It's been a while since my last one.
Your eyes suddenly spring open, at almost exactly the moment the sounds of the world once again rush in to fill your ears.
You're both startled and relieved to find yourself standing just outside the tall, crumbling arch through which you entered the ruined city.
You hear something rattling about amongst your possessions.
Well done, Altaria! Your successful and complete exploration of the upper sections of Tarn, and the first of its lower levels, is a feat worthy of a master adventurer. You will soon be able to delve further into the lower reaches of the ruined city, where you will do battle with the Tarn-Hurn and his deadly minions...

I'm sorry to hear you keep getting the low end rewards, and I hope your luck improves. If you also save right before you spin the wheel, and keep replaying the lower level for an orb, it doesn't sting as much knowing that every 3 runs you get an AS&P reward.
spencer

I have thought of that, but it takes me almost three minutes to do the lower level and if that is five or six re-spins, it can be quite time-consuming.

It can be, but most of the time it takes me 2-3 respins. Only on the rare occasion does it end up going to 6 or 7. Also, I prefer the 15 minutes spent to waiting for another 3 hours to try again. I suppose it all depends on how you view it. :)

Well, I am up to 9 out of 10 for this same reward...I won't scream any more, as it is obviously not helping...still, 128 to AS&P is nothing to sneeze at.....
unless someone puts pepper under your nose, of course.

Aww...I'm sorry to hear you've had to try so many times. Well, sympathy repped when I am next able. Maybe I just get lucky with Tarn. Then again, I've averaged about 5 Tarn runs a day in the last few days.

As far as respins are concerned - sometimes you end up losing so much time respinning that you miss an extra Tarn run for that day (so you end up with 3 Tarn runs instead of 4 because you wanted an orb so badly). In the long run the missed exp can end up being as much as the exp you will get from the orbs. That's why in recent days I do almost no respins.

20 minutes is great! With my net connection and attention span, I need 40 - 60 minutes to finish a Tarn run. And when my connection is really slow, it takes me 90 - 120 minutes for a Tarn run!

Heh, my connection is fine, but my attention span is pretty lacking. It generally takes me anywhere from several hours to 3 or 4 days to finish a Tarn run.

Lol, I've had a few Tarn runs that needed more than a day to finish (each). But it was more me being busy with work and family rather than attention span deficiency!

My point is... Havoc earned his place by hard grind. Today's adventurers are mummies boys (and girls) compared to old timers

I would tend to agree....Havoc grinded when it was GRINDING, and then he grinded (ground?) some more...he is definitely to be commended. Our present day grinders are to be commended as well as they work very hard, though their ascension will be much faster.

To put this in perspective, he had lvl 90 destruction before grinding scenario's were introduced! He relied on spider caves, gem drops, and a game update every couple of months! Bugger!

Is there a secret to beating the demoness in Tarn? I can't seem to beat her. I thought the demonscourge would work (since she is a demon), but it didn't lower her melee rating at all. Am I missing something?

It will lower the to-hit, only if you can manage to get an MR higher than 166 total with Demonscourge equipped. What is your current MR? The Demoness in Tarn is 9+ at MR 178 (18+ at MR 166 and lower).
I would suggest coupling Demonscourge with Shadow Magic for a more noticeable effect, or using a power that cannot be resisted.

I am only at 127 melee rating with the demonsourge equiped. I figured that was too low. I am 138 rating with shimmering long sword, but that isn't good enough either. I guess I can try the shadow magic combo. Thanx.

For future reference to anyone that hasn't done it yet......
All 3 of my secondaries beat her with their MR around 100 or less using the Creyn Blade and Gating (60+ I think).
I don't remember for sure but I think Ulric was the only one with a QS at the time for the heals, but no QS 20's (he still hasn't finished that yet). No FoD or WoD either but I'm positive that they used up all 3 BoP's in the process....

I'm sure this answer is floating around somewhere, but for the life of me I can't seem to find it. Is there a particular number of complete run-throughs of Tarn you have to complete before actually getting somewhere? I'm at the lower level 1 and feel like I've been there forever!

