View Full Version : 2010 Random Chat
Elrond
12-30-2009, 08:00 PM
How about having 1 thread for our 2010 random chat instead of 1 for each month? That's 11 less threads; and the chat doesn't get cut off.
Mod Edit: This thread used to have a single option, non-public answers poll with the following Question:
Do you prefer one random chat thread for 2010 instead of a monthly thread?
And the answers were
Yes - 7 votes - 53,85%
No - 0 votes - 0 %
Don't care 1 way or another - 6 votes - 46.15%
The poll has been stripped, and the result is kept here for reference.

We'll follow your lead, elendil... you being the strongest (MR-wise) character in the game. Who's gonna argue, eh?
But here's a question for everyone...
How are you going to say the new year: "Twenty ten, or Two thousand and ten, or Two thousand ten?"
Young Ned

"Twenty ten", just like "nineteen ten" in the previous century. I have been saying "two thousand eight, two thousand nine", etc., for the past several years because the double zeros in the numbers make that seem more natural, but once we're past those the "twenty-something" format is just shorter and easier.
Back on topic, that sounds fine to me, Elrond. I'm not sure why we traditionally have a new thread every month, except perhaps that the thread may get dauntingly long for new forum members if we don't.

Not that MR is influencing the forum in any way ;) . And basically, that MR thingie is my last bragging right in the game. Elendil has taken a back seat since I started Galdor (who has a 30% xp bonus to AS&P without having straight 20's in stats). Dang! I wish I could transfer my raffle wins and donated AT's to Galdor!

20-10 for me! I don't think that having a year-chat thread is necessarily better than a month-chat thread; but I got the idea and wanted to see what others thought!

Mostly 20-10 and as for one chat thread I don't see a problem. Truthfully and as it has been said one thread vs. twelve will cut down on cluttered threads. And I agree with Elrond on the continuity issue.
Young Ned brings up a good point in new users but many of the other threads (replayables/mps come to mind) are post heavy as well. Aside from that the only reason I can think of for separate threads is if one has to search for something. However since it's random chat and not anything specific that's a moot point. Plus this forum's search engine and the ability to tag threads makes searching overall a lot easier.

The reason I asked about "how you will call the new year"... language has a habit of finding the easiest route to being understood, and this extrapolates to, "the fewer syllables in a meaning, the quicker and easier to say" (or visa versa)
In the relation to twenty ten or two thousand ten, this has little relevance, but what happens when we get to next year? or the next decade?
There is method to my madness (or visa versa).

On a more serious note than my last post, note that technically the decade does not end until 2011.
Therefore, calling the new year "20-10" and then calling the next year "two thousand eleven" are entirely consistent.

This is entirely a matter of opinion that depends on whether you count from 0-9 or 1-10.
How old is a baby when it's newborn? The first decade of a person's life is counted from year zero and ends the moment they turn 10.
The Gregorian calendar starts each year with a zero, and that's how all our centuries have progressed. The year 1AD actually started 365 days earlier.
but that's just my opinion.
Young Ned
01-02-2010, 01:31 PM
I've been saying for years -- since before 2000 -- that we should all simply declare that the First Century A.D. only lasted 99 years, from A.D. 1 to A.D. 99, thus allowing all subsequent decades, centuries, and millennia to begin when the appropriate digit first rolls over, instead of one year later.
Seriously, who could complain about that? All the people alive in the First Century are looooong dead, and nobody else has any standing to complain... :D

If I recall correctly, the Gregorian calendar never had a year 0, therefore each decade runs 1-10, with the next starting at 11, etc.
Hopefully that means we have until 2013 before the end of the world on the Mayan calendar (lol).
Badstench

