Because an update this big deserves an announcement, but mostly I feel like bragging about it...

I spent most of the day today doing PG II:The Perilous Streets (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Proving_Grounds_II:_The_Perilous_Streets), and updated all the rewards and difficulties in the Wiki.

By the way, the toughest guy is in the last scenario, and is 9+ at 70 MR, with 85 SP. Though there are lots of combats with 9+ at 65 MR and higher SP than that scattered through the story.

Nice and very repp worthy.

EDIT: You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later.

Hmmmm, I'm starting to discern a pattern here......

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to Joddelle again.

Lol.... repped after I spread some around.

EDIT: That didn't take long. Also that puts you at a very deserved 300 Joddelle.

I thought I'd add what I'd been working on all evening to this thread as well.

To-Hit Values of the Ogre Lords (In The Lords of Ogredom):

After concluding the 9+ values of 4 of the Ogre Lords, I constructed a table of their 9+ to-hit values based on an observed pattern. The table is not officially incorporated into the page yet, because it is untested. Please see the talk page (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Quest_talk:The_Lords_of_Ogredom#Combat_Values_for_ the_Ogre_Lords) for the table and the discussion.

I just want to give a public "thank you" to everybody who helped test the MR values of the Ogre Lords. The confirmed data from the talk section has now been updated on the Wiki Page (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Quest:The_Lords_of_Ogredom#Ogre_Lords.27_Stats).

Proving Grounds III:Shadow Over Stonegate (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Proving_Grounds_III:_Shadow_Over_Stonegate)

The above has been updated with to hit information vs the recommended MR (or close to it) for most battles. Most are 3+ or 4+ but there are some surprise 6+ and 12+ enemies in there.

Also, some encounters were missing (mostly insignificant ones), but they are in there now.

Finally, the xp awards differed in some cases, I suspect due to Power usage by the original testers. (I kept both values, and represented them as a range.)

My only regret is not getting the checks for the graveyard.

Why did I do this? Simeon needed some more SP. He got +12 extra out of it.

I'm proud to announce that the wiki page for "The Eye that Binds (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Quest:The_Eye_That_Binds)" is now (more or less) complete.

The text directions and maps have been added, all the 9+ MR values and SPs of set encounters are there, and determining the difficulty of the labyrinth skeletons has been an exhaustive effort that took me a good part of this morning and afternoon.

Well, I'm certainly more than satisfied with everybody's efforts.

You all have been making our wiki a far better place, and it keeps improving. I've handed out some repps around here to my dear colleagues for that. And just because you're not the most active user doesn't mean you're of no use. Oldschool, in particular, makes it better for everybody by tending to the game updates, that otherwise depend on my copious free time. And that means I can dedicate to devise even more complicated templates.

Like the one I came here to announce! After dozens of hours of solid effort, Template:Foe (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Template:Foe) is at last complete. Please go to the wiki to test it, and consider using it on your daily work. I hope it will be of much use.

EDIT: Oh, and I almost forgot! Scout1df, bad boy, come off your behind and start wikiediting again now!

Did you notice this out of the description, "changes the game as he wishes"?

Very nice template - Since I'm working on it anyway I went ahead and updated the Ring of Illusion (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/RoI) with the foe template. I have to say I'm not a fan of the background highlighting for normal monsters, but otherwise I like it a lot!

I could add another option to color to remove all background altogether, but I quite like the little extra highlight it gives to battles. And the default color is very soft. Opinions anyone?

There's a new template on the block: Template:HeadingLevel (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Template:HeadingLevel). A simple way to be able to do again what we lost when we started using Item and Quest pages: adding automatic invisible headings so the item or quest will show in TOC

It's simple, but I hope you'll like it. Especially Joddelle and Wetheril, who had both asked for something similar.

Just thought I'd announce that Shattered Skull Part III: Blade Square (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Quest:The_Shattered_Skull_Part_III:_Blade_Square) has been updated with a detailed walkthrough, and more specific changes to the difficulty requirements.