I can't wait for the next lower level to open up.
Even though the XP is great, I still get bored with Tarn. The upper level is to long in my opinion. I think clearing 10 buildings would have been enough.
I did find a way to make it better though, clear 1/2 of the top level then go to Jadefang. When you are done there, go back to Tarn and finish it.
It breaks it up a bit and when you finish the second 1/2 of the top level it doesn't seem so long.

I agree. I particularly hate the southeast region. It's far from everything important. I'll try your way with the jadefang lair. I think that would help.

Second attempt to get an orb. The first one produced 512/128 and no orb. Usually if the end reward changes it gets reduced, not increased.

I've never noticed that it changed. Must have always randomly stayed the same for me.:(

It has never changed for me, either, but I remember SB posting that it changed if it took a long time to finish the run...I may be wrong, but I thought he said he had saved part of the way through and then had gone back and finished a good while later.

I think I also remember Shadowblack saying somethin like that. However, I also remember this: I have a theory about when the Tarn XP is calculated. It is as soon as you enter the city. But if it takes you more than three hours to complete, then it recalcs when you return.
I'd previously never been able to get a result different than my intitial award on restarts, but ended up sitting in Tarn 'idle' for half a day yesterday because I left without finishing the city (something I'd never done before)
When I returned, returned to the sheltered hollow and saved, then went in to complete I got a 32 to AS&P and no Blue stone. I was screwed on the 32 (I thought) but I decided to keep trying for the stone. My next attempt gave me 64 AS&P, and the time after that gave 256! I decided that was good enough and didn't keep trying for the stone orb.
Anyway - the thing different (for me) was that I completed that run more than three hours after I finished it.
EDIT: Found it. There might be a bug with the rewards at the end of Tarn:
Hi, there haven't been any changes made to the Tarn rewards. I'll have to double
check on when the reward is set as I can't recall off the top of my head when it
happens, but there definitely haven't been any changes to the reward or how/when
it gets set.

Hi
What\_s going on with the rewards for completing Tarn? I thought the reward was fixed when we first enter Tarn_ but I just had it change multiple times in the span of _1 hour:
512/128
384/64
768/192
768/192
384/64
384/64
512/128
I died
I died again
384/64
384/64 _ blue stone orb
In other words the reward changed at least FIVE times before I decided I\_ve had enough. Is this some sort of glitch_ or is it intentional?

Sorry to disappoint you, but that's not the max reward. The max is 1024 general and 256 to all skills and powers. Still, congrats on the nice reward.
To get to the second level you need to complete a certain event in Tarn. The event is available after you complete Tarn a certain number of times.
Lol, I should've known it wasn't the max, I'm not that lucky. Better carry on grinding then.
Ah, Ok. Thanks for the help.

I had thought that we had somewhat established that 200 MR/SP was the threshhold for the 72/76/80 xp rewards from the Glowing Halgorims on Tarn's second level. I was used to getting 36/38/40 from them when I was @ 262 MR and 238 SP. My last run @ 269 MR and 229 SP yielded a 40 xp for the first (green?) one but I got 72 and 76 respectively for the second two. The random ones were still 36/38/40.
shadowblack
03-05-2010, 08:00 PM
It's not MR, it's 200 Stamina for the red one. With MR 173 SP 215+ (depending on Fogbough bonuses) I get 36/38/40 for the red one and for the random ones, and 72/76/80 for the green and silver. So I guess for silver and green the threshhold is 230 Stamina (for the red it is either 200 or 210 Stamina).

I dunno as I seem to get random ones as well as sometimes I forgot to "gear down". I thought it was a combo of MR and SP - I usually nerf mine down to 160ish both.
I asked about this before and I THINK that's what SMV replied. That it was both SP&MR. I'll try to find the old post and quote if SMV doesn't read this and reply first.