I was just trying to simplify the message, but confused it by mentioning "zero". Of course zero is not a number.
Scout actually said it correctly in his post that mentioned a year coming into fruition with its 'ending', not its beginning.
Thus, the end of a century, for example, happens on the 365th day of the 999th year.
But I'm sure we could chase ourselves round in circles with this 'discussion'.
Then I looked at the post about palindromes and Dooli's comment on how English and Americans note the abbreviated dates differently (English say day/month/year; Americans month/day/year), and another anomoly came to mind... the numbering of floors in a building.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the entry level of a building is called the 'Ground Floor'. In England, the floor above that is the first floor, then the second, etc.
But in America, the Ground Floor is also the first floor?
Oldschool
01-03-2010, 07:54 PM
Actually that's correct. Here the floor/entry at ground level is called the ground floor or first floor. The floor above that is the second floor.
Regarding the dates the US Military often uses the "other" format (for example) 01Jan2010.
texlaw1992
01-03-2010, 10:23 PM
Then the European date-writers get their palindromic day on February 1, 2010.
Also, you're correct, in the US "ground floor" and "first floor" are the same, with the exception of buildings with a "lobby," which then have a separate first floor.
Badstench
01-03-2010, 10:40 PM
Crikey! The 'lobby' comment confused me, because I always thought the 'lobby' was on the Ground Floor.
Here's the next conundrum... what about sub-levels. Is the basement sub-level 1 or just "the basement"? I mention this because their are 'basements' and 'sub-basements'... and the bottom of a lift-well is usually at sub-basement level.
Oldschool
01-03-2010, 11:40 PM
Wow indeed (my crikey equivalent ;)).
While we're on the subject lemme throw another curve - many buildings here omit the thirteenth floor from their numbering because of superstition.
Basements more confusion, split-level even more....
What about split level entrances (buildings built partly into hillsides for example). Here the lower level entrance is usually not the main entrance that is the upper one and the lower more resembles a basement. However it's sometimes referred to as the first floor and the main entrance would be the second floor. If they don't do it like that they use a hodgepodge. Sometimes L for lobby and LL for lower level. However I have seen M for main and LM for lower main as well as G for ground and LG for lower ground.
From my experience on basements it's B for basement. Additional levels would be B2, B3, etc..
Also I once was in a building and hit G for Ground floor and went to the Garage which was NOT on the ground floor.
Clear as mud?
texlaw1992
01-04-2010, 06:41 AM
In American buildings with a Lobby, the Lobby floor is usually the ground floor (of course, if the lobby is on a higher floor, the first floor will still be the ground floor).
The first level of a basement is usually just the basement, with sub-levels thereafter (on an elevator keypad, B, B1, B2, etc).
The "G" button in an American elevator almost always refers to a garage - the ground floor would be "1" unless it's the lobby, which would be "L" (also sometimes "GG" for a sub-garage or "LL" for a lower lobby).
I didn't think it was that complicated until we tried to explain it.
Doolipalally
01-04-2010, 10:30 AM
I think I've seen 'M' meaning 'Mezzanine' somewhere. Just in case this wasn't complicated enough! :)
In Russia it's the same as the US: the first floor is the ground floor. We live on the third floor, so if we were in the UK I'd have more stairs to climb. (OK, so most days I take the lift, but I have occasional bursts of energy...)

Just curious TG - I'm taking it that there are no left handed bows in your class.
Also just what kind of bows are you shooting - recurves, compounds, etc.
Have you all determined which eye is dominate. If so or you already know pardon the redundancy of this post. If you happen to be right eye dominant in the long run you'll actually be better off learning to shoot right handed.
Same theory applies to firearms and some other sports.
Another benefit is that most stock bows/guns are for right handed shooters although left handed versions exist or certain right handed ones can be modified for left handed users.
Here's a simple test. Also you can roll up a paper and hold it at arm's length and accomplish the same.

I tried to find a vid of Rev. Dr. Stacy Grosscup who sadly passed away a few years back. Addington learned a lot from Mr. Grosscup who even into his 70's and on would shoot aspirins out of the air with a longbow.

Merchants and artisans were socially above peasants in medieval times.
Even serfs were above peasants.
Medieval laws allowed the lord of the manor to slit open the belly of a peasant and stick his feet inside to warm them after a hunt.
In other words, no fun to be a peasant.

