Forum Refurbishment 2010

As most of you know by now, since the change of the main game section name from "Sryth Forum" to "Kingdom of Tysa" there have been suggestions and ideas about improving the current forum organization. Specifically, the location of some forums within the sections, and the name of some of such sections. I sent a massive PM around two weeks ago, and I'd like to publicly appreciate all of the answers and suggestions I got. They were quite useful. Now the time has come to take this to public discussion so everybody can give their opinions.

First of all, a little terminology so we all know what we're talking about. The forum organization is from the top down Sections-Forums-Subforums-Threads-Posts. So this is a post on the "Forum Refurbishment 2010" thread, on (currently) "Forum and Wiki Information" forum, on "Kingdom of Tysa" section.

What we will be discussing here (of course, it's open to other suggestions as well, but try to keep on topic) will be mainly two things:

Modifying organization of section(s)/forum(s)/subforum(s)
Changing name of some section(s)/forum(s)/subforum(s)


About the organization
There are currently three sections: One main section for the game ("Kingdom of Tysa"), another for fan art ("Fan Section"), and a third for general talk ("The Real World"). In general, the feedback I've received so far is that this schema works well. The only problem is the "Forum and Wiki Information" forum, which as a meta-game (or meta-forum) forum doesn't really fit into the main game section.

This is why we're proposing to move that forum into a section of its own (the fourth section, still unnamed). On that section we'll create three forums: One for Wiki topics, one for Forum topics, and a new Sandbox forum for everyone to test their forum writing skills.

Please comment on this thread about these changes. Are they appropriate? There should be more changes? Are you missing some more specific forum/subforum? Do you think there's any "surplus" forum/subforum?


About the names
Since the change of main game section there have been many suggestions of name changes. I'll list here the ones received so far, and you can add yours (or comment on existing ones). After enough time (at most a week) I'll put up one or several polls for the final vote.

For the main game section, currently "Kingdom of Tysa":

There seems to be a consensus on "The Real World" being very appropriate, but you can still add your suggestions.

1) World of Sryth - this meshes nicely with "The Real World", and doesn't rectrict the scope of the title should gaming develop beyond Tysa's borders (which it does on occassion).

2) Forum and Wikia - it has a nice ring to it.

3) Creative Arts Section - encompasses different art forms without sounding unwieldy.

4) The Real World - leave untouched.

I agree with Badstench on both the names and the reasoning for them reasoning. (I was borderline between Kingdom of Tysa and World of Sryth.)

I personally like both Kingdom of Tysa and World of Sryth - both sound good as opposed to The Real World, which I would keep as it is.

Creative Arts Section was (and is) a great summary.

I only disagree with Badstench on "Forum and Wikia", since I believe "Forum and Wiki Information" tells more about what's inside, and who knows, we may (God forbid) change our wiki host in the future...

True. But then you can just change the name of that section.

Well, while "Kingdom of Tysa" and "World of Sryth" are both kind of poetic, neither one really conveys as much information about the contents of the forum as, say, "Game-Related". So "Game-Related" is my first choice, but "World of Sryth" is my second.

For the new section for Forum and Wiki topics - We're a little short on suggestions for this one

Forum and Wiki Information (the name of the current forum)
Forum and Wikia
Administrative section

I, too, object to "Forum and Wikia" because "Wiki" is the generic term for this sort of editable database, while "Wikia" is simply the brand name of our current wiki provider. My first choice would be the current name, "Forum and Wiki Information", but "Forum and Wiki" (just the current name minus "Information") would be a fine alternative.

For the current "Fan Section"

Literature and Art
Creative Arts Section
Tavern

First choice: "Fan Section". Second choice: "Creative Arts Section".

Anyways, I'm content to go with the flow so to speak. But since we seem to be a bit short on numbers establishing a consensus here goes:



World of Sryth - Badstench hit the nail on both heads as far as I'm concerned in that it meshes with The Real World and it encompasses areas outside of Tysa.
Forum and Wiki Information - I'll defer to Scarbrow and Young Ned's wiki logic for this one.
Creative Arts Section - although I generally dislike change this one's grew on me. Plus it seems to have the consensus vote - albeit a limited one.
The Real World. Nicer ring to it plus as mentioned previously it and the World of Sryth complement each other.



C'mon folks make your opinions known if for no other reason than to "reserve your right"....

Not in my opinion. I think it's good. Maybe, "Library of Longlight," instead. (I think that's the right name, but my subscription just expired, so I'll have to check it later.)

Library of Longlight would be a good roleplaying name indeed if that were the tone of the rest of the sections, but I'm afraid it sounds a little cryptic for non-initiated.

I've added the poll (and voted already). It's public and multiple-option. I think the consensus is clear on "The Real World", so it won't be changed. Please vote only one option for each section if you have a clear favorite - mark two if you're undecided. If you've already posted in this thread, your opinions is already recorded, but you can state it again on the poll if you want.

The thread will keep open for comment, but the polls closes in a week. After it closes, and unless there's significant controversy on some point, I'll make the changes.

Meh... that was exactly what I was trying to avoid, having to double-and-triple count the votes. But since you have warned about your change, and everyone stated their real preferences on posts, I suppose it's OK.

And the possibly sixth being Joddelle's who didn't vote for any choice. I'll assume she didn't since her recommendation wasn't up. I only mention this because I'm unsure of whether she can vote for that section since she's already "been to the poll". I don't think she can but I'm not sure actually.

Edit2: Just checked in the mod "sandbox" and it seems once a member has voted the poll is closed even on a multiple votes allowed poll. Which is what I thought I encountered before on a poll I edited. Which means Joddelle can't cast a vote for that particular game section.

First a hindsight is twenty twenty kudos to Scarbrow for making the results public. Although I might be able to see them as a mod (more playing in the sandbox it seems ;)).

The new adjusted totals taking Lightwielder's and Racey's posts into account are:

Creative Corner - 7. 8 with Joddelle's.

Fan Section loses one (Racey's) as Lightwielder already has a vote tallied there for a new total.

Fan Section - 4.

Creative Arts - 5 (unchanged from last tally).

Again if I've mentioned your name and got it wrong let me know - here in open forum is fine.

Also my math skills aren't the best either. If someone spots something wrong let me know. Here in the thread is ok.

By overwhelming majority, the name of the main game section will be changed to "World of Sryth"