Changes were made because the old walkthrough made it sound like you HAD to have Necromancy 70+, or you'd be forced to fight a battle you had no chance of winning. You can indeed fight the tough battle (9+ at MR 150, 300 SP), or you can simply flee without any consequences. Having that high level of Necromancy is just a nice exp perk, nothing else. :)

Joddelle
10-18-2009, 06:57 PM
Nice! I always try to have Necromancy 70 by that point, but it's great to show all the options.

wetheril
10-18-2009, 08:30 PM
Yeah, I agree. Before now, I've always gotten my characters to Necromancy 70+ before doing Part III. Now that it isn't the case anymore, I actually think it's a great idea to complete the Shattered Skull series before collecting all your skills and powers. With the toughest battle in the whole saga topping off at 9+ with MR 87, it's better IMHO, to forgo the 64 exp you get to Necromancy in Part III if it means you can get up to 20 ATs early on (for finishing Part 5) to help pick up that quickstone sooner. None of the quests give AS&P exp, so I think this is a great option, especially for those of use who are trying to be "purists".

Joddelle
10-18-2009, 09:45 PM
Well, I build Necro not only for that, but for Crow Hill (16 AT for an easy combat if you blast with Necro), Meglamire (another no AS&P quest, this one requiring 70 in a skill or power), and as a way to get by the few battles needing 100 MR in the first half of PG V (getting Shadowmagic in Eye of the storm). And finally, because Palemoor Isle gives you bigger bonuses to Necro (in the thousands) for higher levels.

Pretty much, after I acquire all skills and powers that cost XP to get, I pour all general into Necromancy until it's at 70.

A little off topic, but is there any real reason NOT to pick up the quickstone as soon as possible? I don't mean the 90 day XP bonus, but the actual quickstone. I'm about to get one, and just wanted to make sure there isn't something I'm missing since the AT's are non refundable.
Also thanks for the update! Makes the quest much more accessible.

Definitely pick up the Quickstone if you have already gotten all your skills and powers, and the Creyn Blade. The only incentive for not picking it up right away is if you need the ATs to borrow equipment from Tallys a little longer, and either haven't collected all your skills and powers, or you need an extra MR/SP boost to do key quests like Runeskins. From a previous thread, you already have your Creyn blade--which is terrific. If you haven't collected all skills and powers yet, I think at this point, it's really up to you.

And you're welcome. I'm glad the re-write of the walkthrough for Shattered Skull Part III has been helpful. I was considering re-writing Shattered Skull Part IV's walkthrough, but I decided not to bother for now--it's not a very difficult quest; it's just a little convoluted. I've already been delaying working on Heir to the Flame for a while now, so I'll get around to writing that walkthrough in the next few days. :)

When turning in Rotsbane, I usually buy the best Tallys shield I can afford at that moment. This boosts my MR enough to take on Lord Tarkhald and the Ironbone Champion behind the Silvered Door in Tarkhald crypt, for 4 AT each and a total of 8 AT.

Then while I still have the shield, I do the first half of PG_V to get 9 AT and Shadow Magic.

And then I sell the shield and buy my quickstone.

Item:1016 Bone Icon Of Shadow Might

This small, square, glowing icon, is crafted out of solid bone. It's obvious that this strange object is not of this world.

The likeness of a cloaked figure is etched onto its surface.

You may affix this Nevernal Icon to any imbuable item you may possess, to enhance the attributes of that item. Click the ITEMS button to view your inventory and then USE the desired Imbuable item.

Splendid work, you two, Shadowblack and Joddelle. I'm unable to add more reputation to you yet, but will do on the first occasion.

Since Joddelle is on usually-Scarbrow's-maniac-wiki-editing mode, I'm going to work in some other sections, like Sryth's Encyclopedia (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Sryth_Encyclopedia), to avoid edit conflicts. I'll review your changes once you've finished, but for the moment I can only say: WOW :eek::eek::eek::eek::cool:

By the way, for Items we don't still have the Item IDs of, I have a proposal: Let's create the Item pages, like Joddelle's been doing, with just the Item:Name, but in the "ID =" field, let's hazard a guess on the range of Item IDs. Since the GM always adds new items with consecutive Item IDs, and that information gives us a quite precise estimation of the date they were added, having the forum with the dates of the posts and the Game Updates announcements we should be able to place items more or less in their right place. As more and more items are added, we'll end up having the right value by mere exclusion. And in that moment, we'll move them to the appropriate "Item: ID Name" page name. How do you like it?

