For anything to do with music.
A couple recent posts in "The Repping Room" thread got me thinking about cover songs.
Betcha they don't teach this at Juilliard or any other Classical schools. ;)

The big talk in NZ is the upcoming concerts from AC/DC.
I forget how many truck/ trailer loads of gear they're going to cart around with them, but it's a heck of a lot.
Auckland concert sold out in 5 hours. Wellington concert sold out in 6 hours.
Second Wellington concert has been organised... also sold out.
My brother was volunteered to get 3 tickets online for the Auckland concert.
He managed to get 2 tickets... for the second Wellington concert.
He's going... his partner is going... where does that leave me in the equation?
At home throwing darts at a photo of my brother!

I've already alluded to the fact that AC/DC is playing a concert in my hometown in the near future.
Auckland is also hosting Pearl Jam, Nickelback and Greenday.
I want to focus this post on Greenday... actually, I don't, I want to focus on a band that has never found wide popularity in New Zealand for the simple fact that they've never toured here: Weezer.
We know Weezer through songs like "Beverly Hills", which I don't rate that highly... but the marketing gurus did a fine job of brainwashing the listening public by releasing the video and shooting it at the Playboy mansion.
What guy in his right mind wouldn't watch that, eh?
Greenday is the big band of the day, and their concert has sold out. I'm not a fan of Greenday. I don't mind their music, but I don't mind it in the same way that I don't mind a toothache... I'll deal with the toothache through a visit to the dentist. In the meantime, I wish it would go away.
What bugs me about Greenday is their propensity to write really catchy songs that have a political agenda (I expect recriminations on that remark).
I bought the Weezer album, "Make Believe" because a friend recommended it. I wasn't impressed, mainly because the song I wanted to hear wasn't on it.
I discovered the album I should have bought was "The Red Album", which I loved.
I loved it so much that I promptly Googled Weezer and read a few reviews of other albums. From there, I bought "The Green Album", and was instantly hooked.
Now... I have this habit; when I hear something I like, I thrash it!
My music listening at the moment involves large doses of Weezer. Of that band, I can only say that Rivers Cuomo (the brains behind the outfit) is one of those rare talents who can capture an audience with his music; it's catchy, clever, and foot-stomping yahoo!
More, he doesn't try to be pretentious... he writes great music, then puts lyrics to them that are identifiable... words that encompass feelings, happenings, inconsequential stuff... but we "get it".
We "get it" at a personal level.
Listen to the song, "Simple Pages" from the Green Album... if that doesn't make you think Greenday took lessons from Weezer, I don't know what to say.
That's just a Badstench point of view.

Well for me the next live show that I will be going to see is Doro on 9/6. They are a metal band from Germany. Doro Pesch is the lead singer and as you may guess by the name the founder of the band. She was also in an other metal band by the name of Warlock. She has been in the metal seen since 1984. If you want to read a little more about her and the band I have added her website.

Nice SMV, :) now where's that "green with envy" emoticon. ;)
One of the few female headbangers from "back in the day". Very hot - looks and pipes. Extremely underrated then and now.
Warlock (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmnVNxEmBn4)
Sign of the times - the guys had bigger hair than the girls. :)
Wonder if she's an rp'er as she seems to have a Warrior Soul (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcwGvV36IuY&feature=related).
And her songs with Lemmy of Motorhead, talk about an odd looking "couple" - lol.

There's a radio station in New Zealand that has the dubious reputation for being the most highly rated station in the country. It follows a formula originally pursued by an American station that utilised the talents of the likes of Howard Stern.
"Shock Jocks", they are called, and the premise is to grab a small percentage of the listening audience, but make them loyal listeners. Until then, radio stations had an approach of trying to please everybody some of the time.
It was an enterprising idea-man who realised you can't do that successfully. What you have to do is find the audience you can please ALL of the time; polarise radio listeners into choosing which station they prefer and let them adjust the tuning knob accordingly.
Why did this work for some particular radio stations and not for others? The answer to this lies with demographics and the lifestyles pursued by individuals at various ages, suffice it to say that young people (teenagers) have been identified as being a specific target market.
Oddly, the second most sought after audience is the "retired" age group.
This isn't so hard to understand when you understand that radio has two main tricks to capture an audience; they utilize music and conversation.
Teenagers zero in on the music, oldies like the conversation, the exchange of ideas. Everyone in the middle is too busy raising families and working jobs to pay the regular attention required by the ratings agencies.
"You can't please everybody all of the time".
Hmmm... so, I'm a guy who listens to a radio station that plays music I like, and I'm way outside their normal demographic.
But then, I'm not normal for someone my age. You could call me immature; I prefer youthful. The fact is, however I categorize myself, the truth is made evident by your choice of music.
Which brings me back to the reason I started this post...
The radios station I listen to is called "The Rock". They have a website which streams online continually, so if you want to, I'm sure you can find them and listen too!
Anyway, they do an annual thing where they ask listeners to vote for the top 1000 rock songs of all time. You can choose 10 songs; they are collated against all the other respondents to come up with a final list.
I submitted my choices the other day, and was suddenly made aware that Time is a pulpable thing; that age shows, despite how you act and feel and think, through such things as favourite songs.
Regardless, the songs I chose are 'contenders'.... not all of them are my favourites or from my favourite bands; they are just damned good songs that shaped an age and changed a mindset. The fact remains, though, they are mostly from a specific time period that lies before the time of 'The Rock's' demographic target.
I can live with my choices.

My back is going to hate me tomorrow, but I guess concerts will be good for my posture (I'm very short, have to look way up to see over people's heads.) i don't just play Sryth.
I am currently pursuing my need to outfit my music collection.
In Auckland, there's a store called "Real Groovy", which purports to having anything and everything you could ever hope to find (music wise).
So, I made a list of CD's I really wanted and went shopping.
That was a sad experience, because I picked up 3 recordings on my list and 7 that were just required to make up my spending allowance.
What did I buy?
1) The Slider (T. Rex)
2) Live Killers (Queen)
3) Sheik Yerbouti (Frank Zappa)
4) Discipline (King Crimson)
5) Animals (Pink Floyd)
6) Woke Up With A Monster (Cheap Trick)
7) Burn (Deep Purple)
8) Alien Love Secrets (Steve Vai)
9) It's Only Rock'n'Roll (Rolling Stones)
10) Scream Dream (Ted Nugent)
So... what were the 3 recordings on my original list?
Anyone want to hazard a guess?
This poser will close in two days, the closest will earn a rep.
Here are a few clues
a) one of the artists had a girlfriend named Gloria Jones.
b) One of the albums contained a song called "Thela Hun Ginjeet"
c) the third featured a drummer whose name was Bun E. Carlos
You could probably arrive at the answers by Google.... go for it!

Take a look at this list:
1. I
2. II
3. III
4. IV
5. Houses of The Holy
6. The Song Remains The Same
7. Physical Graffiti
8. Presence
9. In Through The Out Door
10. Coda
It is, of course, a list of the ten Led Zeppelin albums. Led Zeppelin is my favourite band. If I was shot into outer space on a journey that would last many years and was offered the chance to take the music of just one band with me, I’d take Led Zeppelin.
Now… of the ten listed recordings, I have a definite order of favouritism. What I want you to do is work out (from the following 6 statements) what that order is. Position no.1 reflects my most favoured recording through to no.10, my least favoured recording.
In effect, this is a logic problem. Anyone who is good at puzzles should be able to work it out, but there is a definite advantage if you know a little bit about Led Zeppelin’s music.
Once you think you have the correct order, PM the answer to me. First correct earns him/ herself the obligatory rep as congratulations.
And when I’ve announced the winner, only then should you make comments on how and why you arrived at your decision.
Good luck!
~~~~~~~~~~
Statement 1: Of the four numbered recordings, none holds a position equivalent to its number, nor does any hold a position adjacent to another.
