Seems to be an option at Zumryn's Battlegrounds. Is this new, or was I too dense to notice it previously?

I think it's new, I'll go check it out.
EDIT: Rules:
You will be engaging the master warrior and adventurer, Barynbor, in a non-lethal contest of arms.
Please be sure to read the following list of guidelines before continuing:
* You may attempt to spar with Barynbor every 2 hours.
* No magic may be used during this combat.
* No items may be used during this combat.
* Automatic item special attacks and abilities (those which occur at random) ARE allowed.
Difficulty. HE'S 18+ @ MR 171!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Has a special (31 damage observed)
I got defeated. But, I got 32 Gen. XP.

Wow! Good catch Zedalion (Repped) and by all means spar with Barynbor...
XP +4,096 You've been awarded a total of 4,096 Experience...
4,096 xp applied to general...
XP +1,024 You've been awarded 1,024 Experience...
1024 xp applied to All Skills and Powers...
You reach down and help Barynbor to his feet. Despite having been severely battered, he has suffered no permanent damage. He groans as he regains his footing and promptly congratulates you on your victory.
"And on your first try too!" he says, clutching at his ribs and gasping for breath. "I don't think I've ever quite been hit with the force you were able to muster -- and that includes a few ogres and trolls that managed to snap some of my bones!"

18+ @ 171.
Bug alert: It says in the rules that I can only challenge him once every 2 hours. I just got defeated, yet the timer says 57 minutes left.

I just checked and it says that noone has challenged Barynbor yet but that it takes several minutes to update. I did not have an option to challenge him or a countdown timer available. I will give it a few more minutes then I will send a bug report.
Edit: Bug report was sent.
Edit2: The list is now working.

I don't even see a timer. This is what I get when I go back and Converse with Barynbor.
You speak at length with Barynbor and learn of some of his more recent adventures, while relating to him some of yours. He tells you that he hopes that some day the two of you might share an adventure.
"To think of the trouble the pair of us might get ourselves into!" he says, grinning. "Oh well, perhaps it will come to be."
After conversing with him for the better part of an hour, you bid him farewell and once again set off on your way.
Please continue...

That, combined with previous posts, suggests that his MR is exactly 200.

Apparently you can only challenge Barynbor and defeat him once. I ran my secondary through there and got a beat down and the timer was there for him.

And now the timer is showing 1hour 21 minutes. Good thing I didn't actually write a BR. I wonder if you get the max if you die several times.
EDIT: I just looked at the leaderboard. I "hate" Magical, I "hate" Thordon, I "hate" Trent, and lastly, I "hate" Garet Jax. (In this case, 'I "hate" you' means I greatly envy you and wish you good luck, and possibly slightly resent you for your awesome skill.)

Yeah, he's scary. I'm not sure if this is supposed to be a reward for the very powerful characters (and perhaps those who have donated a lot), or if it has another function.
Ah well, as long as he's around I suppose I'll go get 32 free general experience by getting annihilated by him every time I go to the battlegrounds.

Edit:
I just sparred the bugger. He went down in 13 rounds! Yeahhhhhhhh!
A total of 5 out of the 20 adventurers who have sparred with Barynbor have been able to defeat him.
Adventurers Who Have Defeated Barynbor...
* 9/23/09 - Garet Jax [dhammett] defeated Barynbor in 16 rounds.
* 9/23/09 - Trent [racey] defeated Barynbor in 15 rounds.
* 9/23/09 - Thordon [smv1973] defeated Barynbor in 24 rounds.
* 9/23/09 - Magical [havoc] defeated Barynbor in 19 rounds.
* 9/23/09 - Elendil [theodril] defeated Barynbor in 13 rounds.

On my second try, after being crushed the first time:
SP +21 You've healed back 21 Stamina Point(s) from the combat.
XP +4,096 You've been awarded a total of 4,096 Experience...
4,096 xp applied to general...
XP +1,024 You've been awarded 1,024 Experience...
1024 xp applied to All Skills and Powers...

After upping my MR at Tally's, the pool and the mushroom patch in Ashlyre from 165 to 179, I promptly got my pride handed to me in the challenge.
So I headed to the BHC and at level 86 I got a nice surprise........
***************************
Through only the sheer might of your will you manage to reach the apparition's outstretched hand. The moment your fingers plunge into the ghostly glow, you're overcome by a powerful draining sensation...
You've been awarded a total of 2,048 Experience...
2,048 xp applied to general...
You've been awarded 512 Experience...
512 xp applied to All Skills and Powers...
Suddenly, the sensation subsides and the young woman's ghost rapidly fades from view.

Well the first time I took on Barynbor he handed my arse to me in a paper plate while remaining largely unscathed. So I headed back to Stormhill Manor to get Megnun's Warblade, which I'd put into storage for a time, out of storage. That brought my MR up to 180. That time I managed to get Barynbor down to 14% but he hit me with a few specials.