Joddelle
10-25-2009, 05:29 PM
Here's some items to help you along with the Encyclopedia:

The format is Link|Page Title, and if there's no title, the link is broken, but still appears somewhere in-game.

Joddelle

Great job, Joddelle! However, your hard work made me realize I forgot to provide the Item ids of many raffle items. I do have the Ids of most. How should I add them? Do I just move the page to a new one that has the ID in the title, and edit the itembox?

I took care of it. Awesome job collecting the id's!

I was wondering if anybody else is encountering the same problem, but Firefox (v 3.5.3) seems to have problems accessing Wikia. The problem started earlier this evening. I tried in Safari just now, and can get to the page. Strange.

Yes, it is showing up as a blank screen. Same with if you tried to access the Wikia main page.

Edit: Okay, beyond the main page, other pages are not working in Safari either.

Ditto as I was just trying to update the Game Updates. I get the main page fine but if I search it opens another tab and nothing. Also I have a couple pages saved as favorites and the same thing happens as with searching - a blank page.

Incidentally I upgraded to Firefox 3.5.4 recently.

I'm off to try IE 8 and will edit appropriately.

EDIT: Same exact thing with IE 8 whether I'm searching or clicking on anything other than the main page I get a blank page. The only difference is if I try to log in it stays on the main page and says something about errors on the page. The log in issue is also the same with Mozilla Firefox and Internet Explorer.

Just checked some other wiki communities/pages or whatever they are called.

Some are working - so far those that have a different "look" or format than Sryth.

The ones that I try that look like Sryth's via GooglePreview are doing the same thing as Sryth's. Actually I can't even load them at all while I can load the mainpage for Sryth's.

An old one time adventure, Midnight Adventure (http://shadowwolf47.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=srythhelp&action=display&thread=1575), that isn't in the game anymore that some of the old timers (Havoc posted in the thread) might have details on.....

Maybe it's something that the GM would reinstate??

shadowblack
11-29-2009, 11:44 AM
Judgung by what Havic has said in that thread, the Midnight Adventure is just another name for Gralgarak's Tomb quest.

A few posts below there's this:
The 'Midnight Adventure' was a one-time adventure that was available to all those that managed to find its location within an hour of midnight (Sryth Server time) on a pre-specified date.
--------------------
It's still there ;D (Admiring my new emerald bracelet and other new armor) And is it tough!

Email from our wonderful GM:

"Your mention of the midnight adventure (and requests from many players) reminded me to make it available for those who had not yet played it.
You should now be able to access the adventure. If you've conquered the shade goblins in Westwold you will be able to access the adventure by "mingling" in the Stoneback Tavern in Hawklor.

Which character did you use when playing the scenario? I'm asking because of this:
Bonuses: Archery (+35- Item:1677 Grand Ashen Bow), Woodsmanship (+20), Agility (+10)

If the character had 100 Archery, then the Archery bonus is Archery x0.25 +10 from the Ashen Bow. If the character had 80 instead, then it is Archery x0.25 +15 from the Ashen Bow
If Woodsmanship was 80, then the Woddsmanship bonus is Woodsmanship x0.25
And Agility bonus is Agility x0.5

Are my guesses correct?

I've already posted updates of some these in the relevant threads, but I decided, to make it easier to find, here are some key recent updates including links to updates that weren't announced on the Wiki updates thread before:

1. The new Glowing Goblin Winter 2009 Installment - The Broken Hole (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Glowing_Goblin#The_Broken_Hole_-_Winter_2009_Installment).
2. The Obelisk of Winter (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Quest:The_Obelisk_of_Winter) quest page.
3. Scarbrow's Template:ItemName (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Template:ItemName) and Template:ItemID (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Template:ItemID). Of these two templates, I find myself using ItemName a lot! It really saves time having to look up the Item ID of the item in question, when making an item link. Thanks for making those templates and many more to improve editing life, Scarbrow!
4. Spar with Barynbor (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Quest:Spar_with_Barynbor) - it'll need another update now with Oldschool's alts joining the leaderboard.
5. And from a while back: A Contest of Bows (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Quest:A_Contest_of_Bows) covering both the first and second archery tournament.

