View Full Version : Forum Request:Increase Character Limit

I know for the average post, even Oldschools, 10,000 characters is way more than enough.
But when it comes to fan fiction (and a certain joke in the giggle bag ;)) it isn't enough for 1 post.
I just added my Shadow Path Mystery & Shadow Path Mystery Contiued from the old forum and had to break up almost 60,000 characters into several posts.
So, if it's possible could the limit be raised? 100,000 characters would be nice.

I don't see many problems with increasing the limit, but:
For all I see on the Vbulletin support forums, the limit is for database performance reasons, and to avoid post of such length that could jeopardize the server's stability. Besides that, there is no recommended limit other than the default. That then begs a question: Is it really necessary? As you say, there are very few posts requiring more than the default limit, and as for the fanfiction ones, splitting them is a perfectly legitimate way to bypass the character limit "problem".
For these reasons, I'd rather not increase it, unless we find some derived problem that can't be solved by splitting long posts over several parts.

New limit request.
Could the limit of 1000 characters for your signature be raised to 2000 or more?
I ask only because the limit includes mark up like [b ] [color ] etc... along with blank spaces.
I find it annoying that if I want part of my sig to look a certain way, I may have to sacrifice content in order to do it.
My current signature is 967 characters long, mostly because of the image addresses.
Scout's alone is 123 characters long for the image and address to his page.
Thanks......

While I agree with Scarbrow about not changing the character limit re: posts unless some problem occurs you have an excellent point Scout as I've "fell victim" to the sig limit also. I took my character links off so I could put my vote links up and still maintain my musical sigs. And occassionaly I've had to mod the vote link (going B&W and no bolding usually) to give me more room for the jukesiggies.
One thing for everyone to consider and this may be preaching to the choir or more like the pot calling the kettle black, but.....
If they can be and are increased we need to try to keep a reasonable limit to their size and consider disabling them in certain threads/posts. With that said I don't think anyone has one that is too obtrusive imo. Let me add currently before someone mods theirs and says how 'bout this one, lol.
Good idea Scout I'd rep you but you'll have to settle to get in line, You have given out too much Reputation in the last 24 hours, try again later.

Sorry Scout, I've searched through all of the forum options and I cannot find any option related to the signature character limit. It must be hardcoded in the vBulletin software. I'm afraid you will have to work within the current limits.
I've changed a few other things, however, and reported them on the Forum Updates (http://srythforum.com/showthread.php?p=48768#post48768) thread.

Thanks for looking.
Thingirl sent me a link tinyurl.com (http://tinyurl.com/) that may help with character length.
I'll give it a try soon and see.....

Google for "URL Shortener" and you'll find many more.

Bump for an announcement.
While I was investigating usergroups for the PM mailbox request (http://srythforum.com/showthread.php?t=898), I came across a way to increase signature limits. So I've created another custom public usergroup (http://srythforum.com/profile.php?do=editusergroups) for users with big sig needs (a beautiful alliteration, too). The group leaders are, once again, the mods and admins. I've removed us from both groups, so only staff members who want to be are in the group (easier to manage, too).
The limits for users in this group are double than the usual ones (max 1000 characters without BBCode, and max 2000 chars with Bbcode markup). The limits can be adjusted if there is any problem with it.
I've also reduced the maximum allowed size for text in signatures to 6 (current big text on scout's sig) from the previous 7. This is for all users, including the extra sized ones.
I've included just Scout and Oldschool to the group for the time being, since they both requested it previously, and there is absolutely no doubt of their merits to get it.
As usual, the warnings about don't overstepping. Try to maintain a reasonable signature size, please. There is an automated system to control that, but I won't enable for the moment. I trust member's self-control.

Thanks Scarbrow. And re: self control (http://images.icanhascheezburger.com/completestore/2009/4/17/128844729198405129.jpg).;)
Seriously good point about keeping the sig sizes reasonable as I know mine's bordering on obtrusive. That's why I disable it on certain posts/threads when I remember.
Again thanks Scarbrow - duly repped when allowed.
