View Full Version : Our Lost Comrades

It is with great pride that I'd like to announce our long-lost comrade of arms, Trogg, is to join our new forum (well, not so new, but you get me) shortly. I've managed to contact him by his old email address. Please direct him here when he arrives.
Preemptive welcome to the forum, Trogg!
PS: I hope this thread stays open for old-timers who come back. We are still missing friends from the old forum. I'll try to find one or two of them. Does somebody want to help? There are still a few addresses on the old forum (http://shadowwolf47.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=members&view=top).
EDIT: Also, could any screen reader user tell us if it's possible to copy the link to an item, and how? He was having some problems to accomplish that, trying to get the Item IDs from his unique Blacklake Keep items.

I had Blackcrowe's E-Mail address so I just tried to contact him and it was rejected twice.
I did a quick check and he's not listed in the top 300 in the Hall of Champions anymore either, so I guess he doesn't play, at least with the handler name Blackcrowe.
I would say he doesn't have that E-Mail account anymore. To bad, I would liked to have heard from him again......
Would it be possible to have the GM "post an ad" in the game news on the log on page for people to join the forum? Just a thought.....

Regarding Blackcrowe: Judge Fury and Varsil Demonsoul were mismatched friends.
However, The players behind the characters were very good friends, if only through the internet, and through this game in particular.
I (Kori) had regular contact with Blackcrowe, mainly because of the fiction thread in the old forum, "Behind The Green Door".
The last communique I received through Blackcrowe's email address hinted that he wasn't well.
His sudden silence suggests a dire outcome. I don't want to think about it. I miss him.
I truly hope he will show up one day, and regale us with his sense of humour.
He was not just my friend, but a friend to all of us.
And that's why I want you to know my real name... Kori Mitchell. If I ever disappear, know that I am Badstench, and I think of you all as "friends".

There are also some forum members who were at one time active in either forum that still visit this one but for whatever reason(s) don't post. C'mon guys and gals you know who you are. If you're not sure then you fall in the category as far as I'm concerned. So.... How are things going?
There are also some members who seem to visit sporadically who are active at different levels when they do visit. Taleria and Chareos come to mind. And while he doesn't play anymore I would include Mattman here since he has occassionaly vistited and posted. Same thing for these folks whether I mentioned you or not. How's things goin'?
Then there are the members that haven't visited in varying degrees of "a while" who don't seem to fall under the previous category.
Like Scout and Badstench I miss Blackcrowe and I hope he is well.
Other members that come to mind are; Barn, Rakhan, Kith and although he was recently mentioned Carior, Grymlok, Gypsy, Amberjoy, xrayspecs, RaleighTSakers, Miryenne and Metaldoc.
Apologies to anyone I may have overlooked and then are also other members who are "older" (before my time).

OK just finished making that thread with this one linked. Boy it has been awhile as my old forum skills were a bit rusty as it took a bit to remember how to post and then modify it.
Here's the link on the old forum if anyone is interested. Just remember folks if you're not registered on the old forum you have to be to even view posts. And as far as I know you can still register.

One thing regardless of whether an email is sent back or received would folks post who they've emailed and results in this thread like Scout did. Again, thanks in advance.

Concerning Dustinbag...
Real name "David"... he is/was very focussed on his Christian beliefs, and passsionate about life. Sryth was something he did when he wasn't doing anything else, which wasn't often... very out-doorsy.
A nice guy with a good sense of humour and very tall.
He strikes me as the type of guy who would give up wasting time on the computer rather than quitting Sryth particularly.

I remember a lot of these folks since I've been playing since October or November of 2004. I see Taleria on Windows Live Messenger fairly often and DarkEmpathy is very active on the Audyssey Blind Gamers' mailing list and on the discussion forum of an RPG called Entombed. Entombed is the first RPG that I know of that was designed specifically with the blind in mind. As such it's played entirely using audio and either screen readers or the Microsoft Sapi speach engine. It's apparently based on a lot of those ROguelike RPG's with random dungeon layouts and it doesn't use a standard HP system. You get hit points but each body part has a certain percentage of the total, meaning that if a part takes too much damage it can't be used until healed. I actually don't like this sytem personally since it means that it's perfectly possible to take a small amount of damage to your head or torso and die instantly since if either the head or torso are mangled it's game over. But getting back to Dark, after experiencing Entombed he's apparently decided that it's more entertaining than Sryth since there's more strategy. And over the last year or so he's gone on about the GM's greediness, all because of encouraging donations and rewarding said donations with ATs. Apparently in Dark's eyes that's being greedy all because he himself can't currently afford to buy a residence and access the content available from them. I mean what's wrong with making a few small donations from time to time and saving up the ATs and gold until you can actually afford whatever it is you want? And I'll be the first to admit I love Entombed (I bought a copy), but the learning curve is definitely very steep for someone who's never played RPG's before.