Well edited not updated is more like it. Anyhow, I deleted the possible benefits/results of eating green mushrooms and put them under the MR category as all I've gotten from them for quite some time are MR boosts.

Thanks, Scarbrow. I really didn't expect that there would be so many things to investigate in one of the oldest and easiest adventures in the game.

By the way, I made some additions to Sryth Encyclopedia (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Sryth_Encyclopedia). Could you check for mistakes, and also that all items are in alphabetical order? Some were not, to my surprise.

Or better yet, check the attached file and see if everything in it is on the wiki.

P.S.: It's a .doc inside a .rar, but it has been renamed as a .zip because this forum does not allow the upload of .rar files.

Thanks, Scarbrow. Could you check for mistakes, and also that all items are in alphabetical order? Some were not, to my surprise.

Wow, there was a whole load of terms I didn't had. It's done, I have also ensured the alphabetical sorting.

Or better yet, check the attached file and see if everything in it is on the wiki.

I've also added everything on the file. By the way, you have several duplicated entries, not exhaustively: Trithik, Shadow Path, Takabak, Palo, Charna, Sebaldin, Srythak, Hook-fiend...

Special thanks for the Igranolt (http://www.sryth.com/ci.php?f_c=showinfo.inc&f_infoid=igranolt) reference. Now I'll remember it every time I find a small red gem shard when exploring at random. How did you found it?

And lastly, I've been able to find all of the references in the Reference System but the "Milestone Combat Contest Prizes" one. What is the name of the node?

shadowblack
02-04-2010, 08:54 PM
I was adding info to that file without checking if the info was already there, based only on my memories about what I had added previously, so it's not surprising there are some duplicates.

Looking at the info for the Milestone Combat Contest Prizes I found this link: http://www.sryth.com/ci.php?f_c=showinfo.inc&f_infoid=contestprizes

Luckily the link was in the text itself so I didn't have to guess.

I need to check my other files for info entries since at some point I stopped using a separate file for them and started adding them to the regular ones.

W:eek:W...... Nice work guys and thanks for the links Shadowblack.

Iirc the Milestone Combat Contest was for explore the realms at random encounters and the winner was the one who won the specific numbered encounter - which if I recall wasn't known at the time of the contest.

Also a few of those prizes seem to have found their way into Tallys.

Well I can't stand it so I'm off to necrothread......

EDIT: From the Adventurers Tokens page of the wiki,

There was a race to the five millionth combat fought. Those who guessed the milestone number (5 million) or who had fought 100 combats that day would win a silver boost pack, which included 8 Adv Tokens. Those who were one of the ten people who fought a battle before the milestone received a gold boost pack, which included 16 Adv Tokens. The person who fought the milestone combat (Maghnosius) won a platinum boost pack, which included 24 Adv Tokens.

Also according to the thread the winner got to choose from a list of prizes in addition to the above.

Edit2: Seems I've not only necrothreaded and necrotreaded but posted there as well (note the next to last post). I knew I'd heard or read about this before. Again here's the link. For "newer" folks to view this thread on the old forum you'll have to register on that forum.

http://shadowwolf47.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=talk&thread=665&page=1

I added three more things to the encyclopedia, including the info for the Milestone combat contest.

By the way, it wasn't limited to exploring the realm at random - ANY combat counted, as long as you won (if you fled or died it did not count - I specifically asked the GM about that). I wasn't AG at the time and thus did not have access to Explore the Realms at Random (back then that was AG only) so I used Trithik random encounters (since I had no adventures left).

I looked at some of the maps you've created that way... very nice! I've used Excel to create several maps in the wiki (see, for example, the maps in The Dungeons of Saarngard (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Quest%3AThe_Dungeons_of_Saarngard) and The Dragon Statue (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Quest:The_Dragon_Statue)), but your format is cleaner than mine. And I'm sure the macros will save a lot of time; I had to do all the formatting manually in mine.