Agree with all of what texlaw says, apart from the bit about serfs being higher than peasants.
'Peasants' isn't necessarily a technical term, so we may all be using it differently here.
'Peasant' to me means anyone who works the land and isn't rich or educated. Could be an agricultural labourer, smallholder, or serf, depending on what era and type of society you're talking about. 'Serf' is more specific: it means a bondsman, an agricultural labourer who is 'owned' by the local feudal lord.
As far as we know, Tysa isn't a feudal society. There's no mention of anyone we come across in the villages or towns being unfree.

'Serf' is a general term used for the concept of an unfree worker in a feudal economy, so yes, that's how we translate the Russian term (which I've just looked up, since I happened to have a large Russian dictionary sitting on the table next to me :), and which is 'krepostnoi').

I didn't actually read the link Dooli gave (yet), but here's a paragraph from my year-end report from last year on Russia. Serfs lived on a landlord’s farm. They “owned” land and could grow anything they wanted to on it (within reason), but couldn’t sell the land. They had to work for their landlord, and pay taxes to him. And a lord couldn’t sell his serfs without a good reason. Serfdom was abolished in 1861 by Alexander II.

A lesson I recently learned is that something you think you know (and have believed to be true all your life) is not necessarily correct.
In this "Age of Information" (brought to you courtesy of the world wide web), there's really no excuse for being ignorant on a subject you attempt to espouse on with conviction when you aren't qualified to do so. If you have access to a computer and the internet, a little bit of effort toward research can save you the embarassment of sounding like a complete twit! (and it may improve your intelligence quotient at the same time).
I was tracking the discussion about peasants and serfdom and was interested to see this comment from thingirl

I don't refute this, because I'm not an expert on Russian feudalism. However, the rights of serfs varied in different kingdoms where the law differed by the decree of the reigning King (or Queen).
In a country not Russia, serfs weren't even counted as 'people'... they were chattels that belonged to the 'landowner' of whatever piece of land under discussion; in this regard, serfs were held in the same regard as a plough or scythe or other farming implement - they were simply tools to be used in maximising the value potential of the land.

You can't actually increase your intelligence quotient by finding out new stuff; Your IQ is your ability to learn, your knowledge is what increases when you learn new stuff.

That word got me thinking further about the subject of hierarchies.
Today we tend to use words like "twit," "idiot," "imbecile" and "moron" synonymously. In actuality, traditionally the words are hierarchial. I don't remember the exact order, but I think a "moron" was considered smarter than an "imbecile" for example.
In making this point, I am not implying that anyone on this forum falls in any such categories (lol).

Actually, there's an article on wikipedia on that. Moron was for IQs 51-75, imbecile 26-50, idiots, 25-. However these terms mainly fell into use because eugenics dictated that such people be sterilized. Nowadays, we thankfully don't do that anymore.

I think the phrase is "absorbing by osmosis."
Speaking of observers, I was arguing an appeal before the US Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals a few years back and there was a group of law students observing the proceedings. On the way out, I heard the instructor tell the students how I had so clearly made a strong argument and was likely to win (an opinion shared by my opposing counsel). I still lost - that's what I get when the Fifth Circuit schedules oral argument in New Orleans the day before Mardi Gras.
So much for osmosis (lol).

Well, if and when you get to calculus, figure out the integral of e to the x (an old standby for anyone whose had calculus).
I posted this Algebra brainteaser at one time, which several people found amusing (for lack of an available key, 2 means squared):
Assume A=B
Then AB = A2
AB-B2 = A2-B2
B(A-B)=(A+B)(A-B)
B=A+B
B=2B
Therefore 1=2.

Therefore 1=2
When B(A-B)=(A+B)(A-B) is changed to B=A+B, both sides were divided by (A-B). If A=B, then A-B would = 0, and dividing by 0 is impossible.

The answer is indeterminate or undefined. As with any fraction (numerator/denominator), the denominator multiplied by some number equals the numerator.
Ex.: 4/2, 2*X=4
So, 0/0, 0*X=0, X=any number (indeterminate) since any number * 0 = 0.

As my firm practices a lot in US federal court, we are normally closed on most federal holidays. We made some changes last year, such as not closing the office on Columbus Day (it's a big holiday for our NY office, but not big in Texas).
I couldn't remember if President's Day was one of those affected, so our managing partner assured me that the office would be open. Well, I'm here, and nobody else is, sigh. Not a big deal, but it's a 30-45 minute commute each way which I could have done without.

