What continental affiliation do you claim?
Depending upon your personal preferences that could be where you are from, where you are currently at or where you consider yourself from.
Be as specific (or as vague) as you want. The choice is yours.

North America and specifically West Virginia in the United States.
While I've traveled elsewhere and while I've resided in different parts of the state I've never resided anywhere else.
Depending on the interest and poll results I may post another more specific poll.

Oceania.... which loosely describes the antipodes.
Some would put New Zealand in the South Pacific, which is accurate, but others would call us part of the Australasian territory.
I'm part Maori, mostly English by descent.
New Zealand is currently debating whether we should change our flag; Our flag is dominated by the Union Jack and the Southern Cross, and looks very similar to Australia's flag. This is a good enough reason to change it.
Arguments against cite history, and the soldiers who died protecting the flag. I think that's a crock of shit. The soldiers didn't die for a flag... they fought for the rights of democracy and freedom. admittedly, they did so under the guise of the Mother land (England), and that should be recognised.
But the bottom line is... they fought and died to give future generations a place to live without tyranny and despotism, and most of them were just ordinary blokes who lived a world away from where the troubles were happening.
They died to give their children a better life, and that has nothing to do with a piece of cloth.
Through them, we earned the right to stand as an independent nation, proud and free! We need a flag that portrays our country as being independent.
I firmly believe that the best flag ever created is the Canadian flag. I'd like to see New Zealand have something identifiable with our country, like the maple leaf.
As an aside, The South African flag was never meant to be. It was created in a hurry to "fill the gap" when apartheid was abolished. It was the first flag to incorporate eight colours, instead of the usual 3 or 4.
It is now one of the symbols that stand for equality and freedom.

Although I've lived here since August of 1981 (by way of NYC, NJ, and Virginia), I still think of myself as a New Yorker. However, New Yorkers think of me as a Texan (lol).
It's been ages since I've been to your neck of the woods Oldschool, but I remember taking a car ferry across the river in SE West Virginia (I don't remember the name of the big city in that area - is it Wheeling?)
I imagine it must have been a thrill when newly-elected Virginia governor Douglas Wilder in 1989 tore down the wall between Virginia and West Virginia - I understand the Wheeling McDonald's was jammed (lol).

Well, at the risk of controversy, I'm one of those Brits who's quite happy to say that the UK is part of Europe. Not that I've ever really understood where else it could be part of...

And at the risk of greater controversy.... isn't about time we gave up the notion of "belonging" to a geographical co-ordinate on a map?
I'm a Human who is the product of millions of years of evolution, living on a planet that developed the exact conditions necessary for my survival.
We have to get past the tribal miasma that is us beholden to a specific place. It's just rock and soil shaped to the movement of techtonic plates, various land masses separated by oceans.
When we stop acting like gang members and get over the fact that our precious piece of turf is no different to the turf our neighbors stand on, only then can we embrace a global thinking.
Do away with national anthems. Get rid of territorial insignia (flags). Throw open the borders and greet your brothers/ sisters who live differently. Embrace the new culture of mankind and greet their distrust with open arms. Assimilate, accept, and tolerate.
It begins with the sharing of ice-cream, preferably of a berry flavour.

Lol.... Well if it was a big city (even by our meager standards) it probably was Wheeling which sits on the Ohio River although it's in the northern panhandle which is bordered by Ohio and Pennsylvania. But as you say it's been 'ages'.
A lot of West Virginia's borders are rivers (boy do I remember geography/social studies and hand drawing those state maps with counties by memory :( and wishing I was in Colorado or Wyoming) so it may have been somewhere else. Although I'd say it was probably the Ohio or possibly the Potomac.
There is still one active ferry on the Ohio at Sistersville (definitely not big even for WV) that I'm aware of and possibly more.

It had to be some time in the 1970s. Memories are funny - I have a distinct recollection of the car ferry ride, but little about before or after, although after did involve a trip to McDonald's (lol). However, I think we may have gone into West Virginia from the direction of Roanoke (Virginia). I'll have to ask my parents to make sure.
In any event, I don't envy anyone in the region right now with all the snow. Not a problem down here, although our temps are in the 40s (fahrenheit) and they're usually in the 70s by now.

Mak's from and/or in Greece if I'm not mistaken.
Just wondering, especially in light of your post, about Eremaeni? If it's a real world place (many members hint, joke, roleplay, etc... locations) where is it?

Oh, cool. I wrote a poem once in 8th grade, it got an honorable mention. Probably not as good as one of badstench's poems, though. XD

Writing is NOT actually one of my strong points. Yeah. Typing and helping and chatting are, but not actually writing. Congrats on getting published. Your profile says you're 15, soon to be 16. Maybe there's hope for our generation yet. Well, if we don't all get killed by oil first.

Oh, I thought you were talking about the recent oil spill in the gulf of mexico. They're using hair(All kinds, human hair, animal hair, etc) to build a giant nylon net to soak up all of the oil.
thingirl
05-26-2010, 09:28 PM
Ahh. I was, and I get it now. Hair isn't nylon, although mine sometimes behaves like it... And oil isn't fish, although it's in pleanty of them.
Dariel

Hmm, well, I'm fairly certain I read something about hair and a net. Maybe it wasn't nylon.