I certainly don't remember that being true back when I initially registered for the old forum. That was November of '04. It was almost a year later that I met Dark, or at the least, it was then that he first messaged me via PM and later via Email. That was of course long before residences or even Donations were introduced and Dark's opinion of the game became rather soured. He's mentioned writing to the GM to express his disappointment, but it's been at least a year since he logged into the game, much less the forum. In fact I don't even know if he's got an account here.

I hope you are doing well.
Scarbrow came up with an idea to contact missing members through E-Mail (see thread) http://srythforum.com/showthread.php?t=911 to get them to come back and visit/join us on the new forum.
I was wondering if you had access to the "hidden" addresses on the old forum.

Hmmmm... I'm not sure about the idea of accessing "hidden" addresses, even it's for a good reason. The addresses were originally hidden by the respective members for reasons of their own that should be respected.
This sits squarely on the shoulders of the "privacy" monster.

But thing is, the forum has your address, like it or not, if you ever gave it to them for something like say, an account activation. If you don't want others to see it, you shouldn't dispense it.
Even if you "need" to supply an address, you should create a special "shield" address created specifically for registrations if you really don't want to dispense your real address.

Greetings all. I do not know if anyone remembers me....but, I can assure you I'm an old player from sryth.
I began playing during the time before AG...The Secret of Stoneback Hill cost a couple bucks to play, and the toughest enemy was a Giant in a forest if I remember correctly. I know one of my quotes about the game is floating around the intro screen. Been gone around a year, trying to catch up to all these players with 100's. Last I can recall, Havoc had 100 for his destruction skill, and that was considered a big deal!

Welcome back, Nodrey! You're certainly an "old comrade;" and it is great that you're back. The game has changed so much since the "old" days where a single lvl 100 power was truly legendary. With the grinding scenario's and game content, that is doable in 3 months if one concentrates on it. And we have at least 4 players with lvl 100 in all skills and powers and another one or 2 with the xp for it but are refraining from spending general xp to achieve the goal. So welcome back to a new and different sryth.

Hi Scout. Hi Mak.
Its been a while hasnt it? Not sure where to start!
Unfortunately real life got in the way of me playing so I had to give it up - and pretty suddenly at that.
Things are good now though so I thought I'd just take a quick look at Sryth for old times sake as I had such a great time here. That was partially due to it being a great game but I think what made it so great was the community ie you guys and the rest of the bunch.
I wasn't going to post as I was 'just passing through' and doing a little bit of reminiscing but I was amazed to see how many mentions I got (or at least the nefarious Varsil Demonsoul got) on your shiny new forum. So thought I better stop by to let you know I'm alive and well. :)
Its great to see that so many of you are all still here and enjoying the game.
At this point in any post, even a serious one, its customary for me to attempt to be outrageously humerous but on this occasion I'll give it a miss and just say I'm genuinely touched (although I'm sure you'll say I was always a bit touched) that I've been missed by you guys. It cuts both ways and I've missed all the gang here too.

Dang it looks like Blackcrowe logged off as I was composing my earlier message.
Hopefully you return Blackcrowe and see this because you are remembered and have indeed been missed.
Back to my timing comment from the earlier post. Hopefully I did Varsil justice earlier today when I posted this,
If Hawk thought his head was spinning earlier it now felt like the roulette wheel at the Russled Grouse. And not on any given night but on the infamous night that Varsil convinced Finkle's Hammertongued kinsman that a nunnery full of lascivious dwarfs seeking atonement existed on the grounds of Lyrelocke and that they could catapult him there by way of the roulette wheel. Aptly named Fizzle never cleared the launch pad much less made his destination even with Bogmuck and that brute Grymlok spinning the wheel. It wouldn't have been so bad except that about the time the dwarf would've cleared the open door the King's Scrabble Commission appeared in the doorway escorted by Judge Fury no less. Fury was right to be wary of Scout holding the door open for their "entourage". Even with the Chief Commissioner battered and bruised Fury seemed to be defusing the situation until Varsil asserted that he now indeed had proof that *spletch* was a word - after all he stated the King's own Scrabble Commission and Judge Fury were as good a witnesses as any one could hope for. To say things went downhill from there would be a gross understatement. The rest is history, sealed by the Court and the King no less, but history all the same.
Again welcome back and good to hear from you.