Unfortunately, my current computer doesn't have Excel, only the OpenOffice equivalent, and that doesn't handle Excel macros well at all -- I haven't yet found a spreadsheet with macros that it CAN process, actually. So I probably won't be able to use your spreadsheet to clean up the maps I've created, until such time as I can get my desktop machine working again... which probably won't be any time soon. :(

I still have the original spreadsheets for those maps, though, so I could email them to anyone who wants to use Scarbrow's spreadsheet to clean them up.

The discussion about selling Iakor/SS weapons reminded me about this,

On the topic of Mezaryl, I went to her before I had Tzal-Toalth, and let her look at my items. I had one of the items that i could later trade for the gem for Tzal-Toalth, (I think it was Wraithking's Sceptre) and she offered to buy it from me for gold and ATs (I think 16 ATs) I didn't do it, because there was an option to use Diplomacy 70+ to ask for more money, and mine wasn't that high at the time. I went back when it was, but I had Tzal-Toalth, and the option to sell was no longer available, just trade for the gem. Has anyone else seen this?

I'm quite sure we had a discussion time ago about why it should be this way, but I'm unable to find it (and I've searched). The only reference I found was this one (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Item_talk%3A211_Emerald_Bracelet). Does any wiki editor remember more about it?

shadowblack
05-21-2010, 05:33 PM
The reason was that this is the way the names are displayed when viewing the item info. HOWEVER the names for the Aldvarian Artifacts are displayed in the game the same way they written are on the wiki. My guess for that is that "(uncommon)" starts with a "(" which is the same when capitallized, with the "u" counting as a second letter and thus not capitalized. This results in weird-looking names such as "Aldvarian Artifact (very Rare)‎‎".

thingirl
05-21-2010, 05:40 PM
Or, think about it this way. The items are "Aldvarian Artifact" followed by a value indication the condition and how many BMs they are worth.

Also, they are listed as "Aldvarian Artifact (value)" when picking them up, on the inventory list, when putting them in and taking them out of storage at you residance, at Trynd Keep and Durnsig, and when selling stuff. No where is it listed as "Aldvarian Artifact (Value)".

Scarbrow
05-21-2010, 07:07 PM
I supposed that was why they were written that way, but what I meant was to remember the details of why did we established that policy, apart from items which show differently on several screens (although I think that is reason enough to have a clear-cut policy on wiki item names, even if the GM is usually less strict with that).

We already have a lot of items (in particular, items with lowercase prepositions like "Blade of the Fox" we've rewritten as "Blade Of The Fox", so changing Aldvarian Artifacts to match this was a matter of keeping consistency among all the names.

Curiously, the rough estimate for sryth.com (http://www.quantcast.com/sryth.com) is even a little bit lower, until some moment on 2010 when traffic started to flow in a lot. Maybe that's the reason for the new server?

I joined Sryth in February. I don't know if the GM was doing so before but that's when I started seeing ads on FB. If the marketing increased it would make sense that forum traffic would increase too.

Hi. The quest page for this adventure, which I've taken the liberty of calling "The Circle of the Wolf", has been added to the wiki here (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Quest:The_Circle_of_the_Wolf).

Still missing from the quest page are info on the Wolf's MR at lower levels, specials and anti-magic (which I didn't think to take note of before, though Shadowblack likely has this covered) and the "tips" section.

I've added a certain amount of new items from the Bloodrune Collection. Any help in completing it would be much appreciated, I don't have more time today.

I've also noticed the Item IDs of level 5 Bloodrune Items do not match the ones which were raffled. I've sent a report to the GM to clear this, and I would advice not to duplicate entries until we get a confirmation. Instead, note down the new ID on the preceeding Level 5 item.

Update: The GM answered:
[...]Yes, the items from the raffle have different ID number than those
currently in the trading post as the raffle items aren't eligible to be
returned to the trading post, etc. Apart from the different ID number,
the items are identical with regard to stats and bonuses.[...]

So we have confirmation we'll need to fill the new ID pages. And that the items won from the raffle are not eligible to give a huge AT bonus, which is of course a good thing, since free ATs are always more valuable than any single object you can buy with them.

