View Full Version : Hit a Wall

I've been playing for a week or two now. Love the game but I'm getting a bit frustrated. Either things are way too easy (need 3s) or wtf-crazy-hard. Here's my character: Ayeohx (http://www.sryth.com/p/?1519c94xce1e59b14)

Maybe I just don't understand how to play. Besides the quickstone are there battle modifiers that I should be using? I have found Restoration to be occasionally helpful even though I don't heal a lot when it goes off. I know I've got a lot of skills and powers but I didn't really spend a lot of xp on them. A good bit of that comes from the "xx XP to all skills" after I complete important missions. Another thing is I can't seem to nudge my MR much higher. I've been sitting around the 70 range for a while now. Any suggestions?

Hitting a wall. That's what I'm good at. I'm a legendary wall-hitter.

To provide a general direction. I suggest:
1. Get all skills and powers (except those you can only acquire in proving grounds).
2. Do A Blizzard in the Hills.

If you need something more specific, try this:

Sounds good, thanks. I keep getting smacked down by the ogre(?) at the end of that mission. Guess I'll go die a few more times. :)

That quest is still too hard for you right now. Besides, you don't have enough skills and powers to "catch" its final rewards.

My route was:
Secret in stoneback hill -> Phantom assassin -> (16 skills and 10 powers) -> A blizzard in the hills

Thanks for the help but I think I'm going to quit playing for a while and wait for more content. It looks like I'm going to have to resort to grinding and that'll really cheapen the awesome experience that I've had with this game.

I just realized that you haven't acquired the shimmering silver longsword. You might want to try Runeskin series. It might be a bit difficult, but it's manageable I guess.

Alright Solitu, I'll take a crack at it. I was thinking of bailing but I've had a lot of fun so far. A lot of frustration; but definately more fun. Thanks for the help.

Ayeohx the link Solitu gave you to the startup guide is an excellent source of information, especially the links to Psychoadept's and Nearvirgo's/Joddelle's old forum posts. Since they are links on the old forum, here's a direct link to Psychoadept's character guide: http://docs.google.com/Doc?id=dcxqdwkm_30hh7q7n22

Also Joddelle's post is copy/pasted in the hints/tips.... thread on here which is another good source of info.

One other tip to consider - Adventurer Token's are refundable minus a gold fee. Early on the Fire Eye items from Tallys and the Goblin Blocker shield are nice low-end items that have that all important MR boost. Also having a Tallys's item in your inventory allows access to an adventure from the legendary adventurer. For a source of ATs the wiki has a page but it is spoilerish - http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Adventurer_tokens

And welcome to the forum.

Hmm. After checking out all of the data that you guys have given me I think I'm screwed. I don't have Adventurer tokens. Well, I have about 18 left (I still need to buy Unarmed). I bought that fabulous quickstone instead.

I've found that I cannot get the gear that I need to move on. I can't finish the Runeskin quest line nor can I finish any of the other 10 or so quest left in my Quest Finder.

Also, I cannot do the Captain Greenfen quest. I passed on it the first time and he's since sailed off into the sunset. Must have, because he won't come back to port.

I really hope I'm missing something. I appreciate the links to the older info but I was really wanting to run most of it without spoilers. Unfortunately I don't think that's possible. I think at this point it may be too late for my character anyways. If anyone has some advice to nudge me in the right direction I'd be a much happier individual. And no, I don't want to make a new character. :)

I don't know if by making a new character you include restarting this one but that's a possibility. Restarting will allow you to keep that character. If you've donated you'll need to contact the GM via email regarding the associated ATs. Also and I don't figure this applies but if you've gained any items/ATs/xp from limited run scenarios that have expired or contests/raffles you won't get them back.

If you restart you can hold off on the quickstone as it's bonuses back up to 90 days.

If you don't wanna restart....

One quest you may not have done is the Haunting at Durnsig which gives you access to one random (but manipulatable) piece of nice gear. The wiki page is very helpful but as usual somewhat spoilerish. I myself usually avoid spoilers but am thankful I had wiki/forum advice on that quest in particular. If you haven't done it you may want to and hazard a look at the wiki page as there is a definite short list Dragonwing Breastplate, Trick Ring, Warlord's Helm and Nimble items especially the boots of items as well as a save/reset strategy. Also the adventure finder does not list all content so it's possible there are some manageable ones that you may still have undone. Incidentally the adventurer log also doesn't list all completed adventures either.

Good luck.

What I'd do now if I were you: (no restarting, right?:o)

1. So you have a quickstone. Then I believe you can finish A Blizzard in The Hills. When facing the ogre, use your 43 Gating all the way. Use your quickstone when you're near death. (BEFORE doing this, I suggest buying Unarmed and Weaponry:staves with 4AT -> There's no other way to get them... and, 4AT doesn't really matter and you'll forget about it)

2. Level up your skills and powers so that you have "75-80 MR and some powers at 50+" and do Proving Grounds II and III (I'd also try IV maybe... with my quickstone active). (Nearly everyone needs the wiki here)

3. Now you have some AT to buy a good shield. With MR near 90 I think Runeskin is doable now.:) If not, do Haunting in Durnsig and/or Lift the box and/or Shattered Skull (Part II) to get more +MR items. After finishing Runeskin series you will have a load of items to bring up your MR and SP, and you can try Solundor's Grand Ring of Illusion. And I would say you're back on track then.