10-10-2010, 07:44 PM
Well if you decide to play again there indeed has been a lot of new stuff - both in content and in mechanics added. And there is more "around the corner" so to speak. Suffice it to say if you to decide to start playing again you might be able to increase your xp bonuses significantly (not sure of your characters' base stats) before you start racking up all the xp awards since you played last.
And the latest PG has wrapped since you were active. I won't reveal much other than there are multiple plot possibilities aplenty and some of them would suit an evil themed character immensely.
Again good to hear from you.

There are also some members who seem to visit sporadically who are active at different levels when they do visit. Taleria and Chareos come to mind. [...] How's things goin'?
I'm pleased to note that I've been mentioned. I drifted from the forum about the same time I quit playing the game regularly. I guess I got burned out. The irony is I can't really recall what I was doing at the time I left, since I was beginning to recover at that point from rather harrowing medical ordeals for which I have to conclude that malnutrition was the root cause.
After several months of fanfic reading and attending weddings in the middle of this year, I settled down enough to start missing Sryth and got Pythia going. I still renewed my AG subscription, even though I wasn't playing actively. So then, I was feverishly trying to catch her up and now she's done all the content and Taleria is lagging behind majorly. As I got caught up, it led me back here.
I tend to work in cycles, so I'll do something, get burned out, do something else, come back...So not sure how long this forum visit will last, but I'll always come back barring some tragedy like loss of Internet. Sryth is something I can never give up unless I don't have a choice. And this is still one of the greatest corners of the great big Internet. So many intelligent, kindhearted people congregated in one place - it's a real treasure and a haven. I'd like to thank those who've stuck around while I was gone to keep this place alive and well. The atmosphere is the same as the last time I was active here.

Hi Dooli, :)
Yes, the health issues are fine now, though I'll need iron supplementation for the rest of my life. But you know how gaining weight is generally a bad thing? Well, in my case, it makes me glad. And I'm now at the weight I was before getting sick, so all is well.
Yay on the pumpkin contest support. Haha.
In other news, I'm in training for my first job ever as a cashier. They only make minimum wage, but I have the luxury of trying something like this out at the moment. By first job, I mean this is stuff people usually do as teenagers, so it's pretty big for me, especially when I thought blindness would inhibit work altogether. I don't think I'll be crazy about it, since I never ever saw myself in sales, but I'm hoping it's not so bad I dread going to work. Just a casual employment situation, but my friends and family are supportive and think it will be a good experience for me to see how things are in "the real world."
Ha, and here I sit enthusing to people I don't actually know. But I wouldn't be this open on any other forum. Besides, even if random strangers read this who aren't part of this community, it's not like they'll know me personally to pin this to, anyway. :p

I suggested they use 0.67 - you'd be amazed how quickly the light finally dawned on them.
However, if the decimal equivalent of 1/3 is 0.33 to two significant digits, then how come you only get to 0.99 multiplying it by 3?
I remember asking my junior high math teacher that question, who pointed out that 1/3 times 3 was in fact one. Still, the decimals don't work. A paradox indeed ...

Metric has nothing to do with it - the decimal equivalent for 2/3 of a kilogram is just the same as 2/3 of a pound.
Edit: Badstench makes a fair point, although similarly the English system can be expressed in ounces rather than pounds.
Trivia question: in the English system, pound is the unit of weight. What is the unit of mass?
Badstench
10-28-2010, 01:01 AM
except... if you're buying amounts not equal to an even kilogram, then you can ask for weights in grams, and as the metric system revolves around the number 10, it's a lot easier to work out rather than using fractions and the imperial system.
This is normal practice at the deli where I shop... to ask for 100 grams (or whatever). I wouldn't ask for 1/10th of a kilogram.
Similarly, if I wanted 2/3rds of a kilogram I'd ask for 660 grams... and I know that's not exactly 2/3rds, but you'd have to be pretty anal to quibble over the difference.
Mind you, sometimes I hold my thumb and forefinger at varying distances apart and say, 'I'd like about this much sliced ham!"