For the Spider I drop my MR to 212 and SP to 242. For the Lower level of Tarn I have to drop my MR down under 200 and my SP to no higher than 231.
And here's the original thread (the link starts with the post that got this discussion started).
http://www.srythforum.com/showthread.php?p=19839
Holy Mackanoley!!! I've definitely been going overboard on the nerfing it seems.
EDIT: Shadowblack's post clears things up in that one of the Haligrom's lower xp was making things seem random to me. That's the main reason I started nerfing down so much.

It's been so long since Ulric has been to Tarn that when he spun the wheel, I was shocked that the lower level was already open to him.
Also, he failed to make it to the Tentacled Snail Beast twice (quit to get a blue stone orb, failed that twice as well), so he still has that to look forward to.
I'm betting the girls haven't opened up the lower level yet.

Scout just had the strangest experience in Tarn.
After clearing the first 4 or 5 buildings, he headed to the North and found the buildings empty. Then he headed to the West and they were as well.
Then I woke up and remembered last Sunday, he was in Tarn and fighting 3 MP's at the same time. I guess I forgot to go back and finish Tarn after the MP's were finished.....
Here I thought something new was happening, but it turned out to be me getting old.:o

When Tarn first went live and I was running my alts through to get to specific content based upon numbers of runs I done just that. But that was when only the upper level was available.
Besides the lower general xp I only ever got 32 xp to AS&P to the best of my recollection. I know I at least got that the majority of the time as I don't recall getting any higher AS&P or lower for that matter. I think the lowest AS&P is 16. Also IF I recall correctly some folks reported getting higher AS&P rewards (64 xp iirc) on shorter runs. And maybe even the keys only runs.
I know I've ran a few shorter runs including the bare minimum key runs since the lower level went live. But they've been so few and far between I can't recall if I ever got any orbs from the lower level on those runs. Not qualifying for an orb might be the only other drawback to the shorter or keys only runs.
shadowblack
09-04-2010, 07:42 AM
The main drawback of a "short" run is the low experience: the lowest rewards can be received only on "short" runs. Also, in the past the higher rewards (anything better than 384/64) were possible only if you cleared the whole place (or at least the higher rewards were more likely). No idea about the current situation, though.

Okay, I'll say up front that because this thread is so long, I don't really feel like hunting through pages and pages of end reward reports to find what I'm asking. I checked the wiki first before coming here, but there is no quick way through Tarn for subsequent runs. Also, how do you people do it efficiently? With the other short grinding spots, I can finish all of them in about half an hour, barring distractions like IMing. Part of the reason is because I don't have to heal much except for fights where I can't run away when the going gets tough. For Tarn, though, it usually takes me over an hour and I'm thinking there's gotta be a faster way. But I'm not the best at working out quick ways of doing anything. So basically, I'm looking for hints and tips for finishing Tarn in under an hour, if possible. As it is now, I keep having to exit to heal and then walk back, and this gets very tiring. Help? Please? Thanks. :)
shadowblack
11-09-2010, 08:00 AM
You know you can heal by drinking from the fountain, right? And that you have a link that gets you to the exit with a single click, right?
As for the fastest route - no idea. Remember that a lot depends on connection speed and on luck - if you keep getting three enemies per building you are guaranteed to finish faster that if you keep getting 7 per building...
Taleria
11-09-2010, 08:41 AM
Right, I know about the fountain and the exit button. What we need is a fountain button, because it's right there in the middle, but sometimes, I have to run away from buildings, and I'm not anywhere near the fountain. Then, I use the exit button, but have to walk all the way back to where I ran from. This can get really annoying if you run from the buildings in the SE section, or the ones on the top or bottom edges. Walking from the entrance, I mean.
But I'm thinking healing between buildings would take extra time, too, given how little I tend to heal. But is it ultimately more efficient to heal after clearing each building to save time walking back from the entrance?
Good point about number of enemies. I guess that can't be controlled. Was just hoping there was some route to take to minimize the time wasted by backtracking, if you get my meaning. If we had a fountain button, we could easily use it as a reference and take our branching paths quicker than ending up on the edges and then doing the whole exit button, walk to fountain routine.