Pity New Zealanders... we get a pre-determined number of public holidays per year.
This year, our national day fell on a Saturday.... no day in lieu.
We also take a day to remember our fallen heroes from wars gone past. We call it ANZAC (Australia New Zealand Army Corp). This also falls on a Saturday. No day in lieu.
So 2010 has the working class missing two days off this year, and the same thing next year when those observances will fall on a Sunday.

My mother works for the Federal government. Some of the holidays that fall on a weekend she will get that Monday off. For some holidays she will also get the Friday before the holiday off. It depends on what the holiday is. For some of the holidays the big boss in her office makes the call on the holiday days off. There are times when the holiday time off comes from the main person in Washington.

New Zealand holidays:
New Years Day
The day after New Years day
Province anniversary day (different day for each province/ state)
Waitangi Day (NZ's day of nationhood)
ANZAC day (equivalent to US Veteran's day)
Good Friday
Easter Monday
Queen's birthday observance
Labour day
Christmas day
Boxing day (day after Christmas day)
Province anniversaries, Queen's birthday and Labour day always fall on a Monday.
Waitangi and ANZAC days always fall on a specific date, so if they fall on a weekend, they're lost.

Interesting question Young Ned.
Here in West Virginia we celebrate the anniversary of the creation of the state on June 20, 1863. West Virginia Day is a recognized state holiday but most businesses and banks remain open. Schools and most state offices are closed.
Looks like Pennsylvania recognizes Flag Day.
From wiki re: "Flag Day":
Flag Day is not an official federal holiday (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Federal_holiday), though on June 14, 1937, Rennerdale (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rennerdale), Pennsylvania (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania) became the first (and only) U.S. state (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._state) to celebrate Flag Day as a state holiday (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._state_holiday).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_Day_%28United_States%29#cite_note-philly-0) Title 36 of the United States Code, Subtitle I, Part A, CHAPTER 1, § 110 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Title_36_of_the_United_States_Code#Parts)[2] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flag_Day_%28United_States%29#cite_note-1) is the official statute on Flag Day; however, it is at the President's discretion to proclaim officially the observance.
The week of June 14 is designated as "National Flag Week." During National Flag Week, the president will issue a proclamation urging U.S. citizens to fly the American flag for the duration of that week. The flag should also be displayed on all Government buildings. Some organizations hold parades and events in celebration of America's national flag and everything it represents.
I don't think anybody gets Arbor Day off. Interesting that many states and countries have different Arbor Days or their equivalent on/around the best time for planting trees.

I take the bus to work. Auckland residents have a car mentality that sees our motorways and roads clogged, whereas busses have special lanes to speed people to their destinations.
I have a car, but the bus works out cheaper if I buy a monthly pass-card. It actually took me a while to figure this out, but upon doing so, I've become a big fan of public transport.
I suppose it helps that I catch a bus to work in the wee small hours; I start at 7am, about the same time everyone else is having breakfast. I miss the morning rush traffic.
I finish work at 3pm, so again, I miss the evening rush traffic.
Rush hours don't belong to a designated time anymore. While riding my designated bus, it crosses bridges over motorways clogged with cars and trucks moving at a snail's pace, and I think to myself... "How can people subject themselves to that drudgery?"
I remember a time when I worked on one side of the city and had to commute between there and my home on the other side of the city, and the journey took an average of 2 hours... to travel 30 kilometres, which is about 20 miles.
One day, some inconsiderate ass had an accident on the motorway that brought the traffic to a standstill. It took me 3 and a half hours to get home.
Needless to say, that sucked! Your working day goes from 8 hours to 11 hours!
But this tirade isn't about traffic congestion... it's about my bus pass...
I buy a pass that is good for travel from the date you purchased it to the exact same date of the next month; eg, I bought my first bus pass on the 18th of February, and it was good till the 17th of March. On the 18th of March, it expired.
Before continuing with this story, I should explain that a monthly bus-pass will save me approximately $80 over the course of a month instead of paying single fares every time I get on a bus, and that's just travelling to work and back. I can also use the pass on weekends, so I actually save a heck of a lot more if I use the bus on Saturday and Sunday.
But it occurred to me that I'd purchased my first bus pass in February, the month with 28 days. Every other month has 30 0r 31 days, so I felt a bit cheated.
I moaned about this to my brother, and he looked at me honestly perplexed. He said... with a puzzled look... "How many months have 28 days?
I answered with a returned look that placed him as an idiot, "Just February".
And he laughed at me... "No! They all have 28 days!"