Statement 2: Of all the recordings, two were originally released as double albums. These hold the top two positions.
Statement 3: In Through The Out Door, which is positioned next to led Zeppelin II, is not as favoured as Houses of The Holy, which it also lies next to.
Statement 4: Coda does not hold position 4.
Statement 5: The song, “Stairway To Heaven”, appears on two of the albums. These albums are adjacent to each other.
Statement 6: The four numbered albums are reversed in order of appearance on my list.
From the "7 Questions" thread,
haha... Oldschool... I'm a child of "guitar-driven" sounds from the 70's, so i'm wondering which bands the GM actually refers to.
For me, the 80's was punctuated by make-up wearing New Romantics and 'Big hair' rock stars in the vein of Bon Jovi and Def Leppard.
I'm more the Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath set.
But I don't want this thread to get hijacked by people mentioning their fave bands. Such talk is better suited to 'The Concert Hall'.
Gotta say I'm on both sides of the fence so to speak. Although I don't pigeonhole my musical selection to any one genre enjoying everything from Bluegrass to OldSkool Rap and nearly everything else I'm particularly fond of 70's rock/metal and 80's rock, especially metal whether thrash, hair, etc.
As it seems we have similarly minded connoisseurs on here and more than our fair share of 70's/80's "children" I'd thought I'd pass these along.
Badstench
09-23-2009, 04:47 AM
The correct answer is in.
I'm going to post the answer in spoiler tabs in case anyone else wants to try their skills.
1: Physical Graffiti
2: The Song Remains The Same
3: Led Zeppelin IV
4: Presence
5: Led Zeppelin III
6: Houses of The Holy
7: In Through The Out Door
8: Led Zeppeling II
9: Coda
10: Led Zeppelin I
The correct answer (from Psychoadept) was the third answer received.
Judging from the other two, the updated version of statement 3 caused some confusion. However, I re-read the statement to see if it was ambiguous. Given the placement of the commas, no it isn't.
If the whole statement is rearranged, it says that In Through The Out Door is positioned between Houses of The Holy and Led Zeppelin II.
I think I THINK that by that logic, there were still 2 correct answers. Before there were 4. Expect to see a long PM about how I came to this conclusion.
I would also like to see Psycoadept's logic.
EDIT: I feel stupid. I was thinking late at night, which I should know (having lost 6 points [out of 20] on a math test that I took after 9PM) is a bad thing. Still, before he edited it, there were 4 correct answers.
Badstench
09-23-2009, 05:41 PM
Nope... there were only 2.
The first three albums could be easily discovered by statements 2 & 5.
this places Led Zeppelin IV in position 3.
If the other numbered albums cannot be adjacent to each other, there are 4 combinations how they can fit.
However, even with the original phrasing of statement 3, we know that In Through the Out Door and Houses of The Holy lie adjacent to each other. That knocks statement 1 down to 3 posssible combinations.
here's where the 'invisible' statement comes into effect, because a blatant hint was given in the introduction to the puzzle which stated, "Led Zeppelin is my favourite band", and this was followed by, "there is a definite advantage if you know a little bit about Led Zeppelin’s music".
and to which you, thingirl, answered:
I'm too young to know who Led Zeppelin even is. Is google OK?
Googling is okay by me, but in this case, it wouldn't help.
All of the albums except Coda were created as studio releases, each containing original material. Coda was released after the drummer, John Bonham, died. It is compilation of previously unreleased material.
Now, anyone who professes to be a Led Zep fan would know this and never, ever, place Coda above Houses of The Holy or In Through The Out Door... if you can find one, I'll eat my shorts :eek:
That knocks the 'probable' combinations of statement 1 down to 2.
Adding the reference to Led Zeppelin II gave away exactly where the correct order of everything else went.
thingirl
09-23-2009, 07:51 PM
OK, so there was an advantage to that. However, without that knowledge about Coda, and before the edit, there are 4 "correct" answers. My reasoning:
After the 3rd slot (IV) could be either Presence or Houses of The Holy and In Through The Out Door.
After that would be III, then either Coda or the possibility you didn't chose.
Then II, then the remaining titled album, then I.
So, the order could be:
... Presence, III, Houses, Door, II, Coda, I
Or:
... Presence, III, Coda, II, Houses, Door, I
Or:
... Houses, Door, III, Presence, II, Coda, I
Or even (And this makes 4):
... Houses, Door, III, Coda, II, Presence, I
Badstench
09-23-2009, 08:51 PM
Correct... however, I have addressed your option 2 and the reason why. this makes it obsolete and not a factor. Logic prioblems are not decided on one statement alone... you have to take all the clues together, which your option 2 doesn't.
I'm sure you could argue any way you like, but as you already pointed out, you don't know anything about the music, so it would be quite okay to admit when you're out of your depth and might, just conceivably, be wrong! :p
*blinks* Oh, cool. I figured somebody would have beat me to it. But I'm also the beneficiary of the revision of statement 3, I think.
As for my logic, it was mostly visual. I copy-and-pasted the list into notepad, then just went through the statements, rearranging things. I had to google 2 and 5, though, because I am not as much of a Led Zeppelin fan as Badstench.
Thanks for the reps!
29 years! and as I sit here listening/ watching the youtube movie kindly offered from oldschool, I minus 29 from my current age and think....
Holy shit!
Because I was sitting on the bus the other day, and i saw a girl/ woman get on. I noticed her in particular because she had unusual features.
(No Varsil, she didn't have or three eyes or an extra arm. She had features I'd associate with american indians, and she wasn't scary looking, though she might have been bonkers... in fact, she probably was bonkers, because she.... wait... just read the damn story!)
I overheard this woman/ girl ask the bus driver if this bus would take her to Campbell Road. In true bus-driver fashion, the driver mumbled something that could have been scottish and pointed to an empty seat, meaning "yep".
I paid attention because I get off at the same bus stop that is required for the getting off if you want Campbell Road.
Now... Campbell road is a very long road, and where we got off is the start of that road. I live on a road that shoots off Campbell road, so I felt comfortable in my knowledge when I got off my seat to disembark. The bus driver had forgotten about the woman, so I told her to get off the bus with me...
This started a conversation that queried and answered where campbell Road was. She nodded her thanks and started to walk away, which is when I coughed and offered her an alternative: if she wanted to wait with me, I was going to catch a transfer bus that would get her half way to her final destinantion.
She shrugged and said "okay".... and then we met each other. Her name was Gloria and she was from Venezuela (see Varsil? I was right, you donkey!) She was also a bit of a hottie.
The transfer bus arrived, we got on, then got off ten minutes later as close to her destination as possible.
take note of the following, because it might get confusing otherwise...
She was headed for Te Kawa Road. The bus had dropped us off on Tawa Road. Opposite my house is a road called Kawau Road. Can you see where this is going?
Anyway, we got off the bus and then had a ten minute walk to where I was sure Te Kawa Road was, but when we got there, I saw the road sign said "Kawau Road".
I felt like such a dick-head! I was standing there, dithering over why the street sign was proclaiming itself to be wrong, and wondering how the heck I was going to extricate myself from this awkward position with the Venezuelan hottie, when I heard footsteps behind us.
The footsteps belonged to the footfalls of a girl dressed in a school uniform, and because I'm a genius, I figured she must be a schoolgirl. :rolleyes:
I asked her if she knew where Te Kawa Road was. She looked perplexed for a second, then pointed a bit further down the road we were on, which was the road I live on.
Turns out Te Kawa road was the next intersection, not the one I had led the Venezuelan hottie to.
Problem solved, we all went on our merry way!
Except...
ten minutes later, there was a knock on my door, and when I opened it, who should be standing there but the Venezuelan hottie! She was looking very downcast as she explained that she actually wanted Kawera Road, and did I know where that was!
