There are less than ten shards - that's all I'll say.
One tricky part to the adventure - hint: when faced with a choice of directions, remember the order of the alphabet.
Also, there's a body at one point - if anyone finds any significance to it, please advise (I could not).
Like I said, it's long - probably takes at least an hour even with the above tip (I wasted thirty minutes before I got it right).
Good luck! PM me if you need a hint.

What do the levers do?
Then enable you to get eight triangular crystal shards. There may be more but eight was all I found. Then you go open that door and go down to the second level. Use the silver ring on each of the four doors. The fights are easy, then each room has some alcoves. One has an inscription and the other two seem to be empty. And it's those alcoves, eight in total, that I can't figure out.

Eight alcoves = eight levers

You need to put them all in the same position. Putting them all down will enable you to get the crystal shards. Then you need to move them up. This will allow you to see the images on the slabs, once the four doors on the bottom level are opened. All you need there is the silver ring with the stone. I haven't quite figured out what you do after seeing the images, but I'm off to try my latest option.

Like I said I don't know how or even if the spoiler tags are accessible so read at your own risk. I still have not figured out what you do after this, but here's what to do with the slabs. When the levers are Up they'll show images. Use your silver ring on each slab to transfer the engraved image from the slab to one of your stones. But beyond that I haven't figured out what to do.

If there were only seven images you missed a lever. All eight have to be up. Then use the silver ring on the one slab that still has an image. The chest will open when all eight stones are graven with images. Put the stones in the chest and close the lid. THen open it again and take what you find. Take it to the room where you destroyed the sphere and use it there.

I wish I could say the same. I figured out the lever positionings more or less on my own but I never would have thought to try to open the chest after getting the engravings, much less putting the crystals inside. Once I did that the rest was more or less obvious. And let's hope TG's right and we already have two of the three necessary objects. I wonder if and when we'll repair the lantern?

