Maybe it's a good thing, because the forum is so full of useful threads new users tend to post first on any of them or in Help, where they are appropriately introduced and welcomed :p.

"All roads lead to Rome"
One of the thing's I've noticed in the game are the number of "character names" that are new. This could be explained by supposing that current members have multiple characters, but I've also looked at the "user names" against the new chaaracters.
Sryth seems to be doing okay for itself, which doesn't surprise me given the increase in content from when I first joined.
Still, a question for the GM in a future interrogation might satisfy our observations.
As far as the forum membership goes, I have a more direct means of tabulating its popularity.... we are privy to seeing the number of members who have signed up, and also the number of 'active' members.
Both of these numbers have no correlation to the number of people who post, whether by query, comment, or observation.
To me, it doesn't matter if we have a thousand active members or ten. What I'm interested in is the quality of the contributions, and I can honestly say that I have not been disappointed to date.
I used the quote, "All roads lead to Rome" as a header to this post for a simple reason... the new players who get caught up in the game will eventually discover the forum as a site for help. they'll visit, and in doing so, they might join the forum as a member.
Our job is to welcome those new gamers and enquirers after knowledge, to make them feel valued, and to answer their questions to the best of our ability.
If they like the reception comittee and feel their time hasn't been wasted, they just might come back.

Just that I wouldn't think casual Sryth players would necessarily register on Wikia, so several in one week seems like a good thing for a growing player base.

Yeah. I almost never visit the wiki. Been playing the game for I think 2 years, but I rarely go onto the wiki. Not registered, either.

Hello All,
First, I and my character (Gretten Bengaard) would like to extend our thanks to those who've responded to our posts asking for help and to all who have helped me simply by having contributed to the forum previous to my discovery of it. Not only is this game entertaining and addictive, but it appears to have a friendly, helpful and informative community supporting it. You guys/gals rock!
The short of it: I'm house-sitting for a few months and find myself not only with a laid-back work schedule, but plenty of free-time in a semi-isolated VT locale. Perfect conditions to click my little heart out and become a Sryth junkie. It's been a bit over a month and the subscription fee has already been worth it!
Three months, and no one introducing themselves. I'm not sure if this is a good thing or a bad thing, because I still see the occasional newest member.
Or is the Forum, perhaps, slowing down...
Still becoming familiar with the boards, Lightbringer. When the forum protocols, take a message.
Now if you'll all excuse me, there is a certain Old North Wood that refuses to divulge ALL it secrets.......

Just decided to Gate in here for a quick hello, seems like a pretty cool place.
Sryth has been the source of my recent Internet addiction for the past two or three months, which have definitely not been dull. I probably wouldn't have made it quite so far in the game without the wiki though, I definitely appreciate its usefulness.
I've started to take advantage of some of the discussion threads recently, such as the Rhaknar's Mad Walkthrough, information regarding Tar Blobs and other things, so I finally went ahead and made an account.
I'll just keep this brief for now. Happy holidays, everyone!

...have only been paying Sryth for about 2 months now and have found the wiki and forums to be most helpful! Thanks Scarbrow for the great wiki and everyone who added to it to make it simpler for us novices.
My only small gripe about Syrth is the many items i've acquired over the last 2months and wondering what to do with all of them? And then, sadly, the several loose ends I've run across trying to amass 100% completion, only to find I cannot complete what I've been working on. Nor remember how I got there? I'm stuck on the glowing rusted sword... many of you wizend legends may have remember that quest, for us novices, I always ask myself..."did I miss something here?"
The game has been a source of pride in completing many varied quests and sidelines. And many frustrations when one rolls in combat: 1,3,2,2,10,3,1... and get your backside handed to you. All wrapped nicely in a bow...even!
All in all it has been a great stress reliever to lose oneself, if but for an hour, in a different world than my own.
I like to think of myself as funny, though I often delude myself.

You're welcome ;)
You'll get used to the loose ends. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as "100% completion" for this game. Fortunately, that is partly because of the frequent updates and seasonal scenarios, which make it all the more fun.
And as for all of those items... join the Residence Hoarders (http://srythforum.com/group.php?groupid=31)! Nice items, so pretty, so shiny, so... useless, but with such fond memories attached...