Reminds me of a brother "joke" from 30'ish years ago.
Some may not get this but....
I'm the youngest and considerably so of 5 - 3 brothers, 1 sister and me.
I was young (junior high) age and was deer hunting with two of my older brothers. My brother closest in age to me had some Tink's #69 and opened the bottle and proceeded to smell it. He then told my oldest brother, "This don't smell right."
"Whaddya mean, how the hell do you know if smells 'right'?"
"Well I dunno exactly but I don't smell anything." Btw, It does have a definite and distinct smell.
"Lemme smell it....." as he lowered his head and nose to the opening of the bottle while my other brother still held it.
Even at that age I seen this one coming.....
Then my brother proceeded to unload the contents up my other brother's nose nose by squeezing the bottle firmly while pushing the tip further into his nasal passage.
The rest as they say is history.
For the non hunters - Tink's #69 is doe in estrus. In other words actual real, no artificial ingredients, doe in heat urine.
And it may be one of those you had to have been there but I'm chuckling as I type this.

I was thinking that the Random Chat thread was dieing out because it always seems to be down on the page a ways.
So I did some research and I guess that the post quantity seems about average (this being #155 for 2 1/2 months).

A lot of the legal work I do involves maritme law, usually cargo claims, which are not normally newsworthy. As part of that work, I occasionally seize vessels to enforce maritime liens (they can be sold to provide security for the claim, but the shipowner usually posts substitute security to get the ships released). Not all countries allow maritime liens against vessels (Spain, for example, does not).
A few years ago I seized a paddlewheeler vessel in a small town which was used for parties and so forth because the owners had not paid their mortgage (analogous to foreclosing on a house). I did get calls from the local paper for comment, and per the client's instructions advised a "no comment." I got my name in the paper alongside "declined to comment."
This past week I participated in the arrest of a vessel in a much larger jurisdiction on behalf of the crew, who the owner had not paid in three months (the procedure is the same, but the first time I did it for crew members). This line appeared at the end of the story in the local paper:
"Attorneys for the sailors declined to comment."
For the record, I was the attorney for the sailors who declined to comment (lol).

I don't know if you caught this Badstench, but Pierce Brosnan was on "Ellen" yesterday (my building's cafeteria has its TV tuned to that channel).
Anyway, Pierce Brosnan was talking about a pilot who let him fly a charter plane he was taking. The pilot asked him if he wanted to land the plane, and he said "of course not" since he had no piloting experience. The pilot said "but you always flew planes in the Bond movies!"
After everyone laughed, Pierce responded (paraphrased) "well, what can you do, the pilot was from New Zealand after all" to more laughter.

People who say dumb things aren't necessarily stupid... they just have a dumb moment!
I was talking to an American girl in a chat room at one time. She was bemoaning how hot it was in Arizona (or somewhere). I mentioned that it was winter in New Zealand, and we were having a cold spell... and she asked, "oh my God, what month is it in New Zealand?"
Duh!
I've even had one of "those" moments... while trying to prolong a conversation with a gorgeous Danish girl, I followed up on my comment about her speaking English very well with, "Do you think in English or in Danish?"
When you consider that a bit further, it's actually a ridiculous question.
But Pierce Brosnan's little anecdote is one of those things that can make you want to deny being from the same place as that idiot pilot!

