11/18/09 - A Contest of Bows - Part II
A second grand archery tournament is getting ready to begin at Zumryn's famous Battlegrounds on Iron Crown Isle.

Beginning this evening (11/18), adventurers proficient in the use of a bow may attempt to qualify for the tournament by paying a visit to Narsaryn at the Battlegrounds on Iron Crown Isle.

The contest will run through November 30th, with participants able to attempt to better their best scores every few hours.

Zumryn and a mysterious, but generous partner, will be providing grand prizes for the top finishers.

Bows and arrows will be available, but contestants are free to use their own equipment, if they so choose.

Zumryn could not be reached for comment.

Yay! Hoepfully this time I'll have better luck...

In any case I'm STILL not going to increase my Archery to 100 (it's 96 right now)!

Well, this gives me an excuse to get it to 91 (I think. At least 90.)

I think that the two of you should just take your time. There's no need in having EVERYONE with Archery over 90 or at 100, now is there? :D

True. But, I got pushed out of the top 10 in Archery recently and want to re-claim my place. It's not that big of a desire, or else I already would have (I've got the XP).

So how does this contest work? Will those of us who are only 76 in archery be able to be competitive, or do I need to do some mega-serious grinding?

We'll know once the rules for this contest are announced. They might be different from last time (hopefully for the better).

spencer
11-18-2009, 05:47 PM
In the first contest, there was a good bit of randomness...but you still had something of an advantage for having a higher archery skill....it will be interesting to see if the GM tweaks the rules any for part 2.

I believe you took nine shots and there was an item that you could win before the contest started that helped your score, at random, of course. Your compilation of all shots with all your bonuses (both from archery and from randomness, along with the random rolls) made your score...good and confused now? Cause I am and I participated before.

Interesting event and btw...

For helping out Narsaryn, you get a Silver Archer's Charm, which I'm assuming is a "good luck" charm?
Silver Archer's Charm (1576)

* Class: Misc
* Encumbrance: 0

One side of this coin-sized, circular silver charm bears an etching in the likeness of a bow. This charm was given to you by Narsaryn, after you helped rid her of the bothersome Mirsurik. She claimed that the charm had only a small amount of its original power remaining, and that it would bring you luck in the archery tournament being held at Zumryn's battlegrounds.

Interesting Wetheril as it sounds like folks that missed out on the first archery tournament's scenario and item get them on this go round.

I went with that item in all of my alts inventory and did not get an encounter. On my next run I'll leave it out of one of my alts inventory and see if they get the encounter - I'm doubting it but it merits checking.

On another note I'm happy to report that..... (although in light of Wetheril's post it would seem a bit redundant)

Nonetheless, the Silver Archer Charm from the first encounter seems to have a bit of power remaining. You suddenly feel quite lucky...

LOL! I was about to add the item to the Wiki, and noticed it was already in there, and I was a little puzzled at first, until I saw your post, Oldschool. Perhaps you don't get the encounter if you still have your "good luck charm" from last time (and only people who didn't get it in the first contest get the encounter?). Though I noticed it is a droppable item (and even has a sell price). I wonder if that was changed from last time?

In light of this second challenge I thought a little necrothreading might be in order. Also since the wiki seems to be a bit sparse on the first tournament I thought the threads may also be of assistance in that regard.

SPOILER WARNING: Some of the info in these threads is/may be spoilerish especially the "Bonus Calculation" thread.

Actually if it hadn't been for Spencer's reminder I would've completely overlooked it and we'd know for sure. I earlier said that I figure the encounter only trips once and it probably is NOT dependent on whether the item is in one's inventory.

However, you bring up an excellent point in that it may be dropped/sold. Now I'm really getting antsy for that timer reset so I can remove it from one of the alts inventory to find out for sure.

Thanks for the links Oldschool, and repped. Especially helpful since none of this info is up on the Wiki yet.

I didn't try to physically drop it yet, but it's got the drop tab. Also, it sells for 1 gold, so I don't recommend selling it. xD

You're welcome.

When you posted the item info I went to the wiki and seen the item listed. Since you're so thorough on your wiki work I wondered if you just added it especially since the first tourney isn't on there. I then checked one of my characters for the id# against the one you listed. I didn't think to check the history for that wiki page.