Talk about dedication! I wonder how you manage, all things considered - life, templates, data, organizing, communicating, playing... last I glanced, you wiki-edit count was nearing 6,000 (am I right?); that alone sends my mind into a vertigo-induced freefall.:)

Mind, I haven't been looking at statistics on the wiki, and obviously others - possibly (probably) many others - are owed everlasting gratitude by players of Sryth for all their work; not flattering: without the wiki, I'd be doomed to endless disappointing discoveries, surprises, frustration and - ultimately - restarts or even quitting (?), while trying to capitalize on the rewards, since in many cases there are no "do-overs", nor multiple saves.

I love to experiment, but various constraints can make that highly "unprofitable", dearly paid and frustrating, maybe infuriating... Any, who peruse the wiki without appreciating the work and the people behind it, may well be inconsequential fools not worth considering.

(Exception from this last remark is automatically granted those reckless and real adventurers who jump into the abyss unseen, come what may. Of course, that might easily turn into an expensive path, and such reckless adventurers may well have to follow texlaw's suggestion and improve their status in life just to be able to donate prodigiously...;))

I'd been lost and "up Hades's creek without a wiki" [sic], were it not for the wiki - a most special laurel goes to the co-operative effort of Joddelle's and yours, Scarbrow, for the Character Startup Guide.

Two, three hundred additional reps might be considered insufficient for all the work, including the "managing" of lesser wiki demons (insignificant imps? - this one is directed solely at myself! Unless anyone wants to share the charge...:D), like myself...

I'll supply one rep right now, if allowed (I should still have some room to manoeuvre...), and should probably set to check the contributors' list and likewise reward all others as well...

Thank you all.

Flattery... I have a weak spot for that . Who hasn't?

Answering your first question, I manage my time by means of extreme multitasking. I can do three, even four things at a time in Real Life. In front of a computer, I can do a dozen or more. It all depends on the concentration needed. I also free time from traditional occupations: I concentrate housekeeping tasks on a single day, often I sleep as little as I'm able, I eat quickly, I cook simple recipes. I walk fast, I commute on the fastest routes, and I read books on my way (I can't stop reading). But above all, I don't watch TV. At all. I read newspapers online. And I can use the net at work, so I do it as much as I can while adequately covering my post (again, more multitasking). I spend a quite large portion of my Internet time on Sryth. And about playing... I haven't played almost any new adventure from the beginning of 2009, saved the temporary ones. The wiki has absorbed all my energy.

But don't think I live a life of self-sacrifice. I enjoy metagaming as much as actual playing, maybe even more. And I have accomplished several large metagaming projects, many of them related to programming in some way or another (the combat mechanics investigation, the parsing and convert of the whole old forum, the (failed) attempt to create a Tallys auto-optimizer (I have a prototype which can equip you decently, but an expert player can still do better by hand), the Character creation investigation, and of course the wiki migration, upgrade and maintenance, plus the templates and more). Some of these projects are not complete. Some of them are still in progress. The bad part about the multitasking is that often a project will languish for months at a time until I pick it again. I have literally dozens of such projects, both in and out of Sryth. The good part is that by doing this, I'm never in the position to say "I have nothing to do", although a few times I find myself wondering "What do I do from all these options?", or even "I don't feel like doing any of these things", although the latter is a rare event, and most often it just indicates that I'm tired.

So that's the secret behind my huge edit count: I enjoy editing and documenting (a part of metagaming) so I do it much, so I spend a lot of time, and I don't stop to do it, day by day. Shadowblack and me (and Oldschool to a certain extent) are the only editors (that I can remind now) who keep contributing steadily, although we have benefited from a lot of small contributions and several high-profile creativity ourbursts in the past who have greatly helped what the Sryth Wiki is now. Havoc, Joddelle, K!Zero, Young Ned, Hastifer, Wetheril, Octarinemage come to mind right now. Mercury McKinnon has been pretty active lately. And now you, Tetracapillactomist. Hope it lasts and you don't burn out.

However, I have a secret pride: For all my edits, I could have a lot, lot more. And my secret pride is: whenever possible, I try to do all edits to a page at once. Yes, even for large pages. Even for the Quest List or the Proving Grounds. For each five, ten or twenty edits you log to a long Proving Grounds review, I log one or two. And even with that, I'm close to 6,000 edits. We have so little editing activity, that I almost never find myself on an editing conflict. Although a lot of the edits come from the complex templates, when I have no other option than save to let changes propagate to other pages. And of course, creating between 1,500 and 2,000 item pages myself helped a lot, even if all the loot was created with a second account labeled as bot (doesn't show in Recent Changes). I'm everywhere (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Editcount/Scarbrow)!