Btw TG deleting my previous posts dropped my count by 15 give or take a few. Figured you'd like that info. ;)
Adventure details - very spoilerish.
The mysterious stranger is located in the Griffin's Ledge Ale House in Trithik. Once you encounter him you head to Fang Ridge until you find "A Dark Hole in the Forest Floor...."
Once you enter the cavern there are several different encounters/locations. It appears you can exit and reenter until you get the final encounter with the Ghost of Merzekk and the Ancient Lantern.
Here's the order for the optimum run time.
Immediately go to the NE corner and destroy the orb on the pedestal there. On the way there you'll encounter one of three rat hordes with a dozen rats per horde. Besides the combat xp each horde yields 128 general xp. Once at the orb, there is a Divination use with no xp reward. And it reveals an aura of evil. It is necessary to destroy the orb to throw the levers and engage the Massive Rat.
After destroying the orb go into the NW corner to the lower level lever room. Immediately prior to it is an alcove/room with the following;
Plain Gold Ring (Use) Item# 1760
* Class: Armour, Finger
* Encumbrance: 1
* Quality: Magical
* Agility: +1
* Luck: +1
This is a plain, unadorned, gold ring. This enchanted band was lost long ago by an adventurer whose life came to a quick and gruesome end somewhere in the forest near Fang Ridge.
After getting this item go down into the lever room and throw the levers DOWN - there will be some text re: loud rumbling stones. This will also allow eight voids to open. There are eight scattered through the first level and each contains a Triangular Crystal Shard,
Triangular Crystal Shard (Use) Item #1757
* Class: Misc
* Encumbrance: 0
This is a small, glittering, triangular crystal shard. You discovered it in a hidden void in the wall of a passage in a dark, forest labyrinth near Fang Ridge.
While collecting the shards in the SE corner there's an alcove with a Leather-clad skeleton. There is no hint but using Necro will result in 128xp gen/256 xp Necromancy and will animate the skeleton who will head down the corridor.
There is also a Massive Rat in the SE corner. Defeat it for 2 ATs, combat xp and the following,
Silver Ring (White Stone) (Use) Item#1758
* Class: Armour, Finger
* Encumbrance: 1
* Quality: Magical
A jagged piece of white stone is set into the top of this silver ring's thick band.
Once you have all the shards and have animated the skeleton and defeated the Massive Rat go back into the NW lever room and throw the levers UP. There will be text re: faint sliding stone. This will allow the images in the central eastern second level room to be displayed.
Now head down the central eastern corridor until you get to a locked door. Several skill/power checks. I used Destruction (60+ I think) for 16 Destruction xp. However, physically destroying it via combat netted 64/65 total combat xp.
Descend into this room and use the ring on the four locked doors 32 gen xp each. There are also combats with 4 different size Orange Slimes. There are four version with different rewards of 32, 64, 96, 128 general xp. This is in addition to combat xp. I went in the order of N, E, S, W and it has been confirmed that they are set by location. The descriptions from smallest (lowest reward) to largest and following my order are; Giant Orange Slime, Enormous Orange Slime, Massive Orange Slime and Gargantuan Orange Slime.
Each door leads to a corridor ends in a "T". Going to either side of the T's puts you at slabs with images. Use the Silver Ring at each of these images (8 total) for another 32 xp general each. This will transfer the images to the ring.
Head back upstairs to the end of the NW corridor. You can now open the chest use the now imaged Triangular Shards or put them in the chest. Close the chest. When you open it it will contain the following.
Glowing Crystal Orb (Use) Item #1759
* Class: Misc
* Encumbrance: 0
This fist-sized crystal orb emits a bright, white glow.
Take the Glowing Crystal Orb and place it on the pedestal of the orb you destoryed in the NE corner for 128 general xp. Merzekk's Ghost will show up and give you the,
Ancient Lantern (Use) Item# 1761
* Class: Misc
* Encumbrance: 0
This is the ancient lantern presented to you by the apparition you encountered in the depths of dark lair in the forest east of Fang Ridge.The apparition, which you believe to have been the spirit of Merzekk, alluded to the lantern's importance. You clearly recall the words of the ghostly figure:
"It will help you to see in true darkeness...it will let you see beyond all sight..." [/quote]At this point the adventure appears complete. Exiting will get the final rewards - 2048 general xp/256 AS&P. The underground area will also collapse and be unaccessible but will remain as a "Previously discovered location".
Also this passage from the final rewards is noteworthy. Credit to TG as I overlooked it completely on my first run.
You've acquired one of the three ancient items (the ancient lantern) needed to pursue the Sword of Merzekk. Keep it safe!
Hope this also helps for the wiki TG (or whoever). Started to add it myself but I need to get in the sandbox a bit first.

Here's what I'm referring to and credit to Thingirl for catching it as I was distracted during my first run and completely missed it. During the rewards section,
Also 2048xp general/256 AS&P.
Hmmm, maybe the third object will be what repairs or restores the lantern? I wonder if this suddenly intense focus on the Sword of Merzekk of late means we're coming up on a situation where its power will be needed? Something to do with Runeskin perhaps?

There are also combats with 4 different size Orange Slimes. They get progressively larger (didn't get the actual descriptions) and the rewards are 32, 64, 96, 128 general xp. This is in addition to combat xp. I went in the order of N, E, S, W. Unknown at this time if that's the order or they get progressively bigger after each combat or they are set by location.
Re the Orange Slimes:
The rewards seem to be fixed to the locations, rather than the order you do them in - I did N, W, S, E and the rewards were 32, 128, 96, 64. I didn't take note of the descriptions, but I assume size matched reward.

Don't worry too much about navigating the forum nor its decorum. Intentional rhyming groan notwithstanding, both will come with time.
Thank you for the welcome, I have to commend everyone on maintaining the most helpful and civil forum I've ever seen in any game.
I've played Sryth for years, but never had the opportunity to add constructively to any of the threads, until recently. Mostly I just have time to watch the oldtimers, heavyhitters and Sryth faithful fill in all the blanks, leaving very little for me to add that would further the conversation, or help newer players, and that is about the highest compliment I can offer.
I feel very strongly about Sryth, and from the forum, I can see that all of you do as well. Please keep up the good work, and I shall try to keep up.
Thanks again, and good luck out there.