When I realized the first contest wasn't on the wiki I thought those links might help. Also I thought it may help to bring folks that weren't around for the first one up to speed.

I'm guessing the charm we got from the first contest is good for this one. Reason for this is the girl smiles at you, before you helped her she hated you in the first encounter so she remembers we helped her this time and smiles. Also you don't have to qualify for the contest this time you can just take your first shot after you pay the gold.

Oldschool
11-19-2009, 02:52 AM
Yeah it still works. I'm real interested and willing to forfeit the use of it on one run to see if not having the item resets that encounter.

Also a reminder to anyone wanting to test it. If you run the encounter and do NOT save you still have to wait the timer reset out.

I really need to pay better attention. As I'm waiting on the contest timer to reset I just noticed that another "holdover" from the first tournament still works - Havocs reset timer. Have a rep Havoc.

I wasn't around for the first one, so this one was interesting. I got really low rolls and still placed just out of the top 20, but it's early in the tournament. The next round should be better - maybe I'll increase my archery.

Finally up and running again with the laptop - fortunately had a few days warranty on the hard drive when it quit on me.

Oldschool
11-19-2009, 04:30 AM
Although I'd already made a run with all of my characters and saved which locked them into being entered into the tourney I still ran two of the alts through without the charm. One had it stored the other had dropped it - neither got the scenario.

The real test would be someone that was around for the first contest running it without the charm before entering the challenge.

Intersesting to also note the scores for this one compared to the last one. The last one was won with just over 3k and all of the runner-ups had below 3k. This one just started and we already have a dozen scores over 3k.

With your own bow in hand, you accept twelve arrows from Narsaryn.

Each time you participate in the contest, you'll launch 4 arrows at each of the 3 targets. Every shot you take will be scored, based on how close your arrows comes to the centre of the target.

Last time we had nine arrows (3 shots per target). No wonder the scores are higher this time.

I was confused for a minute by the leaderboards. If you enter the battlegrounds, click "View the battlegrounds leaderboards", and click "A Contest of Bows", you get the leaderboard for the original archery contest back in August. I was wondering why it showed my high score as 2247 when I knew I'd just gotten over 3000!

You have to enter the battlegrounds, click "Special battlegrounds events", and click "View the leaderboard for this challenge" in order to see the scores for the current archery contest... :D

And yes, Narsaryn remembers you from last time, so you don't have to qualify for the contest again this time, and the archer's charm still has some charm left. I got "you feel extremely lucky" just before one shot, and that was the only shot where I scored more than 300 points.

And yes, Narsaryn remembers you from last time, so you don't have to qualify for the contest again this time, and the archer's charm still has some charm left.
This is my first contest, so I could not be remembered from last time, but Narsaryn told me "Your reputation precedes you," and I did not have to qualify. My archery level is 77, so I guess that's what she's talking about?

Also, when I get up to shoot, the box that tells me my bonus says
Your combined Might, Body, and Agility scores ARE high enough to provide you with the full bonus against this target. Your Archery skill level (77) IS high enough to provide you with the full bonus against this target.

Yet my bonus is only 198, and even when I rolled a 100, I didn't get any extra bonus or anything, so my score was 298 for that shot. Reading the "full bonus" line made me think that I would get a higher bonus, but obviously that's not the case. Does anyone know what they mean by that?

Have you checked out the Archery Bonus link in Oldschool's post (http://www.srythforum.com/showpost.php?p=17542&postcount=21)? That may answer your question. Last time we had nine arrows (3 shots per target). No wonder the scores are higher this time.

Nice catch as I had already run it before I checked the older threads for the details. Also the first part of that text has me wondering about two things. First I wonder what happens if you enter without a bow. Considering the official announcement, "Bows and arrows will be available....." I'm curious and on my next run I'll go without a bow. I'm also wondering what would happen if a character without Archery entered the contest.

I just ran the contest again and there is a flavor difference if you enter the contest with or without a bow.

Without a bow, "You take one of the bows resting on a nearby wooden rack and accept twelve arrows from Narsaryn."

With your bow, "With your own bow in hand, you accept twelve arrows from Narsaryn."

If you arrive without a bow you leave the same way - without one.