On other news, we finally have the updated database dump (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Statistics). 150 MB of uncompressed XML with all page revisions. 20 Mb compressed. I just have to receive an answer from Shoutwiki and another one from the GM, and the migration can begin.

Yeah, the Wiki Updates thread is my personal bragging playground :p

Your working style actually sounds kind of like the GM's -- he, too, has lots of unfinished projects in progress at any given time. ;)

At any rate, you've done a ton of work on the wiki, far more than anyone else I know. Far more than I have, certainly; I haven't had time for much of anything wiki-related since around the time it moved from PBwiki to Wikia. Thanks for all you do!

Flattery... I have a weak spot for that . Who hasn't?

Short reply: "I beg your pardon!?" ;)

That's the answer you would've got, Scarbrow, had you not implicitly questioned my motives... :D

As you did, however... here's a slight elaboration:

It wasn't flattery ('sucking up' for fun and profit makes my skin crawl and my body shudder - without a hint of exaggeration!)... My thinking was: who would have done the work, if not you? Would the wiki be as useful and usable as it is? Who'd step in, were you to say one day: "I had my fill"?

This, for the record, is Oxford's short definition of flattery or [to] flatter: "praise that is not sincere, especially in order to obtain something from somebody". Other ones are: "exaggerated or insincere praise", "undue compliment; overpraise, esp. for gain or advantage", "inspire [a person] with hope, esp. unduly", etc.

Rather I and my post didn't come across that way. :)
(There are other, more subtle and gentler meanings, but the overriding adjectives trumping all others are "undue", undeserved, exaggerated...)

As I'm sure both Young Ned and Oldschool would attest, there is nothing about the praise that's "undue".

-------------------------------

@all (everybody): as far as "reps" go (regardless of their real or perceived worth), I took a practical approach: numbers, probability (without the formulae, only by 'winging it') and a dollop of conjecture (without dragging out the formulae, that was unavoidable...):

-users receive reps based on content posted on the forum;

-they average anywhere from ~0.1 (all the way up) to ~0.8 reps (this latter ratio of 19 reps to 23 posts belongs to Zen And Tonic, incidentally), with most commonly encountered ratios in the 0.2 to 0.4 range (I have no time right now to do a proper "survey", so I took about 26 random samples from among users whose rep count is greater than 10, with preference given to totals of at least 20 - Z&T remained only to provide the upper limit);

-in order for you to be awarded the number of reps you arguably deserve for your body of work represented by the wiki as a whole, you'd have to post bragging messages after each edit worth mentioning - notice too that I didn't post a single such message, which should tell you what I myself think of my wiki edits :)[shrug] (with the singular exception of the post related to Varkyn's Ring, which was a minuscule edit, but carried the GM's message, and that too was posted only at your request - with me being shy and all:))... I can tell who the real maven is;);

-being cautiously conservative (i.e., negative:)), let's round downward - to 5,000 edits; keeping in mind that users have posted relatively modest additions, while Scarbrow counts entire pages as a single edit, that really is a conservative estimate, even if we include the edits he did announce...

-all that's left to do, is to multiply the provisional estimates: for 5,000 edits posted, the multiplier's the only debatable variable; to put it simply: how many reps per 100 posts? There are some dozen ways to calculate averages, the formulae of which would be a surefire way to send some running and render others comatose (if I haven't already achieved that...:o).

In the end, it's easier if I show three figures based on factual, simple averages (among the 26 users I checked):

averages|-min.|Scarbrow's own|-max.
rep/post |-0.081|-0.474|-0.826
total reps|-405|-2,370|-4,130

(Even the minimal ratio is 100-200 reps higher than the 200-300 I suggested!)