I didn't, but I invited her inside while I looked it up on Googlemaps, and this is where the story starts to sound like the pre-cursor to a penthouse forum letter. Unfortunately, it isn't!
My house-mate (a woman) was also at home, so everything was above board and quite innocent thank-you-very-much!
We discovered that Kawera Road was way back where the transfer bus had deposited us, so we all had a little laugh, then she gave me a come hither look and led me to the bedroom for.... wait... that was my fantasy... sorry... so we all had a little laugh, then she left!
After she left, I smacked myself on the forehead for not offering her a ride to her final destination.... and for not asking her if she'd like to go out sometime (like, on a date).
One of the things my house-mates love about me is that I always have these interesting bus stories. I wonder if they're truly interesting, or whether I make weird things happen through my own actions. Regardless, I am not boring!
Picked up a CD by an Australian band called The Cruel Sea, album - Three Legged Dog - Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours", and The Foo Fighters, "In Your Honor".
Total cost, NZ$24 (US$17.25). A good purchase, I think.
About the Church. Yes, I suppose it is denominational. I'm "non-denotational", meaning that there isn't any one person somewhere, like, say, in Rome, making the decision about what is preached and how the bible is interpreted.
So, when someone like me moves cities, they need to find a new church. And placing your membership is basically saying "We believe what you believe and we want to stay at this church for a long time."
So, placing your membership is a special thing, and doing it on your daughter's B-day makes it extra special.
this is a 'reppable" (is that a word?) question.
It's a logic problem that Googling won't help you with.
ALL correct answers will receive a rep.
Statement 1) This guy was a spectacular high school failure; skinny and hairy, he had a big nose and wore funny clothes.
Statement 2) His first album was such a dismal failure, he straight away started recording an album of 'Doo-Wop' songs to gain some credibility.
Statement 3) He already had his own recording studio when a collaboration with another artist finally afforded him some credibility.
Statement 4) He lived in California
Statement 5) His first 'big' hit came about through an instrumental piece entitled.... no, that would be Googlifiable.
Statement 6) His daughter reinforced the 'valley' concept, which he masterminded.
Statement 7) the previous statement is a big clue.
Again, please refrain from answering directly to the thread... use spoiler tabs if you absolutely must, but once the coirrect answer appears here, all reps will be null and void.
Last clue: If Badstench was shot into outer space and denied Led Zeppelin as his music of choice, this guy would be second!
Their was only one clue which could have given a successful googling, but even this was presented "decptively".
No disrespect to oldschool (for all I know it could have been a clever ploy to prevent anyone else being repped :rolleyes:), but his 'extra' clue did away with the deception and made googling the successful answer a surety.
This is the next conundrum.
I want the title of the song.
I will give clues, one each day until someone gives me the title.
To be fair, I will state that the song first appeared in the 70's, but it remains a classic that shaped the music industry.
The album was a number 1 hit, but the song wasn't
Furthermore, the lyrics I present may not be in order; to say the first line would be to give it away, and the chorus would definitely do the same.
No Googling allowed until clue 5.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Clue One: September 30:
"Don't you hear my heart? You got it drowning out the radio."
Clue Two: October 1:
"Though it's cold and lonely in the deep, dark night".
Clue Three: October 2:
"Stop right there! Before you go any further, do you love me?"

3) Bun E. Carlos (Cheap trick)

Ah, I comprende now: "kare" is a Maori word. It has various meanings depending on the situation in which it is used, but it is most common as a term of endearment toward a friend.
It can be used loosely, as in: "kia ora, kare", which translates to "Gidday, mate", or more formally.
The word, kare, can also mean "to yearn for", or "to desire greatly".
When written as "kare kare", the above meanings are amplified. It could mean something like, "To my dearest friend, I miss you", or something like, "My closest friends instill my most cherished memories".

Last night I saw KISS live. This was the first time I have ever seen them live. I have been a long time fan of them and seeing them live was a true dream come true. The show was just great. I am still in awe that I actually saw them.
I saw KISS in 1981... it was an uncovered outdoor stadium in Wellington, back in the days when bands were first packing stadiums.
The show was, as smv1973 noted, 'just great'. In those days, the boys were still relatively young and could race around the stage (or fly across by wire) in their high boots and costumes, with Gene Simmons spitting blood and pyrotechnics punctuating sybal crashes.
I was 16 at the time, and a head banging, black T-shirt wearing, long haired, rock nut. The audience was full of the same, but I noted that there were a lot of older people who had come just for the spectacle. Everyone enjoyed the concert from what i heard of the comments as we filed out of the stadium.
KISS returned to NZ in 2001. I went to the Auckland concert. perhaps it was that my tastes had become more discerning or that the band members had become older and less fit, but the concert was shocking! The pyrotechnics had got bigger, perhaps to disguise the fact that their musicianship actually sucked.
The crowd was older this time around, and I noted looks of confusion on a lot of faces... people were wondering why they'd wasted the ticket money on these old hacks.
A lot of people loved it, but not me.
Still, My teen years were spent adoring KISS, and I still like to resurrect "Kiss Alive 1" from time to time.

In pursuit of filling out my CD collection... this weeks purchases include:
Deep Purple In Rock
Pink Floyd, Meddle
Frank Zappa, Bongo Fury
Alice Cooper, Welcome To My Nightmare
The Feelers, Playground Battle
Shihad, The General Electric
I've gone a bit mad on buying stuff, even to ordering discs from overseas that I can't find locally.
The last two CD's on the above list are New Zealand bands, so don't be confused if you haven't heard of them.
Shihad is my current rave. This band was actually pulled to America by impressed American music producers, but they arrived just as 9/11 happened, and were told they had to change their name if they wanted to make it in the states... "Shihad" sounded too much like "Jihad", and people wouldn't go for it.
So they changed their name to Pacifier... which was a huge mistake. The premise was to instill a feeling of peace in the midst of the terrorist chaos, and to identify them with New Zealand through the correlation to the 'Pacific" region. In doing this, they alienated NZ fans and got nowhere in America... it was a stoopid name!
They returned to NZ and returned to their roots, reclaiming 'Shihad' as their identity, and they've gotten bigger and better down under... Australia love these guys too! And they play sell-out concerts in England. But America eluded them.
I post three youtube references here for your listening pleasure if you so desire.
All songs are from the album I just bought; "The General Electric".

In my box of 'things' I have a bottle of Isopropyl Alcohol.
"What's that?" you may ask.
I dcan't remember who told me this little gem, but Isopropyl Alcohol is about the best cleaner you can get for CD's and LP's. It's also good for cleaning off the glue left behind from stickers on CD covers.
Anyway, I've had this bottle of cleaner for 10 years, and just noticed the other day that it was nearly empty.
So I went to a pharmacist, which is where I procured the last bottle, and asked for a refill.
Sheesh! You'd think I'd asked for a field full of opium poppies. The parmacist glared at me and asked for my name, phone number, address, and occupation.
"Erm... I just want a bottle of CD cleaner... what's the hassle?"
Turns out Isoprpyl alcohol is a concentrated form of pseudoephedrine, and that's the prime ingredient for making methamphetamine.
It just so happened that I had a CD of the Foo Fighters in my car... it was dirty. I retuirned to the pharmacist with the CD as proof of my intentions, but he had already called the police.
Whiloe we were waiting for Mr Plod to arrive, dang me if the pharmacist didn't clean my CD for me.... using Isoprpyl Alcohol.
When the police arrived, I explained the situation. I was lucky in that the cop was a music collector and knew exactly what I was talking about.
He okayed the sale of the liquid to me, but the law is the law... my name is now recorded on the police database as a drug ingredient buyer.
This means that if I'm ever caught with any form of illegal chemical substance, I can be arrested.
At first, I didn't care; I don't do drugs.... but if you think about it... laws are often reviewed and updated and changed.