However, I am not sure if the archery bonuses are the same as the ones from the last one. They seemed lower when I calculated my last run, but I'm going to have to compare to what my secondaries get.

When I first read about the Archery Bonus posted by Havoc on the thread, (thanks again to Oldschool's necrothreading skills) just like Barn42, I noticed a discrepancy between the supposed bonus and the ones I was actually getting. Looks like that is both true and false.

Giving the thread a closer re-reading, I noticed that Havoc had originally thought the bonuses (http://www.srythforum.com/showpost.php?p=4947&postcount=1) were 1.75*Archery (Round 1), 1.5*Archery (Round 2), and 1.25*Archery (Round 3), which he later admitted it was not the case (http://www.srythforum.com/showpost.php?p=4955&postcount=4).

In fact, it IS as the GM had told Havoc:
The GM had actually told me 1.25, 1.00 and 0.75, but since I was getting 175, 150 and 125 at level 100, I figured that he had changed something since he sent me the numbers.

But if you multiplied your archery directly with those numbers, it appears a bit too low. Well, after fooling around with some numbers in Excel, I've come to this conclusion:

Archery Bonus = [(Archery Level) * (Round Bonus)] + Constant

The Round Bonus is 1.25 (for Round 1), 1.00 (for Round 2), and 0.75 (for Round 3). The constant seems to be level specific, and maxes out at 50 at level 100.

Here's some examples below showing how that is calculated.

Clairvoyance with Archery level 75:
Round 1:
Archery Bonus = 75 * 1.25 + 30 = 123.75, rounds to 124.
Total Bonus (with other stats): 194

Round 2:
Archery Bonus = 75 * 1.00 + 30 = 105
Total Bonus (with other stats): 175

Round 3:
Archery Bonus = 75 * 0.75 + 30 = 86.25, rounds to 86.
Total Bonus (with other stats): 156

Altaria with Archery level 90:
Round 1:
Archery Bonus = 90 * 1.25 + 41 = 153.5, rounds to 154.
Total Bonus (with other stats): 224

Round 2:
Archery Bonus = 90 * 1.00 + 41 = 131
Total Bonus (with other stats): 201

Round 3:
Archery Bonus = 90 * 0.75 + 41 = 108.5, rounds to 109.
Total Bonus (with other stats): 179

Shadowblack with Archery level 96: (I took your numbers from your post and they correspond perfectly!)
Round 1:
Archery Bonus = 96 * 1.25 + 46 = 166.
Total Bonus (with other stats): 236

Round 2:
Archery Bonus = 96 * 1.00 + 46 = 142
Total Bonus (with other stats): 212

Round 3:
Archery Bonus = 96 * 0.75 + 46 = 118.
Total Bonus (with other stats): 188

Magical with Archery level 100:
Round 1:
Archery Bonus = 100 * 1.25 + 50 = 175.
Total Bonus (with other stats): 245

Round 2:
Archery Bonus = 100 * 1.00 + 50 = 150
Total Bonus (with other stats): 220

Round 3:
Archery Bonus = 100 * 0.75 + 50 = 125.
Total Bonus (with other stats): 195

Edit: Btw, all the results are assuming you have the Silver Archer's Charm. Without it, your achery bonus is actually lower than the formula suggests. That will be addressed in another post once I get another round of data to work with.

So a person with 100 archery has 114 bonus points right off the bat over someone with 75 archery? Divided out over 12 rounds means I need to avg 10 higher per roll than anyone else to win everything, so I guess it's possible. Except my last time through I probably averaged 35 per roll, with no luck bonuses . . .

I don't know when this change occurred, but you can now see the leaderboard for this challenge through the regular leader boards link.

Battlegrounds Leaderboards

* The Lords of Ogredom...

Battlegrounds Special Events Current Results

* A Contest of Bows II...

