View Full Version : Adventure Synopsis
Elrond

Taking from Badstench's comment about adventure hints in another thread, how about suggesting to the GM an adventure synopsis for each update. This synopsis would include:
- Brief description (2-5 lines)
- Starting location
- Requirements (items, previous adventures, skill or power levels, etc.)
- Difficulty (highest check, standard or common checks, enemy MR
- Alternative info (advice like "boss has 1K SP, advisable to recharge QS heals before embarking)
- Rewards (general outlines of rewards as well as mention if items are awarded or not)

This would really kill any sort of immersion/exploration aspect of the game. No offense but I think this information belongs in the wiki, not in the game. Since almost all quests can be repeated with no consequence why should we need to know exactly what to expect for new content.

No offense taken :) ; but the spoiler potential is in the last 2 items. Would that make a synopsis of items 1-4 acceptable?

I would say:
- Brief description (2-5 lines)
If you mean what shows up before you start the adventure, then yes, that would be nice. If not, then I like the way it is now.
- Starting location
Doesn't he already include that most of the time? Anyway, it'll show in your Finder. But I wouldn't mind that in the announcement.
- Requirements (items, previous adventures, skill or power levels, etc.)
If there is an item or power that you must have or you won't be able to continue, then yes. Otherwise, just the previous adventures.
- Difficulty (highest check, standard or common checks, enemy MR
- Alternative info (advice like "boss has 1K SP, advisable to recharge QS heals before embarking)
- Rewards (general outlines of rewards as well as mention if items are awarded or not)
All three of these I'm gonna say no to. Unless, (for the description) it's vague (Not advised unless you are a master mage...). Even then it and the other two should have a feature that you can set so that you can see them or not.

I agree with Delta that most of this should be in the wiki, not the game itself.
As far as I can see, this idea started because of the problem of how to tell whether your character is ready to tackle an adventure. Instead of all this detail, how about a colour-coding system, similar to the colours used for indicating the strength of an opponent? So green would mean good for newbies, grey would be the next step up, all the way up to black, meaning 'for high-level characters only'. The difficulty level could be worked out based on the MR of opponents, difficulty of skill checks etc.
(Actually, I don't think there's much wrong with the way the game is at the moment, but I'd rather see a simpler hint system which people could choose to ignore than too much information in the game itself.)

Well we do have somewhat of a partial system in place although it's actual prereq's and not recommendations - the guild screen.
Kinda hard for me to have perspective since I was fortunate to find the forum and wiki early on. Which not only helped me with specific content but educated me on the 'abandon screen' and not saving.
Because of finding both early I don't know that such an in-game system is necessary. And to be honest I worry about spoiler potential (even with tags) as well as how much of the GM's time each would take. Even more so if he'd reverse engineer (I know that's the wrong term but y'all know what I mean) all the current content.
From my experience making sure players know about the wiki and the forum and their benefits would serve much the same purpose. Recent changes such as the forum plug when saving have helped but more could be done.
Of course even if something as Elrond states is implemented the above would still have its own merits.
Something along the lines of the following.
A short intro with accompanying links on account creation or better yet put it behind the blue door and tie it to the xp subscribing bonus. To further this along the links could go to specific "Welcome" threads/pages on the forum/wiki. Those sections could give a brief synopsis of each site with spoiler warnings. As well as a spiel about the "Sryth Learning Curve" and the benefits of each site on helping flatten it out. Both sites (especially the wiki) already have something along these lines.
I know from previous forum discussions that many members wish they would have found the forum/wiki much earlier.
Just a thought.