That comment about the Danish girl reminded me of one of my brother's HS friends. He was from Austria and spoke five languages.
My brother asked him "in what language do you dream?" His response was, if he was dreaming about Austria, German; Italy, Italian; etc. I know my wife is the same way - if she dreams of home (Zimbabwe), it's either English or Shona (the local dialect) depending on with whom she's talking.
Fascinating how the human mind works.

I was walking through the kitchen and saw some of my sister's left over cake. I saw it and immediately said "торт" (tort) which is the Russian word for cake.
Anyway, my mom has a friend who was on a missions trip to Russia. He was preaching in Russian and someone was translating into the local language. At the end of the sermon, my mom's friend said that, even though he speaks Russian and English, he thinks in English. Sohe said he was going to pray in English, and that everybody else should just pray in whatever language they think in - their heart language.
I personally don't think asking questions like "what language do you think in?" is bad or dumb. You might actually be surprised.
Badstench

That would make perfect sense, thingirl, if we knew what the speaker's native language is. If his native language is English, then of course that's what he's going to think in... regardless of where he is or what he vocalizes.
My point is, even if you are bilingual or multilingual, 99% of people will "think" in their native tongue, so asking them otherwise is usually moot.

For the last few years I had a client who was an Indian doctor who practiced in Texas. He was a very religious Hindu and lived what Hindus call a life of renunciation, i.e. he lived very frugally (he was basically a monk) and gave whatever money he made to his temple. He owned some properties around town and I helped him with a few legal matters at a significant discount off my usual hourly rate. We became friends and I learned a lot of interesting things from him (if you want a visualy image, think Gandhi with a glass eye).
Anyway, he unexpectedly passed away in January (as befits a monk, he never married and had no children) and his extended family has been in contact with me about legal matters pertaining to his estate. I've now learned that my impoverished client had one bank account alone with $16 million dollars in it, and my client received an additional $3 million check from a real estate deal which he had not deposited before his passing. In addition, he had the various real estate holdings for which he paid cash. Needless to say, I was surprised, as was his family (who had no idea).
I think the family is likely to form a charitable trust to carry on his work (with my firm's assistance), but I'm still hoping they discover a handwritten codicil to his will leaving me a million or two (lol). Just goes to show you, never judge a book by its cover.

Actually, those who study languages intensely often do learn to think in the language they're studying. I remember a German teacher I had in high school telling us how she finally started thinking in German when she lived in Germany for a while. So no, not really moot.

I agree, YN. I had a friend who studied in Germany for a while, and whenever she came back to the UK there was always a readjustment period when she had a tendency to come out with German words in the middle of English sentences, often because there wasn't an exact English equivalent for the German word that her thought processes had come up with.
Of course, there's an argument to be had about the extent to which we actually think in words, or whether words only start to matter at the point at which we want to express those thoughts. But that's a different question :)
One further point: to say that someone's bilingual may not just mean they can speak two languages. lf a child is raised from birth speaking two languages, they're equally at home in both. They don't just have one 'native tongue', they have two.
Elrond

Interesting point; but it would be good to consider how proficient one is in the second language. I think that a person thinks or reacts in one language and not the other depending on the context of the situation and if it is closer to one language than the other. For example, a bilingual reacting or responding to a situation pertaining to his native country might react in his native tongue; but if responding to something closer to the second culture, the language will not be his native tongue.
Another funny thing about bilingualism is that if a person "curses" in one language and not the other, that person will always use his curse language regardless of how close the situation is to his other language.

In closing, I had lots of thoughts in English about the possibilities existent with the Danish girl, but never voiced any of them... the practical upshot being that I failed miserably in my intent, not least because she looked at me like I was an idiot for asking a question which I look back at as being completely ridiculous, moot, 99% recurrent to bilingual, multilingual, telepathic empathists and sign using sentient beings who may (or may not) accept a story in the humourous way it was meant!

Good question Texlaw as I'm wondering that myself as there are many scoring systems.
Another question TG. Is it a true 5 ring target or is it a 10 ring target that is made up of five colors (2 rings per). Normally with these each color is scored not the individual rings and X's are used to break ties.

