via internal dialogue, and as always invariably the moral high ground.) I'd almost venture to say that if you were to split me into my fundamental "Good" and "Evil" sides, Dranikos would be the "Good" side, I'd be Evil (or at least Neutral...)

I used to play AD&D 25 years ago. I used the name Erelas for one of my all time favorite characters. I think I pulled the name out of a Tolkien reference guide. I played as a Ranger then. Many years later, I got hooked on Everquest and created a Ranger again named Erelas Trueflight. I immensely enjoyed EQ for 3+ years and needed to stop playing as the time commitment got out of hand.

Sryth gives me my taste of D&D and it brings back fond memories of my childhood. Erelas is, once again, reborn.

Indeed, Tolkien's level of world building is astounding... (not surprising, as he started on it when he was still an undergraduate, and worked himself to death on it...) Middle Earth is, and probably always shall be, the best fleshed out fantasy world. (though nearly 50 years of effort will accomplish that)

And ditto on the Welcome.

My screen name is short for Texas Lawyer 1992 (the year I was licensed), and I've never used a different one. I prefer names for characters based on other fantasy characters, thus my characters tend to be named either after Greek mythology (Hercules), Arthurian legend (Lancelot, Merlin), or LOTR (Gandalf, Bilbo). I once had an Elven character which I named Jetacleal Alcazar, but otherwise I've stuck with one-word names.