Have defeated all the enemys, collected all the triangular shards etc. But I cant get the chest open, and Im at a dead end as what to do next. Also only 6 of the shards have taken the iages on the walls. Any help anyone?!

Interesting... Appearently, you do have to have the Plain Gold Ring on to fight the big rat, not just have it in you inventory. Anyway, back to testing and mapping...
EDIT: Now THAT is interesting. I'm wearing the ring and I still can't fight the rat.
EDIT2: And you have to kill the stone orb to move the leavers. I'll go try the rat again.
Hmm, you have to kill the orb to fight the rat, too. Maybe it's that and not the ring? Or maybe both. I'll find out tomorrow, I have to go to bed now. :(

I'm with spencer - I think we need a non-spoiler adventure title.
I've got it on my log as 'A dark hole in the forest floor...', but only because that's what the Fang Ridge location is called.

I still say it is too much of a spoiler. The GM rarely spoils the final reward with the title of the adventure or if he does, it is so cryptic, you can't figure it out.

The whole point of my argument is that the reward should not be included in the title. However, it is not that big a deal to me and you are taking the time to put it in the wiki, so I will stop my end of the debate as I have made my point. It truly is not a big deal to me what the title is, and thanks for taking the time to update the wiki.

OK, and I see your point. However, I can't come up with a good non-spoilerish title. And now that I think about it, "The Ancient Lantern" does sound better. That's what I'll use unless someone can come up with a good title.
Dranikos
04-22-2010, 06:23 PM
"Beyond all sight"? That's the importance of the Lantern anyway according to the ghost so it's still SLIGHTLY spoilerish, but it says nothing about the reward on any level (unless you draw the connection to Merzekk.)

The orb is the key to all of your edits TG. I am fairly certain that after you defeat the orb you can fight the rat and move the leavers (I meant levers!) (LOL) As BillyDaKid posted I did the adventure and I never equipped either ring.
Also I like the name being listed as The Ancient Lantern. I really do not consider the lantern in our inventory as a reward for that quest. To me it is more along the lines as a stepping stone to the real reward from that quest which is the Sword of Merzekk. Just my 2 cents.

Welcome to the Forum Aren Vork.
Not that it's a breach of the rules, protocol or anything of the sort but I removed your email addy from your post for the reason Dooli mentioned. We do have a lot of bots crawling around on the forum. While most are legit - search engine bots indexing the site, some aren't. Fairly recently I noticed several spiders that didn't seem to be legit. Googling them indicated they were malicious. This was before I realized how to ban an IP and they left before I figured out how to and I haven't seen 'em since.
Feel free to add your email addy back in if you want. I added spoiler text in where your email addy was indicating you could be emailed via your profile. I removed it as a precaution. Just in case it was a while before you read the replies and if after doing so you then decided to remove it.
Also TG destroying the orb is the key to the massive rat. I think I put it in my spoiler run down but I may have overlooked it. And kudos for your wiki work.
As for a title, Dooli's is a good alternative. Or how 'bout something from the opening "scene". Mysterious Stranger is too confusing especially considering we've had more than one tromping around Sryth before this one and likely to have more to follow.
Can't recall anything atm but I've still got the alts to run. I'll copy/paste the text - that may help.

I can give you a couple of reasons. Maybe the person is stuck and looks at the wiki only for a small hint and does not want to spoil the rest of the adventure, or, an admin will often change the title of the thread if the players pick a title when the GM does not specify one.