Hang in there Syrius once you've been playing a while and get through most of the single run content you'll get an idea of what's safe to unload.
If in doubt hold onto it because short of GM intervention (which he's usually very understanding and forgiving about thankfully) there's no way to recover sold/lost items.
There's a short post in the Hint's thread of a few items not to sell/trade etc...
I've kept nearly every unique item with my main and fairly recently sold some stuff with my alts since their gold was low and I needed a quick shot in the arm for Varkyn's Ring of Motley Wonder. Still I tried to be cautious with what I sold - hopefully I was. One good thing is many items you can store and fairly recently the GM tweaked things so that undroppable items don't actually add to our encumbrance although the display currently still lists an encumbrance value.
That rusty sword is still a work in progress aka "loose end" and is probably the longest standing one we have - well before my and many current members times it seems.
You mention the wiki which can help with specific items/quests which you've probably already figured out. But there is also a Loose Ends page. Probably redundant since you know about the wiki and it has it's own warnings but I always like to mention a spoiler warning nonetheless. Here's the Loose Ends page, http://sryth.wikia.com/wiki/Loose_Ends

Ninja'd on my welcome post as I was in another window tab reading your character's backstory. Nicely done and I was going to comment on your handle in my earlier post and how it reminded me of Havoc's sig (http://www.srythforum.com/member.php?u=3) (see "about me" in his profile for his sig). Well actually his "O", but wasn't sure if that was "correct".
After reading your fiction post I'm thinking that it might indeed be a good "interpretation".

Welcome to the forum - if your character is a fledgeling one, lacking in stamina to withstand the MP bosses' devastating special attacks, and you need a few Killing Blows, let me know, I'll help. I'll take the Top Damage, and you can reap the KB. Just square the schedule, and ask ahead. (Do so by private message addressed to me, so we don't advertise to 'poachers' the 'free KB.')

I guess I had better gather up the rest of it and brew some ale to toast you all with.

Good on you! And good on those who did that! :)
Offer still stands though, and as long as your character needs significant strengthening - there is a LOT of XP needed! And the advantage of letting me know, is that you would know ahead of time it's meant for you, no need to hesitate.
(And... well, I thought you'd refer to pumpkin pie, of which I've heard more than ate. :) But I doubt I ever had pumpkin ale, and though not a beer drinker, I do like an ale occasionally, as they're tastier than beer, so I'm intrigued: I'd like to taste it. :))

[edit 3] And since I brought up my character's, and saw OS mentioning something about yours, and Havoc's siggie, I'll have a go at yours: would it be 'that which / the one who precedes shadow,' or 'that which / the one who fights / is against shadow?' Or something else altogether?

I dug out my Herodotus and confirmed your character's name is formed from two greek origin terms then got sidetracked reading about variant names for Apollo. So many directions two words can lead us on toward.
As to relationship with the shadows for my own character's name - subsumed by the shadow yet never consumed probably expresses it best.

Well, you've got the source, certainly! Though the given name might be Cypriot in origin, while the two words composing the surname are both attributed to Scythian, and the combination referencing the Amazons, I believe, for whom the Scythians seemed to have great respect - and according to Herodotos (-us), love as well, at least in one particular case, of two tribes... joining. :)
And formidable (or not) as Sigynna may be, he cannot quite compete with gods such as Apollo, I'm sure, so I understand your distractedness. :)
And so, I'll (arrogantly? - not intended :)) draw the conclusion that Antumbra's name is far closer to 'preceding the shadow.'
But 'subsumed without being consumed by it' sounds and is much better.
Enveloped in, but not part of it, not a 'shadowy character' in the least - that much is already clear from the prelude of her story... Thank you.
No ale, but have a cookie - pumpkin-flavoured, if your imagination prefers it that way. ;)

Bugger! :) We're speaking of Sigynna's name. :)
But I might be allergic to that for all I know, if I'd care to know. :)
Still, for the record repeated... :)
- 'tetra-' -> 'four' (Gr)
- '-capilla-' -> 'hair' (L)
- '-[c]tomist' -> 'cutter' (Gr) ... or, in this case, 'splitter'
'Splitter of hair into four' - comes from the French expression equivalent to 'splitting hairs,' 'Couper les cheveux en quatre.' :p You took French, Tex, you should have found better reference using Google, than acne. ;)

Sterno is useful if you need a flame in a pinch and have no fuel, it burns slow so you can cook a meal and possibly warm your hands and nostrils a wee bit before it is completely consumed.

I still get this tickling at the back of my mind when I read Dooli's full handle, Doolipalally. I keep thinking it's got some movie or literature tie in but then I think maybe I'm getting it confused with Capote's Holly Golightly since (to me) they have a similar "ring".
Re: Sterno also known as canned heat.....
Good for ultralight backpacking (as are solid fuel tabs like Esbit) especially if used in a pop can stove although there are commercial Sterno/canned heat (and solid fuel tablet) stoves available as well.
Anyhoo..... some musical references....

Which is where the group Canned Heat took their name from and their song On the Road Again (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aQPrDrDndh4) was inspired by Johnson's Big Road Blues (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VU6eLg3GWuA).

