Yes, it's annoying when that happens. MPs go by pretty quickly. You could easily get up to do something only to come back and find out it's over.

I don't mean to sound really negative, but I feel like venting a bit of frustration. I just got a very sudden call from someone I'm supposed to meet tomorrow. There's a sudden change of plans, and instead of meeting her later in the evening, I have to go meet her at 7:30 AM. Don't you hate it when people suddenly change their plans on you--especially the day before.

Edit: I have been feeling a little irritated, because recently, I feel like I've become the "go to" person for last minute favors, and this just did it. Over this holiday, I found myself suddenly a pet sitter (the owners flew to Europe), and now I feel like I've become a chauffeur for people in need of rides.

Yes to Scout and Wetheril both. In Scout's case I've more than once said I'll have to go back to work to get some rest. And in Wetheril's especially if they knew well ahead of the last minute about the change but don't advise you until the last minute.

I sympathize TG. I'm trying to book some vacation time in Lake Charles La (casinos) over the New Year since I have 4-5 days off (I only set aside $500.00 or so to gamble, and sometimes I even win). However, the wife has cousins from the UK who were supposed to be in town during that time, but apparently there's some sort of airline strike in England and they keep telling us maybe they'll come, maybe they won't. I'm giving them a few days before I give up on them entirely.

I'm quite use to having a summer Christmas... for us in "upside-down-world", Christmas falls during the summer holidays; the kids are out of school and plenty of people have coincided their vacations to make sure the little buggers don't go unsupervised and burn the house down, etc.

For us, Christmas is a time for beach parties, barbeques, indolence and finding a place in the shade.

I've never experienced a white Christmas.

My wife's family is from Zimbabwe. I still remember her telling me about these "Christmas bugs" who would appear during the summer. I thought, why the heck would anyone name summer bugs "Christmas Bugs?" Actually took a few seconds to remember that holidays fall in summer south of the equator.

Holidays this time of year at the beach - what a concept.

I've never experienced a white Christmas.

Heh, I don't get white Christmases either, though for completely different reasons.

See, when my sister and I were four and a half, Dad took his 20-year retirement from the Air Force and we settled down in San Francisco. The climate here is very moderate; not too hot in summer, not too cold in winter. And it does not snow in winter here. In 40+ years of living here, it's snowed exactly twice, and I missed the second one because I stayed in the office all day and didn't go out for lunch.

So my last white Christmas was when I was about 4 years old -- I have a handful of memories of making a snowman, throwing snowballs, and "helping" Dad shovel snow. And that's enough, quite honestly; I get cold very easily, so I'd just as soon NOT have snow every winter. If I get an urge for a white Christmas, I can watch one on TV. ;)

I had two days off around Christmas and only expected 1-1/2 days around New Year's. Another attorney came back from vacation early and I took Wednesday through Friday off. Wish it was longer.

Unfortunately the heat conked out Saturday afternoon and the home warranty repair guy can't come until Tuesday afternoon. It never fails that something breaks down as son as the wife's relatives come to visit. Fortunately it's not that cold yet, but the high on Thursday is 26 (fahrenheit). The spare blankets will stay out through tomorrow.

Hmmmm, in-laws coming to visit during the winter and a busted heater. Presumption of innocence aside some wives might presume the husband guilty and some might even be right.

Joking aside hopefully your repair will be quick, easy and inexpensive. I'm sure those are all relative terms in Texas as they are here.

I've really taken to home warranties - all repairs cost only $55.00.

They're supposed to come by between 1 and 4 tomorrow afternoon. Until then, we stay under the blankets.

My home warranty company really let me down. The assigned some company called "Around the Clock" which, despite the name, is only open 9-5 M-F. They would not return my calls to set up an appointment for today (given that a freeze is upon us) and the warranty company was no help. I called someone else in who fixed everything for $300.00 - not bad, but I'll be on the phone with my warranty company tomorrow for reimbursement.

Anyway, no more blankets needed tonight.