Using Restoration is difintely the fastest way (especially after the changes that allow you to use Restoration several times in a row). I'd recommend healing every time you lose more Stamina than the max your Restoration heals. So, for example, if your Stamina is 170/200, and the max your Restoration can heal is 29 - use Restoration. In the long run this saves time.
With 40+ Nevernal you should need just one visit to the fountain during an entire Tarn run. And since at one time you will have to pass close to the fountain - take the chance to heal and restore Nevernal.

What shadowblack said. Generally, the only time I use the Exit button is when I need to save my game and quit partway through Tarn. Otherwise, I just use Restoration to keep my stamina from getting too low, and when my NR starts getting low or I'm in the neighborhood anyway I swing by the fountain for a refill.
My usual route is to go more or less counterclockwise from the entrance. That is, I clear the eastern and northeastern sections, then northern, northwestern, western (with central in there somewhere, I can't recall exactly where; possibly just on the way between some of the others). Then southwestern and southeastern. That tends to bring me near the fountain when I'm starting to get low on SP or NR, which works out nicely.

I agree that using Restoration when needed is definitely quicker than trekking back to the fountain or back from the entrance depending on one's position of course.
Especially since as Shadowblack mentions you can repeatedly use Restoration from the drop down unless it fails.
One thing I'd like to point out about the Restoration healing although it's probably obvious. Someone recently posted about overlooking the obvious or something like that - here's one of them occasions.
Initially when it became possible the word restoration would stay in the drop down even when the power failed. Then for some reason it changed. I thought and even posted about it and more than once that it was no longer possible to repeatedly restore without selecting it each and every time from the dropdown.
It took me awhile and by sheer chance I stumbled upon the fact that you could and can still repeatedly restore from the dropdown. It seems the only difference was that the word Restoration disappears after the first use or click.:o
Not sure if you or anyone else for that matter wants a run pattern as most folks probably have their own set one but I'll list mine mainly because it's me and I'm windy.
As for run pattern I usually go down the center westward clearing both sides hit the fountain then make a hard northern turn which ends at one of the keys. Then I go east then immediately south which puts me on the street to clear the last two northern buildings.
After that I one click to the entrance go back down the center hitting the fountain then take a hard southern turn which puts me on the street with another key and the spider chest which I clear by going east.
Then when I exit that puts me in the center southern section near the arch. I then go south hitting the arch then the street with the Staggering Haligrom and clear it which gets me the last key. Then I'll go straight across and clear the southeastern most street - the one with two buildings.
By then my NRs usually pretty low so I'll go back to the spider room retrieve the gear and then one click to the entrance so I can rest and save as a precaution since I'm near the end. And even if my NR isn't low it'd be rare that I'd have enough to finish the last 5 buildings without running out. Then I'll go back and clear the last 5 buildings.
Not sure if it's closer to go straight to spinning the wheel from where I end up but I one click to the entrance since it's a straighter run from there.

Haha. OldSchool, we have the same pattern. Will have to try out Young Ned's at some point and see which one works better when I start trying to heal between fights. I generally save as soon as I get the last key, just in case I die in the section with all the buildings back to back.
It was only recently that I discovered I could Restore repeatedly. And of course, I found this info on the forum, in the thread about browsers. OldSchool mentioned it and I'm going, "What? You mean, all these months I was going Restore, Continue, Restore, Continue and I could have just hit Restore? Argh!" LOL Better late than never, I guess.
Thanks everyone for the help. I'll certainly make note of everyone's input and try running Tarn by maintaining SP levels now.

- Clear first 4 buildings west of the entrance, then go south
- Clear 5 buildings east of the "Power xp square", then go southeast
- Clear 2 buildings in the southeast, then head west
- Kill glowing Halgirom, get key, and clear building in the southwest, then go directly to the entrance,
- Go to the sheltered enclave (or whatever it is called) and save, then re-enter tarn and go directly north, then go west
- Clear 2 buildings in north, then go northwest,
- Get Key two and head south,
- Clear 3 buildings and get Key 3, then kill spider and get the copper gear, then go to the entrance
- Go to sheltered alcove and rest and save,
- Reenter Tarn and go to the Wheel.

