I found the following link about Sryth in the real world. How reliable is that site's info?
Sryth in the real world (http://www.websiteoutlook.com/www.sryth.com)
And here is an interesting link with some Sryth demographics. I wonder how reliable that is too!

I don't think the GM would be relying on this as his sole source of income if it's worth was around $8k.
How did they get that info?

I don't know how they got their info. But in any case, that info does not include AG subscription and donation income. It is only an estimate of AD revenue (I think).

So the second site thinks that 57% of US Sryth users have children. Where on earth are they getting that from??

Heh... interesting, but horribly inaccurate.
I did a quick Google for 'website outlook', and came up with a couple of sites that confirmed, at least insofar as they could, that the site was basically worthless. Essentially, from what I can tell from those sites and from scoping out other sites like Google, MSN, Microsoft, Yahoo, and some lesser known ones... is that it basically just multiplies ad revenue based on an arbitrary figure (page hits) to figure out a site 'worth'.
It doesn't take into account volume of sales, donations, registration, any of that into it's figures, which blows the whole thing out of the water. But, a quote I found at one of the sites said it best:
"In the end, your site is worth what someone else is ready to give you for it, and nothing more." - Quoted from here (http://www.webmaster-talk.com/monetization/149273-how-accurate-is-website-outlook.html)
So, if someone was willing to pay 30 grand for Sryth, that's its 'value'. If no one wants to buy it, it's essentially 'worthless', at least from that perspective.

For those old enough to have played D&D in the early days, I think you'd agree that fantasy role-playing games were largely a male province. My own gaming group in high school had one woman and that was a first. The fact that about 10% of active forum members here are female is very impressive. The more diversity, the better.

Sorry to disappoint Zmfalvius! But I've been away for quite a few hours! So, I'm out of step with that discussion which started out talking about Sryth's gender distribution, then discussed Thingirl's attitude, then ended up with transgenders!
In any case, and due to my basic intelligence, I'm aware of only 2 genders (male and female) in pure biological terms in humans. In behavioral terms, the options may vary much more than that!

*plunging boldly into the quagmire*
I believe "gender" is more of a biological term, with basically "male", "female", and (rarely) "hermaphrodite" as the only possible values. Well, "transsexual" or "transgender" includes people who are only partway through their transmogrification from one to the other and thus have some characteristics of both, which isn't quite the same as hermaphrodites, so I guess that could be a fourth possibility.
"Gender preference", on the other hand, is a different thing entirely but often gets confused with "gender" because of the similarity in names. "Gender preference" includes women who prefer men, women who prefer women, men who prefer women, men who prefer men, women who like both, and men who like both, which is... six different categories. I seem to remember hearing once that there's a seventh, but if so I have no idea what it is. If you include the preferences of hermaphrodites and transsexuals as well, you end up with a lot more than seven...

Oh bother, here I go... ;)
What you call 'gender preference' I'd call 'sexual preference', since it relates to sexual habits rather than gender identity.
Biological gender is usually more straightforward, but there are cases - which I'm guessing fall into your category of 'hermaphrodite' - where people have some biological characteristics from one gender and some from the other.
I'm no expert, so I wouldn't presume to start on how this happens, how often it happens and how it affects the people concerned, but there's plenty of literature out there.

Very good point, Dooli. Now that I think of it, "sexual preference" does make more sense for that usage, while "gender preference" may refer to which gender one prefers to BE rather than which gender one prefers to have sex with. This is the sort of thing that happens when I pontificate about things without reading up on them first...

Possibly, but if the worst thing they find on the internet is the unvarnished information that people have different sexual orientations and that gender can be complicated then I think they're doing quite well.

Actually, "sex" is limited to male, female, and intersex (from my understanding the word hermaphrodite is generally considered inaccurate and offensive by intersex people, though since I'm not intersex I'm hardly an authority). "Gender" refers to how someone feels about themselves, which has as many POTENTIAL categories as there are people in the world, though the vast majority identify with the gender they were assumed to be based on their physical characteristics at birth.
What you call gender preference is sexual orientation, which as you point out isn't limited to just "straight", "gay" or "bisexual". Since there are infinitely many possible gender identities for both oneself and ones partner(s), many people I know prefer categories like pansexual or just "queer" (careful with the latter, though, because many people in the community still find it offensive). There are also other components to sexual attraction and sexual identity than just the gender of ones partner, but that's not really an appropriate discussion for the forum, I think.
I speak on these things from personal experience. I'm not willing to discuss the details of that experience on the forum, but I'm happy to share with any forum regulars via PM.

Thank you. Every time someone used "gender" when they meant "sex" was driving my anthropological background up the wall. Good thing I read through the thread to see if someone else had already made the point.
I'm intrigued by your insights on the many forms of gender identification. I confess to knowing practically nothing aside from the conventional, as well as some scattered snippets of cultural acceptance of unconventional roles. Not Western, notably. In any case, have a rep for appeasing my shrill, pedantic muse.