Ah, I see! In that case you currently have no access to Saarngard (something to do with you changing the timeline). Now you need to complete the adventures leading to the "return" to Saarngard. Nice use of Bible quotation, Mak ! Although I'm not so sure about the Iron Maiden song...
I live in a place called 'Bygrave' in a house called The Old Rectory. It is opposite a little church and the cemetery attached to it. I thought if I put 'By a Grave' it would sound more ominous and in keeping with Ezekiel's hidden darkness.
I have not lost my geeky-ness ! :D
When did the forum change ? It's nice to know that my posts had a slight lasting impact.
Again, humble apologies for posting in the wrong place.

On second thought, the Iron Maiden song may have been ill-thought- I blame an ill-spent youth wasted on girls, booze and heavy metal. This version of the Prodigal Son (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EpZLjlnhJVY) by Keith Green may be more appropriate. For some reason, this song has a strange appeal to me - the bond between a father and a son, and the themes of shame, forgiveness and unconditional love... -cough- moving on, nothing to see here.
I am really glad to see you back - and even more gratified to find you have not lost your inner geek! I do not think you realize the profound effect you had on this game. "Slight lasting impact" indeed! Why, good sir, I will have you know that I learned this game peeking over the shoulder of giants like Dustbinbag, Havoc, Eric and Hpmons. You were gracious, helpful, humorous and honest, and one of the cornerstones of the old forum and community that helped so many adventures on their first steps on the wondrous and dangerous world of Sryth.
Ezekiel's hidden darkness sounds promising. But... why hide it? Darkness craves company...-daydreams of Ezekiel, Subzero and Varsil Demonsoul unleashed on Sryth, sighs contentedly-

By falconry I meant using trained raptors to hunt which could be falcons, hawks, eagles and other birds of prey. The term hawking in that sense has fell out of use and there's another term for those that use hawks (besides hawker) and eagles I just can't recall it atm. But pretty much today falconry covers both falconers and the other term I can't recall.
Do you know what type eagle? Just curious somewhat of a raptor buff myself.

"I'd say hello and buy you a drink behind the Green Door, but I assume the last couple of years have made no impact on your temper, and your sermonising (or your aroma for that matter). Then theres the matter of your unnatural aversion to parting with your gold when my flagon gets empty, Fury.

Anyone heard from Shadowblack recently. I noticed a few days ago he'd been absent which is unusual for him. He normally surfs invisible but if logged in the last visit still tracks folks - or maybe that's a mod function.
Noticed a similar lapse just before his last visit btw.
But more of a concern is the fact that he's dropped off the HoC unless he's really nerfed down as I checked through the top hundred or so.

Havoc hasn't been around the forum for at least 1 week and hasn't posted since January 6 2011.
As far as tracking the invisible, that's a Mod feature.

If so, Shadowblack has been missing (from the game) for quite a while. If he was here on the forum a couple days ago, then that rules out internet connection (unless he borrowed someones computer just to check in here for his Admin duties).

Maybe ShadowBlack's AG account expired. I remember him mentioning that he wasn't certain he could extend his account last year; only to have some good fortune fall his way. I hope he's well; and hope to see him back soon. He's one of the ancients :)

Good point Scout re: tracking invisible users. Let me clarify. Actually seeing invisible users while they're online is a "staff" function. On "users online" their name appears with a + following the name or while viewing profiles/posts/etc... the "dot" will be red for invisible users.
What I'm referring to is if you view users last activity. I think it shows accurately for invisible users for all users not just staff.

For me, Shadowblack doesn't have a "last activity" listing on his page and on the members list it says "N/A" under last visit.
I guess that's part of being "invisible" to the general forum. I can see that Admin/Mod's might need to see everybody that's logged on but not everybody else.

I sent a PM to Shadowblack earlier and got a reply. He's fine and will be absent for awhile longer. I told him we'd keep his seat warm.

I want to caution you on those Facebook games.
Many people where I work have gotten viruses from/while playing Facebook games and I even heard of one case of an E-Mail account being hijacked for malicious purposes (adult content was being sent from their accounts).
Personally, I don't use Facebook or Twitter (except for web hosting announcements but I'm not signed up with them) as I have no real use for them.

