MOD EDIT/NOTE: This is a thread covering both Adventurer Appreciation Months. Adventurer Appreciation Month 2009 is covered through post number 206. 2010's version starts with post number 207 (http://srythforum.com/showthread.php?p=39349#post39349) more or less as actual details (http://srythforum.com/showthread.php?p=39770#post39770) don't show up till after that post number and continue through post number 420. Thread for AAM 2011 at http://www.srythforum.com/showthread.php?t=1785 Here's the AAM wiki page, http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/AAM
Original and unaltered post follows.
A mysterious, masked man is currently lurking in Blade Square in Trithik.
Approach a masked man at the edge of the square...
September is Adventurer Appreciation Month!
Visit the masked man for a special, limited-time bonus!
This what I got.
AT + 16 You've acquired 16 Adventurer Tokens.
XP +8,192 You've been awarded a total of 8,192 Experience...
8,192 xp applied to general...
XP +1,024 You've been awarded 1,024 Experience...

That's almost cheeting.
The masked man loitering at the edge of the quadrangle looks up as you approach. He adjusts the red and white painted wooden mask that covers his face and bows deeply.
"A pleasure it is to see you, Alanne," he says in a raspy voice. "You will, I trust, excuse the necessity of this mask. Concealment of my identity is, unfortunately, required. You'll be interested to know that I have something for you."
The man hands you a small leather pouch.
You promptly open the pouch and peer inside.
* Please continue...
Much to your surprise, the pouch contains a quantity of Adventurer Tokens!
AT + 16 You've acquired 16 Adventurer Tokens.
"There's something else in there, too," says the masked man, motioning with his finger for you to look back into the pouch.
Following his directive, you again peer into the pouch and discover a small red gem. The gem emits a faint reddish glow. You immediately reach in and take hold of the gem and are swiftly overcome by a strange sensation...
* Please continue...
XP +8,192 You've been awarded a total of 8,192 Experience...
8,192 xp applied to general...
XP +1,024 You've been awarded 1,024 Experience...
1024 xp applied to All Skills and Powers...
"Well, then," says the masked stranger as the sensation subsides, "I hope you'll find that this small token of my appreciation was worth your trek to Blade Square. Now, if you'll be so kind as to excuse me, I truly must be on my way. If you run into any other adventurers, let them know that they'll find me here from time to time -- but only for the next small while."
You ask the masked man who he is and why he gave you the pouch and its valuable contents.
"All right, if there's nothing else," he says, ignoring your inquiry. "Good luck on your adventures, Alanne!"
With that, he turns and shuffles off across the teeming square and is soon lost from sight.
September 2009 is Adventurer Appreciation Month
Thank you for playing and supporting Sryth!
* Please continue... Verry nice. 16 ATs and 8192 gen. and 1024 AS&P
I't probably a one time event. But if it isn't and it decreases over time (or just takes out the ATs) like the fountian in Tarn... I'm guessing he's Tallys. If not Tallys, then Zumryn.

9/8/09 - Adventurer Appreciation Month Continues
Friday (9/11) will be the last day to encounter the masked stranger in Blade Square in Trithik and receive his valuable gift.
Saturday (9/12),however, will be first day you'll be able to encounter the same masked stranger in Tryndmoor and receive yet another mark of his appreciation -- this time in the form of a special item you'll want to save for those occasions when you'll truly need its extraordinary powers...

Which technically means, not to seem nitpicky, that the update actually doesn't go live until the day after he says it will, if we're going by his time zone. LOL. Even though it goes live on, say, September ith in the case of Heir to the Flame, in my time zone, in other parts of the country it's already the 10th. Wanderer's Bell (Use)
* Class: Misc
* Encumbrance: 0
This small, triangular iron bell, its three sides bearing engravings of different phases of the moon, is known as the "Wanderer's Bell".
Little is known about this bell, including how it obtained its rather cryptic name.
What is known, however, is that by ringing the bell during combat, the power contained within the ancient artifact will be unleashed...much to the grave misfortune of your enemies.
The bell currently has 4 uses remaining.
To use the bell, select it from the pull-down item menu during combat, before clicking on an attack type for the next round.
Please Note: As displayed above, the bell has only a finite number of uses. Once these uses have been exhausted, it will no longer function. It's not known if the bell has the potential to be recharged.
XP Reward: 4096 General and 1024 to AS&P

You seance? Don't you mean sense? And if it's going to be a multiplayer scenario that recharges the bell, we've got two that don't really yield anything, so we ought to do something more with them instead of adding another new one. Wurmwrit's farm (sp?) and Talderus Redborn. That's why I haven't visited either one of them in months. Well that's not entirely true. I did pay a visit to Talderus, but only to test the bell's power. Quite impressive. I'll probably end up holding onto it to use in the more difficult PG scenarios.