Oldschool
01-06-2010, 02:49 AM
Sorry to hear that but like you say $300 ain't bad either. Main thing is that it's fixed. Hopefully dealing with the warranty company will be easily resolved. If not your professional skills may come in handy.

scout1idf

By having it fixed by someone you called, it will probably stay fixed.

Some of those fix it people that warranty company's use only make temporary fixes that give you more trouble than you want.

Reading about those things, I can only think of the luck we have here in Spain to have the Gulf Current warming us.

See, I live on almost the same latitude as New York (http://www.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=102962927669344342718.00047c875b76f072e26d8&ll=42.55308,-41.308594&spn=45.56236,89.560547&z=4), yet the biggest snowfall this year was about half an inch deep and melted within the day (in the city, of course). My sister, on Barcelona, closer to the Mediterranean sea, enjoyed Christmas at more than 15º Celsius (59 Fahrenheit). And yet we complain about our cold winter...

Young Ned
01-08-2010, 07:32 PM
That's something I don't quite understand. The east coast of the U.S. does have the Gulfstream current warming it, coming up from the Gulf of Mexico. Whereas the west coast has a current coming down from the Bering Straits between Alaska and Russia. That's why east coasters complain about how cold the water is at our beaches when they come out to "sunny California", and also why the east coast gets hit by hurricanes and the west coast doesn't. (The warmer water feeds hurricane strength.)

So how come the east coast gets snow at latitudes as far south as Virginia, whereas the west coast gets nothing but rain at those same latitudes?

jimyred
01-08-2010, 09:57 PM
Course, there's always the desert in the southwest. Here in southern AZ, it's been in the high 60s / low 70s for about the last 4 weeks. If my heater went out, I might not really notice for a few days . . .

On the subject of warrantys and hating it, I didn't extend the one for my car when it ran out last year, and now might be facing a $1,500 repair. GRRRR!! If only real life had an Axepath Cemetery where I could run through and pick up the money . . .

It's going to be in (fahrenheit) the 20s (maybe even the teens) through this weekend. For this part of Texas, it's cold. Fortunately the heat's working again, and even had a fire in the fireplace the last two nights (and probably the next two at least).

Ned, I remember seeing something on TV years ago with the answer to your question. I know it has to do with wind patterns rather than current (something about wind going east to west instead of west to east, which would reverse the coastal weather), but I just cannot remember specifics.

TG if you're getting spacers I'm assuming you're going with traditional braces? If so what color(s)?

Forget the "cream and crimson", might I suggest "old gold and black".....

http://704sportscollectibles.com/images/purdue_3x5_flag_2.jpg
:p:cool:;) Sorry couldn't resist, cream & crimson are of course the Hoosiers's colors.

But seriously (and now that I've got you seeing red;)) any thought on colors yet? And I think you can change them on subsequent visits - I seem to recall my daughter being told that.

Either cream and crimson or BLUE and gold. Or both and change them. Blue and gold are the colors for the MHEA Eagles (http://www.memphishomeschool.org/0300.htm). (BTW, the archery link of the top of the page is my league. :))

But I have to live through getting them to get colors. Did I mention I hate dental work?

I was the only one of my three siblings to not need braces, but I still remember the gap in my brother's teeth (meaning how far the upper jaw overhung the lower jaw) was so big that he could put his index finger between the gap without touching either jaw (lol).

Anyway, in this case TG you're fortunate to be home-schooled, namely no teasing from your fellow classmates. Still, I understand these days braces are virtually invisible, unlike the metal wiring in use when I was your age. Now probably no one can even tell.

thingirl

I'm not getting Invisalign. I'm getting metal wires and stuff.

Yeah traditional braces are still on the market and still seems to be fairly common although the ones TG mentions are becoming popular. They remind me of mouthpieces we used while playing certain sports just a lot smaller and not made out of soft rubber/latex.

Re: mouthpieces. Rugby players seem to disdain them for some reason. As I've said before the best way to tell a rugby player from a football (American "style") player is the amount of teeth or lack thereof. ;) I'm only partially joking. Of course the lack of headgear and a facemask (for most players) is probably a bigger reason.
