View Full Version : Help - Necromancy?

I searched and didn't see this anywhere so apologies if I am asking a repeated question:
I didn't look at any spoilers or such when I started playing a few days ago. I've gotten pretty good so far, but I read something that said you could only get necromancy from character creation or the start-up quest.
So, I screwed up the start-up quest and didn't get necromancy - I have this pretty blue gem that I can do nothing with.
Is there any other way to get necromancy or do I need to start completely over?
(Which I really really really don't want to do if at all possible!)
Thank you so much!

Yes, you can get it from
the murk quests
It's not really a disaster if you do since you only lose a great deal of xp.
Or you can buy it for an obscenely large amount of money from
the grey circle
And depending on how far along you are, it may be expedient to simply start over.
The blue gem is pretty much worthless.

No, you CAN'T get Necromancy from the Grey Circle - it's one of the 2 poewers you can't buy there. But you can buy it from the Collective (but that takes ATs)
If you haven't done any events that are no longer available you should restart.

What I meant was that you could get it from the murk, but because you didn't get the free starter power, you would have to foot the extra xp for a power you normally would get for free from it.

Hmm, sure looks to me like you meant you can buy it from the Grey Circle. Your explanation seems rather to be referring to this:

The only way your explanation makes sense is if the "it" in "you can buy it for an obscenely large amount of money from the grey circle" was referring not to Necromancy, but to the power you'd normally have gotten for free from the Murk that you'd now have to pay for since you got Necro from the Murk. But your actual post never explicitly mentioned that other power, and the only power that HAD been mentioned explicitly in the entire thread was Necro, which is why everyone thinks you meant Necro could be purchased from the Grey Circle.
Do you see now why English teachers are always marking up vague pronouns like "it" when they have no antecedents? (No nouns preceding them to which they refer.) It's because you can confuse the heck out of anyone reading your writing when you do that... :)

Not necessarily the ATs, just the xp.

I also skipped the intro adventures by accident and had the same concerns about starting over. While it does cost some extra xp to get whatever power in the Grey Circle that you could otherwise get for free in the Murk, in the long run it all washes out. There are several opportunities for specific xp to Necromancy and mine (largely with specific xp) is actually higher than the powers I acquired earlier. In other words, unless you're at the very beginning, don't worry about restarting.
I didn't do The Wandering Undead, which ultimately cost me 50,000 gold and 2 ATs.

If you get necro from the murk, you won't have that problem though.

When I first joined and went into the building with the green door, it was late and in my exhaustion I read that each new skill would be 300,000 gold each. As I had very little gold at the time, I thought "that's impossible" and gave serious consideration to starting over. I felt better when after sleeping I saw it was only 30,000. Is it 50,000 for powers? I never bought any - got necromancy from the Murk and shadow magic from Silverwysp.

The cost for both powers and skills at the Adventurer Collective goes up the more powers and skills you have (as separate groups). For powers it's your current number of powers * 5000 gold. So it could be 50k gold if you already have 10 other powers (and shadow magic is not available at the Collective, so this is not only unlikely, you would have to do EVERYTHING wrong for it to cost that much).
The 2 AT doesn't change though, and is really the only part of the cost that hurts in the long term, since gold is fairly easy to get.

Not when I first read it. Even after reading your explanation of what you meant, it still made no sense. I was in the process of writing my reply when I finally figured out a way in which your explanation could make sense. So I did NOT "clearly know" what you meant -- I eventually figured it out through hard work and deductive reasoning, which is not a level of effort you can expect from the vast majority of your readers.
You managed to confuse the heck out of me and most of the other respondents to this thread, and yet you seem to think I'm nitpicking about this? I'm the one who should be saying SHEESH!

Yes, but...
Maybe I should have worded that better.

This sort of stuff (Zm's bad wording) happens to me in RL all the time.... And it only gets worse when I try to defend what I'm saying.

Unless restarting would make you lose a seasonal gift (i.e. obelisk of winter), then restarting would be slightly better than swallowing the loss and moving on; since you can get the power elsewhere (as pointed above).

i keep reading that you can get free necromancy in the wandering dead opening scenario, but i have tried this several times and cannot work out how it is done
i have tried different options but i have never managed to get it. am i missing smething obvious or is it random, wik says there is a chance of getting it?

If you don't have Necromancy and make the right choices you get it for sure.
Hint:
Be nice and just and return that which is not yours...

Nothing random but getting Necromancy depends on your choices.
Short version.
Investigate the hut then fight the undead and hand the gem over.

If you return the gem you will get an item and the text will say that you feel somehow different (or something like that), and if you check your powers you'll see that you now have Necromancy level 1.
Of course, all of that is true only if you can use powers. If you can't use powers you get only the Stone Skull Amulet the man gives you.

Lemme go run it with a test character but the only thing I can think of is if your character did NOT have magical abilities or powers on creation.
EDIT: Ninja'd again.

Just ran it and nothing has changed so your character must not have magical abilities. If so it'll allow you to choose a power on startup.
Good luck.

Also noticed you're AG so you may wanna take a look at the wiki especially the start up guide. Just be warned it can be spoilerish.

Also the hints thread here, http://www.srythforum.com/showthread.php?t=99 as well as the docs on the homepage. The playing tips in the last section of the docs are especially informative.

If you don't have powers, deleate that character NOW!
EDIT: Does that make you feel better, Oldschool?