I was going to get my rear end handed to me by Barynbor. I saw this: Suddenly...
As you turn to leave, Zumryn suddenly moves over and asks if he could have a word with you.
The master of the Battlegrounds glances around to make certain no one else is within earshot. He then begins speaking a hushed tone.
--
"Mind yourself with that one," he says, his eyes darting in the direction of Barynbor (http://www.sryth.com/ci.php?f_c=showinfo.inc&f_infoid=barynbor), who's once again seated on the log next to the fence that borders the overgrown field. "I've allowed him to remain on the isle, but he knows well enough that my eyes will be on him. I have no liking for the company he once kept, and though he has sworn that he has severed those ties...well, let's just leave it at that for now."
You ask Zumryn who it was that Barynbor was associated with in the past, mindful that the master swordsman and renowned adventurer has a troubled history.
"A bad lot, all the way around," he says. "Just mind that you give extra thought to any request he might make of you. Well, there, let it not be said I haven't provided ample warning. I'll be telling others as well."
You thank Zumryn for his advice, and although Barynbor has given you no reason to suspect his friendliness is driven by hidden, less-than-scrupulous motives, you vow to remain on your guard when associating with him.
With that, you bid Zumryn farewell and leave the field.
I was back at the main BG screen. Then I spoke again, and got whooped.

Sorry to go back to the top of the page. But I was wondering if Thingirl was asking me that question! If yes, the answer is another yes! I toasted the lady ;) .
As to the speculation about who would be able to beat Havoc's Magical, we could refer to the Festival of Blades. In that tournament, the fighting was pure melee without magical powers. If the same applies to Zum's BG, then Magical's danger would be much less. And people with an MR higher than him would have the upper hand.

I don't know if I get it at all!
But this I know! Sorry for taking your question seriously! And sorry for responding to it! And sorry for wasting forum space on this silly issue.

Note to self: after sparring with Barynbor, remember to go and heal before attempting any of the other Battlegrounds challenges.... :o
.....or the CHR. Also it helps to remember to restock one's quickstone 20's before going to spar with Barynbor. :o
On a brighter note Hawk defeated Barynbor on his third attempt with the help of a small green mushroom from Fogbough and a nice MR boost from the pool which increased his MR to 200 and lowered Barynbor from 12+ to 9+.

Barynbor The Undaunted
Barynbor is one of the most illustrious adventurers and warriors of the current age, perhaps second to only Thymbrak , and maybe one other adventurer (whose name we need not mention)...
Although long considered to be an outlaw in Tysa (due to his known association with several powerful and unscrupulous characters), Barynbor has since mended his ways, and recently paid his debt to the Kingdom by way of a lengthy stint in the dungeons of Syr.
Since regaining his freedom, the imposing, black-bearded warrior has been involved in several grand adventures, and has begun to restore his name and his image -- both of which were tarnished due to his previous associations.

If so, Scout won't be there. I can't seem to get him below 70% before hitting the ground for the last time..... +18 and no magic just doesn't work for me.
Now if I could just GATE that demon lord once or twice, it might make a difference. "I'll keep him on a leash, I promise"

Just one problem with that. This is a non lethal bout. Just make sure you've got plenty of SP and a weapon with some fairly decent special attacks and you'll be fine. Might take a few tries but it does work eventually.

Another tip I'll give is...if the fight seems fairly close--make sure you use your quickstone 20's. I actually used 2 of them, and they sealed the deal. But I agree that luck is essential to getting you to that point where 20's make the difference.

* You slash at your enemy

I'm with Elrond on speculating that this is a prelude to some form of PvP. And this explains why his specials get past dodge/deflection/protection powers.
Because we as players do that all the time against monsters with protective powers. And if Barynbor is using 'player rules' then his combat abilities mirror ours.

Joddelle

Hmmm. I'm sure I've seen combat text where Joddelle has 'hit' but the opponent deflected the damage with magic, but then her special hit anyway. But I didn't save it or at least save it in a place where I can find it.
I'm thinking the sorceress in Stoneback Hill, or maybe the one in the tower of Eastfell - one of those early quests anyway. This is more an impression than a true recollection, if that makes any sense.

I know one ability of Oakaruk is to adapt and mimic their opponent. That could be related.

Hi, thanks for the report. The dodge issue with enemies should now be working correctly for all enemies. Enemies should no longer be able to execute special attacks when a dodge has been successful.

"And on your first try too!" he says, clutching at his ribs and gasping for breath. "I don't think I've ever quite been hit with the force you were able to muster -- and that includes a few ogres and trolls that managed to snap some of my bones!"

Just wondering if Esoteric's victory is NOT showing for everyone else on Barynbor's board.
Awhile back he defeated him and got the rewards and text. And initially his victory showed but now it doesn't - he gets the text he should for defeating him btw.
And if you count the actual names that list it is one short of what the text indicates. Currently it says "76 out of 407" but if you count the actual names you get 75 - or rather I do. Btw my other characters all show on the board as they should.
I know this is highly unlikely but I was wondering if he happens to show for anyone else as I just sent the GM a follow up email and never thought to ask that before.