I'm guessing that he will, someday, otherwise why mention it and add a "loose end" to the game that in reality isn't?
He'll probably just make us wait awhile before adding it. Maybe make a Christmas special or something along those lines. Who knows, maybe the GM hasn't figured out the details yet. Maybe he just wanted to give us something special for his birthday.

She is right though. Armor is spelled Armour in the UK. I've noticed that Sryth tends to use a lot of UK spellings. As for the masked fellow, I won't deny that I do hope y'all are right and we'll see him again before the month is over. And no, I don't actually have a southern accent, although those are somewhat common in Idaho. But honestly I don't see what else the GM could possibly think of to give us. He's already given us Adv Tokens, EXP and an awesomel powerful item that we'll hopefully be able to recharge, even if at a price. Exactly. Because I'll be honest. I don't actually remember him specifically saying this would last the ENTIRE month. But I agree with those who suggest Marks of Valour, especially since Marissa wasn't able to get that first one from Tallys.

A couple years ago, the GM decided that as a Christmas bonus, he would introduce a special type of armor called a "mark", which basically was a tattoo only you could see. It was called the Mark of Valour and it gave you something like +2 MR, +1 SP, or something like that. I know Elrond mentioned that he had one. Anyhow, since then, no other Marks have been introduced and it has not been possible to get the Mark of Valour if you weren't around then.

Ahh. Me want Mark.
That's not entirely true. It was actually possible to get the mark for some months, till sometime late last year as I recall. The adventure was in Trithik and it was called And to all a good Night. Tallys showed up, gave us an orb that gave us some general and specific XP, a quantity of Adventurer TOkens based on how much that character had donated *although that particular part only applied to the initial playthrough of the adventure on Christmas Day), and the Mark of Valour. You could still play through the adventure for some months afterward but as I recall you only got 24 Adv TOkens. My first character to play through it, Charisma, got something in the neighborhood of 150 tokens from him because I'd donated over the last year. Then for a while you could also get a special Halloween bonus from the Grinning Jack-o-Lantern if you visited Wurmwrit's farm. Again, you could get that one for quite a long time after the scenario initially went live. That one consisted of some general and specific EXP, 10K in gold and 16 or 24 Adv Tokens.
Getting back on the topic though I definitely hope it's another Mark of Valour.

Like most of us, I'me sure, I'm keeping the wanderer's bell in my back pocket, for use only in the case of dire misfortune. That said, I happen to have started a second character, who immediately grabbed the bell, and ran with it.
Here's what he's come up with so far...
The bell does between 232 and 350+ damage per ring, AND it stuns the opponent for between 2 to 7 rounds. He discovered this by going to Tarn, as a newbie, under 65Mr, and killing the Demon there, for the Band of Grujalsa.
It took several attempts to kill said demon, with only one ring of the bell, but, luckily, if you really need to, you can ring it more than once in the same combat. In fact, you can ring it twice, back to back, with no reset time.
The sampling was only 8 or 10 runs at the demon, so the point values are questionable, but, I hope y'all find this little bit of information useful, and I have to admit, that I laughed quite a bit at the idea of a Noob strolling up to a demon, and just slaughtering her...

Nice post Sarcast67, repped for the info.
It seems the possibility of recharging the bell may be less then initially thought after reading those awesome results, especially the back to back rings. Although I'm not dismissing the possibility of recharging it I'm guessing IF it is rechargeable it'll be awhile before that is possible.
Also whatever criteria is used to recharge it is bound to be correspondingly daunting as the bell's results.
On another note has anyone rang the bell dry so to speak to see what happens? Perhaps there will be recharge "instructions" after doing so? I haven't even done an experimental ring - yet that is. However, I'd be surprised if a few of the folks that routinely test things haven't done so and I recall there being some posts regarding its ringing - just not using all the charges.

