View Full Version : The Murk

OK, so I was running The Murk with Reha, when I discovered some things. They didn't keep me from completing the quest, but I didn't see them mentioned in the Wiki.
I found a new monster, a Grey Constrictor.
When I was exploring to get the disc shards, I went to the temple to save. In the "tunnel" I fought the last statue. The closest SAFE place was the temple, so I went there and saved. When I was going back to Ethulle, I had to fight about 3 more statues. This was not a problem for Alanne, although she didn't visit the temple before she had the staff.
After I got the Disc, I went to the trees. I didn't see any mention of firm ground near the three trees.
Also, there is no vague, unsettling feeling when approaching the temple.
GAAAAHHH!!!!! I wasn't thinking. I quit without saving because I messed up in the battle and I forgot about the server limits. Now I can't get back on. Grr. At least I saved before heading across the bridge.

This reminded me - a few times through the Murk I randomly stumbled on an empty stone slab. Never could do anything with it. Did it serve any purpose?

I also ran across a Grey Constrictor a couple days with Artemicia in the Murk. I do not recall seeing those before with my primary and other 2 secondaries.
The "vague unsettling feeling" seems to happen when you head towards the center of the maze before getting the Gnarled Wooden Staff. After you've picked it up, it seems to go away when you head back that way.
Like you, I'm really unclear if those are new or not, as my memory of playing the Murk before then is "murky".
This is slightly unrelated, but I just thought of it, since I read an old thread today in which some old-timers in Sryth mentioned what weapons they had (before the SSWs). I recall Badstench mentioning how he defeated the serpent with the Blade of the Fox. Now THAT is truly note-worthy! :D

Picky post of the day:
Why is this thread in "Replayable Scenarios?"

Because you technically CAN grind the Murk. It's boring, but you can.

Imagine all the 'common' silver and gold rings you can collect!
Note: Joddelle has 8 gold rings, plus 2 shiny gold rings from Stoneback hill. I'd have look to see her count on the silvers, but it's around 20.
Edit: The grey constrictors are very new. They weren't there when Violetta did murk, and I spent a couple days doing it, collecting 9+'s and SP values for the wiki (which I haven't added yet)

How do you collect that many common gold and silver rings?

They drop randomly when you fight the water elementals in the murk.

If the GM has added new stuff to The Murk, then maybe it's time to visit Tarkhald Crypt as well.
I seem to remember him promising to add to the crypt's content/revamp it last year in one of the monthly question's. I can't remember if The Murk was included in that promise or not. But since something has been added to it......
From the Wiki.....
January 2009
Next to step forward was Scout. He asked, “Will there be a use for the Thin Crystal Ring given to us by Eliora, the adventurer we helped to rescue in the depths of Tarkhald Crypt? And on the subject of Eliora, will we meet her again? Also, will Tarkhald Crypt have anything added to it?” Scout began to step back and remembered, “I was also wondering, will we ever be able to go to Phak-Rur again?” Scout then stepped back so someone else could ask their questions.
Answer:
The Thin Crystal Ring will have a use in the future, and it is planned to be tied in with the reappearance of Eliora -- who is likely to need the help of an adventurer.
Tarkhald Crypt (and the Old North Wood) are to be redone at some point in the style of the newer “explorable areas” like Bentlimb Wood, etc. At that point there will be additions made to both places.
At some point in the future, Phak-Rur will be a place that you can travel to and explore, like other cities. No mention of upgrading The Murk.

It's also note-worthy to explain that I used the blade of the fox because I was stupid and hadn't figured out how to 'use' items from the drop-down battle menu... when I went to 'use' the gnarled wooden staff, I was equipping it. This only resulted in a faster death!
It's not surprising that The Murk was the last of the free quests to get finished... another thing I said about finally getting the kill was...
"The sense of satisfaction I got was only surpassed by the sense of stupidity I felt" (when I found out how easy the task would have been if I'd known how to 'use' items).
Still, the moment I beat the serpent guardian of Tepthog with the blade of the fox remains as my most satisfying Sryth moment.

Nowadays, you can equip the staff as your wielded weapon and beat the thing to death with it pretty easy.

I did quite a lot of exploring in Tarkhald while I was looking for glowing pumpkin seeds. Nothing new came up that I could see.

Thanks for the info. I always wondered if the GM ever did add anything to these explorables without announcing it!

Didn't Badstench start a thread on the old forum where people could post if they occasionally went and checked out these areas? Or am I making that up?

I went there after my post and didn't find anything either.
I did remember why it's not worth going there after the adventure though. I explored till my pack was full then went and sold the stuff. I got a total of 435 gold tokens for a full load.
Not my idea of a grind spot......

Yea he started one. I think he was bored waiting for everything to reset and went wandering around the kingdom....

I can't find a post in this thread where someone mentions 'piles of stones'. Could you quote the post you're referring to so we know what you're talking about?

Out of the corner of your eye you spot the tail end of a long green snake disappearing into the undergrowth at the edge of the trail.
i think that is new.
i'm finding the reference.
P.S. Can someone click on my scaled egg.

Nope. Found a thread in the old forum (http://shadowwolf47.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=srythhelp&action=display&thread=5119#83522) with that exact sighting back in June of this year, and people were talking about seeing green snakes there as far back as March, at least.
So where did you see piles of stones?

Hum. Layla seems to remember seeing that and the snake (it's probably the rod), but I don't think it does anything.

I remember seeing the piles of stone way back when Scout first did the Murk (summer 2008).
I seem to remember it was mentioned in the old forum that it's just basically flavor text and they don't do anything. I'm not positive but I think there was even speculation that the GM might have been setting the stage for something that never got finished.

Aren't the piles of stones always located at spots where you vanquished one of the moving stone statues? I had the impression they were just leftover rubble from the defeated statues.

There are other piles of stone not connected to the statues....