Meh... I was being facetious. But wasn't too inspired at the time, as the forum lost a humane human voice: so I failed. No biggie. Sterno. It's GGGGGRRREAT!
Don't leave home without it.
[edit] Oh, with my sense of loss and all, I omitted this: :)

Greetings Srythians, *raises a mug of palo in a toast*
I'm an old lady from Sweden who recently took up playing Sryth after spotting the name on another game forum. Not being mathematically inclined I should have named my chars Trial and Error.... with Error being my main :) I'll make no promises about saving the world but might take up hanging at an Inn crocheting hideous gremlin pajamas. Lordina is my main at the moment.

Hello, Deandra, welcome to the forum.
Trial and Error... :D Not bad names - whether separately or together.
"< 1m ago - Trial & Error was seen travelling in the direction of ... "
"< 1m ago - Trial & Error has slain a highwayman ... "
"Xarakk is no more. It was Trial & Error that ultimately slew the beast... "
:)

As for being, or not, mathematically inclined: if and when rolling a character, just 'roll for the stars,' if time and patience allows (or until you get sick of rolling :)). :)
20s, 19s, as few18s as possible for those stats that include everything from 'Might' to 'Luck' - with a bit of that (luck) no 18s either - and you'll have nothing much to fret about.
Good luck in your virtual adventuring. :)

Just thought I'd mention that you're not the only Swede here. When and if Meduwyn rejoins Sryth and the forum, you two should exchange some PMs as she now lives in Stockholm.

I bet no one can guess what my name means.
Ooh, is this an incomprehensible name competition? :)
My name means "He Who Has the Sterno" in Antarctican. It's very popular there.
Mine means "The Ned who is younger than the Ned who is older." :D
(That is, Ned was the son of a fellow who was also named Ned -- what a coincidence! -- so the townsfolk started calling them Young Ned and Old Ned to make it clear which one they were talking about. Since talking about other people is one of the principal activities in towns that size, you can see that properly distinguishing between people is of vital importance.)
Also, welcome to Deandra and Antumbra (are you sure that doesn't mean "shadow of an ant"? ;)) and welcome back to taproot!

Oh, that's just weird - mostly because you made that comment today, now, coincidentally - but I won't explain why... Or can't. Or rather not. :)
All right, so this might be confusing - but what's new in that? :) Let's just chalk it up to one of TC's "WTFisms," as Tes termed it. :)
But nothing at all inherently 'off' in your question, Young Ned - just don't try to vivisect my post, please. :) I was just amused by a coincidence and popped out another non sequitur. :)

Pyjamas.....? Considering the poster is Dooli who is very learned and English I googled pyjamas which as speculated is the "other" English spelling of what Americans normally spell pajamas.
I'm guessing the other differences being you catch zed's in pyjamas and z's in pajamas. ;)
One more argument for certain home schooled members that the Sryth forum is a nice supplement to language arts. ;)

Welcome back, NathanH ... wait... "few years of Sryth holiday?!" I was Sryth-born barely a year ago, Sigynna even less than that - why am I welcoming back? :)
To me you're as new as most everything: hello and welcome. :)
TG, you left me out... I supply "TC English and non sequiturs 102" (aka. WTFism :D Thanks, Tes. :)) - oh, well, that's not on most curriculums-curricula (old Italian song ;)), I suppose.
(And that's British, ducky... oops... am I morphing?... Have I taken upon myself to step in someone else's shoes?...
I'll miss father and his self-professed fickleness, bless his soul...)

And where in sooty h... are you and your pretend-dark (but in reality good) soul, Blackcrowe?...

I've already posted a few comments on other threads in the Adventurer's Lounge, but I'm Johnbarard. I played Sryth a few years ago, then quit (I had a lot of other games to focus on and I can only play one game at a time for some reason). The game always seemed to come up in my mind, however, so I started a new account about a month ago and am almost caught up with my old character ( I may even be farther already, but I don't know). Anyway, there's my Sryth history.

I see others have started threads to introduce themselves, but I thought I'd just pop in to say hi in this one.
Just discovered Sryth two days ago entirely by accident. Played around a bit with a couple of characters yesterday and I'm absolutely thrilled. This game definitely scratches an itch I've had for many years.
I spent almost as much time on the wiki yesterday as I did actually adventuring, and it was immensely helpful in getting familiarized with the game and setting (though you have to be really wary of spoilers if, like me, you're not interested in seeing them!).
I can tell this is a great game, obviously created as a labor of love, with a dedicated community and I'm glad I encountered it.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone! Much appreciated.
Yes Oldschool, I am indeed old and a pen & paper gamer. Started playing D&D in the late 70s. Between then and now there was a period of over a decade that I didn't game at all, but got back into an OD&D game around 2004 that I still play in about once a month. I've been looking for something like Sryth to fill the gaps and it looks like it's just what the doctor ordered.
And texlaw, Thor should know better by now. ;)