I'm not saying they're 100% safe, but as far as I know, most of the people who pick up viruses from Facebook games do so by clicking on fake links that offer them free credits. There are a lot of these out there. Personally if I see 'Click here to get 100 free favour points/reward points/mafia members/magic wotsits' on someone's status I automatically avoid the link like the plague. And anything that asks me to email my friends so that I can get some reward I will also always avoid - and that includes those chain emails which have been going around for years.
I suppose what I'm saying is, don't confuse the medium with the message. There are 101 ways of spreading scams and trying to rip people off out there: Facebook, email, normal websites - and if you think about it, telephones, letters, door-to-door salesmen and the random bloke you meet in a bar. Viruses are just the latest in a long line of people trying to mess up your life for their own advantage. You just have to apply the same standards of vigilance wherever you happen to find yourself.

Huh? What-what? Did someone call?
My insanity sense is tingling: are there voices of reason to be countered?
Well, of course it's all reasonable: caution everywhere, humbug anywhere. Virus or not, Facebook has its adepts and purpose, but it isn't everyone's cup of tea. By all means, if you like it, use it. My post regards only my own reticence, and it encouraged no one to abstain from, or desert that online community, while Scout's just seems a cautionary warning based on troubles experienced by others while using a certain type of product - namely, games - available on Facebook. Neither of us claimed the site or its games are guaranteed to infect the user's computer, or hijack everyone's email account, only that there is a potential risk (actually, I claimed nothing, but no matter, why let that small detail hinder me in any way? :)) - in addition to which, apparently neither of us chooses to be an active participant in that fascinating social experiment and outlet - or Twitter's. True, all that can be said of many things, places, communities or sites, but Scout had information pertaining specifically to Facebook. He knows of an issue and chose to warn us of it, in the spirit of 'better safe than sorry,' I suppose.
It is easier to be vigilant knowing the nature of a potential threat, so all things considered, I see no real evidence of his message lacking the "voice of reason."
(In any case, I don't need an additional deterrent. And my voice lacks reason, yes. :) No?)

Um, I don't think either Scarbrow or I meant to imply that there was anything in Scout's post that was unreasonable. My post was meant to be more in the nature of a clarification: yes, there are dangers related to Facebook games, and they relate to clicking on false links, etc etc. Since I play FB games and therefore have a bit more knowledge, it seemed reasonable to share it.
The second part of what I wrote wasn't aimed at Scout (sorry, Scout, if it came across that way), but was just my own 'cautionary message'. It just happens too be something I feel strongly about.

Just another word about FB :):):)
I have a FB, but it's on total lock down. Like, it's on so much lock down that some wired app for the church's youth registry that's supposed to pull your FB profile pic for your ID doesn't pull mine.
As for viruses.... My friend was playing snake off of her FB on her computer and Firefox popped up something like "we have detected this site trying to apply spy ware." And it was FF official. And I quote another friend "I almost for a virus from FB. A thing popped up and said "Maliware detected" so I clicked on fix and it started going through all my files. But it looked so wierd I knew that it wasn't right. And it turns out it was a virus. That is the end of my story."
So, yeah. Be careful with FB. :):):)

This is a quick-ish ad hoc message to defuse any potential digging-in of heels, and things turning into a more vitriolic exchange for no reason. :)

That's all right, Dooli, I know. :) And if you vouch for Scarbrow's thoughts as well, I might be willing to accept that.
My previous post's opening was meant to suggest that I wasn't setting myself as the stern judge over all this. :)
And you are a voice of reason. :) I'll just say that since Scout noticed a trend, that has a value, since viruses spread not for lack of anti-virus software or people's cautious online behaviour, but their easily given trust or lack of concern. There are people who set about online activities intelligently and cautiously, but many don't, and even among those that are well informed there can be a lapse in careful judgement; it's difficult to constantly be on guard - especially when one is tired and seeking some quick entertainment in the form an apparently simple and harmless game.
So it does some good to occasionally raise a cautionary flag and remind people of the pitfalls - which you yourself have done in your post as well (hence my opening sentence there: "I know [...].")
(As to the medium vs. message issue: well, certain media are better suited for for the propagation of all things, good and bad, and many are less versed in avoiding online scams then they are in avoiding them in their physical environment, their 'real life.')

I miss Joddelle dearly...
She was the best when it came to "boring" and hard endeavours. Even better than me on some of them. Remember when she played a full "game" just to find all available Item IDs? Without that, the wiki wouldn't be what we know now. And the times she must have rerolled characters to find the perfect combination to get all skills and powers... we wouldn't have the Character Startup Guide without that, too.
Also, she was technically able (remember the scripts?) and a friendly one to chat (if a little sensitive sometimes). I wish she came back someday, if only irregularly like me.
EDIT:
BTW, if you look at her profile, it was updated... oh, well, right now. She's playing. I wish we had an in-game chat. Although she's also invisible to other adventurers: note she doesn't appear on Recent Activity or on Active Adventurers. I think this is a byproduct of her character being out of HoC
And re:her powers, I don't doubt she has enough specific for anything. Remember she's voluntarily out of the HoC, and at least in gold, she even surpassed Havoc at his best time. I seem to remember that at the time of the Raffle of the Rings she spent like 34 million gold or something like that. Her hoards are absolutely legendary.

