In the phrase made famous by Dennis Hopper from the movie Speed, "What Do You Do?"

Judge Fury is in a melee against a Halgorim: The monster is sitting on 1 hit point, Judge Fury is sitting on 7.

The last click of the battle will be the death of someone. Options:

a) Brave it out and click as normal
b) Quickstone 20
c) Fry it's ass with an offensive power
d) Make sure of victory by employing the Wand of Dragonfire or the Finger of Dread
e) cast restoration on self to (hopefully) regain the upper hand, then smash it.
f) flee

What do you do?

In this example, Judge Fury survived to lick his wounds, but I've experienced a few occassions when the dice roll wasn't kind.

I'd use a QS 20 as those come pretty cheap and are a guaranteed victory in a situation like that.

I would, in order of preference:
use a QS20
use a BoP
use the WoD
use a QS heal
use an offensive power
use the FoD
Aggressive attack and pray

With the SP levels as you have them posted......

DO NOT USE THE FINGER!!!!

I assume that, you'll kill yourself in the process of killing your opponent. Both of you should end up with negative SP.

Especially if you have it leveled to max.

Has anyone actually ever went to negative SP using the finger in the same round that you killed your opponent? If so, what happens?

Good point, Spencer. On at least two ocassions, I've finished a melee and noticed my SP total has dropped into a negative. I assume that the "claw-back" saves me, but this begs the question: isn't dead... dead?

With the enemy sitting at 1 SP, the QS 20 is the least expensive, yet effective, method.

Depends on which Halgirom we're talking about. If it is the first random Halgirom, and I encountered it at the start, right after clearing the first building, then I'll use an Agressive attack and hope for the best. I will do the same if it is the second random Halgirom and I encountered it at the beginning of my Tarn visit. in ANY other case I'll use a Quicksotne 20.

I use 20s if the SP levels are as discribed. Although, he always manages to hit me with a special, so...

I don't quite get your logic shadowblack.
Early on like that is the perfect time to use a QS20, since you'll have all the minion fights in the buildings as a chance to regain them.

@thingirl: if you kill with the QS20, you'll never see the special or any other attack

I know, but I go a little too fast, and when I see that I need it, I usually fight another round by accident, that's when he gets me.

My logic is that since it is the start it's no big deal even if I get killed and so it's not worth wasting a stored 20. There's no guarantee that I'll get back the used 20 before I need it.

I just had a similar situation to the beginning scenario. I was in the Ice Cave and used QC on an FB (frozen brigand)...I think I was around 120 SP, but he knocked me down to 35 or so and then I hit aggressive and rolled a one twice in a row and went to 11. I had no QS 20's, no QS heals, though I did have a WOD or FOD. I chose to try Restoration and, of course, it fizzled, but since I rolled higher that I needed to hit, I was still at 11 SP. I also had a round of inactivity from the fizzle, so I was not sure if FOD or WOD would work. I just hit defensive and he knocked me down to 2....lucky roll I think and I finished him with Elementalism, which I should have used to begin with because I have a Fizzleband of Elementalism. It was the next to last room in the Ice Cave, but this time, Murphy did not reign and my stupidity did not kill me, just hurt me real, real bad.

Oof. (I should explain my acronyms more often.)

What about Fortification or Divination to (hopefully) "buy" you a few rounds.

Not by the Finger of Death, butI had it happen to me. I was playing in the Multiplayer Scenario when I launch an attack, but my enemy killed me. However, I got the "You have been forced to retreat" that happens after many rounds in the same round that I died. Because I recovered Stamina Points after the battle, I was put back in the positives, so I did not die, and still registered the damage to the creature.

I was incredibly grateful that the Gamemaster allowed that. (Or simply didn't put in a feature against it.)

That, I think, is a bug. It happens to all of us. Although the last time it happened to me was a long time ago.

Correct that's a known issue.
