View Full Version : Forum Request: Smileys

This forum is a bit light on useful smileys, and I've really been missing some of the ones I've used at other forums. So I've downloaded some of my favorites from various places and stashed them away in Photobucket, and was wondering if there'd be any interest in having them added to the available smileys here?

Evil grin: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/twisted.gif

Frustration: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/wall.gif

We're not worthy!: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/not_worthy.gif

Suspicion: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/suspicious.gif

I can never think of something succinct to call this: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/tongue.gif

Shifty: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/shifty.gif

Mr. Angry: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/Mr_Angry.gif

Cheers!: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/beer.gif

Yes, we already have a smiley sticking out its tongue, but that one's got a very friendly, teasing expression. Sometimes you want something a bit more serious...

I've been feeling the same pain regarding the scarce selection of emoticons. I love the selection you have! There's another forum I frequent which has some really nice smileys too. I might download them sometime and "fix" them up a bit to fit the forum.

I would use Mr. angry a lot.

Good idea, and very easy to add to a vBulletin board.

Now if an admin with 'image editing' permissions would kindly do it...

Nice selection! I particularly like the 'we're not worthy'. And the 'cheers'.

I would use "Frustration" a lot. Especially at my spelling. Right, "aunt" Dooli?

That would be cool. Please do, when you have a chance.

Those are two of my favorites, too. This whole set came from the ProgressQuest forum, which has a pretty creative set of smileys -- many of which were created by the forum members there.

You know, I think you're being a little too hard on yourself. You've admitted that you're really good at math, but not so good at English, and that's actually a pretty common combination. Sure, some people here tease you about your spelling, and some people may judge you unfairly based on it, but I've heard that many professional writers can't spell worth a damn. That's what copy editors are for. :)

Thanks for the smilies! Repped!

@ Elrond: I'll note that you didn't say anything about the last part of YN's post.

@ YN: Yes, but I don't have an editor.

True, but my point was more to encourage you not to beat yourself up so much. That sort of thing is damaging to the self-esteem over the long run. There's an expression that goes "don't sweat the petty things", and ultimately spelling is a fairly petty thing. Yeah, it's important for first impressions on cover letters and resumes, not to mention college applications, but those are the sorts of things where parents or friends are willing to be your editor.

(I say this as someone who's spent too much of his life beating himself up over things that weren't worth it.)

Lmao...... I was thinking "don't sweat the small stuff". Stand repped as that makes me think of George Carlin.

Thanks, Oldschool!

Getting back to smileys, here are a few more that I like:

Okay, I haven't heard any votes against having some new smileys, but I haven't seen any official response from the admins, either. Any chance we could get such a response? Would adding more smileys be easy, hard, or somewhere in between? Is any admin interested in actually doing it?

I'm all for expanded smileys. I haven't the foggiest how hard, easy, etc. it would be to implement. Perhaps someone else could answer that as there seem to be a few members who are familiar with vBulletin.

I'm fairly certain it would have to be an Admin function and not one for a Mod.

As for the "staff" you can click on View Forum Leaders (http://www.srythforum.com/showgroups.php) at the bottom of the main page.

Sorry for the lack of replies people, I just have been very pressed for time lately.

As for the smileys, I'm all for it, but I'm concious that we need to check the licensing on whatever smily pack we import. If someone can point me to a pack that's available under a free license, I'll work on importing it over the weekend.

Good to see you again, Havoc. You made a good point about checking to see if the emoticons have a free license on it. Would the ones available on the previous forum count as being under a free license? (and if so, how can you tell?) :)

Not really. I guess that those would be licensed to proboards for their use.

Ideally, we'd want something explicitly marked as free.

Ah, I hadn't even thought of that aspect of it. I think several of the ones I posted were created by members of a specific forum, so I can go ask them which ones are theirs and whether they mind us using them too. I don't know about the rest, though.

I've found several repositories:

http://smileys.on-my-web.com/
This site assumes all its content to be public domain, and the site itself is under GPL

http://www.big-boards.com/smileys.php
Smilies by collection. This site makes no assertion about copyrights

http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Smiley and http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Smilies
Smilies on wikimedia commons, all are "all free" creative commons or public domain

http://en.support.wordpress.com/smilies/
Wordpress smilies. Wordpress is distributed under GPL so, while IANAL, using their smilies should be OK if we clearly indicate the source

http://www.public-domain-photos.com/free-cliparts/people/smilies/2
Public domain.

Okay, I've gotten some responses on the PQ forum about the smileys I've "borrowed" from them.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/twisted.gif is a standard smiley that comes with phpBB forums, which is what the PQ forum is.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/not_worthy.gif and http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/who_me.gif were found elsewhere and recolored by one of the PQ users to match the "smiley face" yellow in use on the standard phpBB smileys. He gives us permission to use his recolored versions.

Another user did the same (recolored an existing smiley) with http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v735/Old_Ned/Mr_Angry.gif, but she's no longer active on that forum so I don't have permission from her yet. I may have an old email address for her that may still be valid, but I don't know for sure.

No one's yet admitted to any of the others. The membership of that forum has fallen off greatly from its glory days, so it's possible the ones responsible for the others aren't around any more.

The guy who admitted to recoloring those two also said "Smileys are a free-for-all anyway, everyone grabs them from everywhere." His point, I think, being that the Smiley Police are not going to come after you for having some smileys that aren't public domain. :)

Expanded smileys? Lemme see what I thing about it.....

http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-happy023.gif (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

In light of the forum's sprucing up I thought it'd be the time to bump this up.

And by his previous post it seems Scarbrow's already familiar with the issue although his post was before he took on admin duties here.

And here's another site that at first glance appears to have free smileys.

And as I said previously I'm pretty confident that it would be a function for an admin and not a mod. For sure not this mod as copying from a site that approves hotlinking is the extent of my limited knowledge.

http://www.freesmileys.org/

Altough hotlinking them for the entire forum may not be desired.
