View Full Version : Blizzard rescue/Package collecting

I am trying to collect the 20 packages for Rengol near Hawklor. At the same time I was also rescuing the villagers caught in the blizzard. I have collected 19 of the 20 packages and rescued 11 of the 12 villagers but every time I attempt to explore for more packages all I seem to get is either a random encounter or a reference to the cave with the ogre within. The thing is, that ogre is black for me and I am hopelessly outgunned. I am attempting to explore for just the last package but cannot seem to get any result except the cave reference or said random encounter. Do I need to just keep exploring, ignoring the reference until I get a "package option"? Or is this a futile venture. I've spent the last 3 hours trying to tie it up and it seems a bit annoying to have to give up now.

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

yes, to rescue the 12th villager and get the 20th package you must kill the ogre. However, just because the ogre is 18+ to hit for you does not mean you are hopelessly outgunned. There are many ways to kill a monster, but at your level, I would advise a 30+ power.

You have to go to the cave for the last package and the last villager. They can not be found by wandering in search. That's just how it is.

Try using a power to combat the ogre

EDIT: dang, ninja'd

Or come back later when your MR is higher. If you exit Blizzard, you don't lose your progress unless you don't save.

The last package is tied to the ogre. What level are your powers? I'd recommend you'd buy some Blessings of Protection (500 gold a piece, 3 max) from the Cathedral in Talinus, they protect you for 2-3 rounds from damage. If you have a decently leveled power you should be able to beat him with that.

If not, you might just be too low a level to do the quest. Wrap some other stuff up and come back later, you might be able to beat him if you just get another 10 MR.

By power, what are you meaning exactly? All I have available is Divination. Is this what you are referring to? (noob, sorry)

Destruction would be ideal, as it's the highest damaging against targets with no resistance. The thing about powers is that they do damage no matter what you roll. I'd recommend checking this (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Powers) wiki page for ways to acquire new powers.

e: And for the record, Divination is generally not a very good one. It has uses outside of combat, mostly to confirm suspicions, but combat powers should in my mind always take priority.

Alright then, I was worried the quest would be forfeit if I left and came back. I'm glad it isn't. I'll have to go and power for a bit it seems. Thanks for ALL of your suggestions. They are truly apreciated. Nice community here.

That was a quick response =).

Yes, Divination is one of the powers, and it could actually drop the MR required to hit an opponent.

But you really should have done the "wandering dead" startup scenario, for reasons thingirl is sure to post at you in a spoiler.

A good combat power is Necromancy/ Elementalism/ Gateing/ Destruction (Careful, this can be resisted). Necromancy can be gotten from the wandering undead scenario. You can get 2 powers from the murk quest, one chosen, one random. (take Ethuil's hand and give the cloak back). All powers except Necromany and Shadow Magic can be learned from the Grey Circle if you have completed Stoneback Hill.

EDIT: I type really slow. The last thing I read before answering was "What is a power?"

A power here refers to any offensive power used in combat.

The offensive powers are:
Telekinesis
Illusion
Necromancy
Destruction
Gating
Elementalism

The four in bold are the most recommended ones, as if my memory serves me right, Telekinesis and Illusion's damage are subpar.

Restoration heals you in combat though its effect is generally to negligible to be of any use.

Conjuration does nothing.

Fortification reduces damage though in an 18+ fight, it's relatively useless unless used in conjunction with another power.

Divination reduces enemy MR. Since the ogre is 18+, you probably won't be able to reduce it enough to kill it though.

edit: argh, ninja'd, shouldn't have taken so long.

Restoration is pretty useful outside of combat though. It also leads to some heartwarming quest resolutions.

LOL.

No problem. I'm still way green around the ears an this is my first time through. I figured to make a few newbie slips early on but hey, growing pains. I'll eventually get my self set straight. I figured not taking a combat power was an bit unusual for myself but the MR reduction is helpful it seems. Live and learn.

I so called that. Also - he's not AG, so neither Stoneback Hill nor the Grey Circle are available to him

I am AG.

I saw Stoneback Hill but it seemed a bit much for me since I'm just starting out so I decided to wait on it.

I saw Stoneback Hill but it seemed a bit much for me since I'm just starting out so I decided to wait on it.

With 50 MR and a good offensive power, it's easy.

Buko

Well it looks like one of my first true tasks is to get a power that actually can be really useful.

Joddelle

Stoneback is scaled (the to-hits will be the same no matter what your MR is), but you want at least 70 Stamina before you try it.

Good ways to pump Stamina in early game:

visit dunsig and pick up the items from Irzynn the Outfitter...
seven knights in durnsig
cold winter's night in trithik (though since you elected not to pick up necromancy on startup this will be tough for you) - take the leggings
The Beast of Ironfang in trithik (again, necromancy makes this one pretty easy)

Thanks for the pointers. I've got a few powers to pick up. I'm off, thanks again all.

Or, it seems like you're not very far into the game. You could restart and take resroation and do wandering undead. Oh, and skills: take Thivery, Arcana, Unarmmed Combat, and Diplomacy.

@ Joddelle: Like I said, I saw your post after I hit submit.

EDIT: AAAAAAGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Thingirl, learn to type faster.

Buko, I would SERIOUSLY consider restarting and taking thingirl's advice re: powers and skills.

Buko

I am restarting, but why those in particular? Any advantage?

Buko

Wouldn't combat powers and skills be more useful?

They're the cheapest and most optimal way to gain all skills.

Character Startup Guide (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Character_Startup_Guide)

I really advise that you just play through a character and trust your instincts before taking this guide, as it can take away some of the fun of discovering the game.

Joddelle

Restoration because it's greatly helpful for survival and it sets you up to get a free skill.

Wandering undead gives you one of the best attack powers (Necromancy) in game for free.

The skill choices because of the information in the first post of the hints & tips thread (spoilery, but less so than the startup guide in the wiki.

The startup quest Wandering Undead gives Necromancy? Hmm.....

I just looked at the hints thread, yes a bit spoilerish but good advice. It looks like I'm calling in a Mulligan and starting fresh. I had no idea it was that realitvely "easy" to get so many skills that rapidly. I've got alot to learn. :)

I'd recommend not looking at any spoilers after that though. The time when finding a new weapon that increased your MR to a whooping 70 was fantastic was probably the most fun I've had with Sryth. This is probably the game that made the strongest first impression on me, and I'd hate for someone to spoil(er) that for themselves.

Buko

I'm on the same page. This is probably going to be the last question posted by myself for a while. This game looks to have way too much potential to toss it away with spoilers.
Pointed in right direction : check
Restarting character : check
Off I go....