Battlegrounds Special Events Past Results

Well, I finally got some luck bonuses during my rolls. But due to low rolls my results was still lower than my best:
8 modified by 236 for a total of 244 :(
67 modified by 236 for a total of 303
38 modified by 236 for a total of 274 :(
55 modified by 236 for a total of 291
Your total score for the first target is 1,112. :(
95 modified by 212 for a total of 307 :D
89 modified by 282 for a total of 371 (very lucky) :D
15 modified by 362 for a total of 377 (extremely lucky) :( if only this roll had been higher...
90 modified by 212 for a total of 302 :D
Your total score for the second target is 1,357.
99 modified by 188 for a total of 287 :D
33 modified by 188 for a total of 221 :(
89 modified by 188 for a total of 277 :D
81 modified by 188 for a total of 269 :D
Your total score for the third target is 1,054.
Your total score for all three targets is 3,523.

Close to my best, but not good enough. And not even close to those above me. :( :(

P.S.: I noticed the change in the leaderboards yesterday, and I thought I mentioned it here, but it seems I forgot. Oops.
P.P.S.: Great job figuring out the bonus calculation, wetheril!

Well Shadowblack at least your average roll is still 63 :-) My highest average is 55 and the rest have been consistently low 40s!!!

I thought my luck may have changed with my second roll today but Lady Luck was right there to slap me down with a wet fish!

23 (my highest first roll)

Erm..... he almost always does. I recall that being addressed before in Questions for the GM if I'm not mistaken. I seem to recall his mother's family being English or something along those lines. Goes off to necrothread again......

EDIT: From Questions for the GM April & May 2008.

Miryenne says in a clear voice: “I remember reading somewhere that the GM is based in (I think) Connecticut, but I've noticed that he tends to use British/Canadian spellings. Do you hail originally from somewhere outside the US, or is it just a personal preference?”

Yes, I'm from Connecticut. I use the spellings just out of personal preference. My mother was born in Bristol, England and moved to the U.S. with her family when she was young, oddly enough!

You've hit on the crux of the matter for me as well. But I'm still raising Selkit's Archery to 80. If so, mine's broken the same way. Probably run the challenge 15 or 20 times so far and never more than two bursts of extra luck per contest.

Personally with this contest I really don't think it matters if you raise your xp. I think it's mostly random and luck. I think you really just need to hope your charm is lucky. I'm somewhat lucky that shot went through even though it's an hour and a half old (my internet died just after I got the XP for it) No roll lower than 78, and 3 charm boosts lands me solidly in 4th place (up from 31st with 3300ish, which was my first try...) of course I DID sorta spend most of my XP on Archery skill before taking the shot (up to 96, #3). I'm still lucky it didn't log me out while I fixed the internet so I could save and file the shot.

Ironically, worst wind conditions coupled with extremely nice rolling streak will dethrone that guy! Good luck ;) .

I do find it odd that a heavy wind helps your archery in this case... Even if it were a tailwind it would foul accuracy (causing shots to go long rather than hit their mark, a headwind would force them short and a crosswind would simply make them miss...) Maybe the charm thing makes our arrows ignore wind conditions or turns the wind into additional power for no real reason other than magic?

Thinking of this logically won't help. It is just that the GM, as Racey pointed, has programmed specials' probability to increase with worsening wind conditions. So, the Charm works more with worse wind conditions.

How is it I take a shot with a gentle breeze and get 3 charm boosts and above average rolls, I take a shot with a "fierce ravaging wind", I get 0 charm boosts and rolls that make me wanna scream (nothing higher than a 36...). Not even over 3000 points, bleh.

If you have the Silver Archer's Charm, then you should be able to break 3000 easily. All you need is to keep trying. But it seems that the 3300 benchmark has been set for a special prize in this contest. So, that's the minimum target.

Does anyone else always get awful rolls on the first round, or is it just me? Pretty much every time I go, I get a better score on my second round of 4 shots that on my first round.

Oh, and for a comparison of how much better the harsh wind can make your shots, my high score without it is around 3,100; high score with the harsh wind was over 3,500. That's how I'm currently in the top 20 with only an 87 rank in archery . . .

