Brand-new to Sryth, found it...well, I don't really remember where it was, but I saw some kind of banner ad about "Enjoy D&D? Click here to play an online, solo, text-based clone of it!" Or something to that effect. Anyway...

Long-time fantasy fan, played D&D in the late 80's with my high school buddies. Keep trying to find a local group to play with, but being an adult with responsibilities & a schedule makes it hard.

So I'm looking forward to playing Sryth. I tried the D&D Mini Adventures on Facebook, and it was fun for a little while. I like Sryth better, its so much more interactive.

Btw, my character is Jasper, and his starting stats are JAKKED!!! I was shocked to get such good rolls after just 2 or 3 tries...

...being that his stats are (almost) all so high, I decided he's a guy who knows how good he is, so he's a bit of a greedy fellow, wants to get all he can take while keeping himself alive. He's using Arcana, Diplomacy, Thievery, and Lore (I was initially hoping for a good Thief, but he's good all-around with these scores). Plus he studies Necromancy (which I'm starting to regret, because I thought he'd be able to control dead/undead enemies...so far he just summons them to help in battle).

Anyway, any comments or suggestions, I'm all ears.

Welcome to the game.

Like you, I'm also an ex D&Der who was looking for a similar game on the computer. My search ended with Sryth.

Welcome to the forum, too! Along with the wiki, you should find this a mine of information for all your queries, questions, complaints and conundrums. If you can't find the particular answer to your needs in the information already posted, just ask!

P.S: You're going to get a lot of helpful people tell you that your stats aren't as good as they could be. Don't feel put out by that... your stats are way better than my main character's, and they are just fine (unless you did actually want to roleplay Superman).

They're better than Reha's. And a pot load better than Alanne's first stats. (I chose the first stats that it was acceptable.) And those are really good for first time, first character. But for a second character, you want no stat lower than 18. And if you're not going to go AG, try to get all 19s and 20s. (It is possible, Tharvald did it.)

Welcome, ChaunceyK!

Necromancy's mainly used for calling up undead guys to fight for you, but there are one or two occasions where you get control over undead enemies. But mostly it's a battle power.

I managed 3 20s and 4 19s, which soon changed to 4 20s and 3 19s with the elixir of the torrent.

Oh, I would recommend restarting your character (and possibly deleting and re-rolling). And choosing (If you know you're not going to go AG) Horsemanship, Diplomacy, Thievery, Unarmed Combat OR (if you are going to go AG)Arcane, Diplomacy, Thievery, Unarmed Combatas your starting skills and either way Restoration as your starting power. Get Necromancy from The Wandering Undead startup scenario. Give the gem to the man and he'll give you Necromancy at level 1. This quest can be hard if you're not AG, but it is doable and well worth the rewards.

History lesson: Arcana is used to identify Items. The other way is to visit a sage. up until a few months ago, all the sages were AG only, so Arcana was a must for non AGers. Now, it's not as important as it once was.

EDIT: I didn't see Zmflavis' post until after I hit submit. The Elixer of the Torrent that he's talking about is from an AG only adventure.
@ Zmflavis: Alanne any Myrenne are trying to push a Nazi commander through a Shadow Path. Please tell me what happened.

oh, they failed. I would be more worried about the ogre with the big brand.

Sorry guys, but if you're going to be talking about a different thread, and one in which not many people participate, do you think you could keep it in that thread or use private messages?

Zmflavius, Dolli's right, but I know you're on.

@ ChaunceyK, Welcome to the game and the forum.

I don't like being helpful in that sense, nor am I putting you out; but if you want to play the game for a long time (or want to be a "greedy" fellow)... You're stats are too low. Use the XP calculator in the wiki to see what I mean.

Might be worth pointing out that Badstench's main character, Judge Fury, has been around a long time and is currently ranked #7, so he does know what he's talking about when he says that lower stats don't have to be a handicap! But yes, I'd suggest having a look at the xp calculator and then deciding whether you're bothered by the difference in the xp needed at the higher levels.

Wow, that's alot of replies. Nice to be welcomed aboard. :)

Yeah, I'm not terribly concerned with being completely maxxed...not looking to be #1, just looking to have some fun. I just figured that based on 2d10, to score 19x4, 17, 16, and 14 is pretty sweet, especially only rolling 2 or 3 times to get it.

Its a different age of gaming from what I grew up with in the 80's. Back then, you pretty much played what you got in D&D. At most the DM would let you move your initial scores to wherever you wanted them, or have you roll 4d6 & drop the lowest for each skill. These days, everything seems to be "find the best way to max everything." Not saying its better or worse, just different.

[EDIT]

Just for the hay of it, I decided to try creating a new character & re-rolling many many times. I'd say at least 80% of the time, the average is over 15. Seems like the dice are loaded to score higher. I don't feel so special anymore. ;)

And there's an AG only Item that boosts one of your stats that's 18 or lower by 2 or one of your stats that's at 19 by 1. And I think that there didn't use to be a re roll option.

(1) There was when I started playing (March or April '08). But perhaps you mean longer ago than that. (What we refer to around here as "ancient history".;))

(2) THANK YOU for correctly saying "didn't use to be" instead of "didn't used to be". Everybody gets it wrong nowadays; I see it in newspapers, magazines, books...

Repped for grammar.

Dangerous ground here but what the hey....

I'm bad or good  for forgetting that one myself and if I remember the rest correctly that mostly (only?) applies to use(d) following did/didn't/did not.

THat's very simmilar to Alanne's stats. 2 18s and the rest 19s and 20s. Although, I think she has more 20s than that.

EDIT: Yup. I looked it up and she has 3 20s, 2 19s, 1 18, and 1 18 that was raised to 20 by the EoT.

Might 19
Aura 19
Mind 20
Spirit 20
Luck 19

NICE! That's better than Alanne's stats. She started out with 2 18s. And if you hit a wall agin, you can always ask for help. I and many others will be glad to help you.