I rest my case. ;)

-------------------------------

Shadowblack and me (and Oldschool to a certain extent) are the only editors (that I can remind now) who keep contributing steadily, although we have benefited from a lot of small contributions and several high-profile creativity ourbursts in the past who have greatly helped what the Sryth Wiki is now. Even for the Quest List or the Proving Grounds. For each five, ten or twenty edits you log to a long Proving Grounds review, I log one or two.

Somehow, that secret wasn't able to hide from me.:p:rolleyes:

But I wouldn't dream suggesting that we're in the same league - nor even in the same neighbourhood'

Concerning my wiki edits, the "motto" of the project (and of Wikipedia and all wiki-related branches and progenitors in general) sticks in mind:

"Be bold!" - and I interpreted it this way: if you have potentially helpful information, verified data, facts, explanations or clarifications: enter them! It's so easy, so 'direct', so straightforward - no applications needed, no waiting for approvals, no triplicates, no endless debates... you know something - share it;

in fact I started adding some time before registering - after registering, I noticed the edit counter, and the fact that it kept track and displayed the number of my edits in a great big font size at the top of my "Talk" page initially annoyed me (as if nagging me by stating "too much!", "too little!", "do more!", "do less!"), so I decided to ignore it and tried to counteract it by marking every edit as "minor" whenever I remembered, regardless of its extent - but that goes against global wiki policy, so I ceased doing it;

now it's become the leading edit counter in spite of me, hence the 'governing' wiki of my unified account. It is also the first game-related wiki I ever used (or even visited) - a status it still holds.

The main thing, as far as my thoughts progressed on the subject, is that the information be as precise, complete and helpful to somebody craving needing, craving it, as is possible - and the wiki is ideal for such a purpose: all centralized, easily accessible, easily located collection of facts and relevant, often essential information;

I figured that any shred of additional data would be most needed and helpful there, so that became my initial focus - but initially I wasn't recording the events, so I had to enter them on the spot, documenting my progress while playing the game for the first time - a bit tricky...

-------------------------------

Hm - what you say about your MO also holds true for me, by and large (in some ways surprisingly so - I have flags flying all over the place; when things lag in one area (and my interest with it), when one flag is 'half-masted', I go and raise another.

I do watch television - used to be hooked on all things automotive (F1, BTCC, DTM, TOCA, AUS-V8, special events like Targa New Zealand, the Goodwood Festivals and Revivals, Mille Miglia, etc.); although "watching" doesn't describe it well, as such things were mostly in the background. I gave up that package - these days I tend to have TV 5 in the background...

I sometimes wonder what is meant by boredom or sighs accompanied by claims of having nothing to do - but that's a potential dissertation, not a post... whether boredom is just a temporary bout of depression... but these things are complex and dependent on so many factors (cultural, socio-economic, environmental, psychological), that I rather not get bogged down in it now, as I'm not in the right mind-set to have an insight on the subject...

After all, I'm trying - and ought to - keep this post short...:D
Did you say something?...

P.S.
@Scar (again...): It's ultimately up to you, Scarbrow, but considering the excruciating aspects of this post, I suggest that next time you (and all others, for that matter) graciously accept my sincere and (sometimes?) pragmatic compliments, accolades, and praises - without calling them flattery and me, a flatterer... ;)

I'm afraid it's me who must beg your pardon, Tetracapillactomist. While my mastery of English is already reasonable, I still fail to grasp some of the nuances. I thought "flattery" to mean "great compliments and congratulations", as in "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery", not undue/undeserved. No offense meant, of course, and in the future I will (more or less try to) graciously accept any kind of compliments, accolades, and praises. Who am I kidding? I love them

I thought "flattery" to mean "great compliments and congratulations", as in "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery", not undue/undeserved.

I think what you may have missed is that the phrase "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" implies that all the other forms of flattery are less sincere and therefore less deserved or undeserved... so we tend to view flattery in general as insincere and undeserved. Deserved compliments and congratulations are usually called "praise".

Also... There's a funny story hidden in those words: "rock" and...

...as I was typing "I beg your pardon!?" - was suddenly reminded of an (often heard...) anecdote about Iggy Pop, who was confronted by a journalist about him wearing "a lady's dress", to which he responded:

"I beg your pardon! This is a man's dress!"
(this may be closer to paraphrasing, rather than quoting, but that's the gist of it)