I've actually been doing that for at least three years, well since I found out through trial and error that an MR of just 80+ was enough to wipe the floor with him. Now Rokmokkara is a different story. For the first fight you'll be ok if you can get your MR up into the 120's, which is fairly easy. But when he challenges you to the second, optional fight even an MR in the 160's and you were still "Staring into the eyes of death." So whatever his faults I have no trouble believing Rokkmokara could kick Illiok's arse anyday.

The question was asked if anyone had exhausted all four uses of the bell. The answer is yes, and the description of the bell in the equipment menu does not change, the bell is simply no longer useful. On the plus side, it doesn't disintegrate, or anything, so maybe it will become rechargeable at a later date.
If anyone else wants to experiment with it, just remember to quit without save, and you'll have it back, good as new.

I took it to the hatted stranger in Tryndmoor.
Even with all four USEs, he was still sitting at 80% (after around 1,200 damage)
The stun works on him though. So I imagine a hero with a strong enough Power could take the stranger down.
And I had the stun effect last for 9 rounds at least once.
ALSO -- this is expected and probably already known in regards to other items of this sort, but -- in PG, if you use it, and quit without saving (i.e. with the intent of recording a Victory, but without losing the charge), you DO still LOSE the charge. (You also keep all the loot you picked up)
So don't use it in PG unless you have to.
I felt bad at furst, but someone had to test that out.

Exactly (which is why I said I feel "bad" for trying, since if it worked it would've been cheating).
For the record, if the cheat had worked, I had intended to use the stolen charge on a fodder battle (like vs a cave goblin in "explore the realms at random").

I agree; I haven't seen "a body" used in that sense since the song "Coming through the Rye." :)
The lyrics I learned as a kid:
If a body meet a body

Very nice rewards. I was seriously HOPING that the masked man's appearance in Kolnia might have something to do with a formerly rusty longsword. VERY nice and generous gifting by the GM this month.
I had the same thought too. :) But if it did, it would be problematic for people who missed out on the Adventurer's Appreciation awards.

I do wish the pumpkin treat was still available though since like so many other items the jack-o-lantern is undroppable even after it's served its purpose. Even the black claw of the Voren-Thul, which served no purpose beyond revealing to you the nature of the enemy you faced, can't be dropped or stored. And while it's true they don't actually encumber you it's still irritating having them there when you're scroling through your items looking for something specific.

9/6/10 - Adventurer Appreciation Month
September is, for the second consecutive year, declared to be 'Adventurer Appreciation Month' in the world of Sryth.
To express our profound appreciation for all the brave and illustrious adventurers whose dedication and support is the cornerstone of Sryth, a mysterious, masked man will be making random appearances throughout Tysa.
This mysterious man's appearances will be announced both in the main announcements section and in the Adventure Finder.
Please be sure to pay him a visit whenever and wherever he happens to appear.

Also, no masked man yet, but odds are he'll show up tomorrow.

No Texty, just because tokens are being handed out doesn't bean the TOA is closer. They've been handed out several times in the past. My prediction is holding true on the TOA. When people wanted predictions after it was susposed to have come out on Feb 14th, and it didn't it was asked how long it would take to come out mine was a year if we were lucky. Wwll it's been 7 months and counting.

Probably a combination of ATs, EXP and, we can hope, a recharge of the Wanderer's Bell. And I'm sort of hoping for a lifetime's supply of Spiced Root Wine since as with the bell we still have the bottle after it's empty. Maybe we could pay a fee in gold to have ten fresh mouthfuls added or base the fee on how mch we have currently. So it could be, say ten K gold for a full recharge, give or take a thousand depending on how much we have left at te time. So if we had one swallow left we'd only pay 9000 gold. That would make it harder for folks who don't have a million gold ling around to abuse it. And I much prefer a charge in gold since it's almost totally useless at the moment since we have access to Tallys' Trading Post even if not always to his best gear.
Elrond
09-07-2010, 03:07 AM
I don't have the bell or wine bottle as Elrohir was born after their introduction to the game. And prior to that, Elendil never used them. So, my preference remains AT's.

I'm thinking that there were announcements, although I had just started playing around mid-September and did not notice them. I happened to run across the masked stranger by pure luck when I was just wandering around the map and went into Tryndmoor for the first time (and the award was a pleasant surprise). After that I recall an announcement that said he was back in Trithik for another appearance. I don't recall it being in the Adventure Finder though.

