This was inspired by Thingirl's post about shadow clones.

Here's how it would work:

When you cast Illusion you create up to 5 copies of yourself. You cast 1 copy for each 20 levels of mastery, and have a 5% chance of casting 1 more for each additional level. So, a level 70 caster would have a 50% chance of casting 4 copies and 50% of just 3. A level 75 caster would have a 75% chance of casting 4, and a 25% chance of casting 3.
If you already had illusions in play, casting Illusion dispels them, and recasts.
Each turn, the enemy has an equal chance of striking any of the copies, or the original you. So, if you had 4 copies, there would be a 20% chance of being struck yourself, and an 80% chance that a copy is hit.
If a copy is hit, it gets dispelled, leaving one less. If you are hit, you take damage as normal, and all your copies get dispelled.

I'm not sure how tough this would be to code, but it would certainly add in a little variety, and make Illusion a useful combat power.

EDIT: On doing the math,
Number of Copies|Expected turns of protection
-1|-0.5
-2|-1
-3|-1.5
-4|-2
-5|-2.5

Blessings of Protection provide 2-3 turns of protection. So it's not necessarily better than Blessings, and is thus not overpowered. Basically, maxed out Illusion will work like a more random version of blessings (greater risk, greater possible reward) that costs NV to use, instead of gold.

Honestly, I was sort of kidding and getting a Naruto reference in.

That is actually a very good idea. Now, if it allows us to use Rasengan, that would be both copyright infringement and Waaaaaaaaaay overpowered.

I think this would be great to have in the game. That is if it would not be to hard for the GM or take to long to get it to work.

I like the idea.

Not to save gold but to make the power more D&D like and useful.

As it is, except for "power checks", I rarely use it.

The only thing I would change is the Expected Turns of Protection. I don't think with the investment in training, that 1-5 turns would be out of the question.

If you look at the other powers after they are trained up, you can cause a lot of damage with them so why not a little more protection than you get from a blessing?

You're right. Especially coz you lose one turn in simply casting Illusion.

What are the other opinions on balance? Once we have some kind of a consensus, I'll sedn in the idea to the GM.

What he said! (only with more 'o's) ;)

Seams like everyone is having trouble typing today. Someone forgot a "d" and then SMV forgot an "o".

Maybe levels 1-20 you get 1, then 3 on 40, 4 on 60, 5 on 80, and 6 on 100.

Oh! Mirror Image! (an old and faithful D&D spell)
I like this idea a lot, and it makes illusion actually useful. repped Havoc.

Question: should it be resistible? In my opinion, it should. A magic-resistant foe would perceive the illusory doubles for what they were, and focus his attacks on you.

Yes, it should.

Maybe the Illusion power gives you two options in combat. Illusion and Illusion: Defense.

As for the resistance. I don't know. It actually seems like Illusions in Sryth are made out of Nevernal Energy, not just a trick of the mind. Even a magic-resistant foe would not be able to see through it. The resistance affects their being, not outside effects that could influence it. I don't think that their eyesight is covered by magic protection. (Unless it's a Beholder, but those don't exist in this game.) If you remember, though. Some enemies have Anti-magic auras, instead of magic resistance. This can even prevent non-affecting magic. Obviously, Illusions of any kind wouldn't work very well at that point, but I don't think magic resistance would cover that.

Now that would be a very intriguing - and new - feature to the game. Different magical effects when you use a power and click 'defensive', 'normal', or 'aggressive'

very cool
