View Full Version : iPhone app/mobile play?

I had been looking for a good text based/gamebook style game to play on my iPhone and had no luck until I stumbled upon Sryth. The game is actually very mobile friendly (I play just using the default web browser) but I'd personally love to see a format especially designed for mobile play, either in the form of an app or a secondary web format. Anyone else consider this?

Hi, feel free to submit the suggestion to the GM via email.

This may sound very silly but how does one email the GM is there a contact us section or is the email posted somewhere? Also on a side note, is this GM everyone mentions one person or many, who is it/are they?

The GM is one person. His name is Matthew H. Yarrows (You can tell this because at the bottom of the screen it says all material (c) Matthew H. Yarrows). GM stands for Game Master. Here's a link to the wiki page (http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/GM) on him and his profile (http://www.srythforum.com/member.php?u=2)on the forum.

If you're submitting a bug report/typo/feedback about a particular quest, there is a link in the bottom right-hand corner for that. Otherwise, you can email him (gamemaster@sryth.com). You don't have to post your emails to him over here, but sometimes, especially with bug reports, people do post them and his reply.

The GM is one (albeit one almighty) person. Look at the bottom of the Sryth site and you can even see his name :)

There's an in-game feedback link at the bottom right of your game screen for bugs, typos etc., which is the one to use if you want to report a problem with a specific page, as the GM will know what point you're sending the report from. You can also email gamemaster@sryth.com with suggestions and general feedback.

EDIT: Ninja'd by TG - now there's an unusual occurrence... :)

Does the GM read these suggestions or would it be best to email this idea?

Just wanted to see if anyone else had played Sryth on a mobile web browser such as the iPhone and has any feedback as to things that could be implimented to make mobile play easier/more friendly.

The GM replied to my suggestion asking for what kind of changes would be nice to see for mobile devices.

I replied with:
-----
I'll be very honest, playing on mobile browsers such as the iPhones is actually friendly in general, I find the only time I am wishing for a change is during combat, when the screens change, its a lot of dead space and the 3 combat buttons are kind of small in comparison to the whole size of the page, it involves a bit of scrolling back and forth and zooming to get through each round of combat. And don't get me wrong, I can't say it ruins or hurts the game play at all for me, I've actually found myself getting very used to it and I have a flow down. But a more compact combat screen would certainly be a blessing.

As far as other suggestions, bigger buttons maybe next to text options would be helpful since all the clicking done on a mobile device is using a finger or a stylus, I've found myself mis-clicking options every now and then because the text choices are a bit small for my finger and I get too lazy to zoom in before clicking. Also dropping items, equipping items, and using items, I've found those buttons are very tiny and unfriendly for touch screens (also when zooming into the black drop arrow usually the name of the item is off the screen to the left, so you kind of have to hope you clicking the right item's arrow). Is there any way to add these options when you examine an item to see its stats, there's a button to use the item, but there is no button to equip or drop the item, if those were added that may prove useful.
-----

I don't know if anyone else would care to add their 2 cents to the table on this?

As for the item having an equip/ drop button in the description a really big YES!!!!!!!!!!! As for the rest of the stuff, I don't really have an opinion.

Reviving an old thread since I think this is a great idea that I've tossed around recently.. a Sryth iPhone app...

I was considering suggesting it before too, and now with the new iPhone out, and iPad, it seems to be a very, very practical move to get Sryth out to a (much) larger fanbase. Any "free" app can get thousands of downloads, and given even 1% of people stick with Sryth, it helps the game overall.

I was thinking it might have been too much work for the GM to program it himself as an app, so didn't give it much more thought. But it'd be nice to see a free or $0.99 app for Sryth.

When I first started rolling a character in Sryth, I couldn't get that part to work on my iTouch, so never really tried playing it on-the-go after that, but now before sleeping and playing other iPod games, wish that I could play Sryth too.

The less elegant solution, but probably still do-able, and embraces all the new smartphones out now, is on sryth.com a "mobile device" play-button or automatically detect mobile devices that has, as Tazar Yoot suggested, a different web interface.

The interface would require more "clicks"/taps to do something probably, but if it's intuitive, it should provide for smoother gameplay than scrolling around 3 frames and selecting from huge drop-down lists. Basically, I see removing the right-hand frame, and using the bottom buttons to bring up something in the main game screen. And yes, the combat interface would need some tweaking. Make everything 1 screen deeper and add big buttons..!

Maybe with enough feedback, we can point the GM to this thread, and someday I can play Sryth while lying in the comfort of my bed ...

I will add my name to the petition for Sryth App. Most of my non-work-related internet use is through my iPhone now; it would certainly make life easier.

I really wanted to play text MMOs on my phone, and it really wasnt working out to well. Until i discovered i could download a new browser to my phone. It was a real game changer. Now i can play some text MMOs (including this game). The browser is called BOLT . Check it out, Java works better, and it has TABS (ooo ahhhh). dunno how cool it would be on an ihpone, nor do i know if it would even work on an iPhone.

I was able to get logged into Sryth on my Palm Pre web browser, but could not get the text boxes to scroll and had several other issues moving around. As mentioned above, size of buttons/touch screen was an issue, but because of the scroll issue, I couldn't even get to some buttons. Has anyone had luck with this?

If love to see Sryth app for iPad. I played whole night from iPad via browser and while it was ok, with decent app it could smoother gaming experience drastically

I was actually thinking the exact same stuff (except for android). I would also like to see a readable info pop-up window. Every time I click on something in order to get more info on it, it reverts back to standard page size, and if I try zooming in, it zooms the game page behind it.

Would love to see a m.sryth.com. All you really have to do is cut out the frames and graphics, I would guess. Hadn't thought about it until today, when I realized I'll be srythless for a week soon while in the middle of desperately trying to get a couple longterm quest items.

I thought I'd jump in here - making one of the display settings more mobile-friendly would be great. For the most part it works on my phone, but sometimes the sizing gets messed up, and, for example, the stats window takes up most of the window, or the left window (the action window) will cut off, and since there is no embedded scrollbar, you can't scroll down, and you are basically stuck on that screen until you can get to a computer, click randomly on display settings a few times, then usually the mobile browser will be OK again for a while. A dedicated mobile browser setting would be great. I'll be picking up the Android Galaxy next month, so I'm assuming it probably works better in general on that anyway, but just in case, thought I'd bump this and bring it up. Since my work computer is blocked for various websites, Sryth included, my only option is the mobile browser on my Palm Pre.
