View Full Version : A Complaint

As a preface, I love this game. It is the only game I play online or otherwise, though I have tried a number of others in the last few years.

I really dislike the new Fogbough Forest and Bowl of Blood scenarios because they require you to spend hours clicking through repetitive content. What makes this game great is the inventive story telling, combined with the option to grind or donate if you want to have a truly high level character. I do both, though I probably am more of a donator than a grinder. Fogbough and the Bowl of Blood (by gathering gems in the Lords of Ogredom) force you to sit at the computer for long periods of time without adding anything new to the story.

This bothers me. Having said that, I will now try to go gather more gems so I can try to rescue Teek and Idriskar.

I feel sorry to say... I agree. It's quite frustrating to sit there and click and click and click. Unfortunately quite a few recent updates came in this manner. Besides, it's ironic to see something that took us so much time to complete being effectively inferior to a +5/+5 goblin totem block. I thought it would be something different.

Now what I'm really expecting is only the new PGVI quest.

But there is this.....

"The full extent of the power contained in this ancient artifact of ogredom is unknown."

Yes but...
There are many items that say that. That may just be more of a flavor text. I really hope it's not.

I disagree with your summation. Although I'm not pointing any fingers, this kind of complaint reinforces the "I want" mentality: I want it beneficial, I want it powerful, and I want it now!

It wasn't long ago that I was reading a post by someone who was disappointed that new adventures can be finished realtively quickly. That person wanted 'longevity' with the playing experience.

You can't please everyone!

To answer funguy directly, you actually don't have to sit at the computer for long periods of time to achieve an end result for Fogbough unless you choose to. I never have... during the course of my normal playing routine, I alotted time to do a series of random explorations: The maxiumum 60 explorations in one excursion.

I don't feel that the half hour or so of button pushing has adversely affected my enjoyment... and to put this into perspective, I still haven't completed everything.

I look at things from a glass half full position: when I do get all the bags for Tallys and obtain 3 dragon totems, the satisfaction will be all the sweeter.

I don't have to have it right this moment!

I have to agree with Badstench on this.

For over a year now I've "lived" on the computer playing the game almost every minute I wasn't at work or asleep.

Over the last few week's I've barely played 3 hours a week, for various reasons, and I have since adopted the attitude that if I make the current content along with future stuff last I'll always have something to accomplish in the game.

There were a few "dry spells" in my short time playing Sryth that grinding was the only thing to do because I rushed through everything in my quest for adventure.

As Badstench's thread in the old form was titled, I've hit "The Limit" on grinding for now, so that makes savoring the new stuff even more important.....

Edit:

Sorry Bad, I was going to rep you but it won't let me right now. (remind me later.)

Edit 2: Rep'd......

Well to each their own I guess. I've got nothing against the three empty bags quest, because it doesn't really advance the game's plot (just like the Finger of Dead, Ice Shield, Wand of Dragon Fire to a lesser extent, quests). My guess, though, is that finding all the Fogbough locations will be necessary prerequisites to future major adventures, because Fogbough's story lines are based on numerous previous adventures (Silver Crest, Runeskin and Dreadstones among others). Hence my concern about the amount of clicking time it takes to get through Fogbough and the Lord of Ogredom/Bowl of Blood scenarios. My issue remains that I have very limited playing time (1 - 2 hours) each week, and I like to spend it on plot developing quests when they are available. When I do have extra time, or when there are no plot developing quest to play, I'll grind or go for the special items mentioned above.

For the record, I don't want more multiplayer scenarios, grinding spots or special item gathering quests. And I am happy with the release pace of plot developing story quests. I like this game, as I said above, because of the story based adventures that make it unique. Predicating these adventures on hours of repetitive item gathering, which is what the Bowl of Blood scenario amounts to, seems counterproductive to what makes this game unique.

And now, its back to Zumryn's Battlegrounds for another round...

Great, now I have an image of funguy dressed as Veruca Salt. And the musical number from Willy Wonka And the Chocolate Factory is in my head. :P

I just got the bowl, and am waiting for the LoO to reset so I can get my grind on. That massive carnage crawler was a tough one, I actually had to flee the first time I fought it.

as a non-AG member...I like the Fogbough series...it is frustrating...sure..but better than making another grinding run at Axepath!!!

It was a big disappointment when the muched hyped Tarn was AG only....and then Fogbough was the same...but around day 5....the GM permitted us non-AGer's to participate too...and well that was just swell:p

The Wand of Dragonfire is an item that will be needed to finish the Iron Dragon quest. As soon as the GM gets around to finishing the quest and tying off that loose end.

Now, that I agree with.... unless....

Something major was to happen which would bring:
a) one of the multiplayer opponents permanent banishment from Sryth. Then we could be entertained by the arrival of another baddie to replace it (with accompanying adventures leading up to its arrival, etc), or...
b) The sudden implosion of one of the grinding spots; say, the collapse of last vestige of the Tsaril ruins. This could likewise make way for a new replayable scenario to entertain us (at least until the umpteenth time we ventured through it).

Another thing to note about the grind requiring quests is that the GM tends to reduced the amount of grinding required after what the grinding is needed for turns up or just some time. E.g. the tarramyre weapons and bands, the dragon disc shards became far more likely drops

Yes yes, very good Dinkum. This is my world, and I'm just trying to get a nut, or a squirrel, or a gold egg, depending on the version.