I'm sure Oldschool and Elrond run Tarn a lot more often than I do, so they've probably worked out more efficient patterns than mine. I'll have to give those routes a try.

Elrond's route definitely sounds faster and more efficient since there's less wasted movements and virtually no back tracking. Just wondering if my NR can hold out. I'm definitely going to give it a chance via several test runs to see.
Actually I've ran that route several times or close to it before with Hawk sometime ago well before my SP and NR is what it is now and before I started grinding with Trielra's Staff instead of the Hale which adds another 4 points of NR. Back then I couldn't do it in two runs without running out of NR and when I would run out of NR I'd often be in the middle of a "section" so I ended up with my current one.

Agreed. Next time I run Tarn, I'm gonna try Elrond's route. Just that I'd settled on ours because it seemed like a lot of straight shots. Certainly it's just as efficient to start off our way, where we run straight down the middle, clear all the buildings on the way, take the south route, go kill the spider and the Halgirom, and take the straight north route right between those rooms and clear the buildings on the way back up and around. The problem arises with the pesky southeast section with all the buildings, because it's not really connected to anything. You have to go there purposely. It's not en route to the key guardians, and the arch is the border where you can go east or west. So perhaps the best way is indeed to go east, clear all the buildings, and leave the SW corner for the very end of the run.

Just ran Tarn for the first time in nearly a year and it seemed a lot quicker. I didn't have that many enemies to fight in the rooms but I think it was mainly because my broadband speed seems to have picked up a bit. I had stopped doing it before due to it taking soooooo long.
What's your broadband speed like Taleria?

With my route, you could go to the entrance after clearing the first 9 buildings if your NvR is low. But a few hundred Tarn runs indicate that with 200+ SP and 40+ NvR, the route is doable. Having a weapon that heals helps as well.

I did a run earlier today using Elrond's route and it does feel more efficient than my previous route. After reconfiguring items and gaining NV, I didn't even need a fountain stop. Completed the top level with 42 NV. Made me think about how with my previous pattern, I left the southern side for later because it feels like more work because the buildings aren't spaced out evenly like the top section. I think I'm going to run it with Elrond's route from now on, with the minor change that I'm heading SW first instead of SE for a break in the monotony, and because that glowing Halgirom is the toughest enemy on that level.

Scout tried Elrond's route and it did seem to make the SW part of the city more "bearable" to do. (I've always dreaded that part for some reason)
Since the Pumpkin contest, he's been building up the gold reserves so Scout has to leave to sell more than to heal.
Sometimes, if I have time, while out selling Scout will go and run Axepath or some other grind spot before returning to Tarn. I usually only have the time to make 1 partial grind circuit anyhow so the reset timer doesn't really matter to me.
If I have time to grind, I'll hit Axepath, Yir-Tannon and the Bat Cave.
Then Tarn.
On my first trip out of tarn to sell, I hit the Jadefang lair on my way back. **(limited stuff to pick up so my inventory doesn't get to full)
By the time Tarn is finished, the first of the reset timers is close to expire and open up the circuit can begin again.
If Jadefang and Tarn aren't ready yet for the 2nd circuit, Ice Troll, Bone Hoard, LOO or Explore the Realms can fill the void.
Just some ideas from what I use to do regularly.....

Definitely the route to take. I just now ran it for the first time with one of the alts (Voltan 209/209/49) and while he ran out of NR before the last room of the first leg he was able to run it uninterrupted. And I'm more used to Hawk's higher SP since it's been so long since I've ran the alts through I made a few blunders. For instance, like going in with low SP and having to flee thus losing SP as well as wasting NR on Restoration when he was within single digits of full SP. And more than once on both counts.
Been running it with Hawk since you posted and haven't had a problem.
Also it took Voltan about 21 minutes to clear all of Tarn and that was with with a lot of healing on the first leg (a few (3/4) rooms of 7 Stoneeaters and one with 7 Slithering Menaces). And going to Mirgspil twice to sell loot.
Gonna run the other alts through a Tarn run sometime in the next few days and that's the route they're taking.