I could be arrested one day for doing something I didn't know was illegal... and my record would show that I was a buyer of methamphetamine ingredients.
I used to be of the opinion that such things as fingerprinting, DNA samples, or retina recording was a only harmful to the people who flouted the law. Now I'm not so sure.
The freedom that should be ours by right has become muddied in supposition and association.
If i could be scrutinized by the law for cleaning a CD, where will it end?
Why do good people have to suffer for the crimes of others?
Edit: To clarify.... there are herbal pills on the market that offer the taker a "buzz". If you drink copious amounts of Coca-Cola, you effectively ingest a substance that can kill you given quantities taken in a relatively short period of time.
But here's the kicker... sugar in excess leads to diabetes, salt leads to hardening of the arteries, unsaturated fats will clog your lifelines, and if scientists want to prove that lettuce will stunt your growth, I'm sure they'll find the proof.
And you know the crazy thing? I don't even listen to my CD's... I download them onto my computer and listen to digitally enhanced music.
And if I want to hear something I haven't got on CD, I can usually find it on Youtube.
I'm a collector. This is another word for "silly bastard!"

Wow, that's something I haven't heard of here in the states. I don't think anybody here would get suspected by the police for having rubbing alcohol. It does make a great cleaner and disinfectant. I used to keep a bottle under the bathroom sink, but I'm not sure where it's gone after the move.

In addition to cleaning CDs, it is also good for removing marker from skin. Unless you have an awkward reaction and actually do get red spots.
"Huh" you're probably saying. Let me explain. In school, we're learning about Moses and the 10 plagues. When we did the boils, mom took a marker and put little dots on our arms, then cleaned them off with rubbing alcohol. Except, the purple marker (I'll be darned if we can find the right color) wore off of me, but I still had red spots. Anyway...
@ Wetheril: My family's bottle of rubbing alcohol is downstairs, next to the pink crates and under the calender. Unless mom moved it.

Finally it came, Mediate by INXS. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFUEgFdP5zE) When that wasn't any help I thought - bah, then I remembered a similar video with Warhol in it and I thought that must be it.

That sounded a bit dubious to me, having much experience with both rubbing alcohol and pseudoephedrine,* so I did a bit of research on Wikipedia. I was able to confirm that the chemical formulas and molecular structures of the two drugs have very little in common. However, in the methamphetamine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methamphetamine) article, I found references to another chemical called isopropylbenzylamine (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Isopropylbenzylamine), which is very chemically similar to methamphetamine and is often used to dilute it.
So I'm not sure whether your pharmacist was simply confusing isopropyl alcohol with isopropylbenzylamine, or if there is actually some way to convert the one to the other. I suspect it may have been a confusion on his part, because if rubbing alcohol really could be converted into a substance used in producing meth, the US Gov't. would surely have made it as hard to get as pseudoephedrine is nowadays. (Yeah, and thanks to all those meth labs for making the only good decongestant so hard to acquire. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/tongue.gif)
Or the confusion may have been on the part of the NZ legislature, and the pharmacist may have been following the law even if he knows it's a dumb law...
______
* Using them, not ingesting them! Well, okay, you do ingest pseudoephedrine, because that's how it works, but... Oh, never mind.

There is a third option... that I misinterpretted what the Pharmacist said to fit with what I already know about the subject (of methamphetamine), which is close to nothing. I tend to think this is most likely.
But good know you're checking up on me, Young Ned!

While not the key ingredient, rubbing alcohol along with many other common household items can be used in the manufacture of meth. Many times law enforcement, particularly if they are seeing an increase of meth related activities, will enlist the aid of merchants in helping with the problem. This is often done by asking the merchant to inform them of or limit large sales of these ingredients. However, a bottle of rubbing alcohol shouldn't arouse anyone's suspicion as it has a slew of obvious legitimate uses - cleaning wounds and electronic gadgetry to name a few.

Incidentally that clip came from Let the Good Times Roll (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qn6CKWga0Bo) from 1973 which depending on when it was filmed put Bo Diddley around 45. Not that 45 is that old, still as I stated before his performance appears to belie that fact.

Folks what I'm referring to is commonly known as the Bo Diddley Beat. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bo_Diddley#The_Bo_Diddley_beat_and_guitar) You can scroll down from the link for a list of some of the songs.
I was well aware of Bo Diddley when I was much younger and the Bo Diddley Beat. I remember being in a club with some buddies when George Michael's Faith was fresh out. It came on and it was apparently the first time one of my friends heard it.
He became livid sayin that Kiss and Ace Frehley in particular should sue him for copying the beat and especially the beginning riff to the song. And that Michael should have to pay them and so on and so forth.
It got real interesting when I told him that Kiss/Frehley's New York Groove was actually a cover since it was actually a song by Hello a Brit band. Then I told him if he was worried about the intro that everyone involved from Hello, Kiss, Frehley and Michael should be paying Bo Diddley as well as a slew of other artists for other songs. Well actually there was a bet involving a full night of drinks involved - that's what made it interesting. :)
I will agree that the openings are real good examples to compare. You have to be about 45 seconds into Faith before it starts.

As far as additions I gotta ponder that a bit more. A few I can name right now whereas some of the others I have to try to think about more independently - separating sentiment, etc....
I wholeheartedly agree with this, "I'm not just looking for a guitarist that plays hard and fast. I'm also looking for skill in composition and approach. Can they play as a maestro, and also within a group frame?"
Regarding that statement and especially the first part that is why it was so hard to cut Leo Kottke. When I seen his name I thought of his injury which brought a couple of other artists with similar "obstacles" to mind.
Anyway off to "consternate" and mutter some more. Plus I'm only partway through this Sryth surfing session.

Well r/l interludes notwithstanding I'm currently caught up on forum posts (minus fiction threads) so before I start pondering guitarists and since I'm about ready to change my musical tag I thought of this.
There's a rep-able question at the end of this....
There's been much drama and misinformation about the Lynyrd Skynyrd Neil Young "feud". Most of this is based on songs by Young and Skynyrd. Young's songs Southern Man and Alabama refer to racism - particularly in the south.
Skynyrd responded with Sweet Home Alabama. The lines "Well I heard Mister Young sing about her. Well, I heard ole Neil put her down. Well, I hope Neil Young will remember A southern man don't need him around anyhow." specifically fueled rumors of this "feud".
Actually Young and Ronnie Van Zant/Skynyrd were friends. Part of the reason for Skynyrd's song was in response to the stereotype of the southern redneck image. I could go on and on about this and cite references but I won't.
However Neil Young sent Lynyrd Skynyrd one of his song's for them to record but unfortunately tragedy struck when the band's plane crashed and Young eventually recorded the song himself.
No googling/searching please as these would be easily revealed.
Question: Name the song.
Bonus: Allegedly Young gave the band two more songs to record. Name either or both of them.

Also after a little FRETting (pardon the pun) here are my additions.

Duane Allman
Chuck Berry
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Les Paul
Randy Rhoads

Stevie Ray was one I thought of retrospectively.
Les Paul was a good call... but I discounted it for the fact that making a guitar isn't the same as playing it.... and before you shoot me down, I know Les Paul was a good player.
As for the others, they are all worthy of consideration, but I can't place them above the original list. Another name falls into the same genre: Chet Atkins.
So, Oldschool.... I can quite happily exchange Stevie Ray for Peter Townsend.
The new list lookes like this:
Joe Satriani
Eric Clapton

Jimi Hendrix
Jimmy Page

I also have personal favourites... Leo Kottke is a guitar god to me.
But popular decisions speak otherwise. You seem like a guy who knows his music, so I won't say anything against your decisions.
However, my final three would look like this:
Carlos Santana
Frank Zappa
Eric Clapton
To cut any of these guitarists is difficult, but the first I'd take out is...
