Now that I've moved to London and am living on my own, I'm thinking of buying a Roomba to help with the cleaning up.

I know this is a long shot, but has anyone here had any experience with how well they actually clean?

I haven't used it. But did your mother teach you how to use a regular vacuum? It's probably a lot cheaper.

The price difference is actually not that much. A Roomba can be had for 200 GBP. Well worth it if it even saves me 20 hours of effort over its life.

However, my main reason for buying one would simply be the coolness factor of having a robot slave to clean for me. :p

I agree. Do you have a cat? I did some googling, and found sevral youtube videos of cats on roombas.

Nope, no pets.

I have an aunt that has one and she likes it.

I've gone ahead and ordered it, more updates to be posted on delivery. (2-3 working days)

Are you now using the Roomba? I'd love to know if they work. Also, does anyone know if they do wood floors?

I use a Roomba.

If you are good about keeping cords and things off the floor, I find they work quite well. You may find that you still want to vacuum every once in a great while.

Good to know, thanks! Is that on carpet or a hard floor?

That is on a fairly thin carpet. I don't tend to use my Roomba on hard floors, not really sure how well it would hold up there.

Ive never heard of a roomba... New Zealand might get a demo model within the next 10 or so years.

But you'll have to excuse me. I just bought a new TV... they bring them out with colour pictures now! It's so exciting!

Hopefully it's a digital TV, as the CRT ones are going out of fashion. ;)

What's CRT? You knew I would say that, didn't you.

Cathode ray tube.

CRT = Cathode Ray Tube. Analog TVs and old computer moniters all used to be CRT, but that's phasing out with High-Definition monitors and TVs.

OK, what's "Cathode Ray Tube"?

Basically, it's what you get in chunky monitors and TV sets, as opposed to flat screen.

I think my TV and one of the monitors (we have 3 comps) are CRT.

Best of luck Havoc! I don't have much advice on the roomba, but I lived in London a few years ago and absolutely loved it. I'm quite jealous!

Lol......

For my fellow older "forumers"....

I remember going to the drugstore and using the tube tester.

When/if it breaks, as far as working on it yourself - solid state inhales sharply. Of course on those old TVs in particular if you forgot to discharge that ole AC and "got into it" it could inhale mega-sharply. ;)

Back to the roomba, I have no personal experience but I imagine they would work better on hardwood, tile, linoleum and any most any non-carpeted floor. I imagine their deep carpet cleaning ability is limited. The potential drawback on real hardwood especially would be possible scratching by brushes, wheels or debris they may pick up on the wheels/brushes (grit/gravel/etc...).

I remember having to go to the store with my parents and watching while my dad tested many tubes to find the one that was bad.

Never a fun trip to town.......

Oh, man, talk about a blast from the past! I had totally forgotten that one of the stores near us used to have one of those tube testers when I was a kid, but that picture brought it all back in a flash.

Never got to actually use it, or watch anyone using it, but I spent a lot of time just admiring its complexity.