.....EDIT:
BTW, if you look at her profile, it was updated... oh, well, right now......
I was going to comment before but I had to leave then forgot.
If I remember correctly, the profile update time and date is a server thing, not an account of when someone is playing.
It would be nice if it was a representation of actual play time so we could see who is still playing and who has left the game.
Maybe if the GM could add a "last log in" to the profile page, but that may be deemed an invasion of privacy....
Scarbrow

I seem to remember the server updates last saved time sometimes, but it also changes when you manually save, so at least it's a possibility.
In fact, IIRC, when the server updates "last saved" time, it does for all profiles, active or nor, so if you see an profile you know it's inactive not being updated and another profile is updated meanwhile I think that hints strongly to the second player being active.

:) Wow, thank you all for the warm welcome back. I'm touched... in the heart, not in the head. Well, maybe a little bit in the head, too... ;)
(Temporarily off topic)
As far as viruses and malware go, my experience mirrors Dooli's: I avoid any links that promise me something for nothing, like free items or coins for a particular game, because (a) most of them don't even work, and (b) if they do work, it's because they've hacked the game, and what's to keep them from trying to hack me, too? I also don't authorize many apps besides the games I play, because I don't like how FB lets pretty much any app have full access to your personal data once you authorize that app.
I also avoid clicking links within FB that lead to applications on websites outside FB, because FB has no way to police such apps and a strange website could do almost anything. (TG, is that "snake" application actually on an external website? I suspect so.) And any time you go to ANY website and a window pops up saying "we've detected malware on your computer", if that window did not come from an antivirus/antimalware application YOU installed on YOUR computer, never authorize it to start scanning anything. That's a very popular scam that will actually install malware on your system that wasn't there before!

For me that would mean losing twenty-four irreplaceable tabs!
"Incothievable!"
Kidding: that's fair precaution, not paranoia. And FF4 at least, is very peppy and reliable at restoring previous sessions, so all tabs from the previous session (and only the previous session, unlike IE8, which can go utterly psychotic trying to open a wormhole into yours and your ancestors' browsing history all at once!) will come right back, when called.

Is it only me, or is this forum getting a bit irritable recently?:(
That's from 2009, I believe...
Some are wreaking havoc in the world, some have embraced, or are hiding in the shadows; some scowl and frown between smiles. (I also do all those things, so no aspersions there... :1/2-smile: )
Some are busy, struggle with temporary troubles, deal with time constraints or restrictions originating in the outside world, some feel constrained and restricted here, impeded; some suffer from mild burnout, some feel unappreciated or unneeded; some fear or avoid potentially harsh disapproval, irritated replies, some fear they wouldn't be accepted; some may know it too; some feel they're not fully accepted, some feel ignored, snubbed - you name it...
Some may feel irritated, aggravated, insulted, aggrieved; assaulted, chastised, reprimanded, heaved; hurt, betrayed, threatened, overwhelmed; stressed, harassed, neglected, bereaved; rejected, derided, objectified or peeved... Upended...
Nah, never mind, I'm just imagining, rapping, channelling the 'beat,' making up things, diffusing the heat...
Pay no heed...
I'll just mention Meduwyn, since she's not on your list... but you're right: many others.

07-07-2011, 04:03 PM
Well then, ditto. I already started scaling back... I just had a feeling of talking to myself sometimes, which isn't as much fun as I thought it would be. :)
And the PM box is a constant crunch with Scarbrow's warning at the time, that the added space might be revoked if users were to 'abuse' it, so what's left?
Wondering if anyone listens in the open, and on the PM front, whether I'll be judged a PM abuser?... That's not much fun - just another unnecessarily niggling little stress in the back of my mind. So if everyone's leaving or scaling back, then 'it is what it is' once more. Maybe just another habit to be broken then, same as did Joddelle and many more.
Still... some things are weighing on my mind, and I can't just quit, because it's not just about me, even if increasing levels of 'desertion' and reduced participation really are, or do become, a fact...
(I can't shake those feelings of constraints and limitations, which stress me the most, I think - but life already offers enough of those outside this forum, so... I don't know whether to take them in stride or cast them off.
Well, everything imitates life, and life is constant change - the only constant.
Sorry about this post... But your sentiments may have echoed some of mine, Scout, and that... well, this post is the result, I guess. I hope it's 'not a bad thing' - not too bad, in any case, although I prefer to keep my posts on the sunlit side of the street... even if it takes more effort than I have to give at times, which is probably why it doesn't always work.
All right, enough of this - end of post, I'm becoming really gloomy... :))