Which would seem to indicate that it's just not live yet. As for the reward itself I don't doubt that ATs will be part of it. They were last year. Then we got EXP and if memory serves the Wanderer's Bell came last. I won't complain about ATs either, especially if the Tome does turn out to be in the near future.

So if I've read the news correctly it means we'll be able to encounter him once per day in a new location each time and get some sort of reward from each visit? This is definitely a departure from last year, since then I seem to recall him appearing and hanging around in a given location for a few days and each character could only encounter him once at each locale.

I've read it a few times and that's the way I read it as well. IF so a definite change from last year which was like you remember. There was three encounters total last year so I'm really wondering about things.
And iirc last year Kolnia was one of the locales and it was prior to its being razed.
I'm still hesitant to get wound up about a daily prize just because it's my nature. Thankfully and hopefully we won't have long to wait.

I am assuming that the masked stranger may not make an appearance today, or does the GM sometime have updates go live at a late stage in the day/evening?
i.e. I wasn't going to log in later, but as it's a once per day reward system I was thinking I may miss out if I don't. What do others reckon?

Well it could be anytime. Normally his releases are later in the day server time which is Eastern US/GMT -4:00.
They used to come out at around 10 PM pretty consistently then awhile back it seemed to change to Midnight.
However lately they've come out at any/all times so anytime would be my guess.
Boy that was a lot of help in narrowing it down eh?

I'm pretty sure you CAN'T miss out. The GM is aware that he has players from different time zones, so I doubt he would introduce an event that favors players from certain time zones while players from other times zones could miss out.
Of course, this is just my opinion and we won't know for a few more hours.

Again, pure speculation here. But, I am almost certain, that even if it were a daily encounter, you would be able to do it anytime in a set 24 hour period, mainly for the fairness and the time zone reason given by SB above.

My understanding of "once per day" is anytime during the day. And that would be different from "every 24 hours" as is the case with the Ice Troll.

I think I agree with billydakid, maybe get something in the first encounter, then get the remainder of GIFT at the end, probably cumulative, based on each daily encounter. Probably do not want to miss a day.
However I am usually wrong on these sort of things, at any rate I am sure it will be well worth the daily encounters.

According to the adventure finder: A masked man has been spotted lurking in and around Tryndmoor...
At least for now. I'm off to seek him.

09-13-2010, 02:25 AM
Without introducing himself (not that you expected him to), the stranger begins speaking, but his words, muffled by the thick, green cloth mask that covers his face, emerge as little more than a garbled string of unintelligible sounds.
Before you can ask him to repeat himself, the man reaches up and adjusts his mask.
"Greetings, Kaizer," he says, his voice somewhat more clear, though still muffled. "Here, take this and keep it safe. I will soon have the rest of them for you."
Much to your surprise, he hands you a small, black stone cube.
ITEM You've acquired: Black Stone Cube
You ask the man what purpose the cube serves. He quickly replies, but his softly-spoken words are horribly muffled by the green cloth mask that covers his face.
Immediately sensing that you haven't understood a single word, he reaches up and makes a few adjustments to the mask.
"Never mind about that," he says. "The less time spent talking about the cubes, the better off we'll be. Just visit me again tomorrow. I hope to have something else for you by then. This is only the beginning, my adventurous friend."
Realizing that you're not about to get any additional information from him, you bid the masked stranger farewell and promise to pay him a visit tomorrow.
You turn to leave, but the masked man suddenly steps forward and places his hand on your shoulder. A series of painful jolts surge through your body, leaving you breathless and light-headed.
As the masked man withdraws his hand and steps back and your head clears, you feel somehow...different.
XP +512 You've been awarded a total of 512 Experience...
512 xp applied to general...
XP +256 You've been awarded 256 Experience...
256 xp applied to All Skills and Powers...
"There, I almost forgot that part! I do apologize for the discomfort," he says, his muffled voice barely intelligible. "I'm not as adept at that as I might be. I'll see you tomorrow, Kaizer, and not before. We must remain as inconspicuous as possible, lest our acquaintance become known...and our mission endangered...as I'm sure you well understand."
With that, wondering how a man wearing a green mask can hope to remain inconspicuous, you turn and prepare to set off on your way.
After taking only a few steps, you glance back over your shoulder, only to discover that there is no longer any sign of the green-masked stranger.
Be sure to seek out the masked stranger again tomorrow. He may be in another spot. The Adventure Finder will always detail his current location.