Personally with this contest I really don't think it matters if you raise your xp. I think it's mostly random and luck. I think you really just need to hope your charm is lucky. In my honest opinion unless you want to raise your archery skill over others, that you'd rather train use your xp on something else. Heck if I thought it would make a big difference I'd move my archery xp from 96 to 100

You can say that, but if you look at the rankings, the people in the top 20 all are VERY high ranked archers.

in short before the first person of 95 or lower (94, Myshella (ellis)) ALL the 100 and 96 skills make the list. So skill does make at least a moderate difference, especially considering 1 point of skill applies across all 12 shots, with the first round getting x2.26 bonus from archery (1 point becomes 2 per shot, +8 to score), the second round gets x2.12 (1 point becomes 2 per shot, +8 to score) and the last gets x1.95 (1 becomes 1, +4 to score)

Note: Due to the math, investing a single point may give greater or lesser returns due to where it may fall on the curve. In general multiple points at once will give a far greater overall return than a single point.

Some very good rolls against the first target (including a 100), a few luck boosts (though they were usually of the "somewhat lucky" variety), and this is the best I could manage? At least I improved my old score...

Thanks for checking my numbers but I may have fouled something with the math and used the TOTAL modifier as the base number, not just the archery skill modifier (which would lower the ratio a bit, smaller number afterall.) It doesn't change that there are spots where 1 point is REALLY important because it puts you up over the decimal, but it does change the impact of 1 point overall.

If you look at the thread for the competition, Wetheril has it explained how the calculations work out, it's a lower archery modifier with a constant added in. While archery ranking certainly does play a part, luck can be a HUGE factor, as evidenced by the fact that I with a level 87 archery currently have a higher score than Magical, who has a level 100 archery.

Actually, Archery isn't calculated that way. If you took samples from various levels, and simply divided by your archery level, you'll see that the "multiplier" varies. Take a look at the Archery Bonus thread (http://www.srythforum.com/showthread.php?t=317), and later at my calculation post (http://www.srythforum.com/showpost.php?p=17729&postcount=54). It is as Jimyred pointed out--it's:
Archery Bonus = Archery Level*Round Bonus + Constant (that is level-specific). The Constant is 50 maximum with the Silver Archer's Charm at level 100. But without the Silver Archer's Charm, your constant is actually less. (So far, I'm seeing it at less by about 8-9 points, without the charm.)

And btw, this discussion should be in the Contest of Bows II thread.

Nope I haven't seen that. Mind you I have only had four 'somewhat lucky' s spread over my last TEN attempts!!!!! Having read on here that the stronger the wind the more chance you have of getting lucky I tried that theory out on my last two attempts. The result........ One x 'somewhat lucky'! The "You feel ___ lucky" text changes based upon how big your luck bonus for that shot is. "Somewhat" is around 40, all the way to "Extremely" being 160. There are a couple others in between, but I don't remember what they are.

And to Young Ned, my best score was with a fierce wind, I haven't gotten within 300 of that score with anything else.

Edit: "Very lucky" is an 80pt luck bonus. And with a gentle wind, my rolls just averaged 37, with no luck bonuses.

So far it seems that everybody is just as clueless about this as me(maybe a little less since it didn't even notice the weather text till somebody pointed it out).
Is anyone certain that a gentle breeze is not the best time to loose your arrows?

was this a Sagittarian coincidence? Or just the fact that it was my birthday?

Heh... conspiracy theories abound.

Cheers Chareos, but I have to admit to a string of high rolls punctuated by two extremely lucky rolls.

To balance this out, I had 3 rolls of 100 in one round... followed by three single digit rolls. Gutted!

I sent a bug report to the gm about the bonus levels changing, and got this reply:

Hi, thanks for the report. It seems that the total bonus isn't displaying correctly
on the results page, but the bonus is being fully added to the final score. I'll see
what needs to be done to fix how it is being displayed with the results.

I wasn't sure if anyone posted it, but I thought I'd go ahead anyway. I was looking at the journal on my stats page just now and it said this was posted a few days ago:

"Zumryn told me that there will be a special prize for any archer who manages to score at least 3,300 points in the tournament."

Any speculations?

I too got the same answer to my report:
Hi, thanks for the report. It looks as if the bonus is getting applied correctly, but the
displayed amount for the total bonus on the results page is incorrect. I'll look at the
results and see what needs to be done to fix what it is displaying.

All the best and thanks again for the report!

P.S.: That comment about the special prize was already mentioned earlier in the thread. There wasn't much speculation due to limited info.

One of the "speculations" is that it could be a new bow to replace the "Short Bow" each adventurer has been carrying since the start of adventuring. I do hope that it is a bow that gives bonuses.

