View Full Version : How About a Defense Skill?

So I just had this idea as I'm going through Ashlyre fighting Oakaruk: Why don't we have a Defense skill? It could work similarly to Weaponry Skills in that you can gain some SP every 10 levels, and it could randomly trigger an awesome defense move and absorb the enemy's attack damage.
What do you think?

I'd always thought that weaponry and unarmed was a measure of defense as well as offense...
BUT
I think a defense skill would add variety to the game. It would probably help break the mold of Fighter/Mage that's the "best" path to take. While Sryth will probably remain a Fighter/Mage game at heart, there could be something like say, aggressive "strikers" (someone good with RPGs help me, what's a guy who maxes offense) or defensive "tanks" as different methods to play the game. Right now, Aggressive and defensive are trivial in determining fighting styles.

Good idea, Jim! It would be interesting to see a defense skill that gives "dodging" turns at a certain rate depending on this def skill combined with unarmed.

I never got the dodging boots or whatever they're called, but a skill with the equivalent benefits would be a good idea. Time to become a Master of Sinanju.

I thought of a use for horsemanship and wanted to run it by y'all. Depending on your level your horse would engage as would a knight's warhorse. You select horsemanship. Your charger rears up and strikes your foe with its front hooves. Your foe has died. Or your charger turns and kicks your foe. Your foe is severly wounded. Your level of horsemanship would determine the effectivnes of the attack and the amount of damage done.

Interesting thought. It could also be related to your mount's disposition towards you. The more it likes you, the better it fights on your behalf.

If disposition ever gets implemented, anyway...

Wait....... you mean your mounts don't already "lovingly adore" you?
C'mon, you all did buy that basket of apples and carrots from that peddler in Kolnia before the Oakaruk razed the place didn't you?
If not erm..... wait I'm thinking of that Large Black Hat, Purple Feather, Iron Cloverleaf, Bright Green Jacket and Set of Stone Dice. But a basket of apples and carrots might do the trick if we could find one. ;)

Man, the Srythian version of Lucky Charms sounds a lot less "magically delicious" than our version... ;)

ROTFL........ Probably shouldn't admit this but I've forced my characters to don or carry every "charm" at various times. And with St. Patrick's Day approaching I'll probably be yet again donning that Bright Green Jacking and toting that Iron Cloverleaf and Set of Stone Dice around.
After all for two Halloween's running I've tramped around wearing a Large Black Hat.
Boy am I glad the GM doesn't have an extreme fondness for Red Herring.

I like the idea as well, Jimy...the best "defense" power is Fortification (in my opinion) and it does not always work exactly right.

If carrying/wearing those items didn't do anything last St. Patrick's Day didn't do anything, why do you think it would this time? Same with the Large Black Hat for Halloween. Seems to me it would make more sense to try those items on other days, rather than the one day you know doesn't work...

Because a lot of the GMs holiday stuff is limited events and many aren't repeated. Plus I tend to be a bit paranoid about this type of stuff. Besides you just never know.:)

New content and abilities is always cool but wouldn't you just want to chew nails if you spent days getting the dodge boots and a new skill that everybody gets for nothing completely invalidates them?

Kinda like that "new" Wanderer's Cape that made those folks that chose Iakor's Cape wanting a "do-over".
Several other items have been relegated to dust collecting conversation pieces due to upgrades.

Tell me about it! But, this Halloween helm (yes, I'm wearing a pumpkin on my head.) kind of makes it up... Sort of...

Talk about chewing nails. I wished I'd have taken advantage of some of that Halloween gear including the helms - ESPECIALLY with the alts.
One of the times Tallys's had some nice selections on the bottom half of his price list.
Definitely like to see some similar priced limited event St. Paddy's Day gear.
C'mon GM I know you're lurking about.;)

Both interesting ideas. However, Weaponry/Unarmed both boost MR, and MR is meant to reflect general fighting skill (which includes defense). So I would prefer it if you could simply gain SP every 10 levels.