It's a target that scores X(worth 5)/5/4/3/2/1

Quick tip: Bracers are recommended. You get a bracer, or you get bruises.
I was once using a really powerful bow,(40-pound string, I think.) but as I was aiming, I didn't notice that my bracer was loose and slid up my arm. When I fired that immensely powerful bow, the string struck my unprotected arm REALLY hard. It was hurting for the rest of the day.

I lifted it off from another forum, where a member had it in the signature, but uncited, and I wasn't sure if the quote was originally the member's or from some other source. After trolling Google, though, the original quote turns out to be from Jeff Cooper, the author of The Art of the Rifle, among other works, founder of the American Pistol Institute (later Gunsite Training Center), and one of the developers behind the Modern Technique of the Pistol.
The actual quote is below. Note that the only difference between it and the one in my signature is that "sword" is replaced with "rifle":
The rifle itself has no moral stature, since it has no will of its own. Naturally, it may be used by evil men for evil purposes, but there are more good men than evil, and while the latter cannot be persuaded to the path of righteousness by propaganda, they can certainly be corrected by good men with rifles.
So now that I know, time to give proper credit! As long as it doesn't ruin the flow, which it just did. Sigh, the sacrifices of citation...

12 rounds of 5-arrows from 20 yards (I think that's what you asked :))
And thanks.

Great!!! :) Nice range and 12 shot strings - impressive as shorter (fewer arrows) strings are much "easier" imo. More so when starting to shoot.
Pardon my mangling of terminology as I intermingle my firearms/archery terms which can be confusing. Strings and rounds to name a few.

Sorry to "switch gears" in the conversation, but I came across another strange occurrence. I just had the rather grim displeasure of having to give a negative rep', for the first time in my time on the Forums.(Don't ask details, because for me to give any would be disrespectful; equivalent to gossiping, essentially.) After doing so, it said "Thank you for deducting reputation from this user."
Does that strike anyone as "odd," or is it just me?

Well, I'm assuming that the forum is written to assume you're dishing one out for a perfectly good reason.

It strikes me as a bit odd, but I suppose it's saying 'thank you for bothering to comment'.

Maybe the forum mechanics agreed with your reason for the negative rep.

I prefer to think it's thanking you for giving a negative rep instead of hogging time writing a largely pointless reply to the offending post in question, and possibly instigating a flame war over hurt feelings.
But that's just me. ;)

Yes, yes, I know of no middle term. Either I'm gone for weeks at a time or I'm showing off my powers full-time. Hope I won't get smote too hard for this one...

this is to test upload attachments as reported by TG
EDIT: It seems you can post attachments in this forum as a regular user, TG. Maybe it was a question of the size of the image? I've checked your permissions in this forum and they're the same as mine (with this one, of course)
EDIT2: Nice pic, isn't it?. I'm testing the reputation bar matter, and will either fix it or document it on Forum Updates when I'm done

Why should I? If you can't spam on "Random chat", where?
It's a picture of a nebula called Helix Nebula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Helix_Nebula). They call it "The Eye of God"
Check also the Cat's Eye Nebula (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cat%27s_Eye_Nebula), if you like beautiful astronomical images. And The Mote in God's Eye (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mote_in_God%27s_Eye) for excellent related "hard" science fiction.
By the way, I've restored the now harmless green reputation bars and explained it on Forum Updates (http://www.srythforum.com/showthread.php?p=31559#post31559). Thanks again for noticing.

I doubt it. He deleted his account from the forum last time.
Also, at the time he didn't know how much everyone wanted him to be here. Tallys Apprentice was just a way to look in and be anonymous.

Expounding on Texlaw's post in the "Change on OLD forum..." thread. Btw Texlaw, thanks for the feedback in the thread.
I remember when FULL service was normal. Still I got a chuckle picturing the filling station attendant in Spain. Filling station.... that term may date me as well, lol.
One of my brothers used to live in Oregon which has NO self service gas - attendants only. And if I'm not mistaken New Jersey is the same.
I know my brother said in Oregon safety and the economy (jobs) was the concern. I'm also guessing the fuel companies may have done some lobbying. However, I think it's required that the self service stations pump gas for either certain customers or those requesting it. I know most places here have signs informing customers to request it if they want.