Frank Zappa:
I love listening to this guy. If you are familiar with his compositions, you will know that the lyrics are aside from the music. Frank Zappa was a 'shock rocker'; and in his own words, he looked for 'the freaks'. Zappa himself, developed his style from that premise, and his style encompassed everything from rock to jazz to be-bop to orchestral. Avante-gaude was an artistic bent to explain artistic music... but Frank Zappa transcended the art. He made it weird!
Frank Zappa was an awesome guitarist, but he was also an innovator. He stepped beyond the boundaries of acceptable listening to gift us with the pre-cursor to Prog rock.
Eric Clapton:
This guy is a survivor. he played in band like Cream and The Yardbirds, developing his style in a time when rock music was finding its footing. From there, he became a name in his own right... through Derek & the Dominoes to a solo artist; exploring rock, then grounding himself in the Blues.
The Blues is a stylistic form of music, but Eric Clapton meshed the two in a way that grabbed both audiences. His best album was, arguably, Slowhand, which took rock and country and meshed them in a way that was acceptable to fans of both genres. Even when he re-arranged songs by other people, he made them historically brilliant. Cocaine is a good example of this.
Eric Clapton stays as one of my top guitarists for his ability to play, and compose, and present.
Carlos Santana:
Carlos is not my favourite musician, but he is my pick for all-time best guitarist. I don't have any of his albums, but you know something? I get a great deal od satisfaction when I listen to him play.
His mastery of the guitar is second to none, and by that I mean... he can play, and play in a way that is appealing to an international audience. He is technically perfect, but also open to interpretation of any tune presented to him.
Given my critique, it might sirprise you where my final choice lies.
Cut two... leave one.

I'm satisfied with your final choice.
Hiowever, Im well aware that choosing a guitarist over any other is difficult when you consider the style of music they attend to. Frank Zappa was, basically, a rocker. He might say otherwise, but his greatest compostions were licks that endured.
Can you name a hit by FZ? I bet not.
His biggest selling hit was a silly song that no-one remembers except the people who bought it... 1981... You Are What You Is. He sold more recordings with the duo he did with his daughter, Moon Unit Zappa... Valley Girl.
Personally, I would have sat on Leo Kottke, and this is why....

Well he/she is a credited artist on the album. But by pseudonym only. The person in question had to use a pseudonym because his/her real name couldn't be listed on the album. I'm guessing since he/she was probably under contract elsewhere or possibly because while popular at the time he/she was/is definitely not considered "metal", which may have turned off metal fans.
Wondering was his/her real name listed on wiki. Of course googling his/her pseudonym would probably reveal his/her real name.
EDIT: Dang.... wiki does have a pile of info. Listed both the real name and pseudonym. It did clear up the reason as it stated that due to the artist's affiliation with another label his/her real name couldn't be used.
Oh what the h@ll I'm referring to Booker T. Boffin aka Thomas Dolby (see current tag). Thought it also interesting that his real name is Thomas Morgan Robertson.

Oh, yeah, Karen Carpenter was, too.
And wait, wasn't Gene Krupa a drummer, too? But now we're reaching the limits of what I can dredge up from my brain.

John Bonham
Keith Moon
These two will always be in my top three... but who is the third?
And if these two were the final considerations, who would win?
For me, John Bonham is a drumming god.
Moby Dick is the quintisential drum solo.

Next category in "Best of" will be vocalists... singers who stand out as being.... well, stand out.
But just to proove that one of my inclusions for guitar greats wasn't pulled out of the hat... Yngie Malmsteen... watch this:

In the meantime, I've just come across a video that was so obviously a piss-take.
Robert Palmer perfected the sexist video, with good looking girls strutting behind him while he sang. The walk became cheekily referred to as, "The Palmer Girls".
I just saw the same video in reverse... good looking guys strutting behind.... who?
Hint... a country singer.

And the fact that I'd be looking at a country song... she must be good looking.

No cutting of lists? I agree on Bonham and Moby Dick. I'm curious who you left out of your "big three".
Regarding Yngwie Malmsteem - he's one of the cuts I had second thoughts about before I cut him and even more so more after.
He is often wrongly pigeon holed as only a shredder. Shredder he is but he is so much more which is often overlooked. Some of his stuff is so freakin' fast it's often "lost" on folks especially on a quick listen.
Oh and regarding "And the fact that I'd be looking at a country song... she must be good looking."
Not a country fan I take it. That oughta make any vocalist discussions interesting.
Oh and regarding the video/song. Good looking - yes. Country, well real country - that's debatable.
And definitely a rip-off, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHbdC1U1EaE

I'm going to be out of touch for a while... so here is my list of top 5 drummers, with explanations... and in order.
John Bonham: He's dead. That doesn't stop him from being amazing. "Moby Dick" will always be a drum solo to go "wow" at. The live version has only been bettered by....
Bill Bruford: This guy originally played with the Prog rock group, YES. He also did a stint with Cream and King Crimson, and it's the latter where you will find his genius manifest. Bill Bruford switched between bands because he was a free-stylist, and he played against the written tune... but not... and with... and without. Only one other player was as mad as him, and that was...
Keith Moon: Who went the same way as John Bonham, but he did it in such style that his name is immortalized in the annals of rock history... he was the original punk rocker who complimented Peter Townsend on guitar, and f*** you if you think otherwise. Unfortunately, he's also dead.
Now, number 4 invented the triple parradiddle, but did it in such a way that it sounded like he did it on purpose. The strange thing is, he is not noted for being a great drummer. what he did was set the beat to some of the most well known songs in existence, behind a singer who was Mick Jagger.
Personally, I think the Rolling Stones should have quit with the release of Tattoo You, but it's in this album that you will hear Charlie Watts get down and dirty. He was the beat-master before the beat box was thought of.
and number 5? There was a band .... brilliant in it's time. The lead singer was Peter Gabriel, and this guy is a god when it comes to composing... his drummer was the guy who went on to pathe the way for gorillas and drummers as being a popular sound... you know who I'm talking about, yeah?

Those are my choices of drummers to remember... I don't know much about Bassists.... keyboard players are easy... the stand out's stand out, not least of which is Jon Lord (Deep Purple) and Rick Wakeman (Yes) and Jackson Browne... the Loadout is an all time classic that ends with "Stay".
But lets zero in on vocalists... because this is a category of music where the people are the front of every song you know and love.
Name me your top ten favourite vocalists.
I'll drop one and hope you agree.... Freddie Mercury!

k.d. lang
Anthony Head (not so great as a songwriter, tragically)
Lucinda Williams
Peter Heppner (Wolfsheim)
Emmylou Harris
Sarah Bettens (K's Choice)
Dave Gahan (Depeche Mode)
Davey Havok (AFI/Blaqk Audio)
Willie Nelson
Angie Hart (Splendid/Frente)
I could go on indefinitely with this list, though...

Psychoadepts list got me thinking.... basically, I was thinking one dimensionally, which is to say, I was thinking about rock singers.
How short sighted was I?
In the rock genre, I keep Freddie mercury at the top of my list.
Robert Plant plays a part, but from the past; he's got a bit croaky recently.
Alice Cooper has a particular sound that needs mention; he's not a great vocalist, but his gravelly voice lends creedence to his music.
And what about Tom Waits? or Leonard Cohen? Or Joe Cocker?
It depends on the style of music you enjoy. Enya, for example, or Sinead O'Connor.
I caught a bus home from work today, and that was a big mistake, because I forgot that Pearl Jam is playing a concert at Mt Smart stadium, which is spitting distance from my house.
I waited for that bus for 15 minutes, and when it arrived, the bus driver threw me an apologetic glance and didn't stop: his bus was full of people on their way to the concert.