Somebody once suggest the power to not fail archery checks for a new bow but doesn't that defeat the purpose of leving up archery?
I hope if the prize is a new bow that isn't its power. At least not its only power.
How about a bow that can be used in combat?

Things just don't get any better. I am going to have to take the MIGHTY SKYRAGE HAMMER to the young lady who is handing out the arrows! I am positive she is giving me all the bent ones. I just had FIVE out of twelve that scored below ten points! No luck bonuses either but that doesn't matter as they wouldn't have made any difference.

9 18 61 20
2 90 61 5

I will wait until the end of the contest so as not to spoil anything for those of you that can roll decent dice, but don't be surprised if there is no 'Contest of Bows III' as it is very likely that the organiser of this event will soon be suffering from a terminal headache :-)

Silver Archer's Charm (Use)

* Class: Misc
* Encumbrance: 0

One side of this coin-sized, circular silver charm bears an
etching in the likeness of a bow. This charm was given to
you by Narsaryn, after you helped rid her of the
bothersome Mirsurik. She claimed that the charm
had only a small amount of its original
power remaining, and that it would bring you luck in
the archery tournament being held at Zumryn's battlegrounds.

Personally, I think that mine is out of juice.

I'm lucky if I get lucky once each time out, and then my roll is low enough
that doesn't help........

Grrrr........ It definitely seems that luck is the biggest factor. And to be honest I'm not sure that "a gentle breeze" isn't the best wind. I haven't been playing much other than some sporadic runs through the tourney. Still Hawk's best was his first try which is less than 100 below the 3300 while Virago had some good rolls along with a few charges of the charm working to put her over 3300. Hers was definitely with 'a gentle breeze'.

I've even started running Hawk through with his archery leveled to 94 which brings his general xp to just above 1 mil and still can't beat his previous best which was accomplished with his current archery (82) so I haven't saved.

We're getting down to the wire and it ain't looking good.

You can't really discount high level archery even if luck, especially charm bonuses, are the biggest factor in your score.

11-29-2009, 11:37 PM
High archery helps, but luck is definitely a greater factor. (And I think the wind conditions don't necessarily equate to better scores--the results are really all over the place.) Good luck to everybody on the last leg. Tsuki and Clairvoyance are the two I am trying to get above 3300 now.

I just calculated that if I roll 100 on all twelve shots, my score (without any luck assists from the charm) will be only 3,408 with my current archery level of 80. Meaning I have no hope of winning this contest, and not much chance of even getting the 3300+ prize.

So yes, luck is a factor, but your archery level is a major limiting factor, too.

Sure, but you'll notice that Scout, with 96 archery, is the only one of them anywhere close to winning the contest. The other three can't even achieve a score of 3800 with only 80 archery.

scout1idf
11-30-2009, 01:56 AM
Currently, if your luck charm would kick in, a score of 3,517 or more would at least win you some AT's (20th place). That would be better than nothing.

Allura breaking 3,300 for the special prize may have been extremely lucky but that doesn't mean that the other 2 aren't going to keep trying. Having only 18 in might and doing it proves that the odds can be beat.

Who knows, maybe the bow will turn out to be something that Mezaryl will pay handsomely for or trade for some weapon/armour.;)

My one guy with 87 archery has two scores of 3500+, but normally averages between 3000 and 3100, and has had scores as low as 2800. Both of my 3500+ scores had two shots with a 160 luck bonus. So yeah, for me it has been all luck. But hey, I'm not complaining; I'll take ATs however I can get them :)

Well I finally broke 3300 with Hawk after leveling his Archery up to 94. A good example of why folks or me at least hoard general xp. The only downer being that if I'd have leveled it up to start with my first try would've put him at about fifth place - if my math is right. C'est la vie and like another sayin', "hindsight's twenty twenty".

As for speculation to the bow I'm figuring it'll be flavor. However, I'm hoping it'll have some more tangible benefits such as bonuses like many of our recent miscellaneous items have.

Incidentally, the series that put him over 3300 had no luck boosts just a good average with no low rolls. Even so with his previous level he would've still been couple score shy of the 3300 mark. Also up to that point the majority of his results with 94 archery was hovering around the 3000 mark.

