Dear Sir

Last night I had a dream. The dream suggested I should follow up on my thoughts of enrolling in your school of magic.

This thought has been with me for many months, for I have been at a loss to explain unexplained occurrences which have befallen me.

My mother is convinced that I have been touched by a demon. My father despairs of my inability to grasp simple blacksmithing techniques. He has called me "stupid" on more than one occassion. Such tutors as my parents could afford all called me "incalculable". I have no idea what that means, but their meaning was clear.... They did not want to tutor me.

My friends (the few I had) have distanced me after I wished a cat back to life, and it happened.

Sometimes, I visualise not being wet in a rainstorm, and I remain dry. Sometimes, I think certain things wouldn't have happened, and I am astounded when other people have no memory of those things.

I have started to think my mother is right; I am a demon without knowing it.

But, I don't feel like a demon. My Aunty doesn't think I'm a demon, either. She says I have ability of the mind... the power to see beyond reality. It was she who suggested I send an application to enrol as a student at your school.

I have filled out the application form to the best of my ability, but do not have any letters of recommendation to attach. I am the son of a blacksmith and tutored to a minimal degree.

Truly, I hold no aspirations that you will answer this letter, but i hope you do.

Sincerely yours,
Imsha Thred

Dear Imsha,

Thankyou for your letter of application. This was passed to me by a very astute secretary who saw some interesting notations in your approach. I concur with her appraisal, and am interested in meeting with you.

But, a few questions first, if you please.

1) Your letter of application was written with word-perfect language. Did you pen this?

2) How old are you?

3) Have you had any other dreams which have prompted you to act in the manner of applying to the School of Magic?

Regards
Mage Brandon

Dear Mister Mage Brandon,

I received your letter with some excitement, but I must inform you that my education does not extend to lettering. My good Aunty is transcribing my words to parchment, and rephrasing much of what I speak so that it seems civil.

I am 19 years of age.

I have had many dreams... some were just dreams... some were portentous, like when I dreamed my father would score a handsome contract to make metal door hinges. He did so two weeks later.

Furthermore, I am eager to improve my lot in life, and toward this I would be willing to be studious in my approach to learning.

Greatfully yours,
Imsha Thred

Thankyou for your reply.

Unfortunately, your age is a little above our normal standard of acceptance. Magic is a demanding discipline that requires the shaping of minds at a young age, much as a piano player must become a true maestro of his instrument.

Your "gift" of foresight is a blessing, and you shouldn't ignore it, but I am certain that schooling in the arts of magic will NOT enhance that ability any further.

I wish you well on any future endeavours.

Sincerely yours,
Mage Brandon

Dear Sir

I was greatly dismayed to receive your rejection to my application.

It may interest you to know that I had another dream last night; I dreamed of a man in grey robes... his throat was slit from jugular to frozen smile.

As you say, dreams are not always portentous, but this dream seemed very real to me.

Regardless, my Aunty was not very impressed by your rejection. She has introduced me to another mage who has looked more kindly on my ability, and I have enrolled in the School of Necromancy.

I offer this letter merely to warn you about my dream.

Regards,
Ishma Thred

Mage Brandon threw the letter into the flames, there to be consumed by fire.

"The boy has gumption, I'll give him that," he said to his secretary.

"Erm, sir?"

"Yes? what is it, Mary?"

"I took the liberty, sir, of doing a background check on this Imsha Thred. I think you should look at the papers".

Mage Brandon cast his eye over the documents.

"There is nothing here I don't already know. Imsha Thred, son of a blacksmith, citizen of Talinus, under-achieved at learning, no criminal convictions. Why should this interest me, Mary?"

"The part where he lists living relatives, sir.... do you notice a particular name?"

Mage Brandon perused the document again. After a few seconds, his indrawn breath was audible.

"This one: Yillura! By the gods, he doesn't mean....."?

Answered Mary, "Yaluria Thred, sir. otherwise known as Yillura of Highgate!

Dear sir

I was overjoyed to receive your latest communique, and can assure you that I will present myself to The Grey Circle school of education at the appointed time.

My Aunt Yillura is likewise overjoyed, and she has told all her friends of your wise decision.

Incidentally, I had another dream last night.... you were about to be murdered, but an angelic hand stayed the blade. I was extremely gratified by this.

Yours with anticipation
Imsha Thred

The climax to this story was explained by the naming of Imsha's aunty. if you didn't get it, Yillura of Highgate is/was one of The Phantom Assassin's lieutenants. Mage Brandon recognized this and promptly signed the admittance papers.

Like real life, it's not always what you know, but who you know that gets you employed.

Haha, thanks for the explanation, I'd totally forgotten who Yillura of Highgate was.

Now I'm trying to decide whether Imsha was deliberately mentioning his aunt...

Probably. Who knows, other than Badstench?

From the wording of the last letter or two from the kid, I felt it was probably deliberate, but I wasn't positive. Then I went back and reread the part where the kid mentions his dear Aunty is transcribing and rewording the letters for him. So it wasn't the kid making those veiled threats at all, it was Aunt Yillura herself. D'oh!

So I'm positive now the threats were intentional, but doubt that they came from the kid. He may not even know Aunty Yillura is an assassin, if he's as dumb as he sounds...

Goos point. "I" probably means Aunty Yillura.