So I walked... laden down with an impromptu grocery shop that included tangeloes, bananas, apples, health bars, cereal, and other stuff that is supposed to be good for me.
by the time I got home, I was hot, bothered, and weary... and I poured myself a wine.
The health food can wait till tomorrow.

OK new question inspired by one of the names off of one of mine and Badstench's recent lists.
Question:
What Brit band actually bleached their hair for a gum commercial before hitting it big? Many folks think it was done for image reasons.
Dooli was correct - The Police.
As for the current discussion....
As far as best vocalists or singers to try to come up with just ten favorites across all genres would lead to more dismay than that guitarist list that Ive rehashed - and more than once. So I'll list ten country singers that I particularly like.
1. George Jones
2. Johnny Cash
3. Merle Haggard
4. Bill Monroe
5. Hank Williams, Jr.
6. Patty Loveless
7. Alison Krauss
8. Loretta Lynn
9. Dolly Parton
10. Patsy Cline
That's giving equal time to the genders. I only got about halfway through those that come IMMEDIATELY to mind and that's not counting such greats as The Stanley Brothers, The Carter Family, Flatt and Scruggs, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams, Sr., Tammy Wynette, Lefty Frizell, Marty Robbins, Charley Pride...... whoops that's 10 more so I better stop........
I should say that while I tend to favor southern rock and metal (from "hair" to thrash to the "New Wave of British Heavy Metal" and anything in between) I grew up listening to country and bluegrass and am still fond of it and enjoy it.

2/14/2010 will be a great day when I will be going to see Slayer & Megadeth live at the Tsongas Arena in Lowell, MA. I am also thinking of going to the show that is a few days before this one. That show is at Chevrolet Theatre in Wallingford, CT on 2/9/2010.
Sweeeeeeeeeeet..... the only thing that would top that would be if Metallica and Anthrax were also on the bill making a "Big Four Tour" a reality.
While Mustaine's skills and talent can't be questioned hopefully he's truly turned over a new leaf and they'll be no high drama involving him as controversy definitely swarms around him.
Forum colleagues "across the pond" are probably the only ones who can truly fathom this - I was going to say appreciate but even as a figure of speech that seems an inappropriate term.
In the late 80's Megadeth was on tour in the UK (I think Northern Ireland). Before they played their final song Anarchy in the UK Mustaine announced that (I'm paraphrasing) "this one goes out to The Cause" causing fights to break out.
Mustaine claimed he didn't know the ramifications of uttering that and was inspired by fans wearing bootlegged t-shirts which supported 'The Cause'. Supposedly for the remainder of the tour the band traveled in a bulletproof bus. The incident and/or tour inspired the song, "Holy Wars - The Punishment Due"
EDIT: I should clarify for members not aware that "The Cause" was a reference to the IRA.
Edit2: Holy Wars - The Punishment Due is basically a two-parter with an short acoustic separation. While the first part was inspired by the above the second was inspired by Marvel Comics The Punisher which has also inspired at least two movies.

Can't argue with you on any of the names you mentioned. I noticed that a lot of the names that immediately sprang to my mind were bluegrass and country singers.
It's funny that while I'm a fan of rock in general, none of the vocalists who came to my mind were from that genre. I don't think it lends itself nearly as well to displays of vocal talent as some other genres (particularly jazz and show tunes and anything acoustic).
Which brings to mind yet more exceptional vocalists. The trouble, of course, is that vocalists get the most attention in general, so it's easiest to come up with a list of good ones.

I can think of a list of rockers also but it is easier to come up with names of country/bluegrass artists. For me it's the fact that while many of them have or are in a band they are known as individual artists. It's often harder to seperate "rockers" from their band.
Along the same lines and because of recent discussions about James Taylor, Elton John, Paul Simon, and Art Garfunkel similar artists come to mind. Whether you call 'em singer/songwriters, folk musicians or something else for that matter.
Ten off the top of my head and not including the ones just mentioned as well as Tom Waits and Leonard Cohen that Badstench mentioned a few posts ago.
1. Van Morrison

3. Joan Baez

One of my favorite bands is Judas Priest and one of my favorite "rockers" is Rob Halford.
I previously posted about one of Priest's standards "The Green Manalishi" being a Peter Green/Fleetwood Mac cover.
After I posted the singer/songwriters, folk singers I was listening to songs of that "genre" and thought about another Priest "standard" that is actually another cover.
Two different versions of a great song - both by singers with awesome pipes.
Diamonds and Rust - Judas Priest's version. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyOIXLubYfs)
Diamonds and Rust - Joan Baez's original. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GGMHSbcd_qI)
Halford does an excellent acoustic version also. I'd like to see him and Baez do a duet of the song. It was often speculated that Bob Dylan was the inspiration for the song. While Joan had said previously that her ex-husband was the inspiration more recently she has admitted that the character in the song refers to Dylan.

I didn't state that very well. In her memoir And a Voice to Sing With she mentions that she told Dylan it was about Harris. I googled the song to see if Dylan and Baez ever did a version of it together since it was about him when I came across that info which surprised me as well. I doubt Dylan "bought it" either as like you say it's pretty obvious that it's about him.
I haven't read Baez's book but the wiki page on the song has an excerpt from it about the conversation and a later interview she did in the Huffington Post indicating that it was about Dylan. Not much of a scoop there.

It seems the "vocalist" category has elicitied a wide ranging response.
I have to admit, I was surprised to see the inclusions offered.... not that I'm against the vocalists chosen... it just happened to be beyond my original thought of the question.
Following from the guitar Q and the drum Q, I assumed you would choose vocalists from the rock genre.
Regardless, I looked at your lists and thought... ah! Yep, those are good vocalists... or are they?
Some of them are good singers.
So... what's the difference between a vocalist and a singer?

Hmmm, interesting question to ponder.
To me a vocalist has a wide range and is technically on top of their game. Like you make reference to a vocalist can be a good singer.
A singer may not be a top drawer vocalist. However a singer can impart the song's "message" and bring emotion and feeling into it and convey the same.
Some of my favorites are excellent vocalists while most, if not all, are excellent singers.
Bob Dylan is a good example. Many folks immediaely discount him because of his voice/vocals. If one can get over or past this and actually listen to his singing his talent is apparent.
Oh and as far as rockers I definitely got a list of them - problem is paring it down to ten.

For me, a top vocalist has to do more than sing appealing songs... they need a certain level of singing skill. For instance, Bob Dylan would never make my list of top vocalists, even though I enjoy his songs. (Although, frankly, I usually enjoy them more when they're sung by someone else!) He is certainly a skilled songwriter and harmonica player, and he can carry a tune just fine, but the voice itself is just... bleah.
I think people diverged from the rock theme because the term "vocalist", itself, tends to be associated more with pop or even "easy listening" rather than rock. In my experience, when a music store (I almost said "record store", dating myself) has a "Vocals" section, it usually contains people like Frank Sinatra, Rosemary Clooney, or even Barry Manilow...

The difficulty I had with the question was a) I don't have much sense of the technical skill of most rock singers and b) of the singers I could think of who were the most technically skilled, there are about two who I would describe as among my favorite artists (and they're the top two on the list). All the rest fall into the category of "wow, they've got talent, but given the choice, I'd rather listen to this other person..." So which ones are really the "better" artists?
Lucinda Williams, who's third on the list, I picked because, at least for me, listening to her sing is like hearing a painting. When she's at her best, I get more vivid mental images from her music than from just about anything else I've ever heard. Singers like her make me think of a quote from Stravinsky that I came across in a book I read recently: "I don't want the sound of someone playing this passage [the opening of Rite of Spring: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SgHMpYsv0_0], I want the sound of someone TRYING to play it!" (Stravinsky had rejected a bassoon player who was too good, technically, because they couldn't create the emotional impact he wanted.) Case in point, Johnny Cash performing Hurt: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SmVAWKfJ4Go

Vocalists can be called “singers”, but not all singers can be called “vocalists”.