Finally will have a skill/power solidly in the top ten. It'll be intresting to see how/if that affects his ranking.

I started my latest (and so far - best) attempt with a 100 followed by a luck bonus. In fact, I don't think I had a roll below 90 for the first 8 shots, and a roll below 80 for the first 11 (I think my last one was below 80). Unfortunately my 2 or 3 (I'm not sure) luck bonuses were rather low. Still, I gained three places.

THEORETICALLY, if I picked 100 for each of my 12 shots I can have a score of over 3700 without any luck bonuses. But that would take some [B]incredible lcuk.

Yeah thanks for knocking me "outta the money" - lol. Just kiddin' congrats as I'm just glad to qualify for the longbow with three of my four characters especially my main. Also it seems my earlier math was way off as my first run adjusted for Hawk's recently leveled archery wouldn't have put him on the leaderboard much less around fifth. Actually that score would've been below his current best.

Like Texlaw (and others I'm sure) I'm interested in that Obelisk of Winter and goblin reference. For the record I checked with the guildmaster and he didn't have any info. Also I thought maybe the GM might have already put a reference in the game to it so I checked the node - again no results. Of course I just checked for the obvious "Obelisk of Winter".

Also for anyone interested here's the wiki page (which has the url) for the reference system.

Dang, Kermit didn't even make the top 100, and he had more tries than either Ned or Storel. And Ned got 77th place, but was nowhere near 3300, so no new bow for me. :(

Yay for the experience reward too, was it the same for all the top 20, or did it increase for the higher ranks?
4096 xp to general and archery, then (i think)1024 to general and (i know)1024 to AS&P

They're live? I'll go check.

Congratulations! As one of the top 20 finishers in the second Contest of Bows -- you finished in the #16 spot -- you've won one of Zumryn's grand prizes!

* Collect your prize...

Congratulations on your success in the archery tournament!

XP +4,096 You've been awarded a total of 4,096 Experience...
4,096 xp applied to general...

XP +4,096 You've been awarded a total of 4,096 Experience...
4,096 xp applied to Archery...

You meet with Zumryn and Narsaryn near the statue gallery just inside the gates of the battlegrounds. They both congratulate you on your success in the tournament and Zumryn promptly hands you a pouch containing your prize of Adventurer Tokens.

AT + 16 You've acquired 16 Adventurer Tokens.

"A fine showing, Alanne," says Zumryn. "I'll admit, though, that I wasn't at all surprised to find your name among the leaders. Well done, my friend."

Narsaryn bows before you and tells you that skill with a bow is remarkable.

"I'll confess I haven't seen such a display in quite some time," she says. "It's good to see that the utility of the bow has not been forgotten. It was inspiring to watch you, Alanne."

"Don't go running off just yet," Zumryn says as he produces a worn leather bag and begins rummaging through its contents. "I've something else for you..."

* Please continue...

Zumryn draws a palm-sized black stone orb from the bag and holds it up for you to see.

"Perhaps you've seen one of these before?" he asks. "It's for you, Alanne, and I think you'll find the effects it produces quite to your liking..."

Zumryn hands you the black orb. The instant you take possession of the object, it vanishes with a blinding flash, and a powerful surge of energy passes through your body...

* Please continue...

The surging energy rapidly dissipates, leaving in its wake only a strange tingling sensation that takes several minutes to subside.

XP +3,072 You've been awarded a total of 3,072 Experience...
3,072 xp applied to general...

XP +1,024 You've been awarded 1,024 Experience...
1024 xp applied to All Skills and Powers...

"A bit strange, is it not?" Zumryn grins and slaps you on the back. "I'll tell you -- though don't go spreading it around -- I've got quite a few of those lying about -- under lock and key, mind. Just a small gift for you, Alanne. And again, congratulations on your success!"

You speak with Zumryn and Narsaryn for several minutes before at last bidding them farewell. As you turn to leave, you spot one of your fellow prize-winning contestants moving across the courtyard toward the master of the battlegrounds.

* Please continue...

12/1/09 - Contest of Bows II: Prizes
Prizes for the top 20 finishers in the second Contest of Bows archery tournament are now available. To claim your prize, please visit the Battlegrounds on Iron Crown Isle and select the "Special Battlegrounds Events" option.