I went to look and the Wiki says it is one of the possible rewards, so my question is have I been so unlucky to never have gotten this or is this something recent where I missed the memo on a change?

Remember it's (or was) dependent on SP/MR there's a specific "convo" maybe even a thread somewhere.
Now the big IF I recall correctly  as I don't always pay attention especially when grinding. Usually on the lower level the wanderers give Hawk 40'ish combat xp and usually 2 out of the 3 set ones you have to defeat around 70'ish and the third usually 40'ish. May be random as to which ones and maybe? not always 2 outta three. That's with Trielra's which is what he normally wields since slashing's maxed. And I've never swapped my gear much to nerf his MR and the above is what I usually run into. His MR w/Trielra's is 240'ish give or take depending on Fogbough.
Was going to edit it in later but thought I remembered where it was at - actually were it was linked is more accurate. Linked in one of the grinding threads.
http://www.srythforum.com/showthread.php?p=19839
Starts with my question and goes from there. Considering the MR range maybe things were adjusted at some point or my being lazy and not nerfing Hawk's MR may not be optimizing the combat xp.
EDIT: Cut to the chase and Shadowblack's post (if thing's haven't been changed of course), http://www.srythforum.com/showthread.php?p=20242&postcount=27 And considering his post fits my experience I'm guessing things are the same which explains the difference between the set or glowing Haligrom.
And a very overdue rep to SB for that post.
Edit2: Just noticed the (mine probably) tags for the linked thread as well as the edited thread title. At least I remembered where to find it even if I couldn't remember or find my own "shortcuts", lol.

You're welcome and it seems it probably goes all the way back to when Tarn was released.
Here's what I'm guessing may be a response Shadowblack got from the report he mentions in the earlier linked post from this forum. This is from the old forum and is early in the thread,
im just glad if you clear all 17 structures you get a bonus 500+xp reward...
About that:
Hi, are you referring to the section that gives the final Experience reward for Tarn? In that section there are 3 separate experience rewards, one is a general reward, another is a reward specific to all skills and powers, and the third is a reward based on the number of buildings that were cleared during exploration.
So on that screen, as long as you cleared at least one of the infested buildings in the city, you should receive 3 separate experience reward notifications.
This is part of the GM's answer to a bug report I sent him. While it's not quite what I was talking about in the report the info about the third part of the reward is certainly interesting...
Tetracapillactomist
08-13-2011, 02:35 AM
That is useful, and thanks again, OS. 1,088 general XP is a nice reward for the infested buildings - it does come at the price of a good chunk of time and a fair amount of clicking, but still better ratio than MPs, all things considered.
And it's clear therein hides the bug, though I still cannot tell what is actually awarded there, the expected 512 value or the glitchy 1,088. Easy to determine, time allowing: note value shown for general XP pool each time before entering Tarn, then wait for the glitch to occur, and check the difference.
One thing is clear: the glitched value replicates the reward for the infested buildings 'vacated.'
The actual 1,000+ value there should be 1,024, a multiple of 64, 128, or 256, or whatever the minimal general XP reward is at this moment.

Very nice, very quick response, Ankh, and very much appreciated!
What can I say? Great news: a lucky break, a glitch a pleasant surprise that works out in the player's favour! About time we had one of those, frankly!
Let's not forget all values are arbitrary, essentially, and as such, there is no 'right' or 'wrong.'
This can be considered 'karmic retribution / balancing / appeasement' for times when things work out against the player: random number generators, encounters and rolls, anyone?...

Personally I don't go to Tarn much. I just don't have the patience for it. Weird really since the other replayables don't irritate me LOL. I guess it's because I sometimes have trouble remembering where all the buildings are.