A Vocalist is a musician whose instrument is his/her voice. As such, they have usually undergone some type of formal training to maximize the potential of their voices. Vocalists can be typified by opera singers. Vocalists are capable of playing musical instruments, but they have also trained their voices to be an instrument in its own right.
“Singers” are people who can sing, hopefully in tune and conversant with such nuances as pitch and tone. Of course, there are some people who think they’re a singer, but they’re actually delusional.
Then there are the people who should never attempt to sing! I fit into this category

Top 10 bands notwithstanding... I'm going to be away for a week.
as such, I'm going to leave you with a conundrum.
Bear with me, this will sound complicated, but the answer is merely a matter of following the white rabbit.
When I get back in 7 days, I fully expect to see a correct answer.
There are a few parts to this question, each part demanding some cosideration. If you answer wrong in the first part, this will affect your second answer, and so on.
Take care.
Q1) Asks you to look at three sets of lyrics. Each set should give you the name of a band... time is short, I must away.
lyric 1) "kick it on back, kick it on back, kick it on back to what you know
"Gimme some love, gimme some love, gimme to the hard rock radio"
lyric 2) "Well, I was down on the prowl down by the edge of the track, and
"Like a son of a Jackal, I'm the leader of the pack, but...."
lyric 3) "I wanted to look for you. You walked in. I didn't know just what I should do,
"so I sat back down and had a beer and felt sorry for myself.
if you've figured out the three bands from above, take the first letter of each band's name and correspond it to the relevant number of the alphabet.
the resulting number should look something like this: 18-5-12 (which is nowhere near correct).
add 1
Q2) this is also a three part question that asks you to utilise your knowledge of bands from the genre "Progressive Rock". I'm fully aware some of you might be too young to know, so Googling is allowed. It won't help, though.
Look at the names of the following bands and choose one from each group. The ones you choose are Prog rock groups
Group 1:
Led Zeppelin
Yes
Black Sabbath
Group 2:
Emerson Lake & Palmer
Deep Purple
Cream
Group 3:
The Rolling Stones
The Beatles
Pink Floyd
when you're happy with your choices, count the total number of letters that make up the three bands of your choice.
add this to the number derived from question 1.
Q3) These next 3 questions are straight out general knowledge. Again, getting it wrong will affect the outcome.
1) Who was the guitarist for The Who?
a) Trevor Rabin
b) Jeff Beck
c) Peter Townsend
2) Who quit the Beatles for love?
a) Brian Jones
b) John Lennon
c) George Harrison
3) Who is credited with (arguably) the greatest guitar riff ever?
a) Stevie Ray Vaughan
b) Jon Lord
c) Bill Haley
take the letter of each answer, add them as numbers (ie a=1, b=2,c=3)
add the total to your number from the previous questions.
****************************
If you have followed the white rabbit, you should have a number that corresponds to mine.
When I get back... in 7 days... I'll check it out.

Nice lists Badstench, SMV and Psychoadept. SMV I recognize both of your lists, although admittedly I'm more familiar with the groups from the first.
All of the lists are full of folks that rock. Especially nice to note the women from SMV's second list - can't let the boys have all the fun.
EDIT: Pardon me, I should include Ms or is it Mrs? Manson of Garbage (off of Psychoadept's list) in with the women from SMV's list.

Very nice, Z&T!
For perfectly understandable reasons, given the kid's age, they left out one of the verses (the one beginning with "Asking only workman's wages")... but they replaced it with a verse that wasn't in the original recording, only in live versions recorded much later (the one beginning with "Now the years are rolling by me"), so that works. :cool:

A few bands were named that weren't on my list that gave me cause for pause.
Aerosmith? The quintisential rock band... However, Steve Tyler took too much control. His voice was unmistakeable as the 'face' of Aerosmith. Without him, the band wouldn't exist. He was... "The Voice"!
Creedence Clearwater Revival? I'm having a hard time qualifying why these guys don't make it. In a weird way, their music had me toe-tapping and hand-slapping like no other band has done.
But that's why they don't make it. For me, the music isn't about toe-tapping... it's about the visualization in my head. When my head starts nodding or waving... that's the sign that I'm "in the groove".
I look at my original list and see a couple of entires that could be replaced. For example, I have a fondness for Jethro Tull and T. Rex. But that's just me... my peculiarities.
Did anyone mention Queen? I just paid an exhorbitant amount of money for the live album, "Queen Live Killers".

I came up with 82 - but I'm "dq'ing" myself since I had to look up the lyrics for the Weezer song in the first part.
Either I'm wrong somewhere else or you are counting the & in Emerson Lake & Palmer as one character whereas I spelled 'and' out counting it as three characters.
Either way - nice post.

I found a disc lying among my brother's music selection... it was Kiss, Greatest Hits.
I can't believe they had too many 'hits', but listening to the CD sent me down memory lane.
I was a Kiss soldier back in the day... had as many LP's as I could afford as a teenager, and my bedroom wall was covered in pics and posters of the band members in all their refinery.
I cringe when I listen to them now.
But I have to admit, Paul Stanley (the lead singer) had a fantastic rock voice, which makes me wonder why his name never appeared on the 'vocalist' lists.

Joe Satriani
I remember that "Surfing With The Alien" had people humming. I remember thinking that "Flying In a Blue Dream" was awesome.
I have "Crystal Planet" among my CD collection. I love it.
But there the accolade for Mr Satriani stops.
Joe brought instrumental guitar albums to us, and made it okay... Steve Vai followed hard on his heels, and then we remembered guitarists like Yngwie Malmstein.
Instrumental albums became popular... for a very short while.
I'm over Joe now, in much the same way that I got over listening to drum solos or endless bass riffs.
Maybe it's a condition of age? That I'm getting more discerning in my musical taste, but I want the full picture. I want the full noise. I want the composition in all its glory.
I just acquired Joe Stariani, "Super Collosal". I listened to the first three tracks and thought, "Whatever!"

Lol... maybe it is an age thing Badstench as I feel the same way - sorta.
Instumentals that I've "grew old" with are still enjoyable to me but "new" ones for the most part don't spark as much interest as they would've before.
Rock instrumentals - nice category for a favorite list. Off the top of my head here's ten I still tap my toes and bob my head to.
Moby Dick - Led Zeppelin (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdJWPgzS_lQ) Part 2 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D5rp3EAZkLQ&feature=channel) Part 3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B-QkNNTyRFk&feature=related)
Jessica - Allman Brothers (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WfM6nRVBvGs)
YYZ - Rush (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_mR0tzt9XaM)
Orion - Metallica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbUJilAbPQA)

Blue - Yngwie Malmsteen (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SzW8fi8z5C8)
Atom Heart Mother - Pink Floyd (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkzHXlFUBwU)
Wring That Neck - Deep Purple (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pf7izXdJKrc)
Soul Sacrifice - Santana (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XnamP4-M9ko)
Actually "off the top of my head" may not be true but after I thought about rock instrumentals they started coming to me and like many things I thought just ten :eek: no way so.....
I could take just a few of most of the above artists and flesh out a top ten rock instrumental list rather nicely. Also Tubular Bells (The Exorcist theme) by Mike Oldfield and Sirius (Chicago Bulls intro) by the Allan Parsons Project should be noted.
Also I'd feel remiss if I didn't mention Frank Zappa, Duane Eddy, the Ventures, Booker T and the MG's, Jeff Beck and .................
Well I know what I'll be mostly listening to over the next coupla days - rock instrumentals and Christmas music of all sorts.

A commercial came on TV advertising a massive CD clearance sale at the Auckland Showgrounds. As it happens, I live within a cooee of the said showgrounds and went for a look-see, armed with EFTPOS card and a healthy bank balance.
