View Full Version : Randomness Rant

Is it just me, or does anyone else get fed up when so many things depend on random events? I understand issues of replayability, especially when people want to "grind", but right at this moment, until the next segment of Proving Grounds goes live, any new thing for my character depends on chance, and it seems the random rolls hate me. After literally hundreds of explorations of Fogbough outer wood, I have fought Inzelia dozens of times--once three times in the same session of 50 explorations, but have yet to encounter Zibduril at all, so no chance of getting Tallys' third pouch.

Since getting the Bowl of Blood, I have not had a single portal appear in the Lords of Ogredom challenge. Since I don't really have time to run that more than once a day, it looks like its going to be a long (and frankly, boring) haul to get the ten gems at this rate.

I thought the 30+ visits to the Ice Troll lair to get the Ice Shield was excessive--so I haven't done it yet with my second character--but at least there was an end in sight and a certain completion to it.

I MUCH prefer puzzles or scripted adventures over random events. I realize those are harder to write and are less repeatable, however, I'm willing to wait for good content. Isn't there some way to write a randomness algorithm that would check whether or not a certain event has occurred or not, and then lower the odds if it hasn't occurred within a reasonable number of attempts?

I'll say it here too. GAAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!! Now, with that out of the way, yes it would be hard, but rely nice if the GM could put in a checker like you described.

Welcome to the Flock! You're now an aspiring member of the "Randomness Haters Club"! Only membership precondition for entry is to roll a D100 die 1000 times and try and get 20 rolls of 100 :) .

I'm firmly of the opposite camp; that random occurrences are a good thing. I've posted about this before.

In short, randomness in the case of events that are required to finish a particular scenario or item increase the longevity of adventures. The satisfaction once achieved, is more than completing an adventure in the span of one playing session.

Wax on, wax off.

Patience is a virtue.

Patience is a virtue.

A virtue which most gamers are a touch short on. Which is why they (we/I) are gamers in the first place.

(We're not waiting around for the next entertaining moment when we can entertain ourselves...)

But I do agree with your general reason for wanting to keep the randomness in there... (but I've also already completed all of fogbough, lords of ogredom, etc. so I am tainted (or biased, whatever)...)

Arrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...... :)

Nearly finished with the Outer Wood with all my secondaries except for a few totems for two of them which is to be expected. My rant is for a third that has yet to find 'A Rising Fortress' despite NUMEROUS exploration cycles.

Deep breaths...... lol.

Well at least I feel better..... considering I'm just starting the gem hunt for the Bowl of Blood for the secondaries the potential for more posts in this thread by yours truly probably isn't random. ;)

Considering how much time wasted (eer...spent) on the new adventures, I'm not even sure when I'll get around to doing them for my secondaries.

All complaining aside ;) I'm making decent progress at 6 jewels for my Bowl of Blood.

Sympathy! I know people have been stuck there for days before they get what they want.