That's too specific for me to even think about. I more "Linear" with "Wikia = spoilers" and "do it on your own = no Wikia and no forum."
With that, the last two name suggestions "Under Fang Ridge" and "To Light the Way" seem to be good enough.
Oldschool
04-25-2010, 03:03 AM
I tend to agree with Spencer. Just because someone is visiting the wiki doesn't necessarily mean they like or are even indifferent to spoilers. Take me for instance.
Normally I try to avoid spoilers. Still I often checked the wiki when I was new despite the spoiler potential. However I would normally only do so after I ran an adventure but before I had committed to it so if I fouled up anything major I could abandon it.
Dejinxing ritual done.
However the ToA could make worrying about missing or fouling something up a thing of the past so to speak.
And to steer this back on topic. I don't think any of the title mentions so far, barring any direct Merzekk reference, are spoilerish at all. Even location descriptions regardless of title aren't in my opinion. After all, except for a little trotting around Trithik and some exploring Fang Ridge we don't truly have to search for the location.
And I like either of the above titles that have already been mentioned and are in Elrond's post. My personal preference is Texlaw's "To light the way" - very ambiguous.

Just a point about the topic title...
I started this via the adventure finder "Somewhere in Trithik". Then I went to Trithik, thence to Fang Ridge, then found "dark hole in the forest floor." At some point I got stuck/lazy, and looked for help with the levers, ... A search in the Wiki turned up ... nothing. Luckily, I habitually search the fora also, so I found this thread.
My point: "To light the way" is poetic, but maybe "Beneath Fang Ridge" would be more practically useful to people looking of help?

I see your point. However, it's like that with ANY non-GM nammed adventure. If it was me in that situation, I would have searched for "fange ridge leavers". That gives you the location of the quest, and the object of frustration.
Also, I just searched for "fange ridge leavers" in the wiki, and To Light the Way was the only thing that came up.

LMAO....... Spencer I don't know if you meant it the way I took it. IF so and by Zm's reply, I'm guessing there's a cultural and generational gap clouding that reference. And no offense ZM especially because I could be wrongly reading between the lines of Spencer's post.
Anyhoo here's the gang of Cleavers I envisioned. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eOiLKa-QuwQ&feature=related) And starring Rokmokkora as Eddie Haskell. :rolleyes:

It was kind of meant as a double entendre...a dig at TG, of course and the play on words for Beaver Cleaver and the gang and the interpretation of toughness by zm is spot on, too. Anyway, I was very sleepy at the time and am now even sleepier :)

Well... In that case...
Whatever, some old creep is making references to old TV shows. I'm not supposed to get it, so why should I? I just don't get the point of black and white TV, I mean, you can't see all the colors on their clothes and hair and stuff. *sigh* if they have no taste in TV then it's not my problem. Everything is not what it seems.

Lol - the point of black and white TV was that you couldn't have any other sort!

When you've watched a few episodes of the Twilight Zone (1959-1964), tell me if you still think the same thing about B&W TV.
The only bad thing about that series is that you can only get a limited number of episodes for free. The best ones are always unavailable.
edit: Also, we are REALLY off-topic

That would be you. Awww, come on!! I was hoping for another spirited debate on what the title should be :cool:
Zm was commenting on something in the wiki article, that's not off topic.
And BTW, LOL, my did at you was a play on the word "leavers"
I think you mean dig.

OK to get back on topic...the wiki is very helpful as my secondary did the adventure much faster :)

Well, I finished this one up last week. Ever since, I have noticed that the Border Rangers must be napping under a tree somewhere, as I am now encountering an extraordinary number of highway bandits as I travel around. They have tasted enough steel that they finally give me lots of room as I pass by, rather than attacking me. But I wonder what this interesting little wrinkle means for the remainder of the Sword saga.

The bandits have no (direct) relation to this adventure - I have not done it yet and I have killed plenty of bandits, to the point where some of them run away rather than fight me.

Besides, the Border Rangers are patrolling the border, not the middle.;)

A recent post made me realize/remember the wiki description and thread title aren't the same although the wiki's description/links do an excellent job of leading the way so to speak.
But editing the thread title just to include the wiki description seems a good idea. I kept the original title and just added the wiki bit.
Edit: Also just thought to edit the thread tagging option. Note to self: Gotta remember to do that more.