The practical upshot is that the '"sale" was a bit of a gnab gib. I bought a few CD's, but the choices weren't fantastic. However, I did find a couple of Lynyrd Skynyrd CD's for $2.99 each... "Second Helping" and "Nuthin' Fancy".
Are you asking, what's a gnab gib?
Douglas Adams's term for an anticlimactic conclusion.

Douglas Adams's term for an anticlimactic conclusion.
Correct. Chosen because it's "big bang" spelled backwards, which makes it the opposite of a big bang...

Nice song indeed Arik. I actually thought of another Pink Floyd instrumental first - Intestellar Overdrive. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_2wud_RqEaM) However and as much as I like Pink Floyd it's a bit "trippier" than what I normally listen to. With that said it's still a nice song.
Recently overheard at Tallys's Trading Post:
Careful with that Axe Eugene (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wO6cSOp_5JQ) and bundle up if you're heading to the Obelisk at the Battlegrounds or you may end up with a case of Terminal Frost. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySV38WIiu-0) :cool:

Recently Scout and Badstench posted about getting MP3 players. I don't have one but Santa brought my daughter one so I'll be getting acquainted with them anyways. Also my thought was that once I got the learning curve down a bit 'ol dad would get himself one.
I like the fact that you can just buy the song(s) you want so no more buying an album for one or two songs. The downside for me will be putting myself on a budget and deciding which songs to get now and which to get later.
I'm sure Badstench and Scout can remember vinyl - hell that's my earliest memory. I had a neighbor whose dad was a dyed in the wool audiophile. I can remember him having reel to reel and other high-end equipment.
My own experience was with vinyl then 8-tracks, cassettes, CD's and coming soon - MP-3....
I can still see me and my buddies cruising around with an 8-track stereo system playing 8-tracks and cassettes loaded into one of those converter cartridges (http://technabob.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/8track_cassette_adapter.jpg) - lol.

I'm still getting to grips with my new MP3 player... i've managed to download some songs onto it and can hear them replayed.
my problem is with the ear-piece. It falls out!
I had the epiphone to plug my main headphones into it, and it a) sounds good, and b) makes me understand why I see people walking around with big headphones!
but... now I have this stick-of-a-thing that plays all my favourite music, but I need to wear a cumbersome set of headphones to get the best quality of sound. Isn't this an oxymoron?
Mind you, I remember my best friend was gifted with a double cassete, big mother portable sound system that required broad shoulders to heft around, and that was cool, man! And we played it loud... with Kashmir or KISS.

Just got my batteries charged up. I'll be experimenting when I'm done reading here.......
EDIT:
I downloaded music to the new MP3 player with little problem. It sounded pretty good.
I couldn't make the video player part work though. Every time I downloaded a video it went into the music file instead of the video and when I hit play I got invalid file format.
I went on-line for help and couldn't find any.
I read reviews from consumers (some with the same problem) and found that no one had anything good to say about the company, product and especially the (lack of) support.
I already packaged it up and it's going back. I think I'll look somewhere else for a different brand......
If anyone want's to know the brand so you don't get one, PM me.

I was into Progressive rock before I even knew there was such a term. One of the recordings my friends and I used to enjoy while sitting in my friend's room with the volume turned UP on his kick-ass stereo (with the black light casting eerie glows around the room... they were eerie 'cos we were stoned) was Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells. We also buzzed out to his other album, "Five Miles Out".
But I digress.

Do you mean ordering CD's? The freight cost to New Zealand makes this prohibitive. I can order direct from my local CD store. They incorporate the freight cost with their monthly order.

Nice albums Badstench. Weren't a lot of Yes albums (early ones at least) remastered and re-released with bonus tracks a few years back. Tubular Bells great album/song. A lot of folks think it's solely the track off of the Exorcist and don't know that's just the opening. Also if I'm not mistaken part of it was in Weird Science as well.

It's no big secret that I'm a fan of Frank Zappa.
The first time I heard his idiosyncratic approach to music was with the album, "Just Another Band From L.A"
It interested me, so I splashed out on the next album I spied in the record store (this was back when CD's hadn't hit the market). That album was "Hot Rats", and that sold me to FZ!
His best known albums are, arguably, Sheik Yerbouti or Joe's Garage, but my personal fave is the live album, "Roxy And Elsewhere".
This is a rock/jazz/funk fusion with a bit of hip hop thrown in.
In the words of the man himself, "It's all about the music!"

And trust me, if the first few seconds of these songs don't click for you, the rest probably won't help. If nobody knows it (or you're stuck going, "Yeah, that song!"), I can give you a hint.

Wasn't "Sweet Sir Galahad" a Joan Baez song?
I have no recollection what/who the song was actually about... I'm doing well just to remember the name! But I'll guess that it was about either Bob Dylan (Baez's lover for a while) or Gabriel Harris (Baez's son) or David Harris (the father of Gabriel) -- most likely David Harris, now that I think about it some more.
I'm also guessing that the bit about your tag is referring to Richard and Mimi Fariña, since Mimi was Joan Baez's sister.
Oldschool

Correct on two counts and duly repped.
Sweet Sir Galahad is a Baez song and Mimi Farina was Baez's sister.
I knew Farina was Baez's sister and my question was going to be along the lines of them being sisters. That was the limit of my knowledge before I posed the question. But when I googled her name and checked the wiki article it had a reference to Sweet Sir Galahad. The song was about Mimi and her second husband's (Milan Melvin) courtship/marriage following Richard Farina's death. Also Baez actually performed the song on the Smother's Brothers show before she sang it at Woodstock which many folks (including moi) mistakenly think was the song's debut.
Also Melvin Milan has his own IMDb page and was an actor as well as a music producer.
A few nice vids of the sisters singing together on YouTube also.

Since nobody seems to know the answer, we'll make it a little more of a puzzle. Well it has been a week so the answer is John Fogerty also of Creedence Clearwater Revival.
When Fogerty left CCR he changed labels. The former company had the rights to the CCR stuff and sued Fogerty saying his Old Man Down the Road was a rip off of the CCR song Run Through the Jungle. The suit was unsuccessful.

Which musician (from my current tag) now is an actor/actress in a hit award winning US television show that is still currently on prime time. Name the person and/or the show.
Also the persons real name and character's name are the same.

Just reread my question and realized it's not very good. Also all of the clips with the person I'm referring mentioned him in either the description or comments. So my tag selection had a clip of the band after he left (I've since changed the tag back).
Anyways the person I'm talking about is Creed Bratton of The Grass Roots who plays a character named Creed Bratton in the fantastic comedy series The Office which is one of my favorites.
Here's a clip showing Creed in both The Grass Roots and The Office. It opens with Creed in The Grass Roots (striped shirt) and when it shows him the second time you should be able to tell it's the same Creed Bratton from the show. Creed still sings and plays and since leaving The Grass Roots has released several solo albums.

A recent discussion about traditional folk music from the UK and Ireland got me thinking.
One of my favorite bands is Metallica who has done several covers of well known songs by other artists such as Seger's Turn the Page and Lynryd Skyryd's Tuesday's Gone.
Another well know cover they've done is Whiskey in the Jar. Name the original artist.

Back to my earlier Grass Roots question.
By the way do we have any Grass Roots or Office fans?
Here's a two parter.
The Grass Roots song in my current tag Let's Live for Today (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ySjxZDT_5SA) is a cover. Notice Creed from "The Office" in the striped shirt. The Grass Roots cited which band and song as their inspiration.
Another group had a similar song that was much earlier than either of the other versions. Folks with this group suggested they sue the Grass Roots (not the artist of the version the Grass Roots covered) but they did not.
Name this artist/song.

Glad to see Badstench is still posting - thought he might have been one of the ones arrested at the AC/DC concert (lol).