Well, everyone needs time off, and I know there can be reasons - everything from lack of interest or energy, to bitterness... I understand.
But don't overdo the withdrawal, it can lead to even more bitterness and melancholy...
Joining the silent majority?... Nah, the time will come for that too, eventually, and even the thought makes me sad again... "The rest is silence."
(But even Hamlet waited to the last second with that line, and he talked gloomy the whole play through... ;))

Redundant post to formally say, "Welcome Back!!" to Rommel.
The battle is over...for now...
Please Note: Experience awards for this battle have been recorded for each participant and will be available at the "windowless building with the blue door" in Hawklor, Trithik, or Talinus. There is a delay between the end of a battle and the availability of the Experience awards.
Massive Pumpkin Beast is no more. The fearsome giant pumpkin was valiantly engaged by a brave band of Sryth's most illustrious heroes in a brutal battle that lasted 0 hour(s) and 43 minute(s).
It was ultimately the illustrious adventurer, Spencer Lionking (Durgin), who brought down The pumpkin beast.
Wielding his trusted weapon (Bloodrune Longsword), the valiant Spencer Lionking ended the menace of The pumpkin beast by dealing out a total of 1064 point(s) of damage in his final engagement with the fearsome giant pumpkin.
Here are the names of some of the bravest adventurers who stood against The pumpkin beast, and the damage they scored against the fearsome giant pumpkin...
Adventurer Damage
1. Rommel (rangerlord) 20,119
2. Spencer Lionking (Durgin) 17,656
3. Beth Draedon (donmoody) 2,550
4. Jamok (catasthrophe) 88

Ditto - Welcome back Rommel.
Actually Hawk jumped back up to 20 in the HoC a bit ago so I checked the rankings and notice Magical dropped off again but I was also pleasantly surprised to see Rommel/Rangerlord back in the Hall.
Again welcome back. :)

Magical and Shadowblack have both been missing for quite a while. Did someone else fall off??
EDIT:
I just took a quick look and Scout is up to #18 (from #19) but I couldn't see who was missing...

Might have been me - I drop from #16 to #19 if I save with Trielra's Staff equipped.

Could be as I'm currently ranked with Trielra's Staff so I can't tell if Hawk's dropped or not. Even with Trielra's Rhia ranks ahead of him so if I can remember to keep Banderyp's equipped that might tell. But I'm thinking Kid Nroun (sp?) is currently off the HoC. However I'm not sure if he has been ranked recently as it's been a while since I've checked them.
Either way with Rommel back, and probably catching up on missed content I'm not getting too comfortable.

But that is wonderful. Here's to Rommel catching up on his equipment ranking! That would be a very welcome climb up in the rankings :)

At least, from Havoc we know he's alive and well (not to mention happily married and employed), and he is still reachable via PM.
He may have stopped grinding, but he will surely come back when the GM adds the new "Goblin Magic" power :p

First, @ thingirl - I add my "welcome back". I guess what worries me most when much loved members vanish is the uncertainty of wondering why.
Did we do something wrong? Did he/she just get sick of us? God forbid, did that person die? Or, on a more positive note, did you find something more fulfilling to pass the time with?
Don't asnwer. Those are all rhetorical.