Adventurers who achieved a score of 3,300 points or better in the contest will receive a special bow tomorrow (12/2).

This grand bow will provide a bonus when used in checks against your archery skill, and will make "using" your archery skill less prone to failure. It will also provide a bonus when your archery skill is used in random number selections (like those in recent tournament).

Congratulations to all participants and to the top finishers. Well done!

"Placing as high as you did in a contest like that is no meagre feat," says Zumryn. "I was certain you had a fair chance at the top spot, and I think without the constraints of time, you might have pulled it off, Shadowblack. Well done."

More importantly, thanks to the 28 ATs I now have 72 - should be enough for the Tome of Attaiment once it is available (or so I hope). And thanks to the experience I managed to increase Necromancy to 88.

I got the same experience reward as Scout, so my guess is that maybe all the experience rewards are the same. Well, I'm glad I didn't spend more experience to get legendary Archery, or else the archery experience would have gone to waste!

Congrats to all the winners, and like Spencer, I'll try not to be too envious about the others with higher AT rewards. ;)

Considering the GM's penchant for fairness I thought that something like this might happen.

srythadventurer: I'll try again. The rumour is that Zumryn will be offering his grand bows for sale (for gold) to those who didn't win one. What is his game?

Had I known for sure I would've sat on Hawk's general xp that I used to level up his archery. But that would have taken some of the fun out of it and he's still sitting on a mil give or take a thousand. Plus, IF this holds true, my fourth alt won't feel slighted since he was the only one of mine not to get 3300+.

Yeah it just changed as I was getting ready to send a bug report. Someone musta beat me to it.

I wonder if they'll be any differences with the bows. I don't expect any statistical differences but some flavor text when they're being used would be nice. Well off to Moonpath to experiment.

Aside from there and the Kurund in Tarramyre are there any other replayable archery encounters?

Just thought of something. Since the bows can't be equipped I wonder what'll happen if you have an archery encounter with both bows in your inventory.

Once I catch up on my forum surfing I should find out soon enough as I'm headed to Moonpath.

Elrond

I paid the 10K gold and got the bow despite scoring 3412 in the contest. But with over 5 million gold on hand, I'm glad I got rid of some of it!

As to the engravings, I wonder, like Oldschool, if there will be any differences. I don't expect any significant variations. I picked the Star-filled Sky engraving. The Eagle in Flight was tempting; but I went Elvish with my pick!

I just picked up my bow. I'm wicked excited about it. I chose the dragon engraving. It's the theme for this character, so I figured I'd stick with it.

Congratulations to all the top 20 winners. Hopefully next time I can at least crack the top 30!

I'm happy that we get to have the new bows even if we didn't break 3300. :) It's a lot more expensive than the old bows, of course, but that's okay.

My picks

-Scout|-Ulric|-Allura|-Arabel
-a castle in the hills|-a bolt of lightning|-a spider in a web|-a soaring dragon

I just hope it's worth the 10,000 gold for Ulric and Arabel......

I'm just buying Kermit a bow right now. On looking at the list of engravings, my first thought was "What, no frog??" ;)

My second thought was "hmm, 19 different engravings... I wonder if different engravings provide different hidden bonuses of some sort?" I'm also wondering if there's any significance to there being 19. We only have 18 different skills, so probably not some kind of correspondence there...

Funny, I was idly wondering too if different engravings would actually give different bonuses beyond being flavor text, but it's doubtful.

(Noticed a couple of the engravings were similar to the symbols you had to touch when you visit Castle Baleward the first time after finishing Heir to the Flame.)

I chose the different designs just in case there was a difference.

When we got Cloak Of The Wanderer, the GM said that the color made no difference. This time with the bows, nothing was mentioned. Could have been an over-site. Could be something to it. Only time will tell.

Something else makes me wonder.....

From An Adventurer's Journal:

I'll try again. The rumour is that Zumryn will be offering his grand bows for sale (for gold) to those who didn't win one. What is his game?

Is that a hint to something coming up with the bow, or the GM being fair to everyone?

Just something to think about........

My hunch on the different engravings is that they give a "personal feel" to the bow! I doubt that the engraving goes beyond sentimentality.