On a side note:
the current best item combination (without spending AT) (may change in the future)
Iakor's crown + Dragonwing Breastplate + (cloak of wanderer - you'll get it once you buy your house)

THANK YOU SOLITU!

I was starting to feel bad about taking Dragonwing.

And the early adventures in PGV give ATs.

And there are more ATs in game, you just have to do quests. Oh, and Runeskin (OK people, yell at me all you want. But read my reasoning first.) In the final rewards, take these 6 runes: 1 Arcana, 1 Necro, 1 Illusion, and 3 Eye runes. Eye runes give general XP. If you put the first 3 in together, you get a power, Shadow Magic. And once you have it, "purists" can do AS&P quests without loosing out on SM XP. It will also help you do PGV. Because that point is pretty far into the scenario.

You can do Runeskin at 80 mr. I did runeskin at 80 mr way back when.

You know, SP are a part of how easy it is for someone to do a quest. But, he can do Runeskin. Wiki link => Runeskin (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Runeskin)

Awesome! Thanks for the advice gang. In a bit here I'm going to try to take out the ogre in the Winter quest; see if my gating can make the difference.

Also, I'm impressed with the support on the forums here. Thanks everyone!

Correction: I'm off to get those missing skills. I need to make several thousand fast. Any suggestions?

Gold?

If you haven't done Stoneback Hill (which you're strong enough to do), Axepath and/or Yir-Tanon. They'll be a little tough but the drops are good. If you HAVE done Stoneback Hill, good money can be got from the Phantom Assassin quest. Though you'll probably still need to fill in with the replayables.

Assuming you've already sold all the item you can bare to part with

Try axepath and the temple near talinius - get as far as you can

Both battlegrounds challenges are good gold sources

Fogbrough exploration is also good if you can get to it

The loot you pick up (any armour, study or better weapons) sell at migspril first, anything that sells at 250 sell at gradok. Equip anything better then what you've already got.

Look for quests not featured on adventure finder, try the northwest wood.

Actually, you should sell anything with a true value of 500 or higher at Graldok.

Lets see getting AS&P (this is a general guide, not all of the stuff doesn't apply to you) MAJOR SPOILERS Early:

At start up, chose Arcana, Unarmed, Thievery, and Diplomacy for skills and Restoration for a power. Do The Wandering Undead and return the gem for Necromancy. Get to where you can do Lyrelocke Monastery then learn Weaponry from brother Kol. Join the AC as soon as you can and buy Weaponry: Staves (It's cheaper the less skills you have) (don't worry about the 8 ATs).

Skills:
Get Archery from Criveson's Fur & Fletching in Trithik. Go back to Lyrelocke and learn Bashing. Get Woodsmanship from Trithik random encounters. Do The Silver Crown in Port Halik and get Seamanship from the eye of the sea. Save and go to Bentlimb Wood and help the ancient dhormu Toribikk for Lore. Go to Tyfora's training yard and learn the rest of the weaponry sub-skills (If you don't have enough XP, get as many as you can and come back when you can buy more.).

Powers:
Do Stoneback Hill to unlock the Gray Circle. Get 5 powers (Anything except Elementalism) from the GC (if you don't have the XP, grind or do adventuers). Do both Murk quests (give back the cloak) and get 2 more powers (if you get Elementalism, quit without saving and try again). Do Daggerspire and get Elementalism. You now have AS&P except Shadow Magic. Shadow magic can be gotten from either Runeskin (take the runes of Arcana, Illusion, and Necromancy) or PGV (Automatic from The Eye of the Storm.) Phew, that was a long guide.

Thank you Solitu!!! I am destroying enemies with Gating!!! I've had the power but I only really used it for those "lookin cool" moments when I can teleport behind someone for a surprise. Wow, I really underestimated magic! I got a whole new game to play here... time to juice my spell power.

Also, when is magic better than whackin them with my good ol sword? And when I use magic do the stance buttons matter at all (as in "Defensive Casting")?

thingirl
08-21-2009, 12:04 AM
Well, magic roughly halves all combat XP, so I wouldn't use powers on an enemy that's 13+ or lower. But, if your QC cuts out and you're losing bad, then use powers.

As for the styles: Magic is unaffected by the combat styles. But I always cast in defensive mode because it affects the amount of damage you take. Unless I'm using SM, then I use either normal of aggressive.

I thought we'd established that using magic nullifies Aggressive/Defensive attacks

What thingirl says is about right: use magic in emergencies and vs super tough opponents. You're likely to run out of NV if you use it consistently for very long. Aggressive/Defensive doesn't matter with magic. It defaults to normal.

Also, you have enough Necromancy that it should be fairly effective, too. It gets a bonus against undead.

OK, thingirl, forget everything dad told you, forget everything dad told you, forget everything dad told you...

And I thought that was with SM. If you can't tell from the above rant at myself, dad told me to cast in defensive unless it's SM. But it's true that I don't cast SM in defensive.

Don't sweat it. Even though I know it doesn't matter, I still cast everything in defensive mode out of habit.