Meh, it's easy enough - as I heard on a footage of an old mummy-come-to-life named Nancy say once: "Just say no." ;-)
It helps if you have your hands full with Sryth, and life (and holding on to your berries for dear life XD) - when your head's not buried in them... (your hands, I mean! Geez... Better cut off any tricky side path before the ribbing begins...)
Anyway, I seem to have no trouble staying away from temp flash games - not lured much by, and can't get attached to simple 'time-wasters,' even games have to have a greater scope, some depth, a long-term element to them - something - to get any sort of hold on me. *shrug*
It also helps that I think of all the great games [? - well, I hear or half-assume they are, or expect them to be] waiting in the wings, for which I've got no time to spare: Shogun 2 (and the other Total War series), Deus Ex 3, Witcher, Half-Life 2, Portal, you name it... 30, 40, 50 titles that go back years, never even installed - or taken out of shrink wrap. Hmm. Still buying them all the same. ("One day. Maybe. Soon. One day... Well, they're not perishable. I hope.") And if I don't get round playing those, then... well, 'time-wasters' simply pale in comparison.
Looked for a text-based game since I played one for couple of months as a kid, but never thought I'd settle for one - at the expense of all others. Not complaining, just slightly surprised still. ('A puzzle onto myself.' :-))
Wait ... What thread is this, again?... It's not about games or Seyth at all, is it?! XD
Ah, right... the 'lost souls' ... Eh, I can make that work somehow. Give me a moment... :-)

Well, yeah, it's easy enough for people who aren't the sort to get addicted to them to stay away from them. For those of us who are that sort, "just say no" is much easier said than done.

(As Spencer introduced me recently, so kindly: "Don't look now, but he's baaaaaaaack" - give or take a few letters. For a short stint, hopefully, only to reply to your reply - I really should conk out.)
Well, all right, I'll be the angel's advocate (now there's something you may have never heard before :-)).
*****
If you already have found out that you are 'the sort' to get addicted, why run to the risk of actually getting addicted by exposing yourself to the games being talked about, in the first place?
*****
Oh, heck, are you kidding? Are you really reading in my post that I dismiss with one wave of my magical wand on which are engraved those silly words - "just say no" - the entire issue of addiction?! Hmm.
Well, I was. Kidding, that is, as far as Nancy and her issue-negating slogan goes!
Basically, it says 'just say no to any problem, and the problem goes away.' Hahahaha!
There you go! We can have world peace, love and understanding, and a pristine environment - overnight! XD
Just say no to war, hate, religious strife and terrorism - um... and what the heck: to pollution, while we're at it. And to famine. And disease.
Ah, why sweat the small stuff? Just say no to 'Bad," and all will be 'Good.'
Just say no. I dares ya. ;-)
Right? Well, yeah, obviously it doesn't work like that - nothing much does. If you really think I subscribe to that, you really think I'm stupid. Which would be fine by me - it's OK, no skin off my nose. :-)
Did anyone take that 'just say no' slogan seriously? Well, I'm sure some have (or many) - but just as many (or more) laughed at it, as far as I know.
I agree: 'just say no' is a simpleton's simple-minded oversimplification of the issues surrounding the many types of addiction which rarely are simple, and which rarely have any solutions that can be called simple.
Now, back to playing advocate for the angel for a few sentences... :-)
As far as (Flash) games are concerned, since the object of the addiction is easily identified, and the reaction and consequence are already known through experience (i.e., "I am prone to become addicted to Flash games. This is obviously a Flash game. I am likely to become addicted to it."), it is at least easy to identify the thing you should avoid, and if you really are determined to avoid them, it's possible (i.e., "I should probably not look at this, because as soon as I do, I'll likely become addicted, and before I know, I will have lost three, four hours without noticing.")
May not be of great help, if you simply can't stay away, if you give in.
Unless you don't mind becoming addicted, or even look forward to experiencing that addiction again, in which case it's not a matter of 'helplessness' in the face of addiction, in the face of the thing that has a hold on you, but of a conscious decision to ... well, subjugate yourself to it - a conscious attempt made at becoming addicted to one of these games, because that sensation of addiction is what you seek.
That seems avoidable to me, but I suppose if that desire to get addicted is suppressed, it may resurface in another way. Tricky stuff. :-)
Besides, I alluded to that, while saying there is Sryth for me, or whatever else, instead. As is often the case, one addiction can replace another, if the other's source is eliminated. Like I already acknowledged: no easy and perfect solution; I know that much. I am not Nancy. :-)
I wasn't dismissing an often very serious problem - that of various addictions - by simply musing on the fact that I happen to prefer something with some depth and longevity at the expense of something superficial and fleeting.
Either you missed that distinction between disapproval/lack of understanding and amused musings, or I mused so poorly, it was impossible to notice. My fault, then.
And now I'm tired, so if my previous post was already misleading and unclear, who knows what misunderstandings this one will cause... :-) I can't do any better right now.
*conk*
:-)

Anyhoo, this is a reply to Dustbinbag on his return, but note some of the other ole timers mentioned.
